Micro VGTV The Micro VGTV, or Variable Geometry Tracked Vehicle, is a unique system for remote inspection or observation applications. As the name implies, the vehicle’s shape can be altered during operation. The tracks, in their lowered configuration, take the shape of a tank. When the geometry is varied to the point where the vehicle is in its raised configuration, the tracks take the shape of a triangle. The Micro VGTV remains fully operational throughout these shape alterations and as a result, can continue to travel and maneuver while its configuration is being changed. This unique feature allows the vehicle to negotiate obstacles and operate in confined spaces and over rough terrain. The vehicle operates via a small diameter, lightweight, 100ft tether cable with a 300ft tether available as an option. The complete system is easily transported and managed by a single operator. The vehicle is controlled using a hand-held control unit incorporating a joystick for speed and direction, and separate controls for the raise/lower, camera tilt, light and focus functions. A new operator can learn to operate the vehicle effectively in a matter of minutes. The Micro VGTV can be upgraded to the VGTV Xtreme, with scaled up weight and power to serve a wide variety of applications and negotiate larger obstacles. Systems can be built to incorporate a variety of sensors or devices required for specific applications. The standard vehicle is available with a color or black and white camera. The Micro VGTV is a compact, remotely powered and controlled inspection system. It was used in search and recovery work at the World Trade Center collapse in New York City. Tether length can be tailored to any length up to 300ft. Dual laser lines set 2.6″ / 6.6cm apart allow the operator to make rough size measurements of objects with the camera’s view, independent of its zoom setting. Standard lead acid or lightweight (4lbs) Li-ion batteries allow the operator to carry enough power to operate for roughly 2 hours. Vehicle raise position, tilt head position, and vehicle pitch can be measured and displayed for the operator. A Micro VGTV may be converted into a VGTV Xtreme via a track belt and high-torque motor upgrade.

Upgrade to The VGTV Xtreme! The VGTV set a new standard for small mobile robots at its introduction, and it just keeps getting better. The VGTV Xtreme upgrade offers tank-like tracks, high-torque motors, and longer tether lengths give the VGTV Xtreme a reach unequaled by other remote recon tools. The VGTV Xtreme has the capability to carry virtually any miniaturized sensor package. Previouslyintegrated equipment includes radiation, air quality, and thermal monitoring sensors. Additionally, factorycalibrated lasers can be installed to provide precise visual size estimation. The controller system can be configured according to mission profile. Power options include residential AC, or custom battery solutions. Systems can be configured for backpack deployment or semipermanent, rack-mount use. Video and audio can be externally recorded. Depth rated to 100 feet, the VGTV Xtreme can operate in mud and under water, and can be quickly decontaminated with a simple water hose. All of these features are packed into one of the industry’s smallest crawler units. The applications for this tool are virtually endless. VGTV Xtremes have been used by structural engineers for inspecting structure failures. Maintenance teams have used it to crawl through air conditioning ducts. Utility providers have used it to climb into industrial machinery and pipelines. Urban search and rescue teams have used the system to crawl deep into rubble, looking for survivors.
