OOLEEMEE — Growing up in Lebanon, Va., Scott Meade was the class clown. “In high school,” he said, “my teachers used to tell me, ‘Oh, you’re a comedian, but that will never get you far.’ Even at work, when things get too heavy, I need to lighten it up and people tell me, ‘You need to take that act on the road.’ “Finally, I thought, ‘What the heck? I’ll give it a shot.’ ” At age 46, Meade gave his first performance at The Inn, 1012 Mooresville Road, last fall. “I tried to take comedy and use it as a ministry to reach people,” he said. “People don’t want to be preached at anymore. They want people who they can relate to and who they can understand. “I thought sharing these funny stories with people would break down the walls and they would listen. ... Then I remind them, ‘Hey, God loves you and He wants you to love life here and now, not just when you get to heaven. “Heaven’s going to be wonderful and great, but God’s created this whole world for us to enjoy right now.” Meade has since performed at The Garage in downtown Winston-Salem and again at The Inn on July 10. Innkeeper Tom Millspaugh introduced him that night as “The Cooleemee Clown.”

So far, Meade said the response to his comedy routines has been very positive. “I always turn to my wife when I need guidance,” he said. “She’s my best critic. She’s the one I know who will be honest with me.” Karen Meade has offered her husband suggestions on routines he can “tweak” here and there, he said, but overall, even her response has been good. “I would love to do this full time and go from church to church or high school to high school or wherever and just remind people that you can enjoy life here now,” Meade said. “I would like to do it just as a service,” he said, “a whole comedy routine to break down walls and reach people who are just tired of being preached at. “I’m looking at different ways to touch lives. If it means me acting like a fool and getting their attention, then so be it. I’m willing to do that.” Meade covers a variety of topics in his comedy routines including stories about living in the South, driving in his wife’s pink Mary Kay car, cell phone messages and his childhood. “Depending on the situation, I’ve talked about playing cops and robbers on my bike when the front wheel flew off and I went flying through the air,” he said, “or the time we were watching Saturday morning cartoons and the house was on fire. We were too enthralled with the cartoons to even get out of the house.” Meade said nothing’s off limits, including his parents. “My mom says she’s going to write a book and tell all

my secrets since I’ve talked about her in my comedy,” he said. One of his topics at The Inn was his wife’s sports addiction. “Her biggest thing that she loves is University of Tennessee sports,” he said. “My wife thinks I’m sexy if I’m dressed all in orange ...” His three children — 22-year-old Danielle, 18-year-old Brandon and 11year-old Madison — are also subject to show up in his routines along with random thoughts that cross his mind. “I thought one time,” he said at The Inn, “what if I could do a sermon like Karl Childers in ‘Sling Blade?’ You ever seen that movie? ... ‘I like the way you talk ... We’re going to read about the devil and his demons ... Um huh.” During his most recent performance there, the audience laughed loudly when the fan on the stage started blowing his shirt up. “You’re flashing,” someone shouted. “Hey, at least I got one good laugh tonight,” he responded. Meade, who is mentoring to become a Foursquare Church minister, said he was 17 when he was first called to the ministry. “The bulk of my life has been faith-based,” he said. At age 14, one of Meade’s friends got him involved in a youth group at Lebanon Baptist Church. “It was about that time when I realized I had a passion for drama and musicals and just performing in general,” he said. “We used to tour performing musicals about the life of Christ.” After graduating from Lebanon High School, Meade joined the Air Force. When his service was up, he got a job as a computer programmer at Food Lion headquarters in Salisbury. He left there to take a job with Computer Sciences Corp. and works under contract as a project manager at Lowe’s Home Improvement headquarters in Mooresville. Since moving to North Carolina in 1989, Meade has mentored with ministers at several Rowan County churches. He’s currently doing a

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — BP and the Obama administration offered significantly differing views Sunday on whether the capped Gulf of Mexico oil well will have to be reopened, a contradiction that may be an effort by the oil giant to avoid blame if crude starts spewing again. Pilloried for nearly three months as it tried repeatedly to stop the leak, BP PLC capped the nearly mile-deep well Thursday and wants to keep it that way. The government’s plan, however, is to eventually pipe oil to the surface, which would ease pressure on the fragile well but would require up to three more days of oil spilling into the Gulf. “No one associated with this whole activity ... wants to see any more oil flow into the Gulf of Mexico,” Doug Suttles, BP’s chief operating officer, said Sunday. “Right now we don’t have a target to return the well to flow.” An administration official familiar with the spill oversight, however, told the Associated Press that a seep and possible methane were found near the busted oil well. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because an announcement about the next steps had not been made yet. The concern all along — since pressure readings on the cap weren’t as high as expected — was a leak elsewhere in the wellbore, meaning the cap may have to be reopened to prevent the environmental disaster from becoming even worse and harder to fix.

The official, who would not clarify what is seeping near the well, also said BP is not complying with the government’s demand for more monitoring. BP spokesman Mark Salt declined to comment on the allegation, but said “we continue to work very closely with all government scientists on this.” Retired Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the Obama administration’s spill response chief, insisted Sunday that “nothing has changed” since Saturday, when he said oil would eventually be piped to surface ships. The government is overseeing BP’s work to stop the leak, which ultimately is to be plugged using a relief well. Allen decided to extend testing of the cap that had been scheduled to end Sunday, the official who spoke on condition of anonymity said. That means the oil will stay in the well for now as scientists continue to run tests and monitor pressure readings. The official didn’t say how long that would take. Officials at the Department of Homeland Security referred questions to a statement issued by Allen; neither he nor BP officials could explain the apparent contradiction in plans. Suttles’ comments carved out an important piece of turf for BP: If Allen sticks with the containment plan and oil again pours forth into the Gulf, even briefly, it will be the government’s doing, not BP’s. The company very much wants to avoid a repeat of the live underwater video that showed millions of gallons of oil spewing from the blown well for weeks. “I can see why they’re pushing for keeping the cap on and shut in until the relief well is in

Iredell man charged with murder following shooting, pursuit Staff report

HARMONY — An 18-yearold Iredell County man was shot to death early Sunday, and another man was charged with murder following a vehicular chase. The victim was identified as Desmon Kennell Pless of Harmony. Iredell County sheriff’s deputies found Pless’ body when they responded to a report of a shooting at 186 Harmony Blend Drive in the community in northern Iredell. While at the scene of the shooting, deputies broadcast a description of a suspicious vehicle.

After the vehicle was spotted, officers pursued it to I-40, where two suspects were taken into custody, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Another suspect was later captured in nearby woods after being tracked by a police dog, and a fourth suspect turned himself in. Joshua Enoch Wilfong, 20, of Union Grove was arrested and charged with murder. He was being held without bond late Sunday in the Iredell County Jail. Detectives said Pless and Wilfong were acquainted and an altercation between them had preceded the shooting.

Any nonprofit in this county can probably give you all kind of ideas how to or how not to go about fundraising. Of course, I am not a stranger to fundraising since I work for the Rowan County Y. ESTER The Salisbury Speedsters MARSH is also a nonprofit organization. It is a youth track and field team with 24 athletes, 17 of whom qualified for the AAU Junior Olympics national championship. I do want to applaud all the youth athletes who have dedicated their summer to the sport they practice and love. Not just our track and field athletes, but also our RACY swim team that is going to the nationals the last week in July, our Legion baseball team, AAU basketball teams and more so many more. What dedication on the part of the athletes, coaches and, of course, the parents! As we all know it costs money to participate in anything, especially a competitive, traveling sport. With our track team we have sold shirts to

raise funds, sold tickets for food and gas cards, but the best one — and most fun — was the breakfast at O’Charley’s Our local O’Charley’s restaurant has a great fundraising “deal”. One of our track parents was familiar with this fundraising since she is also involved in AAU basketball. O’Charleys will serve breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. on a Saturday; you can check with the manager to pick a Saturday. They sold $6 tickets to the breakfast, which included three pancakes, two strips of bacon, scrambled eggs and unlimited coffee, tea, orange juice, and soda. O’Charley’s cooks the breakfast, and your team or school welcomes and serves the ticket holders. The best part is that 100 percent of the profit goes toward your cause. The AAU Junior Olympics is held at Norfolk State University and because of O’Charleys, you (the people who buy tickets for fundraisers), the Salisbury Speedsters, local schools; the Y and many other nonprofit organizations are able to do very special things for very special people. Dispute over go-kart race track heads to Board of Adjustment BY SHELLEY SMITH ssmith@salisburypost.com

ROCKWELL — A six-month dispute over a go-kart race track behind Carolina Pipe Cleaning in Rockwell will be discussed during Rockwell’s Board of Adjustment meeting Tuesday. The meeting is a continuation of discussion from the July 7 meeting. The track was built behind Carolina Pipe Cleaning, 302 Klondale St., in February for use by its em-

ployees. However, adjacent homeowners claim the track is not in compliance with the town’s zoning ordinance and plan to have legal representation during Tuesday’s meeting. According to Chris Stiller, a homeowner whose property line begins about 300 feet from the corner of the race track, he and fellow neighbors who are sick of the noise submitted a petition to the town. The petition, which voices opposition to the track, has been signed

by about 61 neighboring residents. After the petition was presented to the town, Mark Cauble, owner of Carolina Pipe Cleaning, pursued a conditional use permit to allow the track to stay. However, once it got to the planning board, the board found that the track didn’t meet two criteria — the track must be at least 500 feet from any properties in a residential (R1) district and it has to be paved. According to Stiller, the planning board did not issue the permit.

Cauble then pursued a zoning permit for a conditional use structure. The conditional use structure — the track — was for employee use, and the town granted Cauble the permit, which is what Stiller and other neighbors are appealing. Stiller said if the board of adjustment does not grant their appeal, the next step is superior court. “Our attorney is basing his appeal on the fact that it's still a race track,” Stiller said. “In zoning laws, an accessory structure has to have

some kind of connection to the primary business that's on that lot.” Because of the disputes with permits and zoning, Rockwell Zoning Enforcement Officer Tim Linker said an initial stay order (cease and desist) was issued April 19 until the planning board meeting on May 3. A second stay order was issued July 8 until Tuesday’s meeting.

t the time of the East Rowan Class of 1969s 40th reunion in October 2009, I also saw the section of Old Concord Road where I grew up, as well as the section toward Salisbury. I saw the old building that once housed the South Salisbury Township Fire Department, just down MACK the rail WILLIAMS from spur that crosses Old Concord Road going to Badin. In the late 1950s through early 1960s, I would go along with my father when he would stop and visit his friend, Tommy Webb, who ran the fire station. Tommy had blond hair and reminded me a little bit of a certain German actor who appeared in World War II movies of the time, except,unlike the actor, Tommy always portrayed goodness, which wasn’t difficult for him — by portraying goodness Tommy was just portraying himself. While my father and Tommy talked, I would play on the fire engines, walking along the running board, and holding on to the railings in back where the hose was folded up. Sometimes, I would climb up and jump off the fire truck, landing on a nearby couch. Actually, that sort of action wouldn’t have been performed by a fireman (unless he were in trouble), but more likely by the would-be victim of a fire several stories up , jumping out of a window to land on a handheld “trampoline,” tightly grasped around the edges by the firemen below. There was a little snack store, entered by a door in the middle-front of the building. In the summer, this door would be open because there was no air conditioning. Visible through the door was the floor-model drink cooler. The glass drink bottles were assembled between metal racks covered over with icy water, being real ice water because of all of the floating ice in it.

Eddie Hampton has been building and renting houses for some 30 years. “You can’t stay in one thing,” Hampton says of diversifying his businesses. At present, he’s concentrating in the rental market. He owns several properties in the Brenner Avenue area. Hampton recently moved a house to a lot he had owned for 15 years at the corner of Brenner and South Merritt avenues. He also owns the duplex units next door and the house on the other side of those. He works closely with Julius Waggoner of Waggoner Realty, which manages the duplex rentals. “He thought the house would fit perfectly on the lot,” Hampton says. “New construction is pretty slow, so we’ve looked at this as a new opportunity.”

Salisbury City Council set to receive Norvell presentation The Salisbury City Council will receive a presentation from participants in the Norvell Children’s Theatre video “Keep the Ball Rolling” during its meeting Tuesday. Scenic America honors Cleveland man for lifetime achievement

A Cleveland man has been honored for his work promoting the beauty of America’s roadways, communities and landscapes. Scenic America has given its lifetime achievement award to Charles F. Floyd a resident of Redmon Road. A former president of Scenic America, Floyd was honored FLOYD during a meeting in Washington, D.C. Floyd and his wife, Rebecca Floyd Barber, have spent decades restoring the Barber homeplace and farm. Charlie was on the forefront of the fight against billboard blight before most of us knew what it was,” Mary Tracy, president of Scenic America, said in a press release. “His continued enthusiasm for sharing his unparalleled knowledge of the billboard industry is invaluable to those of use in the sce-

nic conservation movement. Other members of Scenic America also praised Floyd for “not being afraid to expose the truth behind billboard bullies.” Floyd, a former professor of real estate at the University of Georgia, was one of the founders of Scenic America and served as its president from 1983-97. He has testified to congressional committees about the Highway Beautification Act on several occasions and served on the national advisory committee. Scenic America officials noted that Floyd has provided assistance and expertise on billboard issues to over 20 state and local governments and has authorized many articles and white papers on the billboard industry. He is currently working on the 10th edition of his book, “Real Estate Principles.” Others who have been honored with the lifetime award are Lady Bird Johnson, former first lady; Joseph R. Riley, former mayor of Charleston, S.C.

We’re all doing this in all good, family fun and shop fun, and he can’t handle it. We’re not bothering him.” Cauble said town board members have visited the track, sitting a block away, and have not heard the cars. But Stiller disagrees, and wants the racing to stop. “On April 11, a Sunday afternoon, I was sitting in my living room trying to watch television and this God awful racket started taking place,” Stiller said. “I went outside and I looked, and there were

I couldn’t even hear my television inside with that going on.” Stiller said the police and town board members said there was nothing they could do about it. “That has been the story this whole time,” he said. “We are at wits end.” Cauble said he will comply with whatever decision is made by the town, but hopes he is able to keep the track. “My guys have all said, ‘You know what, Mark, we’ve done all we can do to have fun,’” Cauble said, even using stock motors that are not even as loud as a lawn mower. “The town has handled it better than expected.” The Rockwell Board of Adjustments meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Rockwell’s town hall, 202 E. Pixy Stix are like a drinking straw, closed off on both ends and containing flavored powdered sugar, enjoyed by tearing off one end of the straw and pouring the sugar into the mouth. This was kind of like a B.C. Powder version of a candy bar. The powdery sugar treat entered the blood more quickly — like a headache powder — leading to a quicker burst of energy for children and greater difficulty for parents. One of my other favorites from the snack shop resembled the drink bottles in the drink cooler, only being much smaller and made of wax. They even came in their own little paper carrying carton, styled after the cartons for full-sized soft drinks, except they were the size which could be carried by a small hand. These drinks consisted of flavored liquids of different colors, the color showing through the translucent wax,

sort of giving color to the bottles also. A purple bottle would invariably taste like grape, a yellow like lemon, red like cherry taste and the green one like lime. After the little drink was consumed, some chewing of the wax like gum was possible. Even though gum was sometimes swallowed, I don’t think that the swallowing of this wax was advised. When I passed by the former site of the South Salisbury Township Fire Department in October 2009, it had the look of total abandonment. All of the doors, both of human width and firetruck width were tightly closed. Doors closed so tightly, with not even the slightest glimpse of the inside, serve as an enticement to the curiosity of the onlooker, but as to what is now contained in that old building, I have no curiosity or speculation. I know that it is empty, because its contents were relocated to my memory many years ago.

He’ll add a refrigerator, and there’s room for a washer and dryer here, too. The 900-square-feet house has one bath and great windows in all the rooms. The house has several window air-conditioning units and baseboard heat. “I was amazed how good a condition the house was in,” Hampton said. “It’s a good, solid house. It was an easy house to move.” He adds, “It’s a compact house. In this market, that’s

what people want.” Hampton’s properties have a one-year lease, although he says he has longterm residents in the neighborhood. “It’s harder to buy right now,” Hampton says of the uncertain economy. “The rental market is good.”

Wake takes over as NC’s most populous CHARLOTTE (AP) — A state agency says Wake County has now passed Mecklenburg County to be the most populated county in the state. But Mecklenburg County leaders told The Charlotte Observer that the estimates from the N.C. Data Center may not be correct. The state agency estimates Wake County’s population at 920,307 while Mecklenburg’s population is 909,493. Wake County has several advantages. It is more than 300 square miles bigger and weathered the latest recession better.

SALISBURY — Ruth Ellen Randolph Kernodle, age 83, passed away Saturday, July 17, 2010, at Genesis Health Care. Born Dec. 16, 1926, in Gilford County, she was the daughter to the late Maggie Elizabeth Cates and Major Lee Randolph. She graduated from Gibsonville High School in Gilford County. Mrs. Kernodle was a homemaker and a long time member of Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church, an active member in Women's Society, a former member of the Board of trusties, and she taught in the kindergarten department for several years at Coburn Memorial. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by six brothers, Melvin, Osburne, Wesley, Herman, Jennings and Tommy Randolph; and one sister, Ailene Tarvin. Those left to cherish her memory her husband of 62 years, William “Bill” Kernodle, whom she married May 16, 1948; one daughter, Emily Connolly and husband, Roger of Wading River, N.Y.; three grandchildren, April Zay and husband, Brian of Hamilton, N.J., Wendy Mullikin and husband, Ethan of Santa Clara, Calif., Brien Connolly and wife, Amy of Syracuse, N.Y.; and great-grandson, Elijah Zay. Whigs and Tories of bygone days man was murdered in Buffalo Creek, North Carolina, because he was, or was mistaken for a Tory. Michael was a member of the Tory party. He would not fight the British during the Revolutionary War. In July 1777 there was an assessor named Michael Cresman. Sometime between July 1777 and Nov. 25, 1780 his murder was reported under the pretense that he was a Tory. It is said that Michael was murdered by a Capt. Starns of Rowan County. Other records show him involved in other activities in Rowan County. He must have been very out spoken in his beliefs and someone murdered him because of it. Michael and Elizabeth had two known children: Michael Jr. and George. Michael Jr. and George both married women by the name of Elizabeth. The maiden name of George’s wife was Hagler. On Dec. 15, 1787 Michael and Elizabeth sold to Michael’s younger brother, George 217 ½ acres, part of which included the grant to Michael Sr. in 1765. On the same date they sold 223 ½ acres to Andrew Gruse. By 1800 both Michael Jr. and George had apparently sold everything and were in Lancaster County South Carolina. Eventually the entire family moved to Christian County, Kentucky. There part of the families split up

tems were joined by an act of the state legislature. Over the years, the united school district tried to integrate in all sorts of ways. Students were bused into town from county neighborhoods. All sixth graders were sent to four downtown centers. A network of magnet schools was established, though by the 1980s, most of those bused were minorities from downtown. By the 1990s, the federal courts began issuing rulings discouraging forced racial integration. So at the beginning of 2000, in an effort to head off a lawsuit, the board adopted new diversity standards, replacing race with income. Under the policy, the goal was to have no school with more than 40 percent of its students on free or reduced lunch, or more than a quarter scoring below grade level. With 140,000 students in 160 schools, Wake County was the largest of about 70 districts across the nation using socio-economic status to maintain diversity. The system was considered a model for those looking for a way around racebased assignment scheme rejected by the courts. “It (the Wake County system) really was a beacon, a flag around which more and more people were rallying as they saw the positive effects of this,” says sociologist Gerald Grant, a professor emeritus at Syracuse University and author of the book “Hope and Despair in the American City: Why There are No Bad Schools in Raleigh.”

A R O U N D T H E S TAT E Rescuers looking for missing swimmers at Lake Norman CHARLOTTE (AP) — Rescue workers are searching Lake Norman in North Carolina for two people who went under while swimming off a boat and did not resurface. Mecklenburg EMS deputy director Jeff Keith said in a news release that four people had gone in swimming off the boat Sunday in a main channel of the lake northwest of Charlotte. The Charlotte Observer reported that scanner traffic indicated the missing were a teenager and a younger child. Officials would not confirm their ages.

It’s not. But in 1960, when desegregation first came to the Raleigh city schools, there was no pitched battle. In September of that year, 7-year-old William Craig Campbell — whose janitor father was head of the local NAACP chapter — braved a gantlet of spit and epithets and walked into the Murphy Public School. Despite petitions by 400 parents opposing desegregation as “not in the best interests” of white children, Campbell remained; one day, he would become mayor of Atlanta. Raleigh city schools integrated gradually, and relatively quietly. Wake County was another story. Between 1968 and 1976, Raleigh’s white population dropped by 11 percent, and this “white flight” turned areas just outside the Beltline encircling Raleigh into what one educator called “trailer city.” A 1968 editorial in The News & Observer warned that Raleigh was in danger of becoming a “little Chicago ... with hostile black consciousness and separatism growing with resegregation.” A proposal to merge the two districts was put to a referendum in 1973, and was defeated by a 3-1 margin. Fear of ‘resegregation’ fuels unrest RALEIGH (AP) — In the annals of desegregation, Raleigh is barely a footnote. Integration came relatively peacefully to the North Carolina capital. There was no “stand in the schoolhouse door,” no need of National Guard escorts or even a federal court order. Nearly 50 years passed — mostly uneventfully, at least until a new school board majority was elected last year on a platform supporting community schools. The result has been turmoil. The superintendent resigned in protest. A coalition of residents and civil rights groups filed suit. Months of rallies, news conferences and candlelight vigils against the feared “resegregation” of the state’s largest school district culminated in the recent arrests of four activists for refusing to vacate board members’ chairs. Locals are lecturing Northern transplants about the Jim Crow past; white school board members are quoting Brown v. Board of Education to the NAACP. “We’re not going to sit idly by while they turn the clock back on the blood, sweat and tears and wipe their feet on the sacrifices of so many that have enabled us to get to the place we are today,” says the Rev. It was said they hit a hornets nest here, Murder for that reason is very unusual today in this country, although it was not in those days. There we hit pay dirt. A very detailed article submitted by Carole Irene Chrismon Cook, of North Provo, Utah, filled in what we needed to know. Notice the change in the spelling of the name. Michel Christman Sr. was her great-greatgreat-grandfather. According to her he was in the area by Sept. 3, 1761. On April 6 1765, Michael Christman Sr. was granted 340 acres on the north branches of Dutch Buffalo Creek, which included his and Henry Sights’ improvements. Land grant improvements meant, they had to clear a certain number of acres, usually three or four acres each year, in order to keep the grant. He acquired an additional 200 acres on April 18, 1767 and 125 acres on Aug. 7, 1767 adjoining his property. On June 17, 1769 Michael and his wife Elizabeth sold the 125 acres to the Rev. Samuel Suther. From that transaction his neighbors were listed. When I eventually checked the Internet, a diary of a Mr. Clark, who was a brother of George Rodgers Clark (of the Lewis & Clark) records that Michael Chris-

ecently while working in the History Room at the Kannapolis Library, I had a visit from a couple, Jon Robert and DeNell Chrisman McBride, from Arizona researching a relative, who had received a grant for land in 1765. Granted by patent of King George III, under seal of William Lyon, LT. Governor. His NORRIS was DEARMON name Michel Christman from Germany. Records that far back are very scarce. They had found a map of the area, which showed the land to be 340 acres south of the Granville Grant Line in Cabarrus County. At that time the land was still part of Mecklenburg County. Another piece of information showed the territory was recorded in Wilmington. They had also been to the St. Johns Church archives to try to find any burial records. No luck there. The first thing for us to do was to check census records. Nothing could be found by that name. Then we searched our cemetery records. Nothing there either. Since the land was bordering the Rowan County line north of Rimertown, and the Germans had settled in

You are not alone. Millions of people have been laid off in the past, and millions will face unemployment in the future. Believe it or not, many people right around you understand exactly what you’re going through. Immediately after a layoff, most people feel some combination of anger, embarrassment, guilt, fear, isolation and despair. It’s not surprising. But after a job loss, you’ll be in a stronger position if you act according to your principles, not your feelings. If you allow your emotions to take control, you probably will spend your days paralyzed by depression. You have the ability to take control of your attitude and action plan. You can do whatever is necessary to become employed once again, provided you do not give in to negative thoughts and destructive attitudes. So where do you start? Everyone should have a plan of action in case of a layoff: 1. Make a written plan. Seeing your strategy in writing will help you focus your thoughts and formulate your

dreams. 2. Know your rights. Even if you’ve been fired, take time to find out your rights. There may be company provisions to which you are entitled. Sign up for unemployment benefits right away if you qualify. 3. Develop a coping plan. Live by a schedule as rigid as you did while you were employed. Get up at the same time every morning, and work as diligently at finding employment as you did doing your old job. 4. Make the money last. You may be tempted to use your severance pay, your savings or other lump sums of cash to pay off debts or splurge on a trip to make yourself feel better. Don’t do it. You don’t know how long the money you have will have to last. 5. Pursue new opportunities. You may look back and see your notice of layoff as the pivotal point that allowed you to combine your life’s passions with your employment. A new freedom has been thrust upon you. This may allow you to change course and do what you might never have thought possible. 6. Have faith. There’s no doubt you eventually will find the employer who is looking for you. In the meantime, don’t lose your sense of humor. Don’t ever doubt your worth, abilities and skills. And don’t ever give up. I can’t wait to hear about the next chapter in your life. Citizens are the losers with sweepstakes ban Internet sweepstakes, which I consider creative genius, have been declared lawful by numerous trial and appellate judges in North Carolina since 2005. Specifically, courts have held that since there exists a finite pool of entries and the attainment of any prize is not predicated whatsoever on what a sweepstakes participant might do or not do, internet sweepstakes do not constitute a game of chance, video poker or any other gambling device. Somewhere well past midnight on July 9, the General Assembly — for no good reason — and in apparent ignorance of the economic situation which currently exists in North Carolina (the state budget and all!) — passed HB80, which purports to make internet sweepstakes illegal. These businesses employ thousands of North Carolinians, obtain the necessary licenses, pay all applicable taxes and conduct themselves as legitimate business entities in accordance with all laws. Apparently, our legislators failed to consider rigorous regulation of internet cafes and the vast sums of money (estimated to be well towards half a billion dollars annually) that North Carolina could have easily obtained. HB80, as it now sits awaiting Governor Perdue’s signature for enactment into law, is, without question, the biggest missed opportunity in recent memory for North Carolina taxpayers and out state budget. Quidam benefice? In other words — who benefits from the passage of this law? Not North Carolina citizens and taxpayers. — Cindy H. Fraser

’ve written many “Letters to the Editor” over the years, perhaps far too many. My purpose has been to do what little I can to try to save this country of ours by showing many of the ridiculous things going on in our corrupt federal government and how our politicians (both parties) are doing all they can to destroy it. Obviously I can’t save it alone, I'm not that arrogant, but keeping silent when things are wrong means that I accept it. This I cannot do. Someone once said, “Divided we fall, united we stand.” Never before, at least in my memory, has this nation been so divided. And our leadership is doing nothing to bring us together. In fact, it’s doing all it can to divide us further. Some of us remember how we all came together during World War II and after the Sept. 11, 2001, disaster. We proudly waved our country'’ flag, we served in the military, we showed patriotism, we respected each other, we honored our heroes and our God and we prayed in schools without the fear of being imprisoned, fined or persecuted by left wing radicals. Our Constitution is being challenged at every turn by entities like the anti-American ACLU which do more for Gitmo detainees, NAMBLA and our enemies than they do for us. They see religion as a scourge on mankind and they are doing everything to eliminate religion. They even go after the Boy Scouts if they use public places. In short, they divide us at every turn and our government does nothing. Some judges even make de-uniting decisions and create their own laws in violation of our Constitution. They give felons and sex offenders light sentences or simply probation. Racial extremists expand racism by doing just plain dumb things that cause some otherwise all loving people to become racist. This is pure nonsense! The Department of Justice recently refused to prosecute three men who harassed voters in Philadelphia. This action by the DOJ will surely create more racists. So dumb! Why do they do this? Our government, rather doing what it’s supposed to do to protect its citizens, brings a lawsuit against a state that is simply trying to protect itself from criminals, drug dealers and terrorists from entering their state and our country. Is this a uniting action by government? How about ongoing government spending? Do you believe taxing us to pay for pork barrel projects, medical expenses for illegal aliens and now talk of giving 11 million illegals amnesty pulls this nation together? No way! It divides us further. Our country is falling apart, morals and ethics have taken a back seat to those who want the freedom to do everything and anything they please. God's Ten Commandments mean nothing to the radicals who are getting their way little by little protected by government. Today, the minority rules over the majority. How did this happen? The government let it happen. For our children, grandchildren and the unborn, I have to apologize for the mess you will inherit through no fault of your own. The government is robbing you now of the ability to achieve your own happiness. Perhaps, God willing, we'll see a return to a united country where we respect each other, help one another without fear of being tramped on for our humble, ethical and moral beliefs. It’s indeed a shame our country has fallen so far. People can’t find jobs; the government sent them overseas. We’re going to be taxed more and more; the government can’t stop its spending. It’s now spending 66 percent of our GNP, and we’re trillions in debt, most held by enemies. What’s our future? Our government can’t fix the problems; it’s too divided. So it’s up to us, all of us, to come together and replace those in Washington and Raleigh with folks who will do the job we pay them for. This November provides an excellent opportunity to start to turn things around. I hope we can take advantage of it by electing the right people who will serve us, not themselves. Now I know some of you will criticize me for what I’ve written. That’s OK, it’s your right to do so. If you do, please do it with some respect. Regarding Richard Roberts’ July 14 letter: Mr. Roberts apparently either didn’t read or understand the Pitts column I referred to in my earlier letter. The thrust was that extremists who begin statements with “We all know” without any substantiating evidence are simply lying. Pitts’ last sentence was key — “Prove it.” This is where Mr. Roberts and his fellow travelers fall down; they don’t back their opinions with facts. Mr. Roberts claims to think and speak for himself, but he sounds like the fellow travelers of the Tea Party. Coincidence? I doubt it. As for taxes, the fiscally irresponsible tax cuts of 2001, which benefited primarily the wealthy, will disappear next year. President Obama proposed retaining the cuts for those earning under $100,000 ($250,000 for married). Interestingly, those tax cuts helped turn a $236B surplus in FY 2000 into a $157B deficit two years later, the first in a string of eight consecutive deficits. Instead of asking us to pay for a war, Bush/Cheney tried Lyndon Johnson’s “guns and butter” approach, this time by funding the war with debt from our friends, the Chinese! What was the real effect of those tax cuts? A rough estimate, based on the 2000 and 2009 tax tables suggests a family of four earning $50,000 might have seen a drop in their withholding big enough to buy lunch every Saturday for Mom and Dad. Of the 2 percent of households earning over $250,000, their drop in taxes would range from $10,000 to over $200,000. Their average income of $415,000 (in 2008) would seem to be enough to live comfortable, even without the Bush/Cheney tax cut. Bottom line, we need to address a multi-billion dollar deficit. Cutting taxes only increased it, and the very limited available reductions in spending won’t either. We need to both increase revenue and reduce expenses; that’s called financial responsibility. — John P. Burke

Dog days in Washington ASHINGTON — When Congress stays in session during the dog days of a Washington summer, rebellion is always bubbling just beneath the surface. And sure enough, it erupted at a caucus of House Democrats one night last week, triggered by an injudicious comment from White House press secretary Robert Gibbs. Gibbs made the terrible mistake of affirming what all the Democrats DAVID know to be true, BRODER namely, that the combination of high unemployment, oil pollution in the Gulf of Mexico and growing casualties in Afghanistan has so aggravated the voters that control of the House is seriously at issue. Gibbs was denounced for telling television interviewers that the 39 House seats Republicans would need to take over to become a majority are certainly in play. For his candor, Gibbs was roundly roasted by some of those who could well be the victims of such an upheaval. The president himself hied up to Capitol Hill to make amends, but the underlying ferment remains. One White House aide told me, “They (the House members) really hate the Senate, but we made it easy for them to take it out on us.” The fact is that the Democrats are out of sorts — frustrated by the effectiveness of the Republican opposition that makes it so hard to pass bills in the Senate, and battered too by the inability of Washington to solve any of the big problems facing the country. They were greeted on their

I was sent an advance copy of another poll, this one done for the Third Way, a leading moderate think tank, by the Benenson Strategy Group, which has worked for past Obama campaigns. It suggests one possible way of shifting the odds. This rests on reviving, one more time, the favorite Obama tactic of 2008: Run against George Bush, even though he is not on the ballot. Unprompted, only 25 percent of voters in this survey said they think that if Republicans regain a majority, it will signal a return to Bush’s economic policies. By comparison, 65 percent say a Republican Congress would promote “a new economic agenda that is different” from Bush’s.

The difference is dramatic when Bush enters the equation. Obama’s economic agenda is preferred over Bush’s by 49 percent to 34 percent. But a generic conservative approach, pitting a leader “who will start from scratch with new ideas to shrink government, cut taxes and grow the economy” beats one committed to sticking with Obama’s policies, 64 percent to 30 percent. In the absence of any clear Republican platform for the midterm election like the 1994 Contract with America, it is hard to say what Republicans would actually do with a congressional majority. We know what they have voted against — all the major bills Obama has sponsored to cure the Great Recession and regulate Wall Street and rework the health care system. In a memo accompanying the poll, the Third Way authors claim they know that Republicans would echo Bush’s approach of cutting taxes and minimizing government regulation. They argue that by labeling a future Republican Congress as a Bush Congress, Democrats can beat the opposition back. But I am not so certain. One question in the Third Way poll asked which path voters prefer to jump-start privatesector job creation and economic growth — new government investments or cutting taxes on business? Cutting taxes on business won 54 percent to 32 percent. This sounds to me like Ronald Reagan returning to whomp Barack Obama. Gunmen massacre 17 at gathering in Mexico a local newspaper came under fire. A pregnant woman was wounded in the attack on the offices of Noticias de El Sol de la Laguna. Across northern Mexico, there have been increasing reports of mass shootings at parties, bars and rehab clinics. In the worst such massacre this year, gunmen raided a drug-rehab center in the northern city of Chihuahua and killed 19 people last month. In January, gunmen barged into a private party in the border city of Ciudad Juarez and killed 15, many of them high school or university students. Relatives say the January attack was a case of mistaken identity, while state officials claim someone at the party was targeted, although they have not said who it was. The killings in Torreon came three days after the first successful car bombing by drug cartels, an attack that introduced a new threat to Mexicoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s raging drug war. The FBI has sent a small team to the crime scene to offer technical assistance to the Mexican investigators, FBI spokeswoman Andrea Simmons said. She did not immediately offer more details. Mexican investigators have not said what type of explosive was used.

The first attack Sunday morning by a single bomber with an explosive vest killed at least 45 people and wounded more than 40 at a checkpoint near a military base in the mostly Sunni district of Radwaniya southwest of Baghdad. Some 150 Sunni fighters had lined up to collect their paychecks when the bomber struck, according to witnesses.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) â&#x20AC;&#x201D; A series of strong aftershocks in Alaskaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Aleutian Islands region Sunday followed a powerful earthquake that shook the remote area, but officials said there were no immediate reports of damage or injury. There also was no threat of a tsunami from any of the quakes. The U.S. Geological Survey said the initial 6.7-magnitude temblor struck at 9:56 p.m. Saturday and was centered in the Bering Sea about 155 miles southwest of Dutch Harbor. The quake hit about 21 miles beneath the seabed. USGS geophysicist Rafael Abreu said there were at least 11 aftershocks, including one occurring at 11:48 a.m. Sunday that had a 5.8 preliminary magnitude. He said that magnitude was still under review and could change. The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center showed a 6.2 magnitude for the same aftershock, which was felt in the tiny community of Nikolski, about 115 miles southwest of Dutch Harbor. The initial, 6.7-magnitude earthquake was felt in both Dutch Harbor and nearby Unalaska, the nearest communities of any size to the epicenter. Police in Unalaska, situated just across a bay from Dutch Harbor, said they had no reports of damage or injury.

The assailants arrived at the gathering in the city of Torreon in several cars and opened fire without saying a word, the Coahuila state Attorney Generalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Office said in statement. At least 18 people were wounded. Several of the victims were young and some were women, but their identities and ages had not yet been determined. Television footage showed the patio of the house streaked with bloodstains and white plastic chairs overturned beneath a party tent decorated with pictures of snowmen. Police found more than 120 bullet casings at the scene, most of them from .223-caliber weapons. Investigators had no suspects or information on a possible motive. Oil would have to be released under Allen’s plan, which would ease concerns that the capped reservoir might force its way out through another route. Those concerns stem from pressure readings in the cap that have been lower than expected. Scientists still aren’t sure whether the pressure readings mean a leak elsewhere in the well bore, possibly deep down in bedrock, which could make the seabed unstable. Oil would be have to be released into the water to relieve pressure and allow crews to hook up the ships, BP and Allen have said. So far, there have been no signs of a leak. “We’re not seeing any problems at this point with the shut-in,” Suttles said at a Sunday morning briefing. Allen said later Sunday that scientists and engineers would continue to evaluate and monitor the cap through acoustic, sonar and seismic readings. They’re looking to determine whether low pressure readings mean that more oil than expected poured into the Gulf of Mexico since the BPleased Deepwater Horizon rig exploded April 20, killing 11 people and touching off one of America’s worst environment crises. “While we are pleased that no oil is currently being released into the Gulf of Mexico and want to take all appropriate action to keep it that

way, it is important that all decisions are driven by the science,” Allen said in a news release. “Ultimately, we must ensure no irreversible damage is done which could cause uncontrolled leakage from numerous points on the sea floor.” Both Allen and BP have said they don’t know how long the trial run will continue. It was set to end Sunday afternoon, but the deadline — an extension from the original Saturday cutoff — came and went with no word on what’s next. After little activity Sunday, robots near the well cap came to life around the time of the cutoff. It wasn’t clear what they were doing, but bubbles started swirling around as their robotic arms poked at the mechanical cap. To plug the busted well, BP is drilling two relief wells, one of them as a backup. The company said work on the first one was far enough along that officials expect to reach the broken well’s casing, or pipes, deep underground by late this month. The subsequent job of jamming the well with mud and cement could take days or a few weeks. It will take months, or possibly years for the Gulf to recover, though cleanup efforts continued and improvements in the water could be seen in the days since the oil stopped flowing. Somewhere between 94 million and 184 million gallons have spilled into the Gulf, according to government estimates. The spill has prevented many commercial fishermen from their jobs, though some are at work with the cleanup. Some boat captains were surprised and angry to learn that the money they make from cleanup work will be deducted from the funds they would otherwise receive from a $20 billion compensation fund set up by BP. The fund’s administrator, Kenneth Feinberg, told The Associated Press on Sunday

that if BP pays fishermen wages to help skim oil and perform other cleanup work, those wages will be subtracted from the amount they get from the fund. Longtime charter boat captain Mike Salley said he didn’t realize BP planned to deduct those earnings, and he doubted many other captains knew, either. “I’ll keep running my boat,” he said Sunday on a dock in Orange Beach, Ala., before heading back into the Gulf to resupply other boats with boom to corral the oil. “What else can I do?”

35 killed in India train crash CALCUTTA, India (AP) — A speeding express train collided with a passenger train at a station in eastern India early Monday, mangling the carriages and killing at least 35 people, railway police said. The crash happened about 2 a.m. when the Uttarbanga Express slammed into the stationary Bananchal Express as it was leaving the platform at Sainthia station, about 125 miles (200 kilometers) north of Calcutta. Television footage showed twisted metal. The force of the crash was so intense the roof of one car flew into the air and landed on an overpass above the tracks. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Treasury Department failed to consider the economic fallout when it told General Motors and Chrysler to quickly shutter many dealerships as part of governmentled bankruptcies, a federal watchdog found. A report released Sunday by the special inspector general for the government’s bailout program raised questions about whether the Obama administration’s auto task force considered the job losses from the closings while pressuring the companies to reduce costs. Treasury didn’t show why the cuts were “either necessary for the sake of the companies’ economic survival or prudent for the sake of the nation’s economic recovery,” said the audit by Neil Barofsky, the special inspector general for the Troubled Asset Relief Program, the $787 billion stimulus program known as TARP. “Treasury made a series of decisions that may have substantially contributed to the accelerated shuttering of thousands of small businesses,” investigators said. Those decisions resulted in “potentially adding tens of thousands of workers to the already lengthy unemployment rolls — all based on a theory and without sufficient consideration of the decisions’ broader economic impact,” the report said. Obama administration officials said they strongly disagreed with the findings and said the audit focused solely on one element of a painful restructuring. ST. ANDREWS, Scotland — Louis Oosthuizen walked over the Swilcan Bridge toward a victory that was never in doubt Sunday at St. Andrews, another big moment in sports for South Africa. This celebration, though, carried a different tune. The drone of vuvuzelas, all the rage at the World Cup, was replaced by the skirl of bagpipes coming from behind the Royal & Ancient clubhouse. For the 27-year-old South African, the sound could not have been sweeter.

With a performance that rivaled the dominance of Tiger Woods at the home of golf 10 years ago, Oosthuizen led over the final 48 holes and blew away the field by seven shots to capture the British Open. “To win an Open championship is special,” Oosthuizen said. “But to win it at St. Andrews ... it’s something you dream about.” The timing could not have been better — one week after South Africa concluded a wildly popular World Cup, and the day Nelson Mandela celebrated his 92nd birthday. “It felt a bit special, really,” he said. “When I walked down 18, I was think-

Ronnie Eidson arrived at the 15th tee box following a bogey that left him with only a 1-up lead on Keith Dorsett in the championship match of the 32nd annual Horace Billings Rowan Amateur. Eidson’s errant drive hit a tree but received a fortunate bounce and landed in the fairway. The two players laughed, and Dorsett high-fived his opponent. “I got kind of the same break on the very first hole,” Dorsett said. “He pretty much returned the favor.” Dorsett has a long-standing friendship with the 57-year-old Eidson, who earned his second Rowan Amateur title in three years by claiming a 2-and-1 victory Sunday at Corbin Hills.
