Concept Development Having first visited the site, I experienced a debilitating attack of hayfever (allergic rhinitis: AR) which led me to research treatments of AR. This led to research the health benefits of salt, hydrotherapy and related therapies, forming the basis of my project & basis for experiments I conducted during my project.

/ Simple massing is the starting point of design onto the empty brownfield site.

/ Optimal functionality divides the mass: cafe & gallery towards busy road as active frontage, semi-private events space pushed back.

/ Further division from current and percieved future pedestrian and vehicular movement through the site.

/ Form is further compressed by protected key views to Listed buildings above on the Lace Market cliff.

/ Use of shipping containers inspired by the setting. However, research into the feasibility of use of containers suggests their unfeasibility. Instead, the structural grid of the steel frames used is based on container dimensions.

/ Simple massing is the starting point of design onto the empty brownfield site.
