Portfolio Architecture SalomĂŠ Baczynski
I am an architect graduated at the university of Liège (Belgium). I am passionate about architecture, its practice leads the architect to question, understand and analyze a situation, a request, needs and more widely the society. Then the architect attempts to provide a constructed answer that makes sense and creates emotion. The experience has shown me that I am a hardworking person, reliable and committed to deliver a very professional, passionate and creative work. I have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. I am also very curious and interested in what surrounds me. It explains why I love reading, going to the theater, travelling and play sports. Before establishing myself in Montreal, I travelled across Canada by bike. It was important to me to discover the country before living in it.

During my studies I discovered the many different fields that interact in the architecture practice. I decided to direct my master towards two main fields : the practice of adaptive reuse and the consideration of the ecological footprint in architecture. I think that now a day these two topics are inevitable and decisive. The architect has to deal and create with them everyday.

What a circus
Program This project is an adaptive reuse of the ancient Ougree’s city hall. The new program had to be defined by the student. Location Ougree is a post industrial city that suffers the aftermath of industrialisation (large abandoned industrial sites, city plan based on the industrial activity, etc.). The city hall of Ougree was abandoned a couple of years ago because of the significant evolution of the surroundings and its contradiction with them. Project’s main idea The first intervention on the context has been on a large scale. The idea is to create connections between Ougree and Seraing (neighboring city) by reusing and reinterpreting the industrial site. Thus new pedestrian relations are created under the former pipelines (an enduring landmark in this industrial landscape). The second intervention is to create a clear constructed breach between the city hall of Ougree and the highway. Therefore it is now possible to establish connections between the building and the site. Concerning the building itself, there is actually a demand to use it for a circus school. This programm needs different types of rooms : two main training rooms, two smaller ones and annexe rooms such as the cafeteria, the administration, the changing room, etc. The strategy is to place one of the main training room in the former public part of the building. This enables to preserve this representative part identically. The rest of the programm takes place in the other part of the building which is spatially more suitable for these rooms.

Let’s play a new act
Program This project is an adaptive reuse of a thermodynamic central and a thermoelectric laboratory. The new program had to be defined by the student. Location The site is a former university campus in the process of being converted. By now, only two buildings are still in use. There is the Royal Conservatory of Liege, which is a drama school and the FOREM, which is a school for continuing education. Project’s main idea Firstly, the project develops a complementary program for the two existing schools. In fact, both of them are seeking to expand. The idea is to develop new spaces for each school and to seize this oppurtunity to create interactions between the two. The first floor has a strong identity thanks to the massive concrete structures. This floor is in direct relation with the outside public space therefore all public spaces are located at this level. The visitor is welcomed in the main agora which is in relation with the restaurant and the school library. This agora leads, through a second agora situated on the second floor, to the main auditorium. In relation with this auditorium is : underneath (1st floor) the storage, the costume workshop (FOREM) and the artists foyer ; and beside it and directly in connection with it (2nd floor), is the classroom for the stage director formation (FOREM). Above the auditorium there is a technical grill in relation with the classroom for the stage manager course (FOREM). On the fourth floor is the secondary rehearsal room for drama arts. Finaly, on the last two floors are the artists housing. Strong relations are created between the two school programs.

Living room
Program A minimal accommodation for four refugees. The inhabitants do not know necessarily themselves. The accommodation is composed of two bedrooms, one bathroom, a common space and an outside space. Location The site is located on the corner of a city block. It is oriented northeast and is about 20 square meters. Project’s main idea Because the site is very small and north oriented, it is hard to get light on the two first floors. Therefore the idea was to place all the living rooms on the upper floor. It also enables the living rooms to enjoy the beautiful view of the city. Thereby, the two bedrooms and the water rooms are located on the first and the second floors. Each bedroom benefits of two different spatialities. The mezzanine of the second floor bedroom offers two distinct spaces to this room and enables the first floor bedroom to get more light. The accomodation is at the corner of a city block, therefore the facades connect on both sides with two existing houses. This also explains the general shape of the building.

Take a look inside
Program Each group of two students was given a specific service to provide and a spot in a shopping gallery. My group had to create a daycare for children between 6 and 12 years old. Location The site is located in the Gallerie pont d’Avroy in Liège. In this gallery there are eight alcoves to be refurbished, each of them is 5.50 meters high and has a surface of about 40 square meters. Project’s main idea For this project the biggest issue was the height under ceiling of the room. In fact, a 5.50 meters high room is impressive and quite uncomfortable for children. Therefore, the first idea was to create a floating module which would reduce the under ceiling height and that could be used as a playground for the children. The proposed module is a coarse cotton cocoon supported by steel columns. The columns are located based on the existing grid ceiling and respond to the atmospheres created on the ground floor (the reading corner, the large and the small play areas). The staircase is treated as a concrete block that encloses the washroom and appears to be the “mass” in this flying atmosphere.

Working as an architect at aa-ar atelier d’architecture was a really constructive and enriching experience. It took me a step further in the architectural practice. Being able to manage a project from it’s starting point to the end, working within a team and sharing ideas, managing several projects at the same time, managing a construction site, ... all of which were instructive. aa-ar atelier d’architecture is a studio that designs with a real sensibility and care for the users, the space created, the light, the context and the details. It manages projects from a very small scale (custom furniture) to a much bigger one (movie theater in the center of Bruxelles).

Cultural Center Joseph Prévers Program This project is a refurbishment and an extension of the cultural center Joseph Prévers. It is asked to add 100 seats in the main auditorium, to create a new modular rehearsal room and to improve the functionality of the other existing spaces (the artists’ foyer, the bar, ...) Location The building is located at the end of a city block constructed in the nineties.
Project’s main idea The idea is to create an extension that envelops three facades of the existing building - facades that were in “contradiction” with the surroundings. Therefore the new facade redefines a new relation with the surroundings, creates a new access to the cultural center and materialize new outdoor spaces. The intern spaces created between the existing building and the new curtain wall vary in shape and high and welcome the different parts of the program.

Rural house in Mont-Godinne Program The demand is to create a new village hall and the different side functions (storage, meeting room, bar, ...) Location The site is located in a rural area and is characterized by an important slope. Project’s main idea The new building fits into the natural slope of the site. All the service spaces are located into the slope whereas the main room opens itself towards the landscape.

Refurbishment of a town house Program The existing house is converted in an artist atelier and in a private apartment. Part of the atelier must be accessible to the public (painting classes in a “clos lieu” and exhibition space) and the other part is private (the artist’s own space). Location The house is located in the center of Liège in a street with others manor houses.
Project’s main idea The atelier is located on the ground and the first floors and the apartment on the two last stories. The atelier’s public part is located on the ground floor. The idea for this part was to create a modular “clos lieu” next to the garden and an exhibition space in relation with the street. Therefore when the “clos lieu” changes itself it becomes an additional exhibition space and opens the room towards the garden. The apartment has its own entrance that also gives access to the garden. The living spaces are on the top floor enjoying a rooftop patio.

Holiday cottage Program Creation of a new holiday cottage for about 8 persons with an indoor sauna. An important place is given to the kitchen because the owner would like to give cooking classes.
Project’s main idea The idea is to create two types of facades: two facades mostly blind (those facing the house and the road) and two mostly transparent (those facing the river and the wild). The intern spaces are oriented towards the view of the landscape.
Location The holiday cottage is located in the backyard of the client’s house.

Extension of a townhouse Program The family of this house needed a new bedroom, a new bathroom and an additional living room. Location On top of an existing house. Project’s main idea The project consists in adding a level that welcomes all the additional functions. This new level is constructed in wood with a flat roof. The cladding is in slates and the frames are in wood. A plain wood stair connects the new story with the existing ones. For this project I only followed the construction phase.
24
Refurbishment of the Pathé Palace Program The new program welcomes three small movie theater rooms (100 seats), a large one (400 seats), a restaurant and an exhibition room. Location The existing building is located in the heart of Bruxelles. It was formerly a theatre and part of it is now listed as a historical monument. Project’s main idea The biggest challenge in this project was to integrate all the constraints (fire regulations, person with reduced mobility accessibility, different existing levels to reconnected, budget, ...) and still be able to bring natural light in and to create space that generates emotions. A tricky game that makes sense at the end.
