33

Design Approach The existing weaving community of Bazardiha incorpoates ‘Work+Live’ typology of housing. The main program of the new proposal is to provide a combination of living quatters as small scale weaving factory (kharkhanas) along with other ancillary programs. the major portion of the kharkhanas is located on the lower floor which is common floor shared by all the houses in a particulat cluster which consists of activities like handloom, powerloom, spaces for dying. Activities like drying of fabric or threads can be done in the shared open coutyard at the center of these clusters. This arrangement allows the upper floor to be connected to the ground and give atleast visual access to women.

35

Sections The lower combined floors of all the houses in each cluster allows a shared work dynamics between the whole weaving community. Which ensures sharing of resources, a sense of contact at work with the other weavers. The large open courtyards and terraces ensures public and private drying spaces for the community. With the largest courtyard boundaries used as selling spaces for the weavers to eliminate the middlemen in the process.

In the upper floor generally women of the household thread the threads in to seperate charkhas.

The basement allows the weaver to weave in silence and also avoids heavy winds which disrupts the designing process.

This space allows weavers to sell their work directly to the customers.

Proposal Axonometric

38

This process includes cleaning and coloring of the white fabric to create smaller threads for weaving.

The first process includes the designing of the saree on a graph paper which is then taken to the punching machine to create the punched cards

Design Approach The design proposes to split the functions of the court into separate buildings so as to divert the flow of the public. With the police quarters being right next to the site, the magistrate functions will be retained in the existing premises and the civil functions will be shifted to another site. It also allows seperate entry for the judges and the publis so to avoid circulation clashes. The Building was looked at with the lens of a grid with the centeral spine being used as the circulation core that sinks in and the courtrooms float above the grounds as 4 seperate pods. It also allows shaded spaces while transitioning from one courtyard to the other which becomes the pause points in the design.

Working Drawing Ground Cover: 5390 sq.m approx Plot size: 98m X 55m approx The project is a framed structure and has a exposed brick finished facade. With most of the building lying underground the courtyards form the main zones for light and ventilation. The only structures of the this project which are protruding from the ground are the courthouses, which leads to a direct relationship between the public and the court. The courthouses are double heighted with a single ribbed slab which is constructed from ferro cement.

Patra Chawl Patra chawl settlement is a part of Ambujwadi in Malvani. Patra chawl is a settlement and lifestyle constructed out of ‘patras’ or scrap corrugated sheets put together. It is an informal and a temporary kind of informal settlement on government land. Since it is government land which is occupied by people, authorities have tried to pull down and demolish this settlement many a times. Which is also the primary reason for construction of houses using patras

Metro Social Type: Urban Reclamation Starting date: March 2018 Concept: Plaza, Reclaiming land, Urban insert, Open Highstreet, Street Edge. Motive: The creation of an Urban Social space under the Metro Pylons. The concept of High street shopping opening into a public plaza. Revitalising and giving of function for unused high value urban land. The project had already started when I started working on it, mainly the work assigned to me was the detailing of few joineries. Also the drawings related to the doors, windows, tiling, railing, etc was done by me. The project also demanded a lot of site visits to check work on the site and to explain work on the site. The project included a varied learning on a lot of different materials that I have never worked with before in reality. Also some work on the boundary wall and the driveway was done.

78

Studio XS Program: Addition to a Residence for an office Location: Indiranagar Bangalore Month and year of commencement: June 2018 Currently the office is functioning from a garage under the house 64, defence colony. The new office is being designed over the house, on the terrace, the work had just started when I joined. I worked on various parts of the office like the flooring, jaali, the skylight and also some parts of the side area roof. The bar side design of seating, flooring and roofing was done.

79

Flyover Bar Program: Bar and restaurant Location: Hebbal, Bangalore Type: Extension over a mall Month and year of commencement: June 2018 Flyover bar is a Restaurant project that was under construction during the time. The client wanted a restaurant themed on a medieval form of architecture. It is a restaurant and a bar.that is built on the terrace of an already constructed building. The restaurant was designed as a ‘Conte’: A medieval tale’. The site was on top of a terrace. I sections were taken from existing columns and the roof and the entire structure was resting on the columns. Exposed brick walls were built around these I sections which had an arch. I was a part of designing major part of its seating, staircase, deck, etc. The 3d model was done. The external is completely left open without building masonry walls that continue up till the ceiling height. The existing parapet walls were left untouched and keeping the parts open till the ceiling height with a lot of planters alongside the parapet walls thus allowing for a lot of cross ventilation across the project and not requiring an air conditioner

80

Mysore House Program: Residential Location: Outskirts of Mysore Month and year of commencement: July 2018 The site is located in the Outskirts of Mysore, close to the airport, the site is part of an existing factory. The client demanded a Victorian style of architecture with a touch of contemporary. Gable roof was added to give that effect. The Boundary was to be designed in a way were it is really tall and also has some transparency from where people enter. So the tall wall was divided into two main segments, the clawed wall which projected out and the other masonry wall which stays back, the gap is then used for planters. In case of the wall near the gate, it got divided into 3 types Wall spans(D1.D2,D3) and the number of wooden members is then divided into 3 types(A,B,C), the combination of this 2 formed the boundary wall

Abacus House Programe: Residential Location: South Bangalore Site Area: 140sqm Built up area: 300sqm Month and year of commencement and completion: 08.2015 – 07.2017 An abacus is a device for making mathematical calculations. In a typical residential “BDA” neighbourhood in South Bangalore, sites are 30’x50’ and setbacks are bordering on zero to 2’. The Abacus house is designed around two paradoxical ideas.a. Over build on a small site (neighbours have already done so why shouldn’t we). Considering we are overbuilding how do we maximize the minimal resources of light and ventilation that are still available to us? The design cleverly works by the Creation of an experience of a large space by visually being able to see across the 50 feet of site. The rear and the front boundary wall from the same spot. Eliminating horizontal circulation Capturing every available open angle for light and ventilation.

87

Houses of Anegundi Type: Documentation Semester: 1st Year, 2nd Sem Anegundi now, consists of the residues of an earlier settlement, that perhaps predated Hampi as the seat of the Vijaynagar empire. Its primary economies revolve around the tourism that spills over from Hampi and some agriculture, in the fields that surround it. Located on the western banks of the Tungabhadra across the river from the Hampi ruins, a series of concentric, granite walls that run through the surrounding fields and hills mark the residues of what its earlier extents might have been . The temple, processional path, Rajas house, and several older relics exist alongside and under the everyday workings of the village. The study identified components of the structure of the settlement, making drawings to understand the relationships of house types and work to the larger structure. Clusters of houses were drawn out in detail to understand the typologies through the use of space and stories of inhabitation and transformation.

88

The Ajmer Project Type: Documentation Semester: 3rd Year, 6th Sem The project aims to enable methods of lateral thinking with the ability to examine a situation, take a position with respect to the questions that it raises, and arrive upon a strategy of intervention. The institutions to be examined in this semester are those related with religious practices and their relationship with the communities that they serve.
