Criminal probe launched in wake of deadly W.Va. mine explosion WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal prosecutors said they are investigating whether there was “willful criminal activity by the company that operates the West Virginia mine where 29 workers died in an accident last month. The U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of West Virginia said investigators are looking into actions by the mine’s operator, Performance Coal, and its directors. A letter asks the Labor Department to hold off pursuing civil cases until the criminal case runs its course.

PALIN FROM 1A they could get away with it, they would ban guns and ban ammunition and gut the Second Amendment, said Palin, a lifelong NRA member who once had a baby shower at a local gun range in Alaska. “It’s the job of all of us at the NRA and its allies to stop them in their tracks. Gun enthusiasts have trumpeted fears that their rights would erode under a Democrat-led White House and Congress, but President Barack Obama has largely been silent on issues such as reviving an assault weapons ban or strengthening background checks at gun shows. Obama also signed a law allowing people to carry loaded guns in national parks. Palin, the GOP’s 2008 vice presidential nominee, also praised tea party activism during an appearance in Char-

Beachgoers watch Friday’s launch of the space shuttle Atlantis at the Kennedy Space Center from Cocoa Beach, Fla.

Space shuttle Atlantis soars on final voyage with 6 astronauts CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Space shuttle Atlantis thundered away on its final voyage to orbit, hoisting a crew of six and a shipment of space station gear. Atlantis sped through a perfectly clear afternoon sky, blazing a trail over the Atlantic before huge crowds eager to catch one of the few remaining shuttle launches. More than 40,000 guests — the biggest launch-day crowd in years — packed the Kennedy Space Center. The shuttle’s destination is the International Space Station, which was soaring over the South Pacific at the time of liftoff. The shuttle should catch up with the orbiting complex Sunday morning. “Good luck, godspeed and have a little fun up there, launch director Mike Leinbach told the astronauts just before liftoff. He said he was speaking on behalf of all those who have worked on Atlantis since construction began in 1980.

lotte, and scoffed at suggestions that the movement had roots in violence, racism or rednecks before adding: “I don’t really have a problem with the redneck part of it, to tell you the truth. She proceeded to read several redneck jokes off her phone and talked about how she could relate to some of them. During an event earlier Friday in Washington sponsored by an anti-abortion group, she challenged Republican women to help the GOP “take this country back and elect anti-abortion lawmakers. She praised female leaders of the tea party movement and invoked the 2008 acceptance speech where she compared herself to a pit bull. “You don’t want to mess with moms who are rising up, Palin said at the Susan B. Anthony List event. “If you thought pit bulls were tough, you don’t want to mess with mama grizzlies. Palin said she understood

how some women might consider abortion, citing her own experiences as the mother of a child with Down syndrome and the parent of an unwed teen mother. Last year, Palin said that “for a fleeting moment she considered having an abortion when she learned of her son Trig’s prognosis. But she said Friday that abortion is morally wrong and women should carry a fetus to term. “It may not be the easiest path, but it’s always the right path, she said. She said Obama is “the most pro-abortion president ever to occupy the White House and asserted that the health care law would fund abortions. In fact, Obama’s health care law would not allow federal dollars to pay for elective abortions. Catholic hospitals and organizations of Catholic nuns backed the measure. U.S. Catholic bishops and major anti-abortion groups opposed it, arguing that federal dollars could end up paying for abortions. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY’s List, said Palin talks a good game, but her version of what American women want doesn’t honor freedom and independence. She mentioned the Democratic lawmakers whom Palin had targeted for their votes for health care overhaul. “First she puts targets on their back, then she wants the government in their bedrooms — what is Sarah Palin doing to Western women? said Schriock. EMILY’S List helps candidates who back abortion rights. Palin also criticized the media, singling out their coverage of her daughter Bristol, whose pregnancy was announced days after Palin was named the vice presidential nominee. Bristol Palin is a single mother who works on an abstinence-only campaign. She said some young women would see what happened to Bristol and perhaps be encouraged to seek an abortion instead of facing similar criticism.

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — Relatives broke the news to a Dutch boy who is the sole survivor of a plane crash in Libya that his parents and brother died in the disaster, as authorities said the 9-year-old would return home today. Rescuers found Ruben van Assouw still strapped in his seat among the plane’s debris. His father, mother and 11-year-old brother are believed to have been among the 103 people on board who were killed Wednesday when their flight from South Africa crashed. On Friday, his aunt and uncle released a statement saying they had told the boy of the deaths of his parents.

A man who thought his dog was wanting to go outside for a pit stop ended up being knocked out and having his generator stolen. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. Thursday at 366 Ferrell Lane, off Majolica Road. Nathan Averell told deputies from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office that he heard scratching, and figured the dog needed to go outside. When he opened the door, he said, he saw a Hispanic male with a long mohawk hair cut. Averell told deputies he figured his best chance was to jump the man, who he described as large. He said a furious fight ensued. At some point, the man got Averell in a head lock and struck him on the right side of the head, knocking him unconscious. Averell said he heard two Hispanic men talking before he blacked out. When he awoke, a generator valued at $400, which had been chained to the front porch, was gone. He told deputies that he checked inside the house, where his 3-year-old son was sleeping. Nothing had been disturbed.

‘Cozy’ ties between regulators and oil companies drawing scrutiny WASHINGTON (AP) — Declaring himself as angry as the rest of the nation, President Barack Obama assailed oil drillers and his own administration Friday as he ordered extra scrutiny of drilling permits to head off any repeat of the sickening oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Engineers worked desperately to stop the leak that’s belching out at least 210,000 gallons of crude a day. As Louisiana wildlife officials reported huge tar balls littering a beach, BP PLC technicians labored to accomplish an engineering feat a mile below the water surface. They were gingerly moving joysticks to guide deepsea robots and thread a mile-long, 6-inch tube with a rubber stopper into the 21-inch pipe gushing oil from the ocean floor — a task one expert compared to stuffing a cork with a straw through it into a gushing soda bottle. It’s the latest scheme to stop the flow after all others have failed, more than three weeks since the oil rig explosion that killed 11 workers and set off the disastrous leak. Obama, whose comments until now have been measured, heatedly condemned a “ridiculous spectacle of oil executives shifting blame in congressional hearings and denounced a “cozy relationship between their companies and the federal government. “I will not tolerate more fingerpointing or irresponsibility, Obama said.
