An infield flyout ended the threat, and East scored twice off the hard-throwing Brenk in its half of the first. Troutman walked, stole second and took an extended lead when Will Sapp struck out on a pitch in the dirt. Troutman headed for third when Concord’s Smith fired to first, and the throw pulled Ryan Burris off the bag. Troutman scored on Noah Holmes’ groundout. Sapp advanced to third on a passed ball and raced home on a wild pitch. The Mustangs (24-2) didn’t get a hit until the fifth inning, when they scored two unearned runs against the Spiders (14-12). “We made a few mistakes early,” said Concord assistant and former A.L. Brown standout Ryan Petty said. “You give up two runs to a team like this, you can’t afford to do that.” East’s early lead held up when Smith lined out to center with two on against Troutman in the third. Tyler Burris’ hot shot up the middle shortly after Johnson took over in the fourth had RBI potential, but the ball went directly into the lefty pitcher’s glove. “I didn’t even see the ball come at me,” Johnson said. “I just caught it and threw it to first. I just felt it in my glove.” Johnson allowed a one-out hit in the fifth and struck out the next two batters. Andy Austin hit a grounder toward first base, and a short hop bounced away from Ryan Burris. The ball ended up near the dirt in front of first, and Sapp scored when Austin was ruled safe. Concord coach Derek Shoe objected to the call that Burris missed Austin with a tag, and Shoe was tossed while returning to the dugout. A wild pitch sent Holmes to the plate for a 4-0 lead, and Troutman doubled in the sixth to bring in LeRoy. Johnson struck out Ryan Goodman to begin the seventh and threw one pitch to each of the final two hitters. “I get pretty nervous,” Johnson said, “but after that first inning, I’m fine.”

It made sense because Hogan had doubled home Grkman in the first, but it also fueled Patrick Bearden’s inner fire. “Coach Cauble always says I’m a fighter and we were all excited,” Bearden said. “I got two strikes on me, but then I shortened up and went to the opposite field. It felt great. It was 2-2 for like forever.” Bearden’s sharp single scored Grkman with the go-ahead run. After Tyler Freeze walked to fill the bases, a wild pitch made it 4-2. Carson played great defense, especially Snow, the right fielder. He turned a liner into a double play, and a perfect relay from Snow to first baseman Kyle Bridges to Freeze cut down a run at the plate. “It was a great ballgame that lived up to the hype,” Cauble said. “It was two good teams fighting for their lives.”
Tonseth (4-3) allowed six runs — four of them earned — on seven hits. His own error did lead to the two unearned runs. Martin gave up just two earned runs on seven hits, improving to 8-1 for West Stanly, which next faces either North Lincoln or West Caldwell. The Hornets, meanwhile, return all but two seniors next year. “There’s no moral victories in the playoffs, but I know these guys will be back next year,” Maddox said. "They’ll work hard in the offseason and we’ll be back and they’ll get a chance to atone for whatever they feel like they left unfinished.”
SOUTH FROM 8B Weddington touched Penninger for a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, when he plunked a batter, yielded three hits and allowed a sacrifice fly. South made it 6-2 in the fourth when Miles doubled to right-center and scored on freshman Eric Tyler’s RBI single to center. “I definitely think that first inning shocked them a little bit,” Tyler said. “They realized they had a fight on their hands. We put them down and they never got back into it.” A pall of concern covered the Raiders an inning later when slugger Brandon Kersnowski sent a hanging curveball to the cleaners for a threerun homer that trimmed South’s lead to 6-5. “In a one-run game anything can happen,” Weddington coach Travis Poole said. “We kept hitting balls hard but right at people. Give them the credit. We’re a good team, but they were better than we were tonight.”

No one was better than Miles. The senior with the glow-in-thedark bat provided an insurance run when he crunched his second home run — and ninth of the season — on a 1-2 pitch leading off the top of the sixth. “That was just a mistake, and he hit it,” Chrismon said. “He hits PENNINGER those balls all the time.” It all added up to a hard-to-believe victory. “It just goes to show,” Poole said. “You can be on Cloud 9 today and someone can humble you tomorrow.”
