Anna has become a popular celebrity chef and mentor through her role on Junior MasterChef school canteen once a week offering a three-course meal for one dollar to raise funds for the school. This was the beginning of her catering career. Anna accredits her success to doing what she loves, and having had a supportive family to encourage her to believe in herself and develop her passions. Her parents, an architect and a nurse, allowed Anna to leave school at 15 prior to completing Year 10, recognising that she had discovered a passion for cooking and music, and had found a way to cultivate these. Behind every successful talent you’ll generally find a strong support network of friends and family. After catching up with Eamon Sullivan and his family it is not hard to see why he has become so successful in various aspects of his life. 18 Offspring | summer 2012
E
amon Sullivan is not only an Olympic sprint swimmer that has won medals and broken world
records, he is also the 2011 Cleo Bachelor of the Year, Ambassador and model for Davenport underwear, an ambassador for SIDS, winner of Celebrity MasterChef, author of a cookbook, Eamon’s Kitchen, and owner a successful café, Louis Baxters, in Subiaco Square, with his business partner, Laki Baker – and his family are there for him each step of the way. With such a list of accomplishments under his belt at just 26 years of age it wouldn’t be hard to let the ego take over, but whilst chatting with him it is clear to see that he remains grounded and humble, in part due to his down-toearth roots. Upon meeting Eamon and his family you are instantly drawn to their welcoming energy and their genuine love and respect for one another. Then throw in a cheeky sense of humour and their ability to laugh at themselves and you get a good recipe for a great family dynamic.
“Our parents have always encouraged my sister and I to enjoy life, and give 100 per cent to everything we do. If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well.”
His loving parents, Pam and John, have been happily

John lovingly rolled his eyes at her, calling her a big softie, and continued to finish the family stories that she started to reminisce about. They loved the regular family holiday trips down to a farm stay in Pemberton when the kids were young, as they’d go fishing, milk cows, go to the beach and spend quality family time together. John recounts a trip to the Gloucester Tree in Pemberton which Eamon wanted to climb when he was only five years old. John was hoping that Eamon would get up a few metres and realise how tall and dangerous it was and back down. Unfortunately for John, as he then had to go up with him

to make sure he was ok, Eamon fearlessly climbed the 61 metres to the top. It was memorable for John as it was a good glimpse for him into Eamon’s determination and desire to succeed. Eamon comments on one of the best lessons that his parents have taught him. “They have always encouraged my sister and I to enjoy life, and give 100 per cent to everything we do,” he says. “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well.” Pam recalled how both Pia and Eamon used to sit on the kitchen benchtop as she prepared meals and baked, which no doubt enhanced Eamon’s confidence and passion for cooking. Eamon says if he hadn’t got seriously involved in professional swimming when he left school he was keen to take on a chef apprenticeship. However,

I’m not convinced that we, as parents, should be creating categories for each other’s parenting styles in order to compare and critique. I don’t believe any parent is going to fit exactly into one particular parenting category, and furthermore the categories themselves can create negative stereotypes that could lead to a lack of confidence on behalf of the parent. I say this because after doing some web investigation on parenting styles, I found a site that says I definitely fall into the “Push-over Parent” category (obviously their term for the “Permissive Parenting” style). Another site called my parenting “too soft” and yet another, “over-indulgent and weak”. Well that’s great. Thanks very much. Just those terms made me wince and feel embarrassed. I suffer enough guilt on a daily basis knowing my nanny is settling Isabella down with her puppy and dolly for her afternoon nap without having a website highlight my insecurities by labelling me a ‘weak parent’. I had to stop reading because I felt like a failure. What would be far more helpful to me as a single parent would be for experienced child-rearers to offer advice on particular problems parents might be experiencing. And then give lots and lots of alternative solutions to those problems. Sort of like case studies in parenting but using different scenarios. Let me give you an example. This is the problem in my house right now with Isabella who is just over two. I work fulltime so I often feel guilty about being away from Bells

So this is Every family celebrates Christmas differently. For some, it involves a traditional feast, Turducken and all, while, for others, a simple barbie at the beach is perfection. Everyone’s Christmas has something in common – family. Tara Dryland chats to a few “Perthonalities” about what Christmas means to them and their loved ones.
Lead News Presenter, Ten News at Five, Mum to teenager Jade. Being the youngest of five girls and with all my sisters having families of their own, Christmas is always a massive event. We usually spend Christmas morning in our own houses with our individual families and then gather together for a traditional lunch, usually at my sister’s house in Singleton. We make an effort each year to exchange gifts in the style of “Kris Kringle” and it’s always great to gather around and see the different gifts everyone has bought for each other. Having so many family members can mean we don’t often get to catch up all together as a group, and we don’t put too much focus on other celebrations like birthdays. I won’t always receive a birthday present, but I’m guaranteed a beautiful pressie at Christmas time! With over 25 family members present, the gift giving takes a long time, so by the time that’s finished, we’re well and truly ready for our Christmas feast. Food is the big focus for my family each year! It can be tricky fitting us all around the one table, but it’s worth the effort just to be surrounded by happy, smiling and relaxed faces. I’m really looking forward to seeing if my sister Tanya can master the art of cooking duck this year …. she did a pretty good job last year, but I reckon she can top it!

If we stay in Perth, we traditionally head to my parents’ backyard for a barbecue champagne breakfast that lingers on into a delicious lunch followed by a few games on the Wii (to work off all the sausages of course!). My husband and I are not very gift-focused and prefer to only get each other something small or actually needed. We tend to not send cards or wrap gifts in an effort to be a little more environmentally conscious, though I did wrap Tricky’s presents last year just to see him tear it off!

Visitors to this year’s Toddlerfest will be able to enjoy a wide range of educational experiences and entertaining activities including puppet shows on the big stage, baby animals in the petting zoo, playdough creations and bubble-blowing. Several other not-for-profit and community organisations will also have advice and displays in the Scitech entry foyer including Ngala, Community Child Health Nurses, Kidsafe WA and Playgroup WA, so parents can use the opportunity to tap into a range of helpful resources and connections. Toddlerfest runs 6th to 19th February. Free car parking is available (plus free permits for stays over two hours) and a secure pram park area is also allocated inside the centre. here’s a famous showbiz saying “never work with children or animals”, but it seems this advice has not been heeded by the organisers of the 2012 Toddlerfest at Scitech. Not only do they encourage thousands of children aged 0-5 to visit their interactive centre (a logistical feat in itself when 16,500 came through the doors with their parents at the 2011 event), they also host babies from the animal kingdom in the form of piglets, calves, lambs, rabbits, ducklings and chicks! Scitech’s Toddlerfest is now in its fifth year, after starting as Toddler Week in 2007, and growing each year to keep up with demand. Indeed, talking science with people who are so little they can’t quite sit up, only have a few words in their vocabulary, or who are more inclined to throw food than listen to an explanation on nutrition can be a challenge! However, it is one that Scitech relishes as they realise

Traipsing around malls with a gazillion other people, who like to push their trolleys into the backs of my legs to alleviate their Christmas crossness, is an endurance test of a very high order. Possibly too high for the likes of me, even if I pretend I’m a feather floating calmly through the air. The trolley wars combined with the sheer effort of trying to think of new and interesting presents for people, particularly men who only seem to like toolboxes and a bit of cricket, and would be perplexed by a natty basket of male skincare products, is bothersome. Surely a tub of Seaweed Salt Scrub in masculine coffee-coloured packaging is more ‘yippee’ inducing than yet another rubber mallet from Bunnings? Or a cricket ball? Or a set of chisels? Regrettably, a potted history of ‘Christmas Presents for Males’ might indicate otherwise. I had thought about boycotting the mall this year and knitting all my Christmas presents myself: a chirpy tea cosy for Mum, a one-of-a-kind toolbox cover for Dad with a bonus chisel sleeve, a unique scarf for my sister, even one of those rugged fisherman’s jumpers for my husband (obviously not to wear on Christmas Day, though, because he might melt into an irritated puddle from the heat). Another big seller is the Kicky Pants Bamboo Ruffle Romper, which is available in four colours for $24.95. “When choosing clothing sizes, think about size and seasons if you’re buying a bigger size.” Debra McPherson from Sweet Creations (www.sweetcreations.com.au) recommends the Mamas & Papas Gingerbread 5 in 1 Playmat ($179.95) or Kaloo Lilirose Round Rabbi Doudou as great gifts for baby ($17.95). Ball and Skittle (www.ballandskittle. com.au) owner Clara Jane Stojsavljevic loves the handmade First Christmas Nativity play set in felt by En Gry & Sif, at $100.
Ms Stojsavljevic said the Peter Rabbit or Jemima pull-along ($44) was also lovely, as was the Noah’s Ark, handmade in Germany ($180). Trover Learning has a great range of toys and activities for babies and older children, catering for fun as well as learning and to suit all budgets. Sue Edwards from Trover said toys for babies should be bright and multi-purpose, such as the multi-award winning Manhattan range of toys. “The Manhattan Winkle is a gorgeous rattle which is perfect for girls and boys and one of my personal favourites.” The Winkle is bright, noisy, great for teething and suitable from birth, retailing for $26.50. The Skwish multi-coloured wooden rattle is another favourite from Trover, available for $29.

Petite Bijou Tee Pee, $239.40 from Sweet Creations (www.sweetcreations.com.au)
Wooden toys are very popular at the moment and make great gifts for little hands, according to Ms McPherson. “They make great gifts and are solid and long lasting,” she said. “They are definitely good if you are also looking for a keepsake toy like the Cherry Tree Doll House.” Janod puzzles are also a hot ticket item and Ms Gooderson said the Frenchdesigned puzzles were beautifully packaged in suitcases to avoid pieces being lost. They suit children aged 3-8 and retail for $29.99. The Early Rider Balance Bike is a fantastic product, according to Ms Gooderson, to suit ages 1.5-4 for $209.99. “It’s so light but it’s wooden so it’s sturdy and can’t overturn, so it helps their balance and actually grows with the kids,” she said. “It’s very popular. “For ages three years and up, the Micro Mini Micro ($112.99) scooter is great. It comes in pink, blue, yellow, green and orange and is a unique, three-wheel design that is more stable. The gorgeous range of Wheely Bugs are another favourite and come in a range of different animals, including a pig and ladybird for $99 (small). Ms Stojsavljevic said she loved Ball & Skittle’s Spanish-made Miniland ride on dumper ($100) and the retro Janod Scooter this Christmas. Ms McPherson suggests her personal favourite this Christmas, the Petite Bijou Tee Pee. “Kids get to use their imagination and create their secret cubby,” she said. You also can’t go past the Playmobil range for imaginary play – they do everything in this range. Prices start at just $9.99 and the quality will outlast the kids.

Over at Trover Learning, Ms Edwards said the Tolo cars for ages one and up were a great choice and were available in both purple and blue for $69.95. “They’ve got sound, lights, colour and movement but they’re also safe and sturdy,” Ms Edwards said. “The old fashioned toys are still proving popular, like spinning tops, which are $23.” For the girls, Ms Stojsavljevic recommends Pop Arty ($50). “It’s wearable art – these beads are so cool, even mums like to wear their kid’s creations!” she said. Ms Levitzke recommends the Lelby’s Bean Chair for children aged one to five years, available in 10 different styles for $99.95. “Bean chairs are also a great ticket item as they will be a practical and well loved gift,” Ms Levitzke said. Christina Lincoln from Playquip (www. playquipwa.com.au) suggests Pattern Play ($19.95) for ages 3 and up. “It’s all about following patterns, concentration, using imagination, planning skills and hand-eye coordination,” Ms Lincoln said. “To get the kids to turn off the TV and get outdoors, try the Mega Bug Viewer ($16.95) to help them explore nature and bugs.” Ms Lincoln said there were also some great puzzles in stock for Christmas, including the Breakfast Puzzle ($21.95), with 3D pieces or the Hand Puzzle ($9.95), great for learning to count to 10, colours, left and right.

Personalised gifts are always a great way to put a unique spin on a practical item and Stuck on You (www.stuckonyou.biz) have a fabulous range of personalised Christmas products for every member of the family. Hot items include the newly launched photo books (from $19.95), photo calendars (from $19.95) and beautiful personalised luxury bath towels ($39.95). Narelle Spencer from Stuck on You said their products were ideal for gift giving, stocking fillers and decorating the home. “Personalised with your child’s name or a special message, these gifts will be treasured for years to come,” Ms Spencer said. Also on the personalised front, Smallprint (www.smallp.com.au) specialises in gorgeous handcrafted keepsakes and jewellery. Our range of jewellery and keepsakes includes pendants, charms, keyrings, cufflinks and Christmas decorations, all finished with sterling silver findings,” Ms Garrity said. Sweet Creations has gorgeous Il Tutto Oliver Clutch ($129) or Amalfi Beach Bag ($99) that are very popular with the ladies. They also have a range of Mor Cosmetics which will be available on the website shortly.
under $20 Ms Rosario suggests selecting a useful gift rather than something that will inevitably be thrown out. “Being an eco shop we always recommend steering clear of gimmick gifts – they are going to end up in the bin pretty damn quickly!” she said. “It’s better to buy products that are good quality, well designed, and are going to have a long and useful life.” She recommends the Yetty Foldable Shopper, which is available in four designs and eliminates the need for plastic bags in a stylish way, for $5.95. Gift-giving can still be unique on a budget and Stuck on You has personalised sketchbooks from just $14.95. Books in general are a beautiful gift and Ball and Skittle has a range of Usborne Books for Christmas for under $20 or My Quotable Kid ($19.90), a cool journal to capture you kids memorable phrases. Once a caesarean always a caesarean? By Devon Plumley
Not anymore, choose your own birthing adventure!
The old adage, ‘Once a caesarean, always a caesarean’ is not binding, or even recommended. Let us explore your options so that when the time comes for your subsequent births, you can ‘pick a path’ and ‘choose your own birthing adventure’!

I
t astounds and alarms me to see the rising rates of caesarean section in Australia. The World Health
Organisation (WHO) recommends that between 10-15% of women will actually require a caesarean section due to either maternal or fetal reasons. Public hospitals in Australia sadly grapple with rates of approximately 25-35% of women birthing via caesarean section, yet private hospitals fare even worse with rates of sometimes greater than 50%. Birthing centres and midwifery-led practices using continuity of care from a known midwife compare more favourably with rates more in line with the WHO
Pregnancy & Birth recommendation, while home birthing sees rates of less than 10%. With many Australian women choosing to birth in private and public hospitals these statistics are sobering and frightening, yet illustrate the increasingly blasé attitudes many have towards, what is, serious abdominal surgery. You only need to ask someone who has had a C-Section to understand that it is not a walk in the park.
What’s the problem with having a caesarean section?
Many women are too frightened to attempt a VBAC due to scaremongering comments such as ‘your scar and uterus might rupture’ and ‘your baby could die’.

health.
It is for these reasons that women could be offered the option of Vaginal Birth After Caesarean (VBAC).
But is it safe to birth vaginally after a caesarean?
VBAC is safe when labour and birth is attended by a qualified midwife or doctor, the baby’s heart rate is monitored and labour progresses within an expected time frame. Any signs of baby distress, caesarean scar pain, vaginal bleeding or delay in progress will be discussed with you. Additionally,

Pregnancy & Birth
Won’t these reasons recur in my next pregnancy? The ‘Didn’t Dilate’ Reason: Often it is the baby’s position influencing cervical dilatation or the fact that many women are induced when their bodies are not yet ready. Many women feel the reason for an absence of, or slowing of, dilatation was that their labour was rushed, or that progress changed after the administration of pain relief such as epidural. There are a number of ‘events’ that may have impeded your cervix from dilating, however, just because your cervix didn’t open or opened slowly, doesn’t mean it will happen again.

Even if your partner is a seven-foot giant and you are a petite size eight, you will only be given the size baby that your body can birth, no matter what anyone tells you! And on that topic, your mother’s, sister’s, aunty’s or friend’s ability to birth has little to do with you. Don’t engage in the ‘size matters’ debate.

Many women feel the reason for an absence of, or slowing of, dilatation was that their labour was rushed, or that progress changed after the administration of pain relief such as epidural.

Perfect Potato Prints Rethinking the humble potato stamp. Use Christmas cookie cutters to make your own cards and matching wrapping paper. An adult will need to cut out the potato but children of all ages can have a go at the stamping. Crafting time ½ hour. You will need: ❏ potatoes (choose round, fat ones as they are easier for little hands to hold) ❏ paint ❏ kitchen sponge ❏ brown kraft paper roll (supermarket)

Strawberry Watermelon Stars Make an appealing summer fruit platter. Watermelon slices are easy to cut with cookie cutters. Even fruits such as rockmelon, honeydew or pineapple will work if your cutters are small enough. You will need: ❏ watermelon sliced ❏ small star shaped cookie cutter ❏ chocolate melts - melted (white pictured) ❏ strawberries ❏ toothpicks 1. Cut the green end from the strawberries so they sit flat.
2. Dip the other end into the chocolate. 3. Cut the watermelon slices with the star cutter. 4. Attach the star to the strawberry with a toothpick.
Silver Snowflakes This is a simple variation on a paper snowflake using a foil patty pan. Stick together a row of snowflakes to make a decorative Christmas chain. Suits ages 4 and up. Crafting time ½ hour You will need: ❏ large silver foil patty pans ❏ scissors
1. Flatten the patty pan out and fold it into quarters for small children or eighths for a more intricate (but harder to cut) design.

Behind the tussles of blonde curls, curious blue eyes and shrieks of delight is Aralie Jez, an incredibly happy little girl, and a child with Angelman syndrome.
I
n October 2009, Danneal and Shane welcomed Aralie Rose into
their lives, a little sister for Tyson. The arrival of a daughter was everything they had ever dreamed. But when Aralie was about four months old, Danneal suspected things were not quite right as her baby girl struggled to meet milestones or start experimenting with sounds the same way as other babies. Initially this was brushed off as simply being ‘over cautious’ and comparing her development to her older brother. However, a follow up hearing test indicated she would require grommets. The doctors also noticed a slight squint in her eyes and after some observation it was decided to surgically straighten them just before her first birthday. In the meantime, Aralie had been referred to sleep specialists for her erratic night time antics. “There were nights when she would stay awake for up to five hours at a stretch but there was never a consistent pattern to her sleep cycles,” Danneal said. The sleep specialist suggested perhaps there was more going on and

Babies medication was started for silent reflux. Aralie also started seeing a physiotherapist to assist with her general physical delays. There was a noticed improvement after each surgery and the reflux medication. But despite doctors’ assurances that she should catch up, Danneal still had concerns and began her own research online and stumbled upon ‘Angelman Syndrome.’ “The more I read about Angelman Syndrome, the more it matched Aralie,” Danneal says. “I had to accept that if she didn’t have it then something else was wrong and it was just a matter of time before we found out what it was. In the meantime we had to hope she might improve. It was frustrating and exhausting.” It wasn’t until her paternal grandparents babysat that an even more serious issue was realised - seizures. “I had been concerned for awhile that this unusual thing she was doing was seizure related. She would lose focus, her eyes would become glassy and then suddenly she would snap out of it but seemed disorientated and muddled, forgetting what she was doing prior to the episode,” Danneal explains. “But when I brought it up with

Aralie’s form of Angelman Syndrome is the result of a deletion on chromosome 15, the most severe type of the neuro-genetic disorder. Doctors told Danneal and Shane it is unlikely she will ever talk and will have an intellectual disability, developmental delay and difficulty walking. Along with, in the younger years, sleep disturbances and seizures that could increase in severity. “We told our parents but didn’t tell anyone else at first. It made for a very sad and lonely Christmas.” Aralie’s behaviour and appearance also fits the Angelman Syndrome nickname “Angel”, given because of the exceptionally happy, affectionate demeanor and frequent giggles, and, in her case, the hypo pigmented skin, light hair and light eye colour. “People often comment on how amazingly happy she is and while that is a typical feature in Angelman children,

which was formed in 2007 by a group of parents to support each other though the challenges of parenting a child with this rare disorder. Through the association Danneal has attended nights out for mums and family fun days. Aralie also receives physiotherapy, speech pathology and occupational therapy funded through Disability Services Commission but Danneal wishes there was more funding so treatment could be more regular. And while it is unlikely Aralie will ever talk, Danneal is determined to provide her with the tools to make communication possible.

Babies “We are teaching her alternative communication such as key word sign language and we use aided language displays. As she becomes older we may consider if an iPad could be useful too.” Amongst the appointments and therapies, the Jez family still finds the time for activities together and makes sure there is a special effort on doing things on an individual basis with Tyson, so he doesn’t feel left out. Looking ahead, Danneal says while she doesn’t expect things to be easy she is looking forward to what the future holds for her family.
“I had always thought when we got the diagnosis it would be a relief, finally an answer to the constant worries, but in the end the news simply saddened me.”
“If we were ever to have another baby and found out that child had Angelman Syndrome we wouldn’t really mind. The whole process to this point has really changed our perspective. We realise how much joy Aralie brings us, how she enriches our lives and how blessed we are to have her as our daughter.” For more information or to make a donation to the Angelman Syndrome Association of WA please visit www.angelmanwa.com.au or email president@angelmanwa.com.au

“Giving your kids cuddles, telling they are special to you and doing things with them that they enjoy are ways of showing you respect them, and respect is a type of kindness.”
Julie says that one of the earliest skills children develop in relation to kindness is sharing. “Children are egocentric, meaning they view the world in terms of how it relates back to them, but even from an early age they can still learn to share with others. This helps build the concept of what it is to be kind. You can encourage sharing by involving your children in preparing a snack to be shared at playgroup or kindy or bringing along a game to play.” Friendship is another great way children can further

Pets have often been touted as a tool for teaching kindness and research certainly indicates that caring for a pet offers many opportunities to teach children about meeting the needs of others. Mike Bryant, the Education Team Leader at RSPCA Western Australia, comments that just having an animal around will not teach a child kindness. “Children need to be taught how to relate to animals and are best guided by caring adults,” says Mike. The family pet will most likely be a child’s friend, companion and confidante and can teach children to love, respect and care for another living creature. Mike encourages parents to teach their children about ‘nice’ patting. “We start children on patting with only two fingers, especially on smaller animals like rabbits. Animals are not toys and unfortunately some children treat them as such. Discourage teasing and rough play with animals and encourage your children not to let guests be rough with your pets,” says Mike. Mike comments that older children can be involved in trips to the vet and taking responsibility for the general care of the animal beyond just feeding and walking your pet. Children over the age of 10 can be involved in things like grooming, health check ups, vaccinations and micro chipping. Even if you don’t have the time or space for a pet (and talking about this with your child reinforces the message that kindness involves being mindful of others’ needs), there are other ways that animals can teach children about kindness. “Get your children involved in fundraising or community service activities for the RSPCA or other animal organisations, or bring them to an RSPCA course where they can learn about animal welfare and care,” says Mike. If you have neighbours or family with pets, encourage your children to offer to wash and groom them, or take them for a weekly walk.
Altruistic opportunities in WA ◆ Christmas is a great time for giving, so take your children out to choose a gift for children their age and take it to one of the many wishing tree appeals. ◆ Sponsor a child the same age as your children through a local organisation like the Smith Family. Read sponsorship letters aloud to your children and let them see how the sponsorship benefits the child. ◆ Participate in a walk or run that raises money for a good cause. ◆ Donate regularly to the local food bank. ◆ Initiate a fundraiser through school to help people in need.

“The family pet will most likely be a child’s friend, companion and confidante and can teach children to love, respect and care for another living creature.”
Make it fun Last but not least, make kindness fun! The whole point of being kind is to make the world a nicer place, so show your child how fun it can be – pick them up and swing them around with a smile when they are kind or reward them with a trip to the park or a spontaneous cuddle. Children are inherently kind beings, so a little encouragement and some positive role modeling will go a long way – not to mention might just be a little refresher course in how great practicing random acts of kindness makes you feel yourself!

Schools are now aware of the dangers of BPA and what harm they bring to yourselves and your families. BPA is a chemical used in the manufacture of plastics and epoxy resins and is a known carcinogen. It has been linked to brain synapse and reproductive and developmental impairments. Cheeki is Australia’s leading brand for providing the sustainable alternatives to plastic disposable products. Cheeki manufactures not only bottles, but insulated flasks, coffee mugs, protein shakers and baby bottles. Their stainless steel products are completely BPA-Free, and have been manufactured from a Premium 304 Food Grade Stainless Steel, with no inside lining. Stainless Steel suppresses any nasty toxins from leaching into your liquids by being one of the purest materials to use for food and drink. Not only is Cheeki the safe, sustainable alternative to plastic, but it is more hygienic and durable. Starting from a very affordable $13.95, Cheeki will last longer and be able to handle more wear and tear than any plastic product competitor. Head Lice Hit 4 6 with New Natural Treatment It’s said that necessity is the mother of all invention and this was the case for the creators of a new head lice treatment, Hit Nitz 4 6. The creators, Melissa Barrett and Michelle Olden, were driven to find a new treatment after none of the products then on the market could rid their kids of persistent head lice infestations. Hit Nitz 4 6 is 100% natural with no poisons, chemicals or alcohol and uses a certified organic and natural active ingredient, wormwood. Hit Nitz 4 6 has two products: • Daily Control Spray - a 100% natural head lice defence spray (RRP $19.95) • Once Off Head Lice Lotion - a 100% natural head lice treatment that gets rid of head lice in one application with no combing required (RRP $22.95) Hit Nitz 4 6 is stocked in over 150 outlets and is available online at www.hitnitz46.com A fundraising option for schools is also available - schools have the opportunity to sell Hit Nitz 4 6 products through their P&Cs, with $4.95 from every bottle sold donated to the school. Managing a toddler and new baby When a new baby arrives in the family, it would be ideal if parents were given an extra pair of hands, a top up of patience and wisdom, a personal assistant and some “you time”. The next best solution is to consider some practical options to make this transition work to the optimum level.

Kids in the Christmas and school holidays are nearly here and the festive season is a great time to get the kids involved in cooking and interested in what they eat.
M
y number one tip for improving a child’s diet is
to get them involved in the kitchen wherein they can learn valuable skills. Children of all ages have a curiosity and enthusiasm for food and as parents we need to foster and encourage this. Exposure is the key, while giving kids tasks that are age and skill appropriate. Cooking entails creativity and kids have tonnes of it. My daughter loves making her own sandwiches and surprised me one day by asking me to grate some carrot and cheese to have in her honey sandwich. I quickly obliged! Not quite the flavour combination I would have chosen but she loved it. For me, I have learnt to switch off my ‘mess radar’. I know I could make a batch of fruit muffins in less time and with less mess, but letting my five year old crack the eggs, measure out and mix all the ingredients not only helps with her maths, comprehension and fine motor skills, but it is also an opportunity for me to help with her problem solving skills as some egg shell ends up in the batter.

a valuable science lesson that day! I have very fond memories of being a newly graduated dietitian and going to a local kindy class for a sandwich making activity. I prepared a range of fruits, vegetables, spreads and breads and the kids got to make their own sandwiches. The teacher was amazed at the variety the kids were choosing compared to their normal lunches – and the best bit – the kids proceeded to eat their lunches. Chocolate Cookies These are just a bit special for this time of year and super easy to make – a great activity to do with kids! I like that these cookies have whole oats, wholemeal flour and chia seeds. With less sugar in this whole recipe than a 600ml coke, don’t expect them to be super sweet – but that is the beauty of these cookies – they are tasty but not too sugary. The kids will love them! These are great to package up as gifts for friends, family or teachers. Makes 18 biscuits Ingredients: 75g whole oats (not the quick cook variety) 75g wholemeal plain flour 1 tablespoon chia seeds 35g cocoa powder ½ tsp bicarbonate soda 80g margarine 55g brown sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 egg 55g dark chocolate chips Method: 1. Preheat oven to 180C. Prepare 2 baking trays with baking paper. 2. In a bowl combine oats, flour, chia seeds, cocoa powder and bicarbonate soda. Set aside. 3. Using an electric mixer beat margarine and sugar together for a couple of minutes. Beat in vanilla then egg. Slowly add flour mixture. Then fold in chocolate. 4. Take a tablespoon of mixture and role into a ball using wet hands. Slightly flatten when you place on baking trays. 5. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and place on wire rack to cool.
