The 1959 class of Rockwell High School held its “Golden 50th” reunion at the Salisbury Holiday Inn on Sept. 26, 2009. This class is distinguished by being the last class which graduated from Rockwell High School prior to the consolidation of Rockwell and Granite Quarry High Schools into East Rowan High School in the Fall of 1959. Sixty persons, including 34 class members, were present for the buffet dinner. The tables were decorated with green candles in hurricane globes and surrounded by greenery and white carnations, the class flower. Class colors were green and white. Gold runners were used on the tables with gold placemats. Favors at each plate included a miniature box of homemade mints with 50 on them and a gift bag with a brass Rockwell Christmas ornament and a 50th anniversary pen. Sybil Penninger Baker, chairperson of the reunion planning committee, welcomed classmates

Allison Crowell was named the 2009 winner of Childress Idol Oct. 4 at Childress Vineyards. Crowell also performs with her musician husband, Lee, as Allison Crowell and the Drones. Sunday afternoon, she played guitar and sang Allison Krauss’ version of the song “Baby, Now That I’ve Found You.” Crowell won out over 18 other contestants for the title of “Childress Idol,” which is modeled after the popular “American Idol” talent competition. Crowell will now sing the national anthem during the opening ceremonies on the grandstand of the Barbecue Festival and perform a 10minute set on the grandstand just before country music stars take the stage in the 104.1 WTQR Guitar Pull. Crowell is the daughter of Salisbury musician John Rice.
