providing multitudes of spaces in terms of scale, use and people within the scheme with a network of streets which end within the lush green undergrowth, provide a heirarchy or discipline.

The concept departed from a ‘Minion’ moving through different spaces within the 18-30 blocks Housing scheme. Views, sketches, different layouts, and models led to 3 typologies of housing units for its users. Making the user tiny in huge grand infrastructure, is brought in by

Housing is more than copy and mirrored units, and this housing has traditional elements like Jharokhas out of stone, and the amphitheatre, ramps, stairs and foyers of the units induces a feeling of LOST within the public arena, as well as silent bedrooms face the bank.

2. HASTHAKALA DHAM

The National Institute of Design and Crafts, Udaipur is an extension of Indian poetry of culture; reinterpretation of its essence to a modern artifact. It is an attempt to bring life to the dying imprints of the indegenious craft forms by amalgamating them with modern utlity.

order to create a spiritual journey to the training ‘ashram’ where the Guru- Shishya Parampara will emerge in modern times. The understanding leads to the concept of ‘interaction’ and inter-relationship, where student interaction spaces as well as secluded spaces are focussed.

The contoured site within the limits of Shilpgram has many trees, a rural onset with celebrated backdrop of culture, and traditional attire of its people, sparse vernacular house forms rising onto them out of yellow sandstone of Udaipur that speaks of its royalty. The drop of 5m provides a slope to work in split levels in

The program of 3 workshops, 4 kakshas, exhibition centre, several labs and library with admin for 100 students shall provide a common platform for exploration.

SITE AREA : 11,290 m2 UDAIPUR, RAJASTHAN GROUND COVER : 1857.55 m2 CARPET AREA : 1486 m2

The concept of Layering and Depth is abstracted and a parallel wall language of architecture is generated and followed throughout the Institute.

CONCEPTUAL

The concept development from the form to its translation involved many factors in consideration including the use of different spaces and the light required for the workshops. Individual student space for drafting, carving, modelling and painting the craft are provided, and the shaded spaces descend down along the contours with a number of courtyards for interaction. “SINGULAR

SITE DRAWING

The model of the majestic Haveli, at Jadabhagat ni Pol, Khadia, Ahmedabad, whose architecture was designed inside-out in the 1500’s is a very typical Indian Old-City vernacular housing typology. Parallel walls supported by post lintel system out of timber, with intricately carved brackets, and the overlooking balcony shading the Otlo and the washyard and the toilets forced outside the house are the very essence of the house. The narrow street view of the Pol with its activities, and the household chores were documented and the different use of spaces were studied (volumetric analysis). This typology had a courtyard of like 3m x 3m which served as a multi-purpose space.

5. the Brick institute ARAS PARAS STUDIO

The program of the ‘Brick’ residential institute at Mandu, besides the Caravan Sarai, runs as a 256m2 span of shaded studio to be covered with any load bearing system. The challenge was to support the roof on to the selected geometric shape with that same shape as the base of the 16 supports.

squinches. The smaller supports were 25 m2, with 950 mm interaction space acting a narrow street. Carving material out of the walls for 2 workshops, libraries, 3 toilets, a computer lab, 2 dance studios, some sleeping spaces, and a lots of sneak out spaces for like 100 students was the aim of the project.

Square is a balanced regular polygon that can be supported in many ways, here it is done by the means of Buttresses and

Wooden cantilevers projected out as balconies, provide a pleasant view of the valley facing the Queen’s Pavilion at Mandu.
