“I got what I deserve”
At 66, Jerry found himself sleeping rough in an abandoned car. He didn’t know who to turn to, and depression and other health problems soon took hold. When a friend suggested he come to the Irish Support & Advice Service, one of the advisers was able to get him a place in sheltered housing and sort out his pension, as well as ensure he had the medical treatment he needed. Now he comes to an ISAS pensioners group in order to get out and meet people. He had worked hard, this was only what he deserved.
Like hundreds of others that we have helped, Jerry and Aileen to the Irish Support & Advice Service. At ISAS we believe that Irish people who are isolated and vulnerable deserve the support they need to enable them to live healthy, contented and dignified lives. We provide advice on pensions, housing, benefits, and health. We visit people who are housebound. We organise social groups for people who want somewhere to come and see friends.

Aileen’s arthritis had got so bad that she couldn’t make her bed or do other things for herself. Even though she was 73, the local authority said she could have a carer visit only once a fortnight, but shortly afterwards, they told her that a change in the law meant that she could not have help at home. She came to ISAS. An adviser got her an increase in her pension and a disability living allowance, and Aileen now has daily care to help her keep going at home. Aileen had worked all her life, this was only what she deserved.

The Irish Support & Advice Service was established in 1969 to help Irish people who were not accessing other welfare services or were overlooked by them. Since then thousands of people from all over London have come to get help to improve their lives, and our help has enabled many to remain living independently. ISAS helps over 2000 people each year, and enables clients to access benefits entitlements and pensions owed to them.
