| TRACKER | Grain Surfboard’s Nolan Rolls into Lightly Salted After some truck trouble while headed here on the GSP, Rollin’ Nolan arrived on May 30 & gave us all an awesome demo on how their beautiful natural wooden boards are made. Based in Maine, Grain strives for greener options for surfers using classic techniques, also offering Homegrown DIY kits something we and the LS Surf Mercado really dig. Gaysurfers.net Connects Queer Surfing Culture Gays, especially gay men, have traditionally not held much of a presence in the surfing world - closeted, largely due to a tilt towards homophobia within the sport. Enter gaysurfers.net, a rapidly growing new social site out of Australia, aiming to connect others that share the same passion, face similar issues & provide more solidarity among GLBT surfers worldwide. About time! New Original Pintail Longboards by Jay Alders Our good bro Jay just collaborated on a sweet new line of surf art boards for Original Skateboards, out in surf shops any day. Speaking of bros, Jay’s bud Donavon Frankenreiter returns to perform @ the Pony on 7.14. Last year was epic & this promises more of the same, w/ a solo show by Jay @ Langosta Lounge planned & hopefully another surf sesh w/ Donavon! (((RADAR ) )) Filmmaker/Photographer/Journalist & Musician ANDREW KIDMAN [Last Hope, Ether, Litmus]. His latest film project, yet untitled, is now in the editing phase and getting the “Kidman” finishing touch.
SCOTT SZEGESKI
“adoration of the board” Back in March, Lightly Salted Surf Mercado’s Scott Szegeski was invited to come into the fold and work in the Byron Bay area of Australia with surf visionary Andrew Kidman on his latest film project. “As an artist & surfer, I couldn’t pass it up” says Scott. He spent 4 days working & surfing with Andrew, taken in by “how a person & family have shaped their lives around waves, foam & fiberglass” in pursuit of something special. “I traveled there to basically see the world Andrew lives in fascinated with his movies & the man himself”. Scott says “he has a great eye - the shots he took look wonderful. But it is a very far second to what I explored & experienced as an artist”.
Szegeski’s unique surf art concept is derived from the Japanese gyotaku, a mid 19th century form of direct nature printing used by fisherman to record their catches. “What I do is take the same paper & traditional ink and print “fish” surfboards, fins and tails. It’s a play on the word “fish” and what I do is change the subject to fit the surfing world...my world.” His printing work with Andrew Kidman “documented” the film’s main subject - 19 boards - giving a sort of fingerprint of each board for shapers.
