HELLO

My name is Saloni. I'm a fifth-year architecture student with an eye for detail and the avidity to grow professionally. I like to be challenged and pushed in the directions that can fuel my zeal to learn. I'm a perpetual explorer searching for meaning and details even in the miniscule and especially likes to contribute to the field of cultural heritage and histories of places. In my four years of architectural education, I have indulged in various kinds of academic and non-academic projects that have exposed me to the myriad ways of working as a design aspirant. I believe in broadening my horizons to learn in the larger context of built enviornment and not restrict myself to building as the only form of architecture. This portfolio will take you through my journey as an agent of built enviornment with my contribution as, but not limited to, a budding designer, researcher, story teller, and an explorer. In my experience, I have been awarded 'Certificate of Leadership' twice in one year for involving in college and university-wide projects which involved organising events from planning to execution, working on the outreach committee of college and backend management with the authorities. Some of my best works have emerged through writing on social issues impacting the daily mundane of built environment and by being a heritage enthusiast aiming to conserve the richness of history, art and culture. I'm an ardent learner who is always ready to gain new skills and get challenged in my work and life to produce the best outcome.

01. Client Project : Ponnani Fishermen Housing Year : 2020 Designed the skin for a housing unit for the fishermen community in Ponnani, Kerala as part of architectural atelier titled "Skin and Texture" in 2nd year. It's a low-budget residential housing project designed for Ministry of Fisheries in Kerala. By working in groups of three, we followed point - path - product approach to deesign the facades and floor finishes with respect to the weather and climatic constraints. We delved into studying the sun paths, material finishes and vernacular elements to have a traditional and passive cooling design for the fishermen community. We used Ecotect software to study sun paths and completed the Energy Efficient Building Code (ECBC) compliance check that verified our design as energy efficient.

ECOTECT SUN PATH ANALYSIS

Project : Ponnani Fishermen Housing Year : 2020 We were given a unit plan and I, along with my team worked on the exterior facades with materials and finishes of exterior walls, floors, fenestrations including windows, ventilators and doors. I also did the costing and ECBC compliance check apart from the collective design strategies. We developed four types of walls according to the sunlight and heat analysis for a passive cooling design. 13

Project : Ponnani Fishermen Housing Year : 2020 The floors, walls, and roof systems are all based on the refered case studies on the vernacular architecture of the region and suitable interventions for hot and humid climate.

02. Project : Koti Villa, Almora Year : 2020 This project was an assignment about 'Housing in Extreme Climate' in groups of three. It was designed as part of our course Structural Systems III wherein we were supposed to choose a geographical location with extreme climatic conditions and design the structure of the house. We chose Almora in Uttrakhand, covered with snow-clad Himalayas in North India. The structure was inspired by vernacular Kumaoni architecture of the region. After several rounds of iterations and study on various structural systems suitable for the chosen climatic region, we used a monolithic steel truss roof system supported by rectangular columns standing on a foundation of concrete piers and a retaining wall for cut-and-fill method.

Project : Koti Villa, Almora Year : 2020 The design constrains were to design a 3-bedroom house in an area of 400 sqm. on a slope that can withstand natural disaster. The structure is inspired from the Koti-banal architecture seen in traditional Kumaoni houses.

03. Project : Studio RFLCTION Contract Year : 2020 This project was part of 'Professional Practices' course wherein we drafted a professional Designer-Client contract in a group of four. By naming our studio RFLCTION we made sure that our contract reflects the ideology behind the name which is to be completely considerate of the clients' needs while also being sustainably efficient. Our USP was to create sustainable energy efficient designs that also corroborate with contemporary designs. Our contract received the best contract of the seminar.

Our team here at RFLCTION is a close knit group of designers, architects and multi-disciplinary personnel. We firmly believe in energy and ecological conservation in the design of architectural spaces and have made strides in the sphere. For this project we believe that an amalgamation of nature and culture is the right design approach and our team is dedicated in working with you to create a space that will accomplish a sustainable design and meet the user requirements concomitantly. We will be taking care of the project from its design inception to its end which will include the preliminary design, ideas, construction documents, all the essential drawings, quantities and estimates, appoiting the contractor, etc. making your work easier and organised.

04. Project : JSAA Block Year : 2021 This project was part of our BIM (Building Information Modelling) seminar in third year which mainly focused on Revit software. By the end of the course we were individually assigned to redesign our college block within the university campus on Revit which was further rendered on Twinmotion. It was mainly aimed to gain software knowledge for BIM purposes.

Project : JSAA Studio Block Year : 2021 Softwares like AutoCAD, Revit and Twinmotion were used as a test of computational skills. The design constraints included a space to accomodate five batches of architecture students which is approximately 250 people with spaces like Fabrication studio, Digital lab, Classrooms, coworking studios and faculty lounge. The design mainly consists of red brick structures with efficient circulation to move around the site and encourage green spaces. The roof is partly covered with solar panels to sustain electricity considering the hot and humid climatic conditions of the city.

05. Project : Mnemonic Camps of Indian Partition Year : 2021 This is a paper that stemmed out of the course about refugee camps in the world focusing on the politics and representation of different spaces. This paper addressed the existing presence of Indian partition refugee camps through memories and nostaliga which has dictated the perspective of Indian population towards Pakistan by also bringing in Foucauldian theory of power and governmentality.

06. Project : Rajpur Road, Dehradun Year : 2021 This project was an urban level mapping of a city to observe and understand the shortcomings of urban plannings at our chosen site. As part of our urban atelier in fourth year, we chose 1km stretch of new Rajpur Road in the city of Dehradun, Uttrakhand. Walking the streets of Rajpur almost everyday and interacting with the locals, we were able to make city-level observations and the problems faced by the inhabitants, especially the pedestrians as a result of urban map of the city. We, therefore, drafted drawings on urban scale proposing various design interventions to solve the problems making it a pedestrian-friendly design.

Physical Mobility Practicum // Fall 2021

29

Client Project : Rajpur Road, Dehradun Year : 2021 There were mainly five problems identified after several site walks, researching and talking to the locals. The problems being: 1. Broken and encroached footpath 2. Lack of parking space 3. Dilapidated bus stop 4. Speeding and lack of traffic control 5. No pedestrian crossing

The analysis were presented through site sketches, audit forms and AutoCAD. For interventions, ROW (Right of Way) section was proposed along with mid-block and speed table crossing, and textured intersection design were introduced.

07. Project : JSAA Social Media and Outreach Year : 2020 - 21 Managed the social media and outreach of Jindal School of Art and Architecture for a year. Being a core team member, I was responsible for timely curating the posts and designing visuals of the page. Our team was able to gain more than 12k witihin a span of week and raised awareness about the different pedagogy of JSAA through our interactive content.

08. Project : Bulandshahr Legacy Year : 2021 Interned with Kala Chaupal Trust for their project on Bulandshahr's culture and heritage. I remotely led the project by single-handedly managing their social media and desiging WordPress website from scratch. I also wrote blogs and communicated with several scholars, government officials, locals, etc. as part of my research into Bulandshahr's
