Make sure you’re getting the right wood heater for your home.
What do I need to know when buying a wood heater?
Five most common forms of installation. Once you have selected your wood heater it is just as important to ensure you have selected the right location within your home and that the heater is installed correctly. A qualified professional
should carry out installation as a number of serious problems can occur. The diagrams below show the five most common forms of installation. • Consider the position of your wood heater • After the wood heater’s position has been decided on, the flue system is then installed
What is the size of the area you need to heat? Is it open plan or small rooms connected by hall-ways?
• The flue system must be flashed (sealed) at the point where it exits the roof lining
What is the height of the room the wood heater will be in? Are your ceilings flat or at an angle? What type of floor coverings are in the room? What material is the roof made from? Tiled, metal, pitched, flat etc. Where will the heater be located? Internal or external wall, corner or flat against the wall or in an existing chimney. What materials are the walls made from? Do you have curtains nearby? What is the height of the gap in the roof space, are there any obstructions such as beams that may require an offset? What is the distance from the peak of the roof to the point where the flue will exit?
10
Are there power points located nearby for the fan? Is your home single or double storey?
Most common form of installation: Single Storey Installation

Common installation considerations. While most heaters are installed without issue there are always exceptions to the rule. The diagram on the right illustrates the most common issue; getting the flue height correct to avoid issues such as down drafts. All wood heater installations must meet the Australian Installation Standards. The minimum height for the wood heater installation is 4.6 metres from the bottom of the heater to the top of the flue. However, there are circumstances that require the flue to be extended.
If less than 3 metres: Flue is too low If less than 3 metres: Flue is too low
Discover our huge range of heating accessories.
Flue termination point 1Mt Min
• The flue needs to extend from the exit point of the roofline by a minimum of 1 metre
4.6Mts Minimum
• If the flue is within 3 metres of the roof’s peak then it needs to be extended beyond that point by a minimum of 1 metre
Window
• If the flue is within 3 metres of the neighbour’s roof then it needs to be extended beyond the highest point by a minimum of 1 metre By ensuring that these simple measures are taken you can enjoy the use of your wood heater without the hassle of down drafts or annoying your neighbours with smoke from the flue. Installation requirements are adhered to by professional installers and therefore to avoid any issues it is best to use a qualified installer.

*Inbuilt wood heaters are not zero clearance appliances, which means they must not be installed in timber stud walls or within an enclosure made of combustible materials. Inbuilt heaters can only be installed into an existing masonry fireplace or a full masonry enclosure. Installation specifications are a guide only and are subject to change. All inbuilt heaters must be installed in a full masonry cavity and to AS/NZS 2918:2001 specifications. In general - no combustible material should be closer than 600mm above the hot air outlet or 300mm from the sides of the outer side of the heater box. Refer to the appliance installation manual for all clearances and procedures prior to installation. Heating performance may reduce as a result of vaulted ceilings, drafts, large glassed areas or poor insulation. At Barbeques Galore we are continually striving to improve our range of heaters, accessories and spare parts. We reserve the right to change specifications without notice.
