FALL 2011
FROM THE PRESIDENT
“After 23 years as president I can say that I could never have found a position so rewarding – or one that I loved more. It has been my honor to work with you and to share your careers and lives.” Every year at the start of the fall semester there is an air of excitement on campus, as new students arrive and begin to get acclimated. It is gratifying to see their excitement become focused after the first few days, as the education of these future optometrists, audiologists and physician assistants begins. It has been a busy seven months since the last alumni magazine. In May, we welcomed PCO alumni to the campus for Reunion 2011 and conferred degrees on graduates in our optometry, audiology and low vision education and rehabilitation programs at commencement. In June, we opened the newly renovated patient areas at The Eye Institute and welcomed our College of Education and Rehabilitation students for their on-campus education. Over the summer, we unveiled a Doctor of Optometry Scholars Program, hosted 14 Summer Enrichment program students, welcomed new faculty, wished departing faculty well, and prepared to welcome our full enrollment of incoming optometry, audiology and physician assistant students for orientation week and their white coat ceremony. September saw our Physician Assistant commencement and a visit from the new president of the American Optometric Association. In short, it was business as usual.
Thomas L. Lewis, OD ’70, PhD President
The patient areas of The Eye Institute (TEI) were opened in late May. Completion of the upper level administrative space is anticipated in November, with exterior finishing touches completed by spring. Given the critical importance of TEI to clinical education at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, a successful renovation and capital campaign are crucial to the success of our optometry program. By now you most likely have heard that I will step down as president effective June 30, 2012. My 45 year association with this institution began when I entered PCO as a student in 1966. After 23 years as president I can say that I could never have found a position so rewarding – or one that I loved more. It has been my honor to work with you and to share your careers and lives. I will begin a one year sabbatical leave on July 1, 2012. In the meantime, as all of us continue to work together for the good of our students, our programs and our university, it remains business as usual.
Thomas L. Lewis, OD ’70, PhD President

The “New” Eye Institute
Whether first time or returning, patients who walk into the open architecture of The Eye Institute’s (TEI) modern lobby have described the space as inviting and beautiful. The Eye Institute’s $11 million renovation project began at 1200 West Godfrey Avenue in April 2010. The project has transformed the 30-year-old building into a modern, efficient clinical facility that will support the clinical education of future generations of optometrists. Phase I of the renovation project included a completely redesigned and renovated 15,000 square foot build out of the original lower level. There is now a single entrance into TEI and all clinical services now are delivered on the lower level. The completion of Phase I saw patient care begin in the new clinical space on May 31, 2011. The goals of the project included a comfortable and welcoming patient environment, an update of TEI’s technology, the creation of an efficient clinical space that supports patient privacy, expansion of the optical space, and preparation of The Eye Institute’s practice for the implementation of electronic health records. An open, airy lobby with a centralized check-in area for all adult primary care is located just beyond the facility’s main entrance on the newly expanded clinical level. When entering the warm, inviting atmosphere of the main lobby, patients
2
first are greeted by a member of The Eye Institute’s management staff. After that, an integrated waiting area and consolidated check-in process combine to drastically improve patient care functionality at TEI. Registration is more streamlined and operational protocols have been revised since patient care began in the new space. According to associate director of Patient Care Services, Thomas Falkowski, the arrival and registration process for patients is a “much smoother and more pleasant experience.” Longtime and loyal patients at The Eye Institute have provided positive feedback on the new comfortable and open waiting area, beautiful optical space, courteous staff and the efficiency of service. Although the design of the new clinical facility includes fewer exam rooms, the practice has been able to maintain the number of patients seen. The design of the new clinical floor also includes a separate, segregated check-in area for specialty care patients as well as the pediatric population. The specialty care service includes all specialty ophthalmologic consultative services, specialty testing, vision rehabilitation, and specialty contact lens service. The pediatric suite has its own patient check-in with a distinctive waiting area that is “eye-popping.” During the final weeks of construction, a local artist created a whimsical mural with a vision theme on the walls of the waiting room. The mural has proven to be a wonderful distraction for children waiting for care.

FALL 2011
The project has transformed the 30-year-old building into a modern, efficient clinical facility that will support the clinical education of future generations of optometrists. An additional design feature that has distinctively improved the educational mission of The Eye Institute is the creation of a “team room” in each of the clinical suites (three primary care suites, one specialty suite, and one pediatric suite). The team room is designed as an area in each suite for faculty and interns to congregate for the purpose of clinical consultation. Team rooms include a work station for each assigned clinical faculty, a conference table, and computers to support the faculty and students, effectively creating an environment for consultation, education, and mentoring. Just as the renovation of The Eye Institute is an investment in maintaining the large and mature clinical practice that has been there for more than 30 years, TEI continues to seek additional patients in other locations to support its educational mission. Over the last several years, The Eye Institute has established two smaller satellite practices in close-knit communities within Philadelphia, Mt. Airy and East Falls. To expand TEI’s clinical network, there is currently an active process underway to identify an appropriate suburban location for a third clinical satellite. Phase II of The Eye Institute’s construction project includes the renovation of the upper level of the facility. Located on the upper level are administrative departments (billing, appointment center, and facility administration), faculty and residents’ offices, meeting and educational spaces, and an
enlarged café/vendeteria for staff and faculty. The educational spaces include an 80 seat classroom and two conference rooms. Completion of Phase II is slated for December 2011. Financing for this project includes $5 million of bond funding and $2.5 million from the University’s annual capital budget over a three year period. The University also expects $1.25 million in government funding. The Setting Our Sights capital campaign seeks to raise the remaining $2.5 million. Currently, the campaign has garnered nearly $2.1 million in pledges from the University’s Board of Trustees, alumni, faculty, administrators, staff, students, and friends, as well as from corporations. The goal for alumni giving is $1.26 million and, as of November 2011, alumni have generously contributed more than $1 million. Individuals who make donor contributions of $500 and $1000 have the opportunity to have an engraved brick installed on the walkway outside The Eye Institute’s main entrance. For contributions of $500 or more, a donor is entitled to a 4”x 8” brick; $1000 or higher donations will be recognized with an 8”x 8” brick. All alumni will be receiving a mailing describing the brick donations. For questions or further information on how you can contribute, contact Lynne Corboy at lcorboy@salus.edu or call 215.780.1391.
Seemore’s Provenance Seemore was originally created as part of the 2006 “AbZOOlutely Chestnut Hill” public art initiative and fundraiser. The Eye Institute purchased the unpainted and once unnamed, nine-foot fiberglass bear bench with the intent to select an artist, name the bear and have it displayed “front and center” in the clinical facility’s pediatric service. Local artist and book illustrator, Rebecca Thornburgh, transformed Seemore into a whimsical visionary world with a “See What You Can Find” theme. Before The Eye Institute reopened in May 2011, Ms. Thornburgh gave Seemore a facelift and also created a mural on the walls of the pediatric waiting area to expand his whimsical world. 3
University Growth Agenda: Prudent, Smart, Global
Salus University continues to pursue its mission “to protect and enhance health and well-being” by the expansion of its program offerings. Our future is now anchored in a growth agenda that will provide more choices for more students both domestically and internationally. In 2011 there were two programs launched, a new, online Advanced Studies in Cochlear Implants certificate program by the Osborne College of Audiology (OCA), and a wholly distance Master of Public Health (MPH) degree and certificate program by the College of Health Sciences. One of the new programs to be launched in 2012 is a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Biomedicine with an embedded Master of Science (MSc) research degree. These new graduate research programs are designed to meet the needs of the University’s unique international and domestic student markets. Additionally, PCO will launch a new Scholars Program next year, designed for academically talented and highly motivated optometry students. Consistent with similar programs in other health care professions, PCO Scholars will complete an accredited, year-round, thirty-six month Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree program that has the credit equivalency of the current traditional program. Also expected to begin in 2012 is a new distance AuD Bridge Program from OCA, which will have an expanded market and target the needs of the international audiologist. In September, the University Board of Trustees approved new graduate programs in Occupational Therapy and Speech-Language Pathology. Both programs will offer master’s and doctoral level degree pathways, as well as specialty certificate programs, and will be offered through the University’s College of Education and Rehabilitation (CER). These new programs, designed to build on our institutional
Abraham Gonen, OD ’73, associate dean, director for international education, took on the role of director for international education at PCO in 1994, with the intent to focus on the expansion of optometry’s scope of practice worldwide. To that end, he worked on degree and non-degree program development, implementation and supervision with colleagues at PCO. Today, utilizing his knowledge of international affairs, his expertise in optometry and his ability to speak seven languages, Dr. Gonen collaborates with international professional 4
strengths, will take advantage of existing areas of University expertise in areas such as vision rehabilitation, brain injury and health policy. These new academic initiatives will add value and synergy to the University’s current offerings by adding “more choices for more students.” Our goal is to differentiate Salus University, its programs, environment and interdisciplinary culture. We achieve this goal by pursuing thoughtful growth, carefully planned to ensure that new programs meet the needs of our students and the professions they will serve. As part of this growth, the University has begun expansion of its Center for International Studies (CIS). For more than twenty years, the CIS has been the organizational hub for the University’s global activities, begun when international optometrists in countries such as Australia, Canada and Spain expressed an interest in concentrated continuing education programs in diagnostic and therapeutic pharmaceuticals, as well as in courses emphasizing biomedical sciences and ophthalmic diseases. These initiatives quickly led to the development of PCO’s signature Master of Science in Clinical Optometry (MSc) and associated Bachelor of Science (BSc) bridge program. Twenty years later, these programs are delivered in countries such as Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Israel, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Norway, Poland and Finland. Typically the programs are conducted in collaboration with the host country’s academic institutions and/or professional associations. CIS students have been talented and motivated individuals, who not only sought advanced professional education, but also were committed to the development of the optometric profession in their respective countries. Our PCO programs have been recognized by governmental regulatory and accreditation agencies. Many of our graduates have sought further education and credentials, earning PhD associations, educational institutions and government authorities to deliver degree and non-degree programs. Melissa Padilla, director of the Office of Professional Studies and International Programs, assists each College with the planning, development, marketing, administration, implementation and evaluation of continuing education programs and international initiatives. Ms. Padilla is the former executive director of the World Council of Optometry (WCO), has earned a post-graduate diploma in Public Health from the London

Our future is now anchored in a growth agenda that will provide more choices for more students both domestically and internationally. degrees and fellowships in the American Academy of Optometry. Our programs have had an historical impact on the scope of practice for many individual practitioners and have contributed to changes in the laws governing the profession of optometry. We are now exploring market opportunities in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. In addition, as alumni of our programs begin to seek additional post-graduate education, a two-week, on-campus clinical program is being developed for graduates of the Master of Science in Clinical Optometry program. Throughout these initiatives, we have incorporated faculty development opportunities for our collaborating academic partners. This has helped to build in-country capacity for continued growth. A joint PhD program with Cardiff University was established to provide MSc graduates an opportunity for advanced research training, a program that has led to the new Salus University PhD in Biomedicine. Our global efforts were enhanced during the 1996 - 2008 period when PCO served as the secretariat for the World Council of Optometry (WCO), an international optometric organization representing 250,000 optometrists from 80 member organizations in 45 countries, giving us a window to the changing trends in world optometry. With the establishment of Salus University in 2008, a new strategic plan was approved that envisions the continued expansion of our global footprint to encompass international programs beyond optometry. The overarching goal is to develop new academic programs for the international markets in audiology, education and rehabilitation programs,
School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and is completing a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree at Salus, where she has worked for eighteen years. Janet Wilbur is a program manager for the Office of Professional Studies and International Programs. Since her arrival in 2008, Ms. Wilbur has been responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of professional studies and international programs, responsibilities well served by her twenty years of knowledge and experience in corporate training.
public health, and physician assistant studies that build on the University’s distinctive character. Ultimately, this will create greater interdisciplinary vitality for both students and faculty, while yielding greater organizational strength. In order to achieve these goals, the Center for International Studies (CIS) was recently transformed into the Office of Professional Studies and International Programs (PSIP). Historically, CIS has served the post-graduate and international program needs of optometry. PSIP is now organizationally positioned at the University level to provide administrative support for all four of the University’s colleges. This new support will include services such as feasibility studies, marketing analyses/strategies, and operational support. Each college will have full responsibility for the academic program development, educational policies and overall assurance of academic integrity for their respective programs. PSIP will utilize its years of experience and success to support our expansion into new international markets. The University is very fortunate to have an accomplished team to lead this organizational transformation. (see below) PSIP’s goal is to advance the international footprint of the University’s academic programs across all the colleges. In so doing, it will enrich our educational environment and interdisciplinary culture, and build on our history of innovation and leadership. All of these program choices – domestic and international for current, future and past students will be distinctive, building on the University’s rich, 92 year history of innovation and leadership.
Bethany Watson is a program manager for the Office of Professional Studies and International Programs. She manages continuing education programs and international initiatives. Ms. Watson joined the University in 2010 after working at Wachovia for ten years and has substantive experience in program and financial management, marketing and communications, research, and fundraising.

In Memoriam: Martin Hafter, OD ’49
Left: The Hafters and Dr. Thomas L. Lewis at the opening of the Hafter Student Community Center in October 2006.
The Salus University community lost a true and great friend on October 14, 2011. Dr. Martin Hafter ’49, his wife, Florence, and their family have been supporters of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry and Salus University for many years. The Hafter family is responsible for many major gifts to the University and no individual in the history of this institution has contributed more. Dr. Hafter attended Drexel University, entering the U.S. Army in November 1942 during World War II. After the war, he came to PCO and worked in the electrical department at Sears on the weekends, according to long-time friend and classmate, Dr. Harry Kaplan ’49, PCO assistant professor. “Marty was a smart student with a reputation for having the ‘golden touch’ in all things business; he had foresight,” he remembers, saying that Dr. Hafter got interested in war surplus items and recalling he would occasionally disappear for two or three days at a time. “When I asked him what he was doing, Marty said he was buying up surplus lots and shipping them directly to customers, since he didn’t have a warehouse.” Given his proven talent for business, Dr. Hafter practiced for a time after his graduation from PCO, eventually leaving practice to devote his full attention to the electrical business that proved to be highly successful. According to Dr. Kaplan, though he no longer practiced optometry, “Marty never lost interest in the profession.”
lifetime. The Hafter Student Community Center is the result. There are also the Hafter Chair in Pharmacology, the Hafter Fellow in Neuro-Ophthalmic Disease, and many other University projects supported over the years by Dr. and Mrs. Hafter and the Hafter Family Foundation. “He was a very philanthropic individual, but always in an unobtrusive way,” says Dr. Kaplan. He points out that Marty never asked to have the Hafter Center named after himself. “He was very humble about his support of PCO/Salus, Drexel University and Deborah Hospital, among many others. Summing up his good friend, Dr. Kaplan said, “Marty was very humble, financially smart and he gave a lot back to the world.” On campus, Marty Hafter will be remembered as a PCO alumnus and Salus benefactor whose generosity will have an impact on generations of future students and their patients. For those who knew him however, husband, father, grandfather and dear friend would be his choices for being remembered. The University community extends heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Florence Hafter, her children and her grandchildren.
Dr. Hafter quietly supported those causes he believed in and never sought attention for the contributions the Hafter Family Foundation made to many causes and institutions. When PCO moved from the Oak Lane campus to Elkins Park in 1998, the new campus lacked a social meeting space for the campus community. Dr. Hafter agreed that such a space would serve to nurture friendships begun in classrooms that would continue personally and professionally for a 8

AudiologyNOW! 2011
American Academy of Audiology April 6-9, 2011 Chicago, Illinois
The world’s largest gathering of audiologists, AudiologyNOW!, was held from April 6-9, 2011 in Chicago, Illinois. This annual meeting of the American Academy of Audiology provides the opportunity for attendees to participate in four days of educational sessions, explore the latest in hearing technology, and network with colleagues from around the world. In light of the positive response received last year, Dr. Rita Chaiken ’03, adjunct, Dr. Tricia Dabrowski ’07, director of the Pennsylvania Ear Institute, and Dr. Jiovanne Hughart offered a pre-conference cerumen management workshop again this year. The University’s George S. Osborne College of Audiology (OCA) was well represented this year. OCA had a booth at the conference for the first time and Dean Victor Bray and Dr. Giri Sundar were on hand to speak to interested attendees about the
College’s new Advanced Studies Certificate in Cochlear Implants. Joining them was first year audiology student Diya “Pennie” Guo, MPH, who was able to discuss the Salus University Public Health programs with interested visitors. Adjunct Dr. Eileen Rall was elected to the Academy’s Board of Directors effective July 1, 2011, and also was selected by the Board to be their secretary/treasurer-elect. Dr. Rall is also the Salus University 2011 Audiology Professor of the Year, an annual award voted by the student body. A reception at the conference, sponsored by the University’s Alumni Association with Dean Bray as host, was held for OCA alumni, faculty and students. Always a high point, the reception brought together faculty, alumni and current students, providing a welcome opportunity for everyone to renew old friendships and enlarge their circle of colleagues and friends.

Reunion 2011
On April 30, PCO alumni came to Elkins Park for the opportunity to re-visit or see the campus for the first time, check on the progress of renovations at The Eye Institute and, most importantly, spend time with old friends. Daytime tours of The Eye Institute’s newly renovated patient care area, which were in their final stages of completion, were on the agenda this year, along with tours of the facilities on the Elkins Park campus. A buffet luncheon was held in the University’s Café, allowing the opportunity for alumni to visit with old classmates and their spouses. In the evening, a faculty cocktail reception allowed alumni to meet their former teachers and mentors, resulting in the telling of shared experiences and much laughter. The faculty reception was followed by an evening of casino games, dancing and a buffet dinner.
The Albert Fitch Memorial Alumnus of the Year Award was presented to Joseph P. Shovlin, OD ’80, FAAO, DNAP, by Alumni Association president, John Ochsenreither, OD ’88. Salus University Annual Report
“Our faculty and staff are wonderfully creative and hard working, but many of our initiatives would not get off the ground without the philanthropic support received by the University. Lynne C. Corboy Director of Development
Salus University is fortunate to have many loyal alumni and friends who provide critical financial support to the institution. Our faculty and staff are wonderfully creative and hard working, but many of our initiatives would not get off the ground without the philanthropic support received by the University. This Annual Report is another opportunity for us to say thank you and to recognize those who have contributed to our success during the year. A continuing initiative in 2011 was Setting Our Sights: The Campaign for The Eye Institute of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. As of June 30, our supporters had pledged $1,767,509 to renovate and redesign The Eye Institute, the primary clinical facility for our optometry program. This represents 71% of our campaign goal of $2.5 million, which we plan to complete by the end of fiscal year 2012. Our alumni have been especially generous in this effort, contributing more than half of this total.
Overall, the University received $898,429 in the fiscal year ending on June 30, 2011. Unrestricted annual gifts were used for the operations of the University, including faculty salaries, new equipment in our labs and clinics, and scholarships to attract academically strong students. Many donors also provided the University with gifts restricted to specific purposes. Our students benefited from gifts for endowed scholarships, graduations awards and support for international humanitarian missions organized by both audiology and optometry students. We also received support for our clinical services, particularly our pediatric services and the Specialized Populations Assessment and Rehabilitation Center (SPARC), where we work with children with multiple disabilities. Significant support for our pediatric services also was received through the annual Looking Out For Kids fundraising event attended by over 200 individuals. On behalf of the University, I again want to thank all whose contributions have enabled us to continue to maintain a solid foundation for the University and its colleges. It would not have been possible without each one of you.
Lynne C. Corboy, MS, MPH Director of Development
