BRET STRELOW/SALISBURY POST

North Rowan’s Teaunna Cuthbertson leaves the competitors behind in her victory in the 100 hurdles.

FROM 1B Winston-Salem Prep, which had finished with a record time of 49.84 in the 4x100 a year earlier, took second Friday. White was the anchor as North ran another sub-50 time. A 49.90 last month set a Rowan County meet record. “We broke WHITE a record one time, so we were just trying our hardest to be the best and work hard so we could get further and further,” Jones said. White said she felt added responsibility as the final runner. “I had a lot of adrenaline,” she said. “We were practicing really hard (Thursday) and throughout the week. We were ready.” Bush, who finished 0.06

seconds behind Perquimans’ Leroya Banks (25.37) in the 200 final, gave North the lead for good in the 4x200 with a blazing third leg. Allen took the baton from Bush with the Cavs ahead by a comfortable margin, and they won with a time of 1:44.12. “We still have competition (in 1A),” Allen said. “It’s our hard practices and our coaches keeping on us, making sure we’re doing everything pinpoint and doing it well.” North’s other points came from Bush (third, triple jump), Banks (fifth, 400), Allen (sixth, 200) and Kiara Davis (seventh, 300 hurdles). The scoring from Bush and Allen in the 200 helped the Cavaliers gain needed breathing room as NCSSM made a late push based on its distance strength. “I’ve been in the sun with the long jump and the triple jump, and the sun really zapped me out,” Bush said. “I had this BRET STRELOW/SALISBURY POST much left in me, and I had to North Rowan’s Tinka Bush, right, hands the baton to Cavalier give it my all even though I was teammate Timesheia Allen in the 4x200 relay. tired. We wanted that ring.”

2A TRACK FROM 1B ly Shields and Summer Taylor lead Salisbury’s girls. Bradshaw’s regional effort of 125 feet, 9 inches beat each of the 15 other state qualifiers by at least 12 feet. Bradshaw is seeded third in the shot put (3511.75) behind Kinston’s Cookie Wingfield (37-10)

and Andrews’ Sequaya Jackson (37-9). Ramos is seeded second in the 300 hurdles (45.81), fifth in the 100, sixth in the long jump and seventh in the triple jump. Francesca Evans of powerhouse Cummings is the favorite in the 300 hurdles (44.82). Shields is ranked No. 2 in the 800 (2:28) behind Brevard’s Kaylan Lance (2:25), and Taylor is the No. 5 seed in the 400.

1A CHAMPS

GREENSBORO — North Rowan’s Sam Starks completed his leg of the 4x200 relay and quickly turned his attention back to finishing the triple jump. He took a momentary break to splash water on his head. Starks, after later struggling through the 300 hurdles because of dehydration, trudged up the stands at North Carolina A&T. “I’ve never had a day like this running a track meet and working so hard,” he said. Highlighted by his second-place showing in the 110 hurdles, Starks helped produce points in four different events as North tied for sixth at the 1A state track meet with 35 points. Fittingly, The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (58) brought fractions of a point into play while denying Hendersonville (57.83) its third straight title. Starks also finished fourth in the triple jump, ended up eighth in the 300 hurdles and participated in a seventh-place relay with Daylon Gray, Augustine Wiggins and Darius Jackson. Princeton’s T.J. Wilson (meet MVP) won the 110 hurdles in 14.39, and Starks

crossed 0.56 seconds later. “I comp e t e d against some good athletes and tried to put to work everything C o a c h STARKS (Robert) Steele has taught me,” Starks said. “It paid off in the end.” Other top performers were Jackson (third, discus), Haustin Walser (third, pole vault), Garland Archie (fifth, shot put) and Andy Hallett (sixth, pole vault). Archie was seeded first in the discus, but he finished 11th. Event officials initially disqualified Jackson from the event for a uniform violation, but North won an appeal. “I was kind of relieved,” he said. “At first I was disappointed because I knew I could score my team some points.” Walser cleared 12-6 to finish behind Robbinsville’s Landon Hunt (15-0) and North Stokes’ Sean Nickell (14-6). The previous meet record was 14-6. “Senior year, I did want to win,” Walser said. “The difference with them, they have a pit at their homes. I have one three months out of the year. I could have done a little better.”
