...I grew up knowing that hair was an important thing!
A former ‘Barber of the Year‘ as well as ‘Afro Barber of the Year‘ MICHAEL DAMIANO is a barbering force to be reckoned with. Michael is also a part of the WAHL Artistic Team. We caught up with Michael to learn more about his career journey into the field of professional BARBERING and male grooming.
What was your first memory of appreciating good hair? I grew up in a hair salon, both of my parents were hairdressers and owned their own hair salon - I was always around it! Because of this, I grew up knowing that hair was an important thing!
Who influences you to be a great barber and why? At the beginning of my journey, with my Dad influencing me, I wanted to make him proud bringing in something different to his shop – offering him another service in the business. When I moved into college, my tutor Paul Mills influenced me – I looked up to him and his knowledge of the art of barbering and I wanted to show him I could do it too. When I was younger, my dad also took me to Salon International, showing me the industry like I’ve never seen before.

I came across someone who showed me a new light of barbering - it was Mr Simon Shaw. I still remember watching him on that Wahl stage when I was young, inspiring me to get to a new level of barbering! How he was cutting and presenting and educating on stage. Wow. And so he became a huge inspiration in life and still is! Years later to be proudly a part of the Wahl team is a huge accomplishment, Simon has taught me so much and I’ll be forever grateful.
Have leading some of Wahl’s training courses changed the way you work? Most definitely! Simon taught me to turn myself into a presenter and educator. Educating is so fun!

How do you think social media has shaped the industry? The Good The good side is that it has given us the platform to show off our work, connect with other barbers and hairdressers and clients. We can promote what we can do and what we have achieved. Alan Beak for example is by far a huge industry leader and uses social media very well, he’s a inspiring leader.
The Bad I feel a lot of barbers and hairdressers are scared to promote their work because of other barbers and hairdressers show negative comments towards it, which is a huge shame. We are one big family sharing the same trade – we should show love and support for each other.
What was one thing you wish you were told before embarking on a barbering career? That it can be very tough! Barbering is a beautiful profession which I
wouldn’t change for the world! But it can come with a few sacrifices. To name a few – The back pains, the fatigue, knowing that you’re the last to be at the social gatherings or parties amongst your friends or not there at all because you’re the one making them look good! It can also be long hours so you will always be in demand.
What work has made you the proudest? Well, obviously the 3 times I have won barber of the year collections. And the India tour I did with Wahl, it was one of my first trips abroad!
What is the best advice you can give to stylists starting out? Love what you do – what you put in you will get out. Don’t wait until you come out of college to start to build a clientele list… start now!!! It all starts from the moment you say you want to be a barber or a hairdresser. Build a social media page on it, and get going from now! Oh and buy a WAHL CLIPPER!

JOTH DAVIES, master barber and founder of SAVILLS BARBERS, an iconic male grooming institution based in Sheffield. Here Joth tells us more about his career in BARBERING as well as his thoughts on the way the industry is moving. 6
I entered the barbering profession nearly 30 years ago. In 2006 I opened my first shop and then my second in 2009. In 2014 both shops were merged into one and Savills was born, resulting in an image and an ethos, which I had had in mind since being a trainee hairdresser back in 1988! I designed and project managed the refurbishment of a stunning new 10 station Barber Shop and then moved both shops into it. With Savills I am proud to be creating something that is unique. A one stop man shop, created from antique and vintage fixtures and fittings. I have hand picked every item in the shop from the barber chairs to pictures on the walls and every thing in-between. Every single item in the shop has a story attached to it, so as the business grows, the collection grows with it, creating memories with history.
What aspects do you believe make a salon successful outside of London? There are hundreds of successful salons and barbershops outside of London. Living in a major city should have nothing to do with how successful your business is, it’s all down to hard work, dedication and believing in what you do. I know of salons and barbershops that have tried and failed in London but have been a success in other cities. Do your research, know your town and your market, make goals and work hard to achieve them. Savills was not an overnight success – it’s been nearly 30 years in the making and we are still learning, changing and evolving every day. To answer your question, the only thing that makes a salon successful outside of London is you the business owner and the team you choose to surround yourself with.

What trends have you seen evolving within the barbering industry over the last decade?
How do you see men’s grooming evolving over the next decade or so?
How do you feel social media has changed the salon industry?
The classic haircut, the beard and the revival of the barbershop has definitely been the biggest trend in the last 5-6 years. At Savills Barbers we are probably most well known for the classic short back ‘n’ side haircuts e.g. The pompadour, the quiff, the 50’s jelly roll, basically any haircut that stands the test of time . If you go back to photos from the 1920s, 30s and 50s and also look at Hollywood icons like Frank Sinatra, Cary Grant, James Dean, Marlon Brando, etc, even now in 2017 they still look cool. Fashions come and go but the classics never die. This is why we love these haircuts.
The barber shop is back in a big way and here to stay. The more I travel, educating in different countries, the more I realise just how small the world is and how big barbering has become. When I started Savills Barbers in 2009, there were only two barbershops in the city centre. In the last two years alone nine barbers have opened their shops around us. I believe there is a statistic that in the UK more barbershops have opened in the last two years than coffee shops!
Social media has changed the dynamic of the industry in a massive way. The barbershops used to exist on returning clients from up to a 7 circa mile radius. Now people do not mind traveling far and wide to visit barbershops all over the country and even abroad. Barbers and barbershops are using social media to promote their work and gain huge followings. They can be seen working all over the world in different barbershops as guest barbers and also teaching in shops, exhibitions and seminars.
In my 30 year career I have seen hair fashions change a lot. I too have always moved with the changes - long hair, bleached hair, big 80s hair, even permed hair - but the classic cut has always remained a constant throughout my 30 years in the industry. I will just leave you with this to think about... take a look at those Hollywood icons from the 50s and see how cool they still look now, then look back at photos from 80s and 90s and see if you can say the same. The global male grooming industry is a multi billion pound industry. The UK alone estimates it’s worth in 2017 to over £700 million and global predictions for 2022 are to tip 166 billion dollars……. WOW!! So my predictions for the barbershop in the next few years is that it’s popularity will continue to rise.

Q&A... Tell us more about how Wahl became industry innovators in salon electrical equipment? The first electromagnetic clipper was invented by Leo J. Wahl in 1919. Since then, we have always ensured every product that leaves the Wahl factory meets the demands of barbers and hairdressers across the globe. We are never standing still, always improving every clipper, trimmer or blade and the parts that go with them.
How does the process work from idea inception to stylists using the products? Without getting too technical or specific, it’s really all about researching what the stylists want and how a product could improve the way they work. Our success has been built on delivering products that the stylist can trust to work for them, so our products can go through years of testing before being brought to market.
What has been the brand’s greatest success? Product? A campaign, perhaps? Look no further than our range of cordless and taper products. The Super Taper has been a major product in the UK for as long as I can remember, becoming the industry standard clipper. It’s effectively a brand on its own!
The Magic Clip Cordless it has become the go to tool for barbers when it comes to blending and fading. What are your best selling products, why do you think that is? All of our cordless range of clippers and trimmers are huge sellers. The stylists love the freedom of no wires. Top of the pile would have to be the Magic Clip Cordless (see page 55), much like the Super Taper, it has become the go to tool for barbers when it comes to blending and fading. The staggered teeth on the blade ensure a smooth cut with no visible lines.
