tudent achievement and personal development are core values at Salesian; we aim to prepare our graduates to be successful at top-level colleges and universities. A broad number of AP, Honors and elective courses offer students opportunities to test their talents and interests, and identify possible college majors.

Salesian provides a modern educational environment which promotes academic integrity, provides diverse learning opportunities, supports learning differences, and encourages scholarly inquiry. A commitment to a twenty-first century education includes a one-to-one iPad Technology Program, Advanced Placement and Honors classes, an International Student Program, personalized academic guidance and career-oriented coursework.

iPad Program Salesian recognizes students today as active users of technology and the Internet. To better engage our students and enhance learning, we have implemented a 1:1 iPad program for the entire student body. This program requires all students to bring their own Apple iPad to school. Students use iPads to access the Internet and web-based research tools anywhere on campus, thanks to our school’s robust wireless network. With access to eBooks and iBooks, databases, audio and video applications, students and teachers now have an engaging alternative to conventional textbooks.

Honors at Entrance Salesian College Preparatory is one of the few high schools in northern California to offer an accelerated Honors track for incoming freshmen. Students are selected based on a series of criteria including grades, High School Placement Test (HSPT) scores and letters of recommendation.

We are

Global Citizens

S

alesian students experience learning that extends beyond the classroom. Throughout their high school experience students engage with different cultures, absorb new perspectives and gain skills that prepare them to make a positive impact as a global citizen. By being part of a diverse student body, students learn to respect cultures, languages, religions and traditions other than their own. Salesian offers on-campus Spanish and French language courses; students can also learn other languages through Salesian’s partnership with Contra Costa College. In addition, this year there are three international trips in which students can participate. International enrichment opportunities provide a window into the world students will enter once they leave high school, including tackling the challenges of college and the modern workplace.

International Student Program Salesian College Preparatory’s International Student Program enables qualified high school students from abroad to study on campus with their American peers. This year there are students from Brazil, China, Germany, India, Mexico, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Peru and Vietnam studying on campus. Foreign students learn English and experience the benefits of an American education as they prepare for college. They form strong bonds with their Salesian classmates, develop new friendships, and enrich the social and cultural fabric of the school. The International Student Program is not just a journey of distance and geography, but of self-transformation.

We are

Focused on the Future

College Guidance Students are provided with one-to-one counseling and college resources including Naviance Connection*, campus visits by colleges and universities, career days and nights, college essay preparation, college application assistance and financial aid information. * Naviance Connection is a web-based college and career planning service designed for students and their families to provide useful information for college and career decisions. Salesian counselors are able to track and assess data about each student’s coursework and college and career plans.

Personal Counseling The many changes that occur during high school can cause challenges that may be resolved if they are explored in a nonjudgmental environment. Our counselors are available to students who are experiencing personal difficulties, including adjustment challenges, issues with peers, or stress with school. Our staff is available to offer support and guide students through the challenges of adolescence. Students can request to visit with one of the personal counselors, or they may be referred by faculty, staff or parents. While opportunities for counseling are available to all students, it is completely voluntary.

We are

ACTIVE

Cultivating Curiosity

Creating Dimension

Salesian students are talented, “roll up your sleeves,” get-involved sorts of people. They join clubs, and when needed they start new groups. They are newspaper editors, class officers, artists and athletes. They step out of their comfort zone and take part in all that the school has to offer. From the debate team to Habitat for Humanity, from drama to the Hiking Club, Salesian expects students to lead as part of our community, and every day they rise to the challenge to fulfill their potential.

By exposing students to music, theatre and the visual arts, Salesian’s visual and performing arts program meets the needs of all students, from beginners to highly skilled artists. This allows them to experiment, hone talents and express themselves in rich and varied courses. Led by talented faculty, students learn music theory and perform in school-wide concerts, master the skills of painting, sketching, designing and sculpting in our numerous art classes.

Visual & Performing Arts Art | Band | Dance Drama | Music | Painting Our Visual Arts program: • Promotes quality in art, including original thinking, sound craftsmanship, experimentation and risk-taking • Introduces students to a variety of arts media within the context of history and contemporary art and culture

They sing, act, build, produce and perform in our well-known drama productions. In our sold-out musicals, students bring complex themes to life on stage, assisted by a skilled tech crew. In addition, our Story & Song chorale group performs for audiences around California at concerts and events. Many of Salesian’s student performers and artists pursue their passions in college. Through their creative endeavors, our students add dimension to themselves, their school, and the community.

ne of Salesian’s most unique and popular student groups is Student Leadership and Ministry (SLAM). This group is a collection of student-elected representatives, Faith Family leaders and students from our Campus Ministry Team. Together, members organize and direct spirited campus activities and major service projects in the community. Many SLAM members participate in a leadership course which focuses on cultivating Christian leadership skills. SLAM members help sustain Salesian team spirit and foster a sense of community. Our student-directed Campus Ministry Team coordinates and leads class retreats, school-wide liturgies, an annual Don Bosco Day Mass and celebration, service learning activities, community fundraisers and a campus-wide community service day. Salesian College Preparatory combines the elements of church, school, playground and home in a supportive and caring environment in accordance with St. John Bosco’s educational philosophy of reason, religion and loving kindness. In 2015 Salesian was again named the best faith-based high school in Contra Costa County by Parents’ Press magazine.

t Salesian College Preparatory, we believe that we are a community with a mission to bring love, compassion, justice and truth to one another and to our world. We accept that our Salesian education calls us to become good faith-filled people and honest and upright citizens. We are called to do this together, as a school community.

Salesian Service Learning Program (SSLP) All students complete three service requirements each year, including: 1. Participation in a campus-wide service day. 2. Engagement in a service donation project (including our Thanksgiving food drive and Project Santa). 3. Completion of a unique, self-selected community service project on or off campus.

Salesian College Preparatory Service Day On one day each spring, the entire Salesian student body organizes into Faith Family teams and sets out to serve the community. Faith Family teams are comprised of students from all grades and led by a student leader and faculty moderator. The teams visit various service locations to volunteer their time and help the community. Recent event locations include the Bay Area Rescue Mission, Pinole Valley Watershed, Animal Refugee Response and many more.

Annual Giving Donation There is a gap between the funds received from tuition revenue and the actual cost of educating a Salesian student. That gap is $1,000 per student. Therefore, we respectfully ask each Salesian family to donate to our Annual Giving Campaign every year. It is our hope that each student’s family contributes $500 or more; this gift is tax-deductible. We are committed to delivering an excellent college preparatory education by retaining highquality faculty, investing in new technology and offering a robust selection of courses. Your gifts ensure that students benefit from smaller class sizes, personalized attention and many extracurricular activities including athletics, drama and student clubs. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
