Welcome to the AJ Bell for a really exciting game against Wasps. It’s a massive honour for me to lead the team this week although to be very honest, nothing has changed from our point of view. It’s a Sale Sharks first team fixture against a really good Premiership team, in a competition that as holders, we want to win. Before I get into that, I should welcome Lee Blackett and his Wasps side to the AJ Bell Stadium. Lee is doing a great job at Wasps and our lads know that whatever team he chooses today, it’s going to be a good one. Our team is well prepared and ready to go and they’re going to have

to be at their very best to get the win we need. This week we’ve spoken about our approach to this game and to this competition. It’s a big opportunity for lads who haven’t had chances in a Sharks shirt - some who have

been out on loan and then some who haven’t played as much as they’d have liked through selection. We’ve got a busy period coming up with big Premiership and European fixtures and this is a massive chance for them to put their hand up for selection in those big games. We always say that this is a squad effort and if we’re going to be successful in three competitions, it comes down to that whole squad rather than just 15 lads on the pitch. It’s about sharing that workload and keeping momentum going and that’s what this week has been all about. It’s been a challenge for our young lads, balancing their training here with their training at some of their loan clubs like Sale FC or Caldy. But we want them to experience different environments. They know that in some cases it’s two tiers down but the pressure is the same – they have to perform. All the lads who have gone out have done that to be fair to them and we’re really pleased with the developments they have made. Now comes the big test, in front of the Sharks fans at the AJ Bell.

see how he goes. He’s a big bit of meat and you can’t coach big. But he’s got good skills too. This competition has been around a while under different names, and for me, it’s massive. There’s no Premiership Shield or A league so we need another competition for those lads who aren’t part of a matchday 23 to get a chance. Otherwise where does their exposure to top class rugby come from? Most of our young lads are from the area and have come through the academy and we want them to become 100-cap Sharks. They’re all buzzing to show you what they can do – in fact we had to pull them back in training this week because they’re so excited. I know you’ll be just as excited and you’ll give them all the support they need. Enjoy the game, Briggsy.

We’ve got some massive talent at this club and you’ll see plenty of that today. We’re hoping you’ll get to see our new signing Alex Groves in action today too for the first time. He’s been training really well and we’re excited to 7

The Premiership Rugby Cup presents the perfect chance for clubs to shuffle the pack and give some of their brightest homegrown talent the chance to shine. For Sale Sharks, that means opportunity knocks today for academy stars like Joe Carpenter, Elliott Gourlay, Ewan Murphy and Ethan Caine to show Alex Sanderson that they’re ready to make the step up to first team rugby.

Joining Joe and Elliott in an allacademy back line today is Leedsborn Jack Metcalf, who joined the club after Yorkshire Carnegie folded during the pandemic. And, fresh from scoring his first Champions Cup try against Ospreys and signing a new three year deal, it’s fair to say the 20 year old is loving life at Carrington. Jack said: “I signed for Yorkshire Carnegie straight out of college when I was 18 along with some other lads I was at college with. They were in the Championship but didn’t have a lot of money so there was a lot of focus on youth, which was a great experience for me. “I’d put a run of games together and then Covid came around. Rugby stopped and no one really knew what was going to happen and then unfortunately they folded. They’re rebuilding now but back then we didn’t know what was going to happen to us. “Come Christmas 2020 I had no idea what I was going to do. I knew I didn’t want to stop playing but then Ferg (Sharks

AS I JOINED SALE, I FELL BACK IN LOVE WITH RUGBY. I JUST LOVED COMING IN EVERY DAY AND I KNEW IT WAS WHERE I WANTED TO BE. Academy Manager Fergus Mulchrone) called me and asked if I fancied coming to train at Sharks for a week. After that week he just told me to keep coming back. We played a friendly against Newcastle and I obviously did ok because after that they signed me. “It had been tough but as soon as I joined Sale, I fell back in love with rugby. I just loved coming in every day and I knew it was where I wanted to be. “Since then I’ve just tried to do my best every day. It’s unbelievable to come to training every day and play with guys I’ve watched on TV growing up. I can remember watching Manu and Faf and if you’d told me two or three years ago that I’d be training and playing with them now, I wouldn’t have believed you. “The set-up here is immense and having a DoR like Alex who is willing to give

young players a chance is great. I’ve played in the Premiership Cup, been on the bench in the Premiership and scored a try in the Champions Cup.

working hard and keep learning from the best players in the world. “There’s so much talent here. Just to be part of this unbelievable club is amazing.”

“Go back a year, I wasn’t sure if I would be playing any more, but I’m loving my rugby now and I can’t wait to see what the future brings. “I’ve grown up playing 12 or 13 but I’ll play anywhere in the back line and I think that versatility is good for me. I can be a good option off the bench whether it’s at 12 or 13 or on the wing. “At the end of the day it’s just a number on a shirt. My future is here at Sale. I just need to keep doing what I’m doing, keep

Welcome back to the home of the reigning champions. (Listen, we haven’t had much chance to say that since 2006 so let us have it okay?). It is of course a return to Premiership Rugby Cup action today at the AJ Bell and after a gruelling but impressive few weeks in the Premiership itself, a great chance to rest, reset and allow a few more of our most exciting young players to throw their names into the hat for selection in the season run in. It’s also crucial for us to keep that momentum from the Premiership going over the break from league action and continue to create the positive feeling around the club that the last few weeks and results had generated.

Competition in the squad has been fierce this season as our academy graduates have pushed the senior players to the limits and in some cases made themselves close to the first name on the team sheet. Success stories like Tom Roebuck, Bevan Rodd and Arron Reed (to name just a few) have their early roots in professional rugby in this competition and are now established first team players. Not only that but they are scoring tries, snaffling turnovers and winning us games against the best in the country. It just shows how quickly the opportunity is to make the mark in the squad as the coaches and management will trust in youth. It also has a special sense of pride to see a Sale academy player go on to be such a key part of not only the club’s performances, but also on the international level.

With a hugely exciting academy generation coming through after them, today will therefore be nothing if not exciting as a Sale fan. We’ve seen glimpses of the likes of Connor Doherty, Rouban Birch and Jack Metcalf at the AJ Bell so far and the chance for these and other players to have an impact right from the start of the match is crucial for their development, the development of the club and will have a big impact on our mood as fans for Monday mornings for the next few years.

Enjoy the game!

Alex, James & Lewis

We won’t pretend to understand the format of this competition in depth but prevailing wisdom suggests two wins out of two, starting here against Wasps today, is the minimum requirement to push ourselves into a semi-final berth. Wasps are a side that are also bringing good talent through – Charlie Atkinson famously ran the show against Sale in the league last year, so it will be a good match up all over the pitch and one to savour. It might even just be an “I was there” moment as we see some of the next generation of talent for the first time proper. At least it will be better than the last “I was there” moment against Wasps, when famously they weren’t there.

(We’ll get over it one day, we promise).

the Land rOver Cup Youngsters shine as Sharks host Premiership’s Land Rover Cup Some of the region’s brightest young rugby stars got the chance to show off their skills as the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup returned to Sale Sharks. Teams from Manchester, Stockport, Lancashire, Liverpool, Birkenhead, and surrounding areas locked horns at Manchester Rugby Club in front of watching Sharks front-row stars Nick Schonert and James Harper. Almost 40 under-11s and under-12s sides took part with the winners in each age group securing a spot at this year’s Gallagher Premiership Rugby season finale at Twickenham in June. The winning team from the younger group, decided by

nominations based on their sportsmanship and dedication to rugby’s core values, was Glossop RUFC. And joining them from the older category will be Warrington, who secured the under 12s title after seeing off a strong Macclesfield

side in a hotly contested final. They conceded just two tries in their six matches, scoring 18 themselves. The Land Rover Cup is a series of nationwide events organised by Land Rover – the Official Vehicle of Premiership Rugby – which have been running for nearly two decades and have seen more than 100,000 children take part to date. Some, including Sharks prop James as well as England stars Louis Lynagh and Callum Chick, have gone on to realise their dreams of playing for Premiership Rugby clubs. James said: “It doesn’t seem so long ago I was here playing – about ten years now. We spent time with a few of the teams and

it was really good to see them enjoying themselves.” Fellow prop Nick added: “Grassroots rugby is about being social and having fun – it was great to see them back and making lifelong bonds.” Land Rover’s support for the grassroots area of the game in the UK is typified through the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup. A nationwide series of rugby festivals for Under-11 and Under-12 teams, run in conjunction with all Premiership Rugby clubs, the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup allows youngsters to discover rugby.

21

Vital in fostering the values at the heart of the game, the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup is a key part of the grassroots rugby calendar each season, that allows Land Rover to connect with the rugby community, its players, fans, and families. Since its inception, the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup has helped over 100,000 youngsters discover rugby through the annual rugby festivals. Land Rover recognises this area of the game is essential for the continued growth of rugby and plays an important role in local communities. Follow the latest Land Rover rugby activity on Twitter @ LandRoverRugby #DiscoverRugby.

Sharklinks:

In recent years Warrington have seen a large number of our lads in the academy and with our thriving M&J section we expect so see more over the coming years.

Unsung Heroes:

We have an excellent band of

volunteers who help with the entire running of the club. From the committee to the parents, we are totally reliant on our excellent and willing members to cover all jobs. As I’m writing this on ‘International Women’s Day’ we would like to give special mention to Lucy Blacksell who has recently become our Honourable Secretary. Lucy is also the U8s manager, club disciplinary officer and can also be found in the kitchen most Sunday’s helping our 250+ M&Js and visiting teams get their post game sausage & chips.

In a heavily male dominated rugby environment, we are now seeing more and more of our mums and daughters getting involved at the club which is wonderful to see.

further develop our facility here to the benefit of all our members and ensure that we have enough space for our always growing M&J section.

Favourite Sharks Moment:

Over the last couple of years we have had countless Minis teams on the pitch at the AJ Bell - be it from being mascots, running out with the players or playing on the pitch at half time. Last Sunday our U12s followed a number of our other age groups in lifting the Sale Sharks - Land Rover Cup on a very memorable day. They will be representing our club and also Sale Sharks at Twickenham as part of their reward to have a VIP Day at the Premiership Final in June.

Club Goals:

From a short term, senior perspective our 2nd XV are currently in 2nd place in the NOWIRUL Div 2 South and gunning for promotion. Our 1st team under new head coach, Stuart Beeley and his young team are looking for as high a finish as possible in their division with a view of promotion push next season. We have given 15 debuts this season to the Colts from the last two season’s and they look set to be mainstays of our senior sides over the coming years. We have recently moved homes to Grappenhall Village Sports Club and we are looking to 27
