Father,
I really want to become all You desire. Help me take an honest look at every area of my life this weekend. Bring to light anything I need to surrender to You. My desire is to exhibit a spiritual desperation for more of You. I want intimacy with You, Father. I year n for wholeness in every part of my life. This weekend is Yours. I am Yours. May You radically renew me beyond what I can even imagine. In Your name I pray, Amen.

“Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you” (Romans 12:2 The Message). “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2 New King James Version).
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect” (Romans 12:2 New Living Translation). “And be not fashioned according to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, and ye may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2 American Standard Version).

YOU ARE LORD I’m saying YES, Lord to blue skies and warm sunshine today. YES, Lord to friends and dreams, laughter, good health, games of racquetball, praise music in my heart and Your presence so precious and near. But I’m also saying YES, Lord to gray skies . . . maybe tomorrow . . . and rain that won’t stop, thunder so loud it smells of fear and being alone. I’m saying YES, Lord to tears and unfulfilled dreams. YES, Lord when the music has stopped and You feel more than a universe away. You are the King of my mountaintops (Oh, thank You for these times) but You are also LORD of my valleys (teach me to thank You for these times as well).

IT’S NOT ABOUT THE BUBBLE BATH! (2 Kings 5:1-14)
The time: 9th Century B.C.
SESSION
The place: Damascus—a beautiful little resort city that sits on the outskirts of the Arabian Desert. Main character: Naaman
13
Naaman was ________________ in command to King Benhadad.
SESSION
What does the Bible have to say about Naaman? “By him, God had given ________________ unto Syria.” Naaman was God-blessed, God-__________________ and God-used—as well as _______________ and honorable. Scripture also says that “he was a mighty man of _____________.” This means that he was courageous and _________________. After Scripture has said all these wonderful things about Naaman, there’s a comma—not a period—and then five words. “So he was a great hero, ______ ______ ______ _____ _________________” (2 Kings 5:1 The Living Bible).
“Bands of Syrians had invaded the land of Israel and among their captives was a little girl who had been given to Naaman’s wife as a maid. One days the girl said to her mistress, I wish my master would go to see the prophet in Samaria. He would heal him of his leprosy!” (2 Kings 5:2-3 The Living Bible). She came from a home that ________________ _____ _______. She was living out her __________________ __________________. The king sent an official letter and gifts with Naaman. So we now see this general rolling through the countryside with _________ pounds of silver, 240 pounds of __________, and at least _____ full sets of _____________. This is a treasure with an estimated value of nearly $______________!
14
Though Naaman is consumed with the problem on the outside of his body, there’s actually an even greater problem on the inside. It’s the issue of ____________. Elisha’s errand boy delivers the prescription to Naaman: “Go and wash in the ____________ River _____ times, and you’ll be healed.”
SESSION
Here’s the deal: Naaman wanted to skip the ________________ but still receive the gift of ________________. And this is the bottom line: WE CAN’T SKIP GOD’S PROCESS AND GET HIS GIFT. Skip the _______________ and forfeit the ____________. ___________ the process and ______________ the gift. Skip the process _______ forfeit the gift! Naaman’s ______________ almost cost him his life! In the healing of his __________, Naaman was also beginning to be healed in his _______________. Naaman’s pride was washed away in the Jordan with his leprosy. Elisha couldn’t be bothered to attend to Naaman’s leprosy, but when Naaman came to make a confession of his newfound _____________ in the God of Israel, Elisha received _________ and his _____________ ___________. So what does this mean for us? It’s not actually about taking a bubble bath. It IS about becoming totally ___________________________ in God’s sight!

GOING A LITTLE DEEPER How do you think the teen girl felt about being taken into slavery? GOING DEEPER
How do her actions echo her character?
Identify a difficult situation in which you were in (such as the girl in this story) and how you reacted. Are you proud of your actions? Could you have done something differently?
When has someone demonstrated this same kind of unconditional love to you that the girl showed to her master and his wife?
What things in today’s society can make an individual a slave?
Naaman had the outer problem of leprosy, and it wasn’t his fault. Can you identify a difficulty in your own life that’s not really your fault? How does God want to help you deal with is?
We talked about a variety of processes our ancestors went through when they desired God’s gifts. Can you think of other processes?
What process might God want to take you through this weekend in order to bring complete wholeness? (Pray about it.)

ABOUT LEPROSY Leprosy is an infectious disease that has been known since biblical times. It’s characterized by disfiguring skin sores, nerve damage and progressive debilitation. Leprosy is caused by the organism Mycobacterium leprae. It’s not very contagious—in fact, it’s actually difficult to transmit—and it has a long incubation period (the time before symptoms appear), which makes it difficult to determine where or when the disease was contracted. Children are more susceptible than adults to contracting the disease. All forms of the disease eventually cause nerve damage in the arms and legs, which causes sensory loss in the skin and muscle weakness. People with long-term leprosy may lose the use of their hands or feet due to repeated injury resulting from lack of sensation. Leprosy is common in many countries worldwide, and in temperate, tropical and subtropical climates. Approximately 100 cases per year are diagnosed in the United States. Most cases are limited to the South, California, Hawaii and U.S. island possessions.
Symptoms: • Skin lesions that are lighter than your normal skin color. • Lesions that have decreased sensation to touch, heat or pain. • Lesions that don’t heal after several weeks to months. • Numbness or absent sensation in the hands, arms, feet and legs. • Muscle weakness. Complications: • Cosmetic disfigurement. • Permanent nerve damage.

HAR HAR HAR When Albert Einstein was making the round of the speaker’s circuit, he usually found himself eagerly longing to get back to his laboratory work. One night as they were driving to another formal dinner, Einstein mentioned to his chauffeur (a man who resembled Einstein in looks and manner), that he was tired of speechmaking. “I have an idea, Boss,” his chauffeur said. “I’ve heard you give this speech so many times, I’ll bet I could give it for you.” Einstein laughed loudly and said, “Why not? Let’s do it!” When they arrived at the dinner, Einstein donned the chauffeur’s cap and jacket and sat in the back of the room. The chauffeur gave a beautiful rendition of Einstein’s speech and even answered a few questions expertly. Then a supremely pompous professor asked an extremely esoteric question about anti-matter formation, digressing here and there to let everyone in the audience know he was nobody’s fool. Without missing a beat, the chauffeur fixed the professor with a steely stare and said, “Sir, the answer to that question is so simple that I will let my chauffeur, who is sitting in the back, answer it for me.”

LIVING IN THE PALACE!
(2 Samuel 13:1-22) (2 Samuel 4:4) (2 Samuel 9:1-13) Tamar was the daughter of _____________. The Bible tells us that she was young and ___________________. Her story tells us that she was _____________ and courageous.
SESSION
Something was working against her: A dysfunctional ___________________. Many of us confuse ____________ with love. Lust has a lot more to do with __________________ than it has to do with love or __________________. Amnon was so in lust with Tamar that he made himself ______________________. He said to her, “Bring the food here into my _____________________ so I may eat from your hand”(2 Samuel 13:10 NIV). When Tamar went to his room, Amnon grabbed her and said, “Come to __________ with me, my sister” (2 Samuel 13:11 NIV).” Any sexual contact that happens after someone has said “no” is considered ______________________________. Tamar is now seen by her culture as _________________ goods. The Bible says that she spent the rest of her years ______________ and desolate. Her brother Absolom loved his sister, Tamar, but he couldn’t bring _______________________ to her. Though she was a daughter of the _____________, she lived the rest of her life as a desolate woman. God’s desire is that each one of us become radically _____________________. How do we know?
31
There are many pieces of proof in Scripture, but we’ll just look at two: 1. Isaiah 49:16: “I have engraved you in the ______________ of my hands” (NIV). 2. Romans 12:2 (NIV).
SESSION
“Do not _______________ to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the __________________ of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and ______________ will”.
God wants each one of us to become radically renewed in Him. HOW? 1. By not conforming to the _________________ of this world. The first time we see Mephibosheth in Scripture (2 Samuel 4:4), we notice two things about him: • He’s literally ______________________________________ into Scripture. • He’s known by a ___________________. (Saul’s son Jonathan had a son named Mephibosheth, who was crippled as a child. He was five years old when the report came from Jezreel that Saul and Jonathan had been killed in battle. When the child’s nurse heard the news, she picked him up and fled. But as she hurried away, she dropped him, and he became crippled.)
—2 Samuel 4:4 New Living Translation
Life had not been fair to Mephibosheth. It started out great! His father was Prince ____________________, and his grandfather was King _______________, the first king of Israel. Mephibosheth’s royal name was “Mirab Baal” meaning “opponent of Baal.” Baal was a ___________, pagan god.
32
Mephibosheth meant “Son of ________________.” Lo Debar was a city ___________ of the Jordan River. The whole area is a barren _________________________________. The literal meaning of Lo Debar is “the place of no ______________________.” Mephibosheth was hiding out in a desolate place!
SESSION
You are a child of the __________! You were never meant to live in Lo Debar. You were meant to live in the _________________! When Mephibosheth is ushered into the presence of the king, how does David address him?
David said, “Mephibosheth!” (2 Samuel 9:6 NIV) “Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table” (2 Samuel 9:7 NIV). “Mephibosheth bowed down and said, ‘Who is your servant, that you should show such kindness to a dead dog like me?’ ” (New Living Translation)
God wants each one of us to become radically renewed in Him. HOW? 1. By not _______________________ to the pattern of this world. 2. By the ______________________________ of my mind. Let God tell you who you are! Matthew 16:17 (The Message): Jesus says to Peter, “And now I’m going to tell you who you are, really are.”
33
#1 lie of the enemy: This thing is about your performance—not the ________________________. Jesus prayed for YOU in John 17. SESSION
I am the object of God’s ______________! Jesus is telling you right here—right now—that just as the Father loves Him, so He ______________ _____________! Write this down right here in your book: __________________________________________________________________________! How do I become radically renewed? 1. I don’t conform to the pattern of this world. 2. By the transforming of my mind. (Knowing who I am. I am the disciple whom Jesus loves!)
And WHY do we want to become radically renewed? Our answer is found in the next line of Scripture: So we’ll be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. THEN you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2 NIV). And what IS His will for us? To live like we ________________ ______ __________! To live like the ___________________ of His ____________________ that we are!
34
Oh, Father! Thank You for seeing me as royalty. I want to live in intimacy with You every single day. If there’s anything in my life that’s keeping me from experiencing Kingdom life, please bring it to my mind right now. I really do surrender all! I want to be renewed. Transformed. To actually LIVE as the disciple whom You love!

GOING A LITTLE DEEPER
GOING DEEPER
Read Galatians 5:19-21: “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God” (NIV).
Which of the above characteristics are evident in the story of Tamar?
What do we need to do to avoid these characteristics?
Now read Galatians 5:22-26: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other” (NIV). Discuss how Tamar’s life would have been different if self-control would have been demonstrated in her story.
Like Naaman, Tamar was dealt a tragedy that wasn’t her fault. Discuss the difference in how they each dealt with their tragedy.
40
How would Naaman’s life have been different if he had followed Tamar’s course of action in dealing with tragedy?
GOING DEEPER
How does God desire that we handle tragedy?
How could God have brought restoration to Tamar?
Has your self-esteem ever been as low as Mephibosheth’s?
How does our self-esteem reflect our relationship with Christ?
Is there anything in your life that you need God to completely heal, restore, renew? If so, will you allow Him to do that this weekend? Even if it means going through “God’s process” to get His gift? (Pray about it.)

GOD’S INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (John 5:1-18)
“Soon another Feast came around and Jesus was back in Jerusalem. Near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem there was a pool, in Hebrew called Bethesda, with five alcoves. Hundreds of sick people— blind, crippled, paralyzed—were in these alcoves. One man had been an invalid there for 38 years. When Jesus saw him stretched out by the pool and knew how long he had been there, he said, ‘Do you want to get well?’ “The sick man said, ‘Sir, when the water is stirred, I don’t have anybody to put me in the pool. By the time I get there somebody else is already in.’ “Jesus said, ‘Get up, take your bedroll, start walking.’ The man was healed on the spot. He picked up his bedroll and walked off. “That day happened to be the Sabbath. The Jews stopped the healed man and said, ‘It’s the Sabbath. You can’t carry your bedroll around. It’s against the rules.’ “But he told them ‘The man who made me well told me to. He said, ‘Take your bedroll and start walking.’ “They asked, ‘Who gave you the order to take it up and start walking?’ But the healed man didn’t know, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd. “A little later Jesus found him in the Temple and said, ‘You look wonderful! You’re well! Don’t return to a sinning life or something worse might happen.’ “The man went back and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. That is why the Jews were out to get Jesus—because he did this kind of thing on the Sabbath. “But Jesus defended himself. ‘My Father is working straight through, even on the Sabbath. So am I.’ “That really set them off. The Jews were now not only out to expose him; they were out to kill him. Not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was calling God his own Father, putting himself on a level with God” (John 5:1-18 The Message).

Love Connection Love is making a comeback. DAY
1
At least that was the slogan one church decided to use in their
determination to reach out to their community of 12,000. They printed business cards with the slogan, created a Web site that explained their desire to love people to Christ and started passing out the cards.
The pastor pulled out cash to pay for his meal at the taco drive-through and
simply said, “I want to also pay for whomever is in the car behind me.”
When he learned the amount, he handed the cashier his money and gave her
a card. “Please give her this card and just tell her that she’s loved.”
He later received a call from the cashier sharing how the recipient broke
down in tears when she received the card and the free meal. His church is following his example of loving their community in big and small ways to Christ.
It doesn’t take much.
A $2 taco. An outreached hand. Opening a door. A smile. Kind gestures.
Things random acts of love go a long way toward being the hands and feet of Jesus in our world. Why? Because we’re not used to it. Most of us are me-oriented. When someone deliberately places himself last and puts us first, we’re immediately drawn in.
Love is making a come back. What can you do today to genuinely show
Christ’s love?
60
Now the bigger question: Will you actually do it?
THINK ABOUT IT: “Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth (1 John 3:18 NIV).
Describe a time when someone loved you unconditionally. How did he or she show it? What was your reaction?
What have you done in the last two weeks to genuinely show Christ’s love to another person? And who was it?
What kind of difference does it make in your life to know
PRAY ABOUT IT:
that God truly loves you unconditionally? Does this difference show up in your lifestyle?
READ ABOUT IT: 1 Corinthians 13.
Ask God to give you an opportunity today to show His unconditional love to someone who needs it. Write about it in your prayer journal (a notebook designated specifically for prayer and answers to prayers). 61
Loving Out Loud I found out about the “love campaign” by accident. I was asked to speak at a series of special services at the church and couldn’t help but notice
DAY
2
how excited the congregation was about loving their community to Christ. One by one, they began to share how paying for someone’s meal, taking cookies to the fire station, making beds at a retirement home and mowing someone’s lawn was creating a stir in their small town.
Because there was no airport in this town, I actually flew in two hours south,
rented a car and drove to the church. I was unaware of what was on the rental car’s license plate, but after being in the church a couple of days, I knew I wanted to get in on the love action.
So I took one of the cards and headed to the local Sonic after one of the
evening services. I ordered my drink but wanted to pay for someone else’s. The car on my left was already eating, so I knew they’d taken care of their bill—as well as the car on my right.
When the young lady delivered my drink, I inquired about the few other cars
in the parking lot. “Can you find a car with someone in it who hasn’t yet paid for their order?” I said. “I’d like to treat them.”
She left, and the manager came out. “We’re confused,” he said. “We don’t
understand what you want.” (The world isn’t used to being loved, is it?)
“I just want to pay for someone’s order, but I don’t know who hasn’t yet paid.
If you can find someone, I’ll pick up that bill.”
He then ran across the parking lot behind me to a truck with two guys
inside whose food was being served through their window. “Don’t pay for it!” he screamed. “That lady in the blue out-of-state car with 666 on the license plate wants to pay for your entire order.”
62
I cringed. I wanted to remain anonymous. And I was laughing about my license

THINK ABOUT IT: “. . . as we obey this commandment, to love one another, the darkness in our lives disappears and the new light of life in Christ shines in” (1 John 2:8 The Living Bible).
Has anyone ever performed a random act of kindness for you? Describe the situation. How did it make you feel?

Anger Always Costs
I’m usually mesmerized by the athletic prowess with which Serena
Williams graces the tennis court. But during the U.S. Open on Sept. 12, 2009,
DAY
3
I stared at the T.V. screen in disbelief as the pro was called on a foot fault and launched a verbal tirade of expletives at the line judge. She had already been penalized earlier for racquet abuse. Her reaction to the foot fault cost her a point penalty as well as the set, the match and her chance at the championship title.
Was Serena justified in being angry? Probably so. The replay showed her foot
was not over the line when she served. Her words and actions, however, did cross the line. She had a right to be angry. She didn’t have a right to curse the line judge.
The Bible has a lot to say about anger . . . and our words. The apostle James
says that no human can tame the tongue, and that it’s full of deadly poison. How well we all know that once we’ve released a string of words coated with anger, they can never be brought back. Friendships ruined, marriages devastated, reputations damaged forever because of verbiage laced with anger.
But what about when we’re justified to be angry? When we allow Christ to
truly become lord of our lives, we surrender everything to Him. Including our rights.
How did Jesus respond when He was dragged into an illegal trial, flogged,
mocked and eventually crucified? He chose not to cling to His rights. Legions of angels were at His disposal. The same power that created humankind out of dirt was still coursing through His being. But He laid it aside for the greater purpose of paying for our sins.
64
The next time you’re angry—even though you may be justified—strive to see
beyond the immediate and look instead for the greater purpose. Anger will always cost you something. It cost Serena $10,500 and the championship. What could it cost you?
THINK ABOUT IT: “Your attitude should be the kind that was shown to us by Jesus Christ, who though he was God, did not demand and cling to his rights as God, but laid aside his mighty power and glory, taking the disguise of a slave and becoming like men. And he humbled himself even further, going so far as actually to die a criminal’s death on a cross” (Philippians 2: 5-8 The Living Bible).
Describe a time when you allowed anger to get the best of you and regretted it. What did you learn from the experience? PRAY ABOUT IT: Christ demonstrated anger when He saw the Temple being misused (Matthew 21:12-14). How can you discern when it’s appropriate to show anger?
How does inappropriate anger affect those around you?
Give God your temper. When you feel yourself getting angry, immediately ask Him to help you not say or do something that would be displeasing to Him.

Asking the Right Question DAY
4
Have you noticed that we often hide our real question behind a façade
question? For instance when we ask, “Why in the world did he get the promotion?” what we’re really wanting to ask is, “Why didn’t I get it?” “What does he have that I don’t have?” So often we ask the wrong question. But we’re not alone. The disciples
often did the same thing. In John 6:16, we read about a storm. The disciples were already in the boat. Jesus hadn’t joined them yet. Verse 19 gives us a closer view: “When they had rowed three or three and a half miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were terrified.” Jesus told them not to be afraid. He got into the boat, and suddenly they were on the shore! (Scripture hints that Christ just PUT them immediately where they needed to be.) When they got to the shore, the crowds who had been following Jesus couldn’t believe He was there. They knew He hadn’t rowed there. They wanted to know how He had arrived . . . when He got there. Jesus told them they weren’t asking the right questions. You see, their question really revealed the question behind it! They weren’t actually interested in Jesus’ ministry on the shore. Rather, they were into the spectacular. They wanted to know about the “magic-ness”of HOW He got there and WHEN it happened. Their focus was completely off. And Christ told them. In the next couple of verses (26-27), He tries to realign their focus. Will you allow God to realign your focus? As you think about your family, your campus, your friends, your job, your
66
community, your future. . . what questions are you asking? Jesus loves your questions! But He wants you to be asking the right ones. Consider the questions you ask. Is there another question behind what you’re asking?
THINK ABOUT IT: “Jesus answered, ‘I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous sings but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.’ ” (John 6:26-27 NIV)
What’s usually on your mind when you pray?
PRAY ABOUT IT: Are your prayers mostly asking God for things, or is there an equal amount of praise and listening for His voice?
How can you develop a more effective prayer life?
Dear Jesus, help me to zero in on the things You want me focused on instead of trivial matters. I want to be permeated with Your Truth.

A Revealing Question In Matthew 18:1, the disciples asked Jesus a question: “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” (NKJV)
DAY
5
They were assuming the greatest spot would go to one of them. It’s dangerous to assume things in our relationship with Christ. But they assumed. After all, the position of prestige in His kingdom will surely go to one us, they must have thought. We’re the Big 12. We’re the ones who have left all to follow Him. We’re the disciples. We’re the ones He chose. We’ve been with Him for three years. We’ve walked with Him. Listened to Him. Watched the miracles. Even duplicated some of His miracles—healed in His name—and in His power. Surely, when Jesus sets up His kingdom, one of us will be in a high position of authority right next to Jesus Himself. But which one of us will it be? Peter probably assumed it would be him. After all, He was a natural-born leader. He was always the first to speak, and the first to act. He was bold. Outspoken. An extrovert in every sense of the word. And Jesus did say, “On you I will build My church. You’re the ROCK, Peter.” And then at another time, Jesus even said to Peter, “I’m giving you the keys to the kingdom of heaven and hell.” And Peter did walk on water. Surely, underneath Jesus, Peter would be the greatest in God’s kingdom. Peter was assuming.
Have there been times you’re assumptions have proven to be wrong? Even
embarrassing?
68
THINK ABOUT IT: “Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited” (Romans 12:16 NIV).
What does it mean to be humble?
Describe someone you know who is confident yet humble.
Describe the most recent time you demonstrated genuine

humility.
READ ABOUT IT: Psalm 149:4; Isaiah 57:15; Micah 6:8; Matthew 23:12; Luke 16:15; Luke 22:24-27.
Dear Jesus, I don’t want to be prideful. Show me if there are any areas in my life in which I’m prideful, and I’ll commit those areas to You. Teach me humility, Father.
69
The Unanswered Question While Peter may have assumed that he would be in a high position in DAY
6
Christ’s Kingdom, John may have assumed the position would go to him. After all, who was closest to Christ during His time on earth? It was John. Though Jesus had 12 disciples, He was closest to three: James. John. Peter. And of those three, He was even closer to one . . . John. Who sat next to Jesus at the Last Supper? John. And John was so comfortable in His presence, he leaned over and rested his
head on the shoulder of Christ. So . . . surely . . . if Christ was going to put someone in as His “vice-president,” it would be John—the one He was closest to. But James must have felt pretty important as well. He was one of the “inner three” closest to Christ. And remember the Mount of Transfiguration incident? (Jesus, James, John and Peter on a mountain being visited by Elijah and Moses.) James hadn’t forgotten that. He felt privileged to be a part of such an experience. Obviously, Jesus trusted him. So perhaps James is thinking, I’m in the running. The question posed in Matthew 18:1 as to who will be the greatest in the Kingdom still hasn’t been answered, has it? What kinds of questions are you asking Christ? Your questions will reveal what’s inside your heart.
70
THINK ABOUT IT: “Love does no wrong to anyone. That’s why it fully satisfies all of God’s requirements. It is the only law you need” (Romans 13:10 The Living Bible).
Can you identify a time when someone stepped on you to get ahead? How did you deal with the situation?
What’s the danger of assumption in our relationship with Christ?
PRAY ABOUT IT: What can you do to grow closer to Christ?
READ ABOUT IT: Psalm 9:9-10; Psalm 34:17; Psalm 37:3-5; Psalm 61:1-4.
Pray Psalm 139:23-24 and place your own name into the Scripture. Ask God to reveal anything to you that’s not right with Him, and then surrender it to His authority.
71
Others Are Asking the Same Question All of the disciples were interested in vying for the position of DAY
7
prominence in Christ’s Kingdom. It wasn’t just Peter. Or John. Or James. Matthew was a pretty important guy as well. He had walked away from a lucrative business to follow Jesus. Surely, Christ saw a lot worth admiring in Matthew or He wouldn’t have chosen him. And the other disciples? Actually, they were assuming the same thing: This position of greatness in His kingdom will probably go to me. How do we know? Because right after Mrs. Zebedee (James and John’s mom) asked Christ if her sons could be in the two most important positions in His kingdom (the right and left) of His throne. . . the other disciples heard about it. And Scripture tells us “they were indignant.” They were furious. They were livid. Each one of them wanted the position of greatness in Christ’s kingdom. So what do we have here? Looks like we have 12 amazing disciples who have left all to follow Christ. But 12 amazing disciples who are full of themselves. Me. That’s what it’s all about. I deserve. I have a right to . . . And how does Jesus handle their question? Matthew 18:2-3 gives us His solemn answer. “Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.’ ” (NKJV)
72
THINK ABOUT IT: “You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought” (Matthew 5:5 The Message).
Identify a time when you pushed ahead to be first. Was anyone hurt? What was the outcome?
Has someone ever taken advantage of you to get ahead? What was your response?
PRAY ABOUT IT: What do you think it means to live with the faith of a child?
Ask God to help you live a lifestyle of JOY (Jesus first, Others second, Yourself last).
READ ABOUT IT: Psalm 42:5-8; Isaiah 12:2; Isaiah 40:2831; Luke 12:6-7; John 14:27.

Christ’s Answer to the Question
Christ answered the disciples’ question from Matthew 18:1 by telling
them they needed to become converted as a little child. Does that take you
DAY
8
by surprise? Do you find yourself thinking, These arn’t just any people off the street, Jesus! These are Your disciples. They’ve left everything. What do You mean . . . converted?
Jesus is talking about a deep, internal transformation. An arena of whole-
hearted commitment that forgoes rights and dreams and wants and positions and success. He’s talking about total surrender. Humility. Absolute lordship. Becoming as a child.
In His day, children had no rights. Jesus isn’t telling His disciples to act like
kids. He’s calling them to a deep, inner conversion away from self to absolute trust in Him. A child in His day was merely property of the parents. They had no prestige. They were at the end of the food chain. That’s exactly the position Jesus took when He entered our world. He left His rights, His throne and His perfect Kingdom and became human. He commands we do the same.
No rights. No position. No title. Like a child, we come humbly to Him in
complete trust. Have you surrendered everything to His lordship?
Jesus has answered the question: “Who will be the greatest in Your
Kingdom?” But we may not like His answer: “Stop concerning yourself with being the greatest, and start focusing on how to get in. Total surrender. Childlike humility. My LORDSHIP.”
74
THINK ABOUT IT: “Feed the flock of God; care for it willingly, not grudgingly; not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve the Lord” (1 Peter 5:2 The Living Bible).
Does Christ truly rule your life—or are there areas in which you haven’t yet released complete control to Him?
What difference would it make in your life to live totally surrendered to Him every single day? PRAY ABOUT IT:
How does trying to keep control of parts of our life hinder our relationship with Him?
READ ABOUT IT: 2 Corinthians 12:9; Hebrews 4:16; 1
Tell God that you truly do want Him to be absolute lord of every single area in your life. Sing the hymn “I Surrender All” quietly to Him right now. (Lyrics can be found on page 78.)
