Research and ANALYSIS

BRAND STUDY

BRAND STUDY

PRAGATI AS A BRAND Pragati is a pioneer in printing and packaging industry. The Hindi word “Paragti” stands for progress. As the name suggests pragati has emerged as an reliable associate for regional and international brands. With so many brands served and many more to come. Now in the third generation, Pragati’s tale of continuous growth has made the brand what it is today. Established in 1962, the founder Sri Paruchuri Hanumantha Rao wanted the company not to be big but to be best. Having an eye for the importance of visual media, he started with printing Raja Ravi Verma’s painting and continued his journey in printing. Same ideals then were carried out by his sons and now his grand children. Overtime this family business turned into a world renowned brand, honored with numerous awards in their journey. Today Pragati is the preferred partner of many of their customers for all their quality print requirements. It covers the full gamut of your print and packaging needs. They deal in sixteen industry verticals from printing to packaging solutions. Many of the top corporate and design-houses in India and abroad trust Pragati with their print projects. They are proud that many of their customers think of Pragati not as just a vendor, but a part of their team. Pragati is a one-stop shop that can handle all your requirements from structural design to production to distribution. Having the entire operation in-house ensures tight control over quality and faster turnaround. Pragati enjoys transforming vision into the final product, and have the experience and repertoire of tools to make it happen. More importantly, its their team with not just the skills, but also the attitude and enthusiasm to bring out the best outcomes.

BRAND INVOLVEMENT Overtime Pragati has been involved with most trusted brands in both regional and international markets. This brand association has build Pragati’s own brand as a reliable partner. As established, Pragati is just not vendor but a partner, this implements a sense of collaboration. As Pragati have already partnered with these the brand value of these brands also adds up to Pragati’s brand value making it more authentic.

BRAND STRATEGY Brand strategies involve a great deal effort while putting the brand out. These key strategies are clearly visible in the following statement: “We at Pragati will spare no effort to ensure complete customer satisfaction by: Partnering with our customers to provide cost-effective, timely & world-class printing. Seeking active involvement & participation of Employees at all levels. Actively investigating & investing in Technology to continually improve Quality & Productivity. Treating Vendors as Partners in Progress. Ensuring complete fairness in all transactions & compliance to all legal & statutory requirements. Contributing to the Society at large.”

As well established the core values of Pragati being trust and reliability by its costumers. Here we get to see how Pragati treats their clients. It reflects how much Pragati is inclined towards costumer satisfaction. Client satisfaction and building relationships overtime is Pragati’s key strategies. As a B2B partner, building up lasting relationship and providing unmatched services is what makes Pragati apart as a brand.

TECHNOLOGY Pragati is equipped with the latest technology and equipment to ensure high quality and fast turnaround. A high-level of redundancy (multiple machines that can carry out each operation) and minimum dependence on outsourcing makes us a reliable partner. Making products stand out with specialized finishes, printing on non-standard substrates. Protecting brand with security solutions. As a pioneer in bringing new technologies to the Indian market. From the spot UV technology which they introduced in 1996, to the UV presses introduced in 2005 which could print on a range of specialty substrates such as Met Pet, plastics, lenticular 3D, etc., Pragati have always brought technology to the market that helps customers differentiate their product from the crowd. Some of our latest technologies are featured below: Metal-tone : Our Metal-tone technology can transfer metallic foils in very fine lines and halftones. Hot foil stamping cannot achieve such fine details. This foil can also be overprinted, opening up possibilities of a wide range of metallic colors. HoloTrance : HoloTrance is our technology of transferring holographic patterns onto the substrate – the main benefits being that selected areas can be holo-varnished. This is also a eco-friendly option as it does not involve laminating a holo-pattern plastic film to the substrate.

14

Pragati Authenticate : Pragati Authenticate is a suite of security solutions which run the complete gamut from anti-copy to hidden-images to encoded electronic verification systems. These solutions deter counterfeiting and improve your end-users confidence on the authenticity of your product. Green Bond : Green Bond is a cold-seal adhesive technology licensed from the world-renown Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT). This allows packaging of Blister Packs and Wallet Packs through simple application of pressure. Even heat-sensitive items can be easily packed as there is no heating involved in the process. 360° Packaging : 360° Packaging is our specialty window carton packaging, which provides complete visibility of the product from all sides. The top and base can be made from regular board while the central portion is made of transparent plastic – this allows ease of use in sealing, etc. The technology can also be used to fuse different materials other than plastic, opening up the possibilities of new and interesting carton designs. LENZ® : LENZ® technology allows custom areas with 3D lens effects on packages. This gives a very eye-catching effect, which makes the package stand out. LITELINER® : LiteLiner® is an extension to the LinerLess technology. It maintains the same construction as conventional labels, but cuts down on the backing paper from 60-65gsm glassine to 12 micron PET film. Since the construction is the same, nothing needs to be changed in your current labeling infrastructure – while at the same time giving you environmental, productivity and cost benefits. LINERLESS : LinerLess is an eco-friendly and cost-effective labeling solution, which also increases your productivity! It completely eliminates the liner, which is essentially a waste by-product of using self-adhesive labels. It is therefore very eco-friendly (as there is no waste liner), cost-effective (no cost of liner material), and leads to productivity gains (as a roll of the same diameter would carry lot more labels, leading to lesser number of changeovers).

BRAND IDENTITY Initially the name itself plays an important part in creating a strong brand identity. In case of Pragati, where Pragati stands for “progress” and honestly relates to continues growth and development motto of the company. Also it makes an perception of trust and reliability partner for costumers to achieve success. All these different words related to this brand name gives a bigger perspective for branding concepts. The name is easy to pronounce and is easy to understand. The visual element of the name “Pragati” when written in capital letters can be authenticity and a feel of strong presence over the years. Also, its very important what kind of visual message it gives when one read the word and here the name and typography are rightfully presenting all of what Pragati stands for.

The logo of the company also plays an vital role in establishing a strong brand identity. The main element of a good logo is "how easy it is to recognize and memorize". Easy to recognize what this visual data stands for,as in the history of brand or the services they provide. Memorizing it means a costumer already have an perception of the brand and is well aware about it. Pragati's logo same as the company has evolved overtime. As, it started with the thumb print of great founder Shri Hanumantha Rao, dyed beautifully in colors of spectrum similar to that of a cartridge inks. After so many years of branding and re-branding exercise the current logo is more detailed and easily recognizable and memorable. This uniqueness and the emotional appeal of this logo puts up Pragati's brand identity to multiple perceptions of brand identity with customers in a positive way.

Industry verticals Pragti belives in expansions and this moto of continues growth has turned pragati into printing and packaging giant. This rapid expansions of services is the reason that today pragati deals in sixteen industry verticals in both packaging and printing. This inhesitant approach to growth is why they are able to touch each industry with their services without any limitations and contraints.

Posing an advantage to handle logistics in in much simpler way as Pragati also handles timely deliveries. The twenty first global economics. where outsourcing and partnership is a healthy business practice. Pragati's manufacturing unit at such a key location will turn out to be an important asset to company. a direct entry in global marketplace, access to new clients and building up new valuable partnerships.

The building posses a modern architecture with a more utilitarian approach rather than to fulfill an aesthetic purposes. Still the main facade of building looks great with its modern shapes and lines arrangement in simple geometry. Though for someone passing on highway its not that difficult for someone to ignore the long stretched building with just three floors. Whole building is combination of blocks and pillars with glass facades, large windows and a well designed landscape. As per the plan the factory is divided into the operational area and office space. The front facing part of the establishment is the office space rising up for three floors. It includes large open office areas, personal cabins with other utility spaces. At the back the operational area is also divided in three main parts in three levels bottom to top. The basement works as an storage facility for raw materials and already printed paper rolls. The second level comprises of all the machineries facilitating sorting, printing and cutting operations. The third level is the packaging unit where all the flat paper cutouts are then turned into packaging boxes or similar collateral. A well systematized unit working as single entity.

SPACE STUDY

UNDERSTANDING SPACE As per the design demand the office area was examined and studied carefully. Measurements were taken with Bosch GLM 40 Laser Measurement Tool for best precision. Photography was done to analyze the space later for future referencing during design process. Also the study was done in context to human interaction as well. Marking out navigation paths and carefully understanding inlets and outlets for better mobility. The visual impact of the space was analyzed in order to come up with compelling experience for the visitor.

After examining and completing technical aspects and came up with a floor plan. With exact measurements and details. All measurements were in millimeters for better precision in design and minimizing errors during execution phases. The three spaces were recognized for further deep understanding. As each space needed a unique and different approach to design.

PROBLEM ANALYSIS

PROBLEM ANALYSIS

• Pragati's catalogue is vast, as working in sixteen industry verticals resulted in unmeasurable product styles and printing techniques. Which are now present in different forms, shapes and sizes. Resulting in a heap of books, catalogs and other printing collateral. • Putting a lot hustle to present the working style and technique due to inconsistent placement of books. • This hustling and increased physical activity raised economical issues increasing the chances of serious injuries. • Also this poorly stacked heap of books was giving a visual of unpleasant mismanagement.

After examining and completing technical expects and came up with a floor plan. With exact measurements and details. All measurements were in millimeters for better precision in design and minimizing errors during execution phases. The three spaces were recognized for further deep understanding. As each space needed a unique and different approach to design.

design PROCESS (phase i)

MAIN CENTRE

IDEATION

Vision The blank canvas has to be painted, the first space to be designed was the central hall, i.e the main entrance. The importance of space made this a more challenging task as the first space interaction is going to happen here. Both visual and physical aspects of this experience has to be weighed down with eye pleasing aesthetics. As the problems were already analyzed, the design direction went in to defining a functional solution. Keeping up visually interactive environment for a great brand experience.

Inspirations

Lines Inspired by Zaha Hadid's style of art, lines came out to be prominent elements of design. The ability to make the eye travel through the whole space on theses lines is remarkable. Also this plays an important part on the aesthetic end of design. As a tribute to the great architect some key features were then incorporated for better and proved design solutions.

Parametric design Parametric design is a process based on algorithmic thinking that enables the expression of parameters and rules that, together, define, encode and clarify the relationship between design intent and design response. Parametric design is a paradigm in design where the relationship between elements is used to manipulate and inform the design of complex geometries and structures. The term parametric originates from mathematics (parametric equation) and refers to the use of certain parameters or variables that can be edited to manipulate or alter the end result of an equation or system. While today the term is used in reference to computational design systems, there are precedents for these modern systems in the works of architects such as Antoni Gaudí, who used analog models to explore design space, and Luigi Moretti, who invented the term Parametric Architecture describing for the first time an architectural design process based on mathematical algorithms.

Arena A nicely spaced out is big space. The main inspiration came out of an arena. The visualization behind this idea was to create a well spaced out experience giving a feel of an arena both visually and physically. The interaction with the designed environment has to gives grand feeling for the space.

pragati logo The most essential part of the brand study came out to be the brand identity, the logo to be specific. Due to the glorious history of the logo, it seemed to be perfect as an inspiration for some good ideWation. To continue the same legacy and turning this identity perspective into physical branding extension.

INITIAL CONCEPTS

The plan to utilize as much space as possible and making it more functional space. The centre hall has to create a bigger than life experience with a high ceiling and a spaced out structure for a better physical human interaction.

Form generation

Hanging concept

CHINH

FINAL DESIGN

Sitting space at the center area for resting after a walk around is for an comforting experience and the realizing Pragati's potential while lying back. Putting a perspective of brand Pragati to a different level.

Furniture

The "infi table" with glass top resting on metal sheet body is just an representation how simple curves can bring aesthetic to dull materials. Visualized with an paper oval cut out "infitable" as creative design has lot of potential.

The reception, a key transitional space and the first place to look for. An appealing design was required yet forgetful. The answer lied in simplicity and minimum design. A plain play between horizontal and vertical parametric lines makes the space stand out and inviting.

RECEPTION

EXTERIOR

The transparent exterior will work as magnifying glass for the center hall and a bigger perspective of what "chinha" stands for.

Ripple effect A ripple effect occurs when an initial disturbance to a system propagates outward to disturb an increasingly larger portion of the system, like ripples expanding across the water when an object is dropped into it. The ripple effect is often used colloquially to mean a multiplier in macroeconomics. For example, an individual's reduction in spending reduces the incomes of others and their ability to spend. In sociology, the ripple effect can be observed in how social interactions can affect situations not directly related to the initial interaction, and in charitable activities where information can be disseminated and passed from community to community to broaden its impact. The concept has been applied in computer science within the field of software metrics as a complexity measure.

Final design

Knowledge Centre The space was designed as a knowledge center. Playground for sales team to present ideas to new clients and showcasing their existing catalogue. Separate spaces for separate client sets and sizes. The ergonomic concerns raised earlier were solved with hanging circular shelves for better division of catalogs and booklets, with a much better accessibility. Better body posture and less movement, resulting in increased ergonomic efficiency of design.

Materials As the forms and shapes were utilized as an functional element. A varied variety of materials were also explored for an executive finish.

furniture As the space was all about executive behavior and corporate exercises from sales to marketing. The corporate feel has to be preserved with iconic furniture masterpieces. A pair of tulip chairs and table designed by Eero Saarinen in 1955 and 1956 for Knoll. The OOTA table designed by EOOS for Walter-knoll with round custom couches as per the space requirements. As the space itself was a place for discussions and conversations ambiance and functionality has to be mingled up with comfort and thats why all the furniture pieces played an important part in completing the space.

ceiling As per the inspiration, the ripple then was recreated for the ceiling using led strip lighting behind acrylic boards. The functional part was to help the visitors in navigating different spaces and to understand the divisions. The concentric lighting was spaced at equal distance so that there is no inter-crossing of spaces. The ceiling was designed flat without any levels due to constraint of less height from the ground and a fall of ceiling downward would have resulted in congestion of both physical and visual space.

Conference room

Inspiration

Form generation

Ceiling resemling waves, with different step levels for a grand experience of conference to make visionary decisions for the future of the company. With incorporated lighting for better visibility the whole structure is functional as well as aesthetic.

Center table The initial concepts revolved around liquid flowy organic forms and an outer silhouettes of ovals, resembling water waves yet giving a solid strong vibes. This piece of furniture needed to be well thought of as extraordinary decisions were going to be made on this table. The conference table is envisioned as an organic flowing form and different organic shapes were explored in order to come up with the final form. Placed on point weights the base made out extra white corean to give a feeling of glow. A twenty sitter table to conduct large board meetings within the company and partners.

Form generation

Center table A flow as a liquid and bold as solid. Conceptualized in Dupont Corian the center table is functional element of the conference room. Integrated with USB ports for power and better connectivity for flexible discussions. Stabilized on point weights and an organic base the table itself design marvel. Table width of three ft for more space, the table can aid up to eighteen to twenty members. Large board meeting, client discussions everything is just well thought and conceptulized with in the functionality of space.

conference room

A space for making turnkey decisions for the future of the company, a room of ultimate importance the conference room came with its own challenges. yet the huge space allowed a room to explore. With main centre table, the side wall was changed into pannelled showcase for the clients paintings and a nuetral white was used to highlight theese paintings. Also the whole conference room was kept white for a bright and nuetral vibe for zero visual disturbance. The TV unit also was designed with similer design language to complete the overall space.

Furniture The custom designed Conference table needed a sitting system that will maintain the table's high aesthetics and functional aspects. Eames Executive chair, designed for Koll by Charles and Ray Eames came out to be best fit for the purpose. As this renowned piece of furniture does complete justice to the aesthetics and importance of the space.

conclusion

The whole project came out to be a great learning experience. Dealing with a new challenge everyday, tons of sketching and brainstorming, settling up on design differences among the team. Now though the project is completed its seems the journey and design process involved, turned out to be more important. All the sites visits, giving a sense of physicality and the extent of project in a more practical way. Learning about analog techniques used for measuring spaces and then turning the measurements into CAD drawings and 3d models. Creating virtual spaces to explore creativity and coming up with vague ideas everyday only to turn them into unique solutions. The concepts of spatial design have a great potential in designing unique functional spaces, should be practiced by more and more design professionals and should be taught as part of curriculum to the upcoming designers. Spatial Design will be playing an important part in human and space interaction. This approach to design is going to result in unimaginable sustainable solutions for upcoming future.
