Salt and Light: Instrument and Agent of the New Pentecost

P

entecost is considered to be the birth of the Church and the feast signals the start of the universal mission of the Church – overcoming human obstacles with the Spirit as its driving force. Let’s consider three lenses through which we might consider this great feast: 1) the wideangle lens that looks at our belonging to the Church, 2) a medium lens that focuses on the ideologies at work in the Church today, and 3) a zoom lens to sharpen our hope, the great manifestation of the Holy Spirit to the Church. Over the past 14 years, I have had to learn about broadcast technology, and all that goes into making a good film and a good story. One important aspect of television is the intricate camera work “behind the scenes.” The close up and wide-angle camera shots make all the difference in filming and telling a story. If we use too many close-ups, we lose sight of the bigger picture. If we overuse the wide-angle lens without attention to the particulars, it doesn’t make for good television. Good television combines the wide-angle shots, intermediate views of the surface, and finally close-ups that offer attention to detail and often provide necessary depth for understanding the whole picture. At Pentecost we take a wide-angle view of the Church. This feast is the birth of the Church. Pentecost invites us once again to walk with the Church, breathe with the Church, hope with the Church, feel with the Church, “sentire cum ecclesia.” What does the 4 SALTANDLIGHT 2017

We must be icons of hope, a network of hope, a people with a new vision, a people that learn to see the world through the lenses of Christ, the Spirit, and the Church. When we sell ourselves to cynicism and despair, meanness of heart, smallness of spirit and harshness in ecclesial discourse, we betray our deepest identity as bearers of joy, hope and truth.

Church mean for me as an individual? What is my personal relationship with the Church? Do I love the Church? Do I feel loved by the Church? From the wide-angle view of the Church, let us take a closer look at our current ecclesial reality. Today, some of us seem to be stuck in the ideological battles that followed the Second Vatican Council. Perhaps we are frozen in categories of left and right; traditional vs. avant-garde; male vs. female; hierarchical vs. lay-led, or prophetic vs. static. Our inter-ecclesial fixations and polarizations on all sides of the ecclesial spectrum can distract us from addressing with requisite depth and discernment the issues facing us today. For in the world of sound bites, hope usually means that we make ourselves believe that everything is going to turn out all right. We use the word hope lightly and cheaply. This is not the hope of Christians. We must be icons of hope, a network of hope, a people with a new vision, a people that learns to see the world through the lenses of Christ, the Spirit, and the Church. When we sell ourselves to cynicism and despair, meanness of heart, smallness of spirit and harshness in ecclesial discourse, we betray our deepest identity as bearers of joy, hope, and truth. Is joy present in our Christian witness? What prevents us from giving a robust, joyful witness to Jesus Christ, the Catholic Faith and the Church? The fire of Pentecost invites us to rediscover the depth, beauty and vastness of the Church’s mission. On this birthday of the Church, let us ponder anew the whole reality of the Church, from the wide-angle view of its vastness and beauty, to the sometimes turbulent and complex surface, zooming in finally on hope and joy: the deepest manifestations of the Spirit alive in the Church. In doing so, we can marvel once again at the mercy and generosity of God and give thanks to the Lord who continues to call us to fidelity and joy. So much in the Church has changed since the night of March 13, 2013, when Pope Francis appeared on the loggia of St. Peter's Basilica. Many have said that the newly elected Bishop of Rome who came from “the ends of the earth,” gave renewed meaning to the new Pentecost of which St. John XXIII spoke so beautifully when he convened the Second Vatican Council in 1959.

Through your continued encouragement and financial assistance, you allow us to fulfill the mission of Salt and Light: to bring the flavor of the Gospel and the light of Christ to the world around us. From our new broadcast centre in Toronto, made possible through the donations of so many people, and most especially from the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus, the Garfield Weston Foundation, the Diocese of Hamilton and many religious congregations of women and men across Canada, our efforts at being instruments and agents of the new Pentecost will continue for many years to come! A New

Home Salt Light

4

After a four-year search and a major campaign to raise funds for a new facility, Salt and Light Television moved from its previous home on Richmond Street in downtown Toronto to a building at the corner of Davisville Avenue and Mount Pleasant Road in uptown Toronto during the second week of December, 2016. It was a massive, carefully planned move, but not the first for Salt and Light. Our new broadcast facility is actually our fourth home! When we started in 2003, our network was operating for several months out of a very small room in one of the properties of St. Joseph Media in Concord, Ontario. From there we moved into the 2002 World Youth Day offices on Yonge Street in February, 2003. We remained in the WYD offices until August 2004, when we moved into an old candy factory and warehouse on Richmond Street. What was to be a temporary period of a few years lasted over 12 years! ocated in the Diocese of London, St. Peter’s Seminary serves the Church across Canada through its respected program of priestly formation with a 105-year tradition. The Seminary also offers formation programs for the permanent diaconate and lay ecclesial ministry, and degree programs toward the Master of Divinity and Master of Theological Studies. An investment of $35 million will modernize living and learning spaces, restore the building’s notable exterior, and build endowment. The Rekindling the Gift Capital Campaign will raise the final $6.5 million that will be needed. The actual work is well underway. The final product will be more welcoming and supportive of the growing number of formation candidates; provide modern classrooms for 21st century learning; and allow for more efficient, environmentally responsible operations—all while preserving an irreplaceable piece of Canada’s Catholic heritage.

Very Reverend George T. Smith, CSB, Superior General of the Basilian Fathers Mass at Salt and Light Holy Cross Chapel with the General Council of the Congregation of St. Basil and Salt and Light Staff in Toronto. March 23, 2017

“Every kingdom divided against itself becomes a desert, and house falls on house.” Luke 11:17 One of the realities of life in the first part of this twenty-first century is the prevalence of polarisation. This disunity exists at so many levels, in our national politics, perhaps most dramatically, but also in terms of disparity of wealth in the world—between the developed and the developing world; it exists between the great religions, between Muslims and Christians most profoundly, but even within Christianity we are aware of divisions. Even within our own Church there are those who seem to resemble the stiff-necked Israelites who rejected the Prophets of the LORD, as Jeremiah describes them in our first reading. In light of these divisions, Jesus’ teaching in our gospel today takes on ominous meaning. To counter these divisions, we need to look to people and organizations that promote unity to give us hope. In my mind, one of the most important charisms of Salt and Light has become its ministry of unity. It is, of course, an apostolate of the new evangelization, and we must not lose sight of that important thrust even

Another source of that unity is the living tradition of Vatican II which permeates virtually all of your programming, and through which you have done so much to create a new thirst, especially among the young, for a truly Conciliar ecclesiology...

though it was the thrust more of the pontificates of St John Paul and Benedict rather than that of Pope Francis. But rekindling the flame of faith among the faithful for whom it has dimmed, and bringing the flame of faith to those who have just experienced the merest spark, remains one of the most important elements of the Salt and Light apostolate. That is the heart of the new evangelization. It is also, in the most fundamental way, an apostolate of education and evangelization, and it thereby deserves and has earned in so many magnificent ways the respect and admiration of the Basilian Fathers who, committed to education and evangelization as we are, marvel at the ways in which our more traditional instruments of education and evangelization burst into a new horizon by the medium of television coverage, programs and documentaries. But as I say, in the context of our Gospel today, it is this ministry of unity that has been so important in my ever-deepening appreciation for the mission of Salt and Light. This unity finds its strength in a number of sources: first, I would say by the scriptural foundation that is at the heart of your ministry. 2017 SALTANDLIGHT 13

THE VISITS

We know that Fr. Thomas Rosica’s passion for the sacred scriptures has been transmitted to every aspect of your ministry. Another source of that unity is the living tradition of the Second Vatican Council which permeates virtually all of your programming, and through which you have done so much to create a new thirst, especially among the young, for a truly Conciliar ecclesiology. Yet another source of unity, which has been a feature of Salt and Light from the beginning, is the lives of holy men and women, both living and dead, and an extraordinary conviction shared, it seems by all of you, that even though you and I may struggle with our weaknesses and sinfulness, authentic holiness is within our reach, we are called by God to be saints, and the greatest inspiration to live holy lives is the witness of holy men and woman who have either gone before us, or who live in our midst. The last source of unity which seems so clearly to me to be at the heart of your apostolate, is the unifying force, and it is the force of Pope Francis. Of course, that is a primary function of the Petrine ministry, but it seems to come alive in the programming of Salt and Light in ways that we know Pope Francis himself treasures. We all cherish the picture of Pope Francis sitting before the computer screen, surrounded and encouraged by the smiles of Salt and Light staff. The smile on Pope Francis’ face reveals a shared joy which is beautifully authentic. Nor should I forget the important contribution that your commitment to multilingualism makes to the unity in the Church which you do so much to bring about. Sacred scripture, the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, the lives of Holy men and women, Pope Francis, multilingualism, these are the building blocks for unity in our Church—the Church in Canada and the Universal Church, and we know of no apostolate that does more to foster this unity than Salt and Light. For this, we Basilians, give thanks to God. 14 SALTANDLIGHT 2017

CANADA 150 St. Joseph

CANADA S PATRON

Saint A HIDDEN LEGACY

Emilie Callan

CANADA IS CELEBRATING its 150 year anniversary but as we continue to celebrate, what are we remembering? Pope Francis says, “The lack of historical memory is a serious shortcoming in our society. A mentality that can only say, ‘Then was then, now is now’, is ultimately immature. Knowing and judging past events is the only way to build a meaningful future. Memory is necessary for growth” (Amoris Laetitia, 193). As a Canadian Catholic organization, founded within these 150 years, we remember the joyous occasion of becoming Canada’s first and only Catholic television network in 2003, established “on the wings of World Youth Day” in Toronto. We received the blessing of Pope John Paul II himself. We also stand on the shoulders of a Canadian giant, Gaetano Gagliano, the founder of one of Canada’s biggest media companies, St. Joseph Communications, named after the Patron Saint of Canada. What does all this have to do with Canada’s sesquicentennial? At Salt + Light, it all comes full circle. At the heart of our office is a chapel dedicated to the memory of Gaetano and his wife Giuseppina. In that very chapel stands a statue of St. Joseph, a gift from Gaetano, who was not only a hardworking and dedicated businessman but also a loving husband and 16 SALTANDLIGHT 2017

Brave Joseph,

collaborator in God’s project for humanity, your tenderness enfolds the newborn Church. Just as Mary and Jesus recognize in you the protection of the Father, so too does the community of faith place itself under your protection. Strengthen us with the Spirit that filled the Nazarene home and guide our footsteps on the road to the Kingdom. Accompany us in carrying out our mission. Help us to be lights in the world so that the family of God may spring forth from humanity transfigured in Christ. Grant us the strength to imitate God’s preference for the poor and weak. Guide us in our pastoral activities that our actions may be modeled on the Good News. Amen. Source: Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Roya l

father. A man of vision, he was committed to finding ways of communicating his faith effectively. By remembering Gaetano, we remember what he stood for: the desire to transmit the Catholic faith, strong family values, concern for people in need, and hope for the future. A lot can be attributed to the principles that were a part of Gaetano’s life, but perhaps we could also find these things take root in his strong devotion to Saint Joseph. St. Joseph, as Patron Saint of Canada, was known as the protector of Jesus and Mary, the Holy Family. He is also known as a God-fearing, hardworking man, and a faithful husband and father. When in 1984, John Paul II visited St. Joseph’s Oratory, he concluded his address to religious men and women saying, “Here in this Oratory, where so many graces have been granted, we pray for the intercession of a servant in intimate and continuous contact with the Son of God. Above all else, we are servants of the Son of God.” That Oratory, now the largest sanctuary in the world honouring Jesus’ earthly father, was built thanks to the inspiration and prayer of St. Brother André Bessette. His lifelong devotion to the carpenter could be summed up in what he once said about the miracles and healings happening through his intercession: “I am nothing…only a tool in the hands of providence, a lowly instrument at the service of St. Joseph”. Popular devotion to Saint Joseph grew as a result and it’s no surprise men and women like Gaetano have entrusted their work and their families to him. But if we find Saint Joseph at the heart of Catholic piety in Canada, we must remember it all started when the first missionaries established themselves in New France. In 1624, Fr. Joseph Le Caron, a Franciscan Recollect, was among the first to arrive. The first thing he did was entrust New France to St. Joseph. In a letter he sent to his superiors in France he said, “We held a great feast in honour of St. Joseph where all the inhabitants were included. The feast was held as a vow we made to St. Joseph, choosing him as patron of New France.” That feast was held on March 19. The devotion to the human father of Jesus

and husband of Mary was still a fairly new one. It only became a mandatory feast day three years before the Recollects celebrated that Mass in Huron territory on the island of Montreal. The missionaries hoped for only one thing: to make Jesus known to everyone and to make the Catholic faith accessible to all. As we continue to stand on the shoulders of St. Joseph, forever a special figure to Canada, Salt + Light also takes up John Paul II’s call to become “servants of the Son of God,” to be guardians of our Catholic faith and make it accessible to as many people as possible.

2017 SALTANDLIGHT 23

Now, more than ever, the role of women in the Church is a vital and hotly contested topic. From the halls of the apostolic hierarchy to small town church halls where lay movements meet, women are taking on ever greater responsibility, helping to guide the Church through the third millennium. Christ ensured that women were an essential part of the Faith from the beginning. A Woman's Place looks at the lives and ideas of 12 women who are working to shape the Faith's future. From the mayoral office in Bethlehem, to aiding refugees on the ground in Greece; from covering papal interviews 39,000 feet in the air, to mothers raising families in the missionary outposts of Northern Canada, we shine a light on some extraordinary work being done by truly inspiring women. Guided by the Holy Spirit and utilizing what Pope St. John Paul II calls their “feminine genius, these women are changing the world for the better and improving the lives of the people of God. A woman's place is in the home. A woman's place is in the world. A woman's place is in the Church. A Woman's Place is coming soon to Salt + Light Television.

Day in and day out, in every country, religious sisters provide an enormous service to the Church, giving life to the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Without their prayer, their wisdom or their charity, the Church could scarcely begin to achieve its mission. Yet, the number of sisters in North America and in other countries is dwindling, and at a time when the world desperately needs their charisms. Sisterhood is a special, 7-part series which gives viewers an exclusive look into the daily lives of these remarkable women betrothed to Christ. Vietnam, Philippines, Timor-Leste, Tanzania, Nigeria, Kenya and Uganda are just some of the countries where we visit with sisters who toil tirelessly in the vineyard of the Lord. Educators, health professionals, prayer warriors, catechists, counsellors, ministers to the poor — Sisterhood brings to light the myriad ways in which these wonderful women of the Gospel shine a light on the dark parts of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden, and neither can the infectious love of these sisters who bring hope and zeal to every soul they touch. Watch and be inspired by Sisterhood. Premiering on Salt and Light TV: Pentecost Sunday June 4, 2017 - 8 pm ET.

Perspectives Understanding what's happening in the world is how we broaden our knowledge and improve our ability to communicate with people. This is why it is so important for us to be attentive to the kinds of news and stories we consume. The very nature of our Christianity tasks us with compassionately defending the faith and joyfully evangelizing the world. It is my job to sort through all the stories and provide you a quick summary with a Catholic perspective. Perspectives Daily airs from Monday through Thursday at 7pm EST. Noel Ocol, Producer

Our flagship WITNESS series showcases men & women who are making a difference in both big and small ways. Fr. Thomas Rosica, CSB, hosts this weekly series of in-depth interviews with distinguished, religious and civic leaders who are contributing significantly to the vibrancy of their Catholic communities, the Church, and the world.

WITNESS

In its 13th season, WITNESS has aired over 300 episodes in English, French, Italian, Spanish, and occasionally in other languages since 2004. WITNESS airs every Sunday at 7:00 pm ET.

VATICAN CONNECTIONS is a weekly program that takes you behind the walls of one of the oldest institutions in the world. Stay informed on the latest stories coming from the Vatican. The program was first introduced to our audiences in English. It is now being produced in French, Italian, and Chinese with our hosts Emilie Callan, Charles Le Bourgeois, Matteo Ciofi and Rodney Leung. Take an in-depth look at apostolic voyages, diplomatic relations of the Holy See, Papal Audiences, new Vatican offices, appointments and resignations, decrees, press releases, liturgies, and all forms of information related to the activity of the Pope and of the Roman Curia. Each episode is made possible through our partnerships with Centro Televisivo Vaticano and Catholic News Service.

Pagine

Watch every week on Salt + Light English: Fridays - 8:00 pm ET French: Tuesdays - 7:35 pm ET Chinese: Tuesdays - 6:00 pm ET Italian: Fridays - 4:30 pm ET

Each language has its own brand. “Pagine Vaticane” allows viewers to hear the Pope’s messages in his original voice and listen to special interviews with those living and working in the heart of Vatican City. "梵蒂岡連線" (Vatican Connections in Chinese) has the unique mission of sending out the Pope’s messages to all the Chinese Catholics around the world, but especially to those living in China. The program provides a bridge between the Church and Chinese Catholics, and supports the communities who desire to learn about and adhere to Church teaching. Vatican Connections is brought to you by young and dynamic voices who have a passion for making Church affairs comprehensible and accessible to as many people as possible.

S+L INSIDER SPOTLIGHT

DON GOUDY New Director of Marketing & Communications What attracted you to Salt + Light? I was introduced to the management of Salt + Light as a potential consultant for the launch of the new HD service, one aspect of marketing consulting I had been doing for other companies. At the time when we were finalizing project details, S+L asked if I would like to take on a permanent senior marketing role. I had seen first-hand S+L’s new studios, an internal drive to grow, and a clear, well defined mission. Now, all the pieces are in place and support has never been greater from across Canada and around the world. It is also a very unique Canadian broadcaster who has a massive international reach across all platforms, which is a necessary ingredient for sustainable growth. How do you think a single faith network can compete in the crowded multi-platform media space? There is one thing that makes Salt + Light so important for Catholics and non-Catholics alike: the “brand” of Pope Francis. The pope has attracted unprecedented praise (Watch The Francis Effect on S+L!) from Catholic

and the secular media for his genuine, unrelenting focus on dialogue and mercy. Being genuine and consistent is a key success factor to any brand’s success and when we produce content aligned to, and influenced by, Pope Francis’ message, I believe we can expect a very positive response. What is one thing you want potential readers and viewers to know about Salt + Light? I would like them to know that Salt + Light TV represents what is truly best about being Catholic in terms of being helpful, charitable, balanced and encouraging dialogue in personal relationships and in the media. And of course, I would like them to know that their support drives future improvements in these key areas of our mission as a Catholic media foundation.

Jesus comes to save us; we are called to choose his way: the way of service, of giving, of forgetfulness of ourselves.

God’s mercy is forever; it never ends, it never runs out, it never gives up when faced with closed doors, and it never tires.

It is good for us to break out of our set ways, because it is proper to the Heart of God to overflow with tenderness, with ever more to give.
