The Salisbury Police Department investigated an armed carjacking that reportedly took place late Friday afternoon. Officers were looking Friday evening for a beige 1985 Nissan sedan belonging to a Salisbury man. The vehicle has a 30-day tag and new hubcaps. According to Salisbury Police Chief Rory Collins, the department received a phone call from a woman who told police she had gotten a phone call from her son, who claimed to have been forced into the trunk of his own car after being robbed at gunpoint while getting gas. According to emergency radio communications, the man did not show up for an appointment at the VA Medical Center. “Right now it’s really vague, and we’re trying to get more information,” Collins said. He added the department was unsure if the carjacking even took place in Salisbury. Investigators ask anyone with information regarding this incident to call the Salisbury Police Department at 704638-5333. Collins said police were calling on the SBI in an effort to track the man using the GPS devices in his cell phone.
Salisbury High talent showcase Three of Salisbury High’s premier clubs — Me Time, TRU Club and Key Club — will be hosting a “Salisbury’s Got Talent” Benefit Showcase on Thursday, May 20, at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium. Proceeds will help benefit the local American Red Cross. The showcase will include a variety of performances by Salisbury High’s student body and teachers. Among the scheduled performances are rock, country and gospel music as well as dance, step and tumbling. Healthy living tips and a raffle drawing with more than $200 in prizes will add to the event. Club members have petitioned local businesses to make in-kind support donations for the winning performers. They have also handled the advertising, planning, recruiting, organizing and prize collection for the showcase. STATESVILLE — Mr. Donald Connell Martin, 91, formerly of 723 Wood St., died Wednesday evening, May 12, 2010, at Autumn Care of Statesville. Born in Catawba County on July 20, 1918, he was a son of the late Everette L. Martin and Myrtie Blackwood Martin. Mr. Martin retired from Quality Oil Company and was a member and former deacon at Front St. Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On Aug. 25, 1939, he married the former Bertha Etta Bynum, who died Sept. 27, 1991. His second wife, the former Ruby Harmon Lowe, died Feb. 24, 2004. He was also preceded in death by a brother, James Harold Martin, and four sisters, Miss Lois Martin, Antha York, Mildred Rowe and Hazel Saunders. Survivors include a son, Edwin Martin (Debbie) of Salisbury; a daughter, Wanda Martin of Statesville; three grandsons, Christopher Martin (Kelly), Nicholas Martin and Justin Martin (Amanda); along with two step-grandchildren, Patrick and Benji Smith; and three great-greatgrandchildren, Riley, Ryder and Braylee Martin. Service: Services celebrating Mr. Martin's life will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Front St. Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Stutts officiating. He will lie in state at the church for 30 minutes prior to the service and burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will assemble at the residence of Wanda Martin at 1003 Radio Road. ROCKWELL — Mr. Stuart “Craig” Rufty, 56, of Rockwell, passed way Thursday, May 13, 2010, due to a motorcycle accident. Craig was born Jan. 2, 1954, in Chandler, Ariz. He attended East Rowan High School and was a 1972 graduate of West Rowan High School. He worked for National Starch, which is now known as the Henkel Corporation, for 35 years. He was a very active member of the High Rock Community Church on Bringle Ferry Road and a member of the HRCC Riders for Christ. He loved the Tarheels, Green Bay Packers, Atlanta Braves and Dale Earnhardt, Sr. Craig coached for the Rockwell Inter Civic League and the YMCA, and he had become an avid golfer. Craig was preceded in death by his stepfather, Russell Gillespie, and father-inlaw Roland Robinette. Survivors include wife Janet Riggs Rufty, whom he married April 3, 1999; father Billy C. CHINA GROVE — Mr. Willard Ray “Buck” Hubbard, 83, of 1889 N. Main St., died Thursday, May 13, 2010, at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury. Born in Lexington on March 23, 1927, he was the son of the late Robert H. “Garner Augustus” Hubbard and Sallie Phene Wilson Hubbard. Educated in Rowan County schools, he was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and Merchant Marines. He was a longtime member of Landmark Church. Earlier in life he worked for China Grove Cotton Mills, the VA Medical Center and as an independent truck driver. He retired from Grove Supply. Buck and wife Willie Sue enjoyed traveling the western United States. Buck and Willie Sue were full-time caregivers for their daughter, Annette, until her passing in 2005. In addition to his parents and daughter, he was preceded in death by his stepson, Teddy Martin; sisters Annie Lee Turner, Katheryn Bernice “Jack” Hubbard and Willa Mae Hubbard; brothers Lester Alexander Hubbard and Robert E. “John” Hubbard. Survivors are his wife of 52 years, Willie Sue Wilhelm Hubbard; daughter-in-law Betty Martin of China Grove; two nieces; and seven nephews. ASHEBORO — Myrtle Yates Jones, 83, of Asheboro, and formerly of Salisbury, passed from the loving arms of her niece, Brenda Hales (while surrounded by her devoted son Charles and wife Diane), into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at Randolph Memorial Hospital in Asheboro. She was born to the late Junius Barnard Yates and Annie Smith Yates Jan. 18, 1927. Myrtle was also preceded in death by her brothers, Charles Hildred, John Barnard and Mackie Allen Yates; and sisters Betty Lee Simmons and Velnor Yates Simmons, who were from Greensboro. Myrtle was married to the love of her life, John Charles Jones, on Jan. 19, 1952. They lived in many states and resided in Salisbury the last 20 years of their marriage. He preceded her in death on March 27, 2008. Myrtle became a resident of Carillon in Asheboro in November 2008. She enjoyed playing bingo and attending parties for every occasion. She was a sweet and gentle soul who enjoyed her family and friends immensely. A faithful member of Rowan Christian Church, she loved her church family, hearing God's Word and praising Him in song. Myrtle is survived by her children: daughter Sharon Jones and her two daughters, Kasey and Paige of Spencer; daughter Brenda Sofley and her husband Steve and their two daughters, Amy and Stephanie Sofley of Salisbury; son Charles and wife Diane and their three sons, Jonathan, Christopher (now serving in Afghanistan) and Timothy Jones of Pleasant Garden; and son William (Bill) Jones of Spencer. She is also survived by her wonderful great-grandson Brenden Sofley; brother Tal Yates of Browns Summit; and sister Marie Bryant of Temple, Ga. Also surviving are many loving and caring nieces and nephews, who visited her often and brought her much comfort and joy. Visitation: The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, May 16 at Lyerly Funeral Home, 515 S. Main St. in Salisbury. Trilby Beaver Fiddner SALISBURY — Trilby Beaver Fiddner, 88, formerly of China Grove, died Thursday, May 13, 2010, at Liberty Commons in Salisbury. Born Sept. 17, 1922, in Rowan County to the late A.B. and Ollie Jane Spears Beaver, she attended Landis High School. Trilby was a member of Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church and worked at the A&P grocery store in China Grove as head cashier and bookkeeper for many years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dighton M. Fiddner.
