TOOLS

In this book, only standard felt is used. The more colors you obtain, the more creative you can be with your food. So get a wide-range assortment of felt and start having fun!

These bare essentials will help ensure you have a productive and exciting felt food experience: 1

Needle and Thread · Felt allows for much easier stitching, so a bigger needle can be used. Also, have many assorted color threads on hand. The closer it matches the felt the better.

2

Scissors · Generally you want to be using fabric scissors due to their crisper blades; felt can be tough to cut.

3

FabRIc Glue · A special adhesive for gluing cloth together. It dries fast and easy on felt, but too much will make hard spots.

4

A Thin Object · This is used to help stuff fabric in hard to reach places. Chopsticks and pencils work best.

STUFFING Most craft stores will carry bags of white stuffing. Stuffing is necessary to bring your food to life and give it shape.

BASICS OF HAND STITCHING

RUNNING STITCH (RS)

STRAIGHT STITCH (SS)

The running stitch is characterized by pushing down through the top then up through the bottom in an evenly distributed line. It is used for details, and in most instances, to hold pieces together.

Unlike the running stitch, this contains one, “straight” stitch. For this stitch you enter from the top layer, and span the intended distance and come back through. You then double back through the first entry point and around again to the exit point on the bottom. This provides a single decorative strand and will also help pull together and shape pieces that have been stuffed.

OVERCAST STITCH (OS) The overcast stitch is basically a running stitch around the outside edge. You enter through the top and when it’s through you pull it over the edge and back down through the top. This edging stitch carries evenly down the side of the fabric.

WHIPSTITCH (WS) A whipstitch works a lot like the overcast in that it connects to edges together. The whipstitch, instead of edging two overlapping pieces it is used to connect two facing pieces.
