How Should You Plan Your Salon Business for 2021? There’s no denying that the year 2020 brought some serious challenges with it for the hair and beauty industry. However, while nobody is quite sure what this year holds, it perhaps won’t be quite as unexpected. So the question is – exactly how do you plan your salon business now?

Plan your marketing strategy Marketing is often one of those things that ends up getting pushed down the list of your priorities – especially when your profit is being squeezed. Why not make this year the year you finally make the plan? By planning your marketing strategy well in advance, you will be doing yourself a huge favour. It can be tempting to cut marketing out of your budget when times get tough, but it will be essential in getting as many people back through your door as possible. Set yourself up some time at the start of the year to really get a good understanding of what marketing you have done in previous years and how well it worked. This could be…

Set some goals for the year A new year is a great time to plan out some new goals. Thinking up numberbased targets are often what we first have in mind, as they give us something concrete to aim for. They also have the most noticeable benefit to your business.

If you want more clients, again, turn this goal into actions. Add new marketing tactics into your yearly plan or allocate more money towards advertising. However you want to do it, be sure to make it happen.

These goals could be things like…

Try not to set yourself too many goals, either. Focus on what you think is most important to your business without spreading yourself too thinly.

• Improve profit by X% • Get X% more new clients • Boost salon retail by X% However, don’t just be led by numbers. Consider non-financial goals as well that can have just as much benefit for both your business and your team. It might be things like… • Improve communication • Attend more training sessions • Give your salon a fresh new brand • Grow your social media presence Either way, once you have made a goal for the year, don’t just let it sit there. You now have to plan how you are going to make it happen. So for example, if you want to grow your social media, devote a certain amount of time each week to creating content. Have an aim for how many updates a week you are going to post and stick to it.

Make a financial plan A solid financial plan for the year ahead should be the absolute backbone of your salon business.

• Emails you’ve sent out • Offers you’ve promoted • Money you’ve spent on advertising • Social media engagement • Website visits Find out what has worked well and plan more of it. Look for areas that could be improved and make changes. Put together a calendar for the year ahead and highlight your key seasons and promotional opportunities. Have everything in place now so you can be sure nothing slips through the cracks when you get busier later in the year.

Share your vision

After the experiences of 2020, you might be rethinking the importance of savings. While investing back into your business might always have been a priority, having a rainy day fund might now feel like a very sensible option.

As a salon owner, you should have a clear vision for what you want your business to be. Once you have set out some goals and plans for the year ahead, share this with your team. Afterall, it is them who are going to help you achieve all of this.

This year, make a plan for both the best case scenario and the worst case scenario. You’ve now seen the effect lockdowns have on your business, so you now know what to expect if it happens again.

Have a think about where they will fit into this plan. Consider all of their personal development and growth ambitions, then how they can benefit the business.

But, don’t let this hold you back. If you’ve made it through the toughest of times, let that be proof of just how strong your business is.

For example, you could have a member of the team who is keen on developing their creative colour techniques, while one of your goals is to attract new clients. This could fit nicely into your yearly plan.

5 Things To Do With Your Salon Business While it is Closed It may have been a surreal experience closing your salon doors the day the first lockdown was announced, probably leaving you more than a little uncertain about what the future holds for your business. But, while your seats might be empty of clients, you can still do some work behind closed doors. Having some downtime does give you a new opportunity to make some improvements to your business. Take a look at some of our ideas for things to do when your salon business is closed...

1. Improve Your Website Running a salon is more than a full-time job, so things like website maintenance often fall to the back burner. Now your salon is clean and tidy, why not snap a few new pictures of the interiors to update your website with? Or ask a few clients if you can use their Instagram pictures from your salon to put into a gallery? Check all your branding is consistent, with the same logo across your website and social media. Think about any new pages you might want to add, perhaps some profiles for your team or information on the products you use – if you use any vegan products or eco-friendly supplies, be sure to shout about it! Make sure people can find out exactly what your salon is about, what you stand for and the great work you do. You could even start a blog in your downtime to give clients some advice on maintaining their treatments at home.

We are all now aware more than ever just how important it is to keep your salon clean and sanitary. When salons reopen, this is bound to be at the top of everyone’s agenda, so make sure you review your salon hygiene procedures now.

It’s not just your physical salon that could do with some tidying up every now and then. It is likely that after the new GDPR introductions a couple of years ago, your database was streamlined to include only clients who are happy to receive contact from you.

While you don’t have any clients coming and going, why not head down to your salon by yourself to make sure you have everything you need to maintain your most hygienic working practices.

During this downtime, why not explore any other salon management software you could use? There are a number of cloud-based scheduling and database tools out there, so consider how well yours is working for you and maybe try out a new demo. Perhaps consider the value booking apps could add to your salon or whether some software with a marketing suite could help you further, such as Phorest.

While you’re there, think of whether you need any signage to help remind staff of hygiene procedures, or maybe even put together a training session to make sure everyone has the most up-to-date knowledge on sanitising and disinfecting in the salon.

4. Re-Organise Your Supplies When the salon is busy, it’s only natural that mess follows! Why not use this time to give your salon a good clear out, getting everything tidy and in its place? Not only can you and your team return to a well-organised salon, but you might even find it therapeutic to give the place a bit of an overhaul. While you’re at it, you could also do a quick stock take to make sure you have everything you need for your salon to reopen. Could now be the time to look at introducing some new products to your salon – you’ve got plenty of time to try them out yourself first! Maybe you want to bring more eco-friendly products and vegan supplies to your business – now is a good time to research them and see if you can budget them this year.

You’ve got plenty of time to try some new things out without having to worry about appointments getting missed, so see what else is out there while you can.

5. Connect With Others in the Industry While we may be far apart from each other, communities are reaching out more than ever to show their support. Why not drop a message to any fellow hairdressers or salon owners out there to see how they are doing? You could even ask if they’d like to set up a WhatsApp group to add fellow salon businesses to where you can share advice and support. Naturally, a lot of the hair and beauty industry has also been turning to social media to keep in the loop. Remember, Facebook and Instagram aren’t just for reaching clients – you can also spread some positivity within the industry too, by offering your expertise to those who need it.
