I’m sure our opponents, Gloucester, will have something to say about that because they are a fantastic team full of exciting backs and powerful forwards, and even though we know they’ll be missing some players through international callups, George Skivington has plenty of talent at his disposal to give us a massive challenge. Last weekend was really frustrating because the StoneX is a tough place to go and I thought for large periods of the game we acquitted ourselves really well. We squeezed them so well but when they were down to 13 men we just didn’t up the tempo. Sometimes when the plan is going so well it’s hard to deviate from that plan, but when they were down to 13 and 14 men, the landscape totally changed and that was when we needed to adapt. The lads are frustrated because they feel like they could and maybe should have won convincingly.

At the very top level a couple of inches here and there is the difference between winning and losing and we came out on the wrong side on Sunday. The lads have been buzzing this week and I know they’re determined to bounce back with a big performance in front of our supporters today. It could have been a very different Sharks side running out for today’s game. A few of the lads rolled their ankles against Saracens and they were big question marks on Monday morning but I’m so glad to say that most of them came through. We have lost Tom O’Flaherty with a broken jaw but we’re hoping he won’t be out for too long. Like I said, it could have been a horrendous day in terms of the injuries, but we’ve ended up with a pretty much full squad to pick from and everyone is in a really positive place. We’re helped by getting three of our England lads back. It was

fantastic to see Tom Roebuck, Raffi Quirke and Bevan Rodd picked by Eddie for the Autumn Internationals, and while I’d have loved to have seen them all play this weekend against Argentina, it’s great to have them back with us for this game. It’s massive for us to have so many lads involved with England and I can’t wait to see how Manu, Tom and Jonny get on against an Argentina side we know very well. We had the Pumas at Carrington last week to train with us and it was a great experience for the lads, to scrum and maul against a top international side.

Lastly from me, you might notice a new face among the lads warming up before the game today. I know you’ll all join me in welcoming Ryan Mills to Sale Sharks, and I have no doubt he’ll be a fantastic addition to the squad for the rest of this season. KICKING OFF MOVEMBER WITH SID SUTTON SALE SHARKS CEO SID SUTTON HAS REVEALED HOW HIS O W N C A N C E R D I A G N O S I S W A S ‘ T H E B E S T T H I N G T H AT E V E R HAPPENED’ TO HIM, BEC AUSE IT FORCED HIM TO ADDRESS HIS M E N TA L H E A LT H S T R U G G L E S . Sid, who took over at Sale in 2019, under went surger y and chemotherapy for testicular cancer at Manchester ’s Christie hospital following his diagnosis in 2012. And in an interview to mark the start of Movember, he said the diagnosis was a ‘welcome relief’ because it led to him sharing the anxiety that had been building up as a result of his career working in the City.

“It was a complete shock but like a typical man I kept it to myself,” said Sid . “I was extremely lucky that it hadn’t gone anywhere else and wasn’t life-threatening so I went in for an operation and that was followed up by chemotherapy. “Life has got a way of telling you to slow down sometimes.

Back then I was working in the City and covering Europe. I never took any time out and my mind was always elsewhere and then all of a sudden I decided I had had enough. “I got placed on 12 months gardening leave which sounds delightful – I could go play golf and get myself fit but actually it was the worst time of my life. I’d been on such an adrenaline rush for such a long time and for the first time in my adult life I’d slowed down. The brain didn’t like it. “I suffered a huge amount of anxiety but being a man I didn’t share it. I thought I’d never work again if I did and I didn’t want it on my medical records. “ When I was diagnosed with cancer it was almost a welcome relief because I could talk about the cancer and I knew I’d be looked af ter. My anxiet y wasn’t being looked af ter because I couldn’t share it.

11

I NEVER USED TO SPEAK ABOUT HAVING CANCER BUT THAT EXPERIENCE TAUGHT ME TO SHARE AND TO TALK. THAT’S GIVEN ME A HUGE DRIVE AND AMBITION TO DO MORE FOR PEOPLE’S WELLBEING.

“I kept it all bottled up but I truly believe it was the best thing that ever happened to me because I learned to cope with life in a different way. I learned to share and talk and empathise. “The last ten years have all been about mental wellbeing and I don’t know if I’d be where I am today if I hadn’t been through all of that.” Sid joined Sharks as CEO in November 2020 and immediately set about changing the culture of the club to an ‘expressive’ one in which players, coaches and backroom staff felt empowered to share opinions. And he wants to use his experience to help make a lasting change both inside Carrington and in the wider Sharks Family.

“I never used to speak about having cancer but that experience taught me to share and to talk,” he said. “That’s given me a huge drive and ambition to do more for people’s wellbeing and mindset and that’s engrained into what we’re doing here at Sale Sharks.

in terms of the mindset. “Leadership and showing vulnerability is key. Alex Sanderson is brilliant at doing that and once that happens it cascades down and becomes normal. “Rugby is a game full of hard hits, knocks, but the culture is changing and talking about mental health is much more accepted now in this environment. “We want to win titles and trophies on the pitch and we’ve got a huge opportunity to change thousands of people’s lives off it. My biggest goal is to encourage the younger generation inside and outside the club that it’s good to talk.” Check out Sale Sharks’ social media channels to find out how the club is supporting Movember 2022. First team players will be growing their ‘mo’ to raise money and you can support them and the cause by donating or joining the Sharks.

“One of the first things I did when I joined was change the culture to an expressive culture where people can speak their minds and have an opinion. “We introduced yoga to try and connect the mind and body and we’ll continue to grow in this way as a club. Physical training is a huge part of the job but we haven’t scratched the surface yet

SAM JAMES - CENTRE

CENTRE OF ATTENTION Consistency of selection has been key for Your Sharks as five wins from the first seven games have propelled Alex’s men into second place in the Gallagher Premiership. And at the heart of the club’s best start to a season for 17 years has been a man who has seen it all in his ten years at Carrington. Sam James has been ever-present in the Sharks’ midfield this season and as he looks forward to the round nine clash with Gloucester. He says the current squad matches up to any he’s been a part of.

“ T he club f e els like a r e all y sp e cial place t o b e at t he moment ,” he s aid . “ Mas si ve cr e di t should go t o t he young lads w ho have come t hr ough b e c aus e t hey ’r e t ak ing r e sp onsibili t y and t ak ing on le ader ship r ole s w i t hin t he s quad . “It’s brilliant to see them all step up and speak in meetings, and really help pull the team along. Speaking from my own experience, it’s easy for young players to be starstruck when they join the first team but these guys have been brilliant on and off the pitch.” Consecutive defeats

MASSIVE CREDIT SHOULD GO TO THE YOUNG LADS WHO HAVE COME THROUGH BECAUSE THEY’RE TAKING RESPONSIBILITY AND TAKING ON LEADERSHIP ROLES WITHIN THE SQUAD. against Harlequins and Saracens have put an end to Sale’s perfect start to the season, but according to Sam, that doesn’t change the team’s approach going into another big game today.

17

“Nothing changes,” he said. “ We carr y on focusing on what we’re doing and what makes us a good team and if any thing, you learn more from losses so it ’s not a bad thing for the group that we’ve got a lit tle hiccup to overcome. “It ’s a big game for us and with a week of f coming up af ter wards , we can really leave it all out there today. “ We wer e all r e all y f r us t rat e d af t er t he S aracens game bec ause we knew that so much of w h a t w e d i d j u s t w a s n’ t u s . impose our game on them.

“ We really clicked at the star t of the season and we want to get back to that. We’ve got some fantastic, explosive back s and as playmakers we need to get the ball to them.”

“We’re missing one or two lads as well but having six in the England squad has been a massive boost for everyone. We’re all like a family here so we all get a huge lift and I’d love to see as many of them as possible get a chance to show what they can do.

The big tests keep coming for Your Shark s as third-placed Gloucester come to town today. But despite the Cherr y and Whites missing some of their international stars as a result of the Autumn International fix tures, Sam says the Shark s approach will be the same “They’ve got threats all over the pitch, on both sides of the ball,” he added. “They’re really strong up front but they’ve got some backs that can light up the pitch. They might be missing a couple but they’ve got strength in depth.

“This is a massive par t of the season now and we know ever y game will be a big test for us. It has been a good star t but we want to kick on and show what we’re all about in the Premiership and in Europe.” “ Ever yone is f l y ing at t he moment and we c an’ t wai t f or t he ne x t game.” Sam James is sponsored by:

As the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end, you just don’t want them to come to an end against Quins. The winning streak was never going to last all season, but after a campaign to fill the stadium and knowing we were in front of a big audience on T V on both BT Sport and IT V, it was as frustrating as it was disappointing to come away from a home game completely empt y handed. It was always destined to be the Marcus Smith show (as we were repeatedly told by the T V coverage), but the real issues came in the errors and near misses as we tried to force the game to break down a staunchly resolute Quins defence.

O f cour se England c all ups were a big fac tor in last week ’s game against S aracens , with both sides missing some st ar player s . However it was still an astoundingly strong S aracens team (and perhaps a pic ture of where this S ale side will be in a few year s’ time) full of current internationals , who we faced up against . Yet S ale should and could have won the game on the day, with plent y of

Nevertheless there were a handful of positives to take away with us from that Sunday afternoon, not least of all the imperious form of Joe Carpenter at fullback who more and more looks like the next outstanding player to come out of the Sale Sharks Academy. It’s been a bumper few years for academy talent, and it was fantastic to see Tom Roebuck join Bevan Rodd and Raffi Quirke in being Academy graduates receiving recent England call ups at comparatively very young ages.

oppor tunities to score more points and come away with at least some losing bonus points and even the win. The frustration of the last two weeks has been evident both for fans and players, and there’s no doubt improvement is needed to return us to winning ways. However it’s also a useful time to set into context that frustration – not beating two of the strongest sides in the league and being disappointed about it really is a measure of how far this club has come in the last six years. The first season after the takeover we finished 10th, and we are now sitting 2nd in the table with an exceptionally strong squad. The standards are just that much higher, and rightly so. Today’s game therefore gives us a great chance to bring back that feel-good factor that was so prevalent in our first five games, with a home fixture against an inform Gloucester side. International call ups will continue to affect squad availabilit y on both sides, but the depth of the Sale squad now is such that we can feel confident in our abilit y and talent on the pitch to deliver. A five point romp would be lovely, but frankly we’ll just take a win to get ourselves back on track for the season and heading into a rest week with Malbec poured and our feet up.

From everyone here at Sale Sharks we have loved seeing our Sharks on the biggest stage with some enjoying their first world cup and others such as Catie Benson breaking records being the second USA Eagle to reach their 30th Cap.

Our trio of Scots, Lisa Thomson, Molly Wright and Rachel McLachlan, showed their skill in the Scotland jersey facing a challenging group stage with Wales, Australia and World cup title holders New Zealand. After putting up a strong fight they just fell short by the smallest of margins.

It’s great to see women’s rugby reach new levels during this tournament and we can’t wait to see them back at the CorpAcq Stadium for the start of the Allianz Premier 15s, which kicks off in under two weeks.
