Architecture between people and environment A building is merely a construct for inhabiting our imagination and our physical self. It is dynamic and complex in a way that even people can influence and change this construct. One aspect that is completely negated is the environment that shapes both these elements. It moulds the architect to take risks and adapt to the varying influences around the world such as climate change and governmental policies. The Architect is merely a facillitator in this deal, with or without having complete control over his/her design

ENTRY

+ C on ce p t The concept for the module is derived from the function of a plant cell. as the design thrives to survive on a hostile environment, it wishes to terraform the planet and its surrounding by incorporating some of the factors from back home. The cell wal of the plant is a complex structure that allows transfusion, transfision and other biological transfers with its environment to sustain its capabilities. with this, the module is developed in so that the form and the structure of the walls acts a cell wall that helps to transfer heat from the outside atmosphere and in to the habitat so that it helps to maintain a balanced temperature for the inhabitants. It also helps in absorbing the internal humidity when it is present and in other forms such as respiration by plants and humans. this helps is in producing portable water. The plantorium is the separate modified version of the induvidual module. It is faraday’s cage for growing plants and producing oxygen. Portable water ad other nutrients are absorbed from the ground to produce food and portable water for everyone.

+ Dev el opm ent The design programs are integrated together and is capable of self sustaining in the environmental conditions of kepler 186f. The habitat can support a population of 4 dwellers and can also be extended. sihu is able to produce oxygen on its own in the plantorium by absorbing nutrients from the soil and co2 from the machines and humans in the living quarters. water is reused here (even human urine) through the method of converting waste water to portable water by adding iodine in the water and treating it. energy is harvested using solar panels and since the sun isn’t as radiant as ours it requires more solar panels to be fixed.

+ Outc om e The design was focused on the outer conceptual shell and one main internal space while fulfilling the other requirements. The program was made to withstand the climatic conditions and anomolies through its aerodynamic structure and plant cell roof for light and chlorophyl. The whole structure is 3d printed and inflated.

+ Br ief The challenge is to design a residential tower with 75 housing units on the site provided, incorporating biophilic design principles. The size of the unit is homogenised to a 2.5 BHK unit (2 Bedrooms + 2 Bathrooms + Hall + Kitchen + Study) so that the design’s clear impetus is on biophilia. The design is intended to improve the quality of life of its residents, while providing them more opportunities to personally engage with nature in a bout to improve their mental health and relieve stress.

+ Evolution // Form and Program

Before Hong Kong become a worldwide skyscraper city, it had subtropical rainforests. This is the essence of the design concept for the building. The concept - Creation of on artifical subtropical rainforest on site as a means of biophilic reaction for the occupants and the environment. Although creating an entire natural ecosystem may be close to impossible, it is very easy to replicate elements of a subtropical rainforest in architectural features such as - tall wooden trellis like the trunks of trees, evergreen plants, internal waterbodies and waterfalls and most importantly a climate controlled environment/building.

1. Stacking

2. Open Spaces

The site is located almost on the shoreline of Kowloon Bay in Hong Kong. This creates new technical aspects to synthesize the concept of ‘Biophilia’. Due to the rapid urbanisation and with skyscrapers, Honzg Kong is a great testing ground for a concept that involves moving away from the traditional urban life.

Cluster one has 4 units. these units are arranged in the four corners of the building. The best way to achieve biophilia is to engage first hand with nature so thus, each cluster shares a common community garden where they grow plants together.

The second cluster does has 2 large vegetation grounds. the plants grown here are for air quality enhancement and contain most of the evergreens and seasonal chinese flowers. They also have facilites for community gathering events and hosting

Materials were chosen to be locally available, natural, eco sensitive and sustainable. Vertical trellises were given on 2 sides of the outer balconies to give a woodlands visual and with plants growing on them, they create an aesthetic for the outer facade as well. The water screen from the bedroom wall falls down into the pond around the hall and in the fountain between the hall and dining. This creates a stark cooling effect. The sound also creates biophilic reaction with the habitants

Internal waterfall acts as a coolant as well. when the skin in biome contracts, it pushes the accumalated fresh air into the building through the atrium. the biome skin contracts when external wind force is brushed against the building. Humidity absorbers through dehumidifiers and plants, to collect and reuse the water for waterfall and plants.

The skin is made up of etfe plastic supported with triangular fixtures of steel wires. when the inside area is heated up the pods open up automatically due to the heat andallow the fresh air or cooler air to enter and when the air is filled, the fresh air is dissipated throughout the building through the atrium. Through planning, cross ventilation is achieved by letting air pass through the building. shading from direct sunlight through overhangs, greeneries and use of ETFE coated glass.

+ Artificial Ecosystems // Context

Nature once determined how we survive. Now we determine how nature survives. David Attenborough

Artificial ecosystems have some characteristics of natural ecosystems but are created and maintained by human beings. Artificial ecosystems are much simpler than natural ecosystems and are by far the most familiar surroundings in human experience. Like all other living beings, humans are dependant on natural ecosystem services to survive. So in order to keep our living conditions, it’s truly important that we preserve natural ecosystems. An artificial ecosystem meets all the criteria of a natural ecosystem but is made and controlled by humans. It is created to mimic a natural ecosystem but often is less complex and with a very low genetic diversity. Orchards, farmlands, a garden and man-made reservoir are some examples of artificial ecosystems. A natural ecosystem consists of a diverse species of plants and animals that significantly interact with the non-living things that are also present in the system. It is naturally sustainable and does not require the intervention of humans to survive. A forest and a pond are both examples of a natural ecosystem. An artificial ecosystem, however, cannot thrive productively without human supervision. Humans need to tend to each component of an artificial ecosystem to make it a sustainable environment. Rather than establishing our life style and built environment all over again for achieving ecologic design and sustainability, we need to shape them by taking as examples the natural eco-systems generated by plant, animal and microorganism communities sustaining their lives naturally. The eco-mimicry culture must be taken as the basis for conducting this study. Human beings have to design their life style, business world, economy, physical structures and technologies without tumbling their life sustaining ability in the nature’s core in order to survive. Living creatures in the nature survive by evolving as in constant interaction with other life forms

+ Site Context // Context It is an abandoned stone quarry. The site is located near the kovalam beach on east coast road. The site is ideal as its is near the backwater. the main users are the tourists who travel from chennai to mamalpuram this could attract large amount of crowds easily as one has to pass through the site to their destination. The vegetation in here is slowly decreasing due to the invasion of backwaters overtime Zone 1 has the maximum visitors. This zone consists of the main entry zone, the biomes the visitor center and the admin/maintenance blocks. since these are the main areas. This is the main attraction zone that has the biomes and supertree groves next to each other. Zone 2 has secondary visitors that depend on the main attractions in zone 1. This zone consists of the maximum area for landscape and also has the the secondary cluster of buildings. these buildings include the floral exhibition centre, convention hall and the restaurant. It also has the most number of waterbodies and also has unique landscape gardens and the mangrove forest by the coast. This cluster is independant of the main cluster and has its own unique features. It was arranged based the type of design, function and visitors. This is also the largest zone in the park. Zone 3 consists of the stage area which receives the most footfall during specific timings and season when there is an event. It’s located the furthest and mostly inactive. This is a special zone which is the most distant area on site. It has the main stage

The program is stretched on its longitudnal access and thinning out towards north. This puts the skyline into an array of blocks in two sides alone. Viewing from the other two side, the blocks are clustered together and appears hazy as seen on section A and B. The plantations have been removed to show the extent and the design more clearer. The main water bodies were upto 70m in depth. The tallest structure is one of the supertrees in the supertree grove. It stands at an astonishing 80m high. This is supposedly one of the tallest structures in the city of Chennai. The site is also advantageous to experiment with tall structures because within the cities jurisdictions, tall structures are not to be built as it can hinder the air traffic. The next tallest structure in the design is the tropical rainforest biome. It stands at a height of 65m from floor level whereas, if the inner depth inside the waterbody is also included, it extends further down up to a total of 140m. The exhibition hallf, convention centre, visitors centre, admin blocks, stage area and the fine dining restaurant area ll not above 20m in height. The car parking at underground level extends only up to one level which is 4m in depth. The heights of the entire design can be seen as an up and down progression with a gradual decline in heights from the biome till the stage. A heirarchy and rythym is followed in these arrangements.

+ Biome B / / Aquatic Biome This is the smallest biome inside the park. It stands at a height of 58m. Although, its relatively shorter with the other biome, it covers more ground surface area. It has its artifical aquarium in the center with floors upto five levels. It has more vegetation on each floor level and the main focus on each of these plantations are the way the plants are grown. Here, you will find exotic species of plants cultivated and experimented on. THey are grown through hydrponics and aquaponics methods. Unlike the other biome, most plants here area conditionally grown on floor plates instead of the ground soil. This biome has less humid conditions and the temperature are the most favourable to the visitors. The visiotrs can traverse through these plantations or swim inside the aquarium. There is also gift shops, amenities and lounges on the ground floor for the visitors. Each floor has a service room and a store room for staff operatinoos. This biome does not require any air conditioning systems but a stable supply of water.

+ Biome A / / Tropical evergreen Biome This is the tallest biome in the park. It stands upto 68m in height. The main attraction inside the biome is the artificially created waterfalls that increase the humidity inside the biome. The temperatures are maintained at sub tropical levels and to create a comfortable cool air for the visitors, coolant pipes run down on the floor boards that only exists where the visitors can walk through. The design of these biomes and the use skin around theb iome helps with the air conditioning and sustainability efforts for air preservation and to stop UV penetration in this area. The plants inside this biome are mostly the vegetation that are found in evergreen forests. Most of them are exotic but some can also be found in regions of evergreen forests in India which is not easily available in Tamil Nadu. This allows the user to traverse into multiple continents without talking a step outside their city. The 8 floors combine digital and organic forms of plantation for user engagement.

Zone B Cluster Details

The 3 buildings in this cluster are the fine dining restaruant, the convention centre and the exhibition centre. The convention centre is for holding major events which is given to the public for exclusive events as a part of the park’s revenue. The exhibition centre is made for holding seasonal viewing for plantations such as flowers and seasonal blooms. The fine dining restaurant is the largest indoor dining space in the park, it can cater up to 400 people with both indoor and outdoor seating. These buildings are accessed from the central supertree in the middle.

+ Restaurant

29

A spiral pathway runs around splitting to each of the buildings. There are multiple access point through ramps for each building as well. The convention centre is situated the furthest since it gets the most crowd. The exhibition centre is operational almost every day so it receives the second highest visitors with the cafe performing the third. These structures have sun shade louvres all around the facade to create more shades. Each building follows the same concept of artifical ecosystems with a central ecosystem in the middle of each structure. This is the last built up cluster as a part of the design.
