FROM THE PRESIDENT
Legacy: something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor or from the past. MERRIAM-WEBSTER’S COLLEGIATE DICTIONARY
The theme throughout this issue, legacy, has been the object of careful consideration and the topic of much discussion. As with most definitions, the meaning is subjective and I have observed that the word legacy elicits a variety of responses within the Salus community. For many, legacy may mean name plaques on classrooms, lecture halls, offices, conference rooms, labs and buildings – all evidence of our donors’ generosity. For others, legacy is a newly arrived first year student, who might be the second or third generation in a family to matriculate here. For many students, legacy is a scholarship award. The Eye Institute (TEI) currently is undergoing an 18 month, $10 million renovation. At publication time the project’s capital campaign, Setting Our Sights, was off to a good beginning. With the help of alumni, faculty, staff, students and other supporters, The “new” Eye Institute will substantiate our commitment to provide the best care for our patients and the best education for our students – two more longstanding legacies. A legacy takes many forms, not all of them tangible. It can involve precepting, mentoring or contributions of time, effort and/or dollars. With the April launch of its renovation, we have strengthened a “legacy” of community service – The Eye Institute. Following a tradition of service to the community that dates from 1919, TEI is a major factor in many students’ decision to attend the Pennsylvania College of Optometry.
Thomas L. Lewis, OD ’70, PhD President
Over the years, TEI has affected the lives of thousands of people who have looked to us for vision care. We need to ensure that The Eye Institute remains among the best and attracts the brightest. In addition to Setting Our Sights, we continue to examine ways in which we can build on another legacy – innovative programs compatible with our interdisciplinary view of health care. This fall we begin a new Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program. Student centered, cost effective and taught entirely online, this program was created to help raise the profiles of optometry, audiology and physician assistant in the public health arena. The Salus MPH program offers students from around the globe flexibility, value and the opportunity to work with an international faculty bringing recognized leadership and expertise in a variety of public health fields. Over the years I have had the privilege and responsibility of calling on many of our alumni to help support our alma mater. Their response to those requests always reminds me that our most important legacy is our people. That unfailing and willing response – at times despite difficult economic times, philosophical differences, or building practices and families – is the ultimate expression of the word legacy for me.
Thomas L. Lewis, OD ’70, PhD President

Legacy: Clinical Education
A curriculum with an emphasis on clinical skills has always been one of the hallmarks of a PCO education. Today, this tenet guides the University, whose four colleges can trace their lineage through PCO back to 1919, when Albert Fitch founded the Pennsylvania State College of Optometry.* Ninety-one years of history have led to an abundance of legacies, one of which is a deep commitment to clinical and direct service** education, for which the University’s degree programs are recognized today. The clinical education we offer is a large part of what attracts prospective students to our optometry, audiology and physician assistant programs. From a few rooms in the original PSCO building on Spring Garden Street, to present day clinical facilities and labs for each program, attention to the clinical education of our students has been paramount. In keeping with that tradition, PCO in 2001 broke new ground with a curriculum that featured earlier and more clinical experience than any optometric institution offered at that time. This PCO legacy is a key component for each program within the University today. In 1999, when he wanted to launch a Doctor of Audiology degree program that would be on a par with other professions such as optometry, podiatry, and dentistry, it was our commitment to clinical education that attracted Dr. George S. Osborne to PCO. Solid biomedical curricula and early clinical exposure and training, combined with excellent faculty have become “trademarks” for the optometry, audiology and physician assistant programs. Program standards in the College of Education and Rehabilitation require observation, fieldwork, internships and co-teaching for our master’s degree students.
At the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, students now receive 16 months of clinical education beginning in the fall semester of their second year. By graduation, each will have acquired more than 3,000 hours of patient experience. At the Osborne College of Audiology, in addition to a biomedical curriculum that sets our program apart from many others, students receive 12 months of clinical exposure. By graduation, these students will have acquired more than 2,500 hours of patient experience. At the College of Health Sciences, physician assistant students begin the first of ten different clinical rotations in the fall semester of their second year. The students will have acquired more than 2,100 hours of patient experience by graduation.
Each Salus college/program has its own clinical education or service training model and all of them feature early exposure. From these programs we produce clinicians and professionals who graduate as able members of today’s health care teams or as proficient service professionals.
*The name was changed to Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1964. **The College of Education and Rehabilitation’s equivalent to clinical education. 2

FALL 2010
SALUS LEGACIES
At the College of Education and Rehabilitation, students come to Elkins Park each summer for two to ten weeks of face-to-face classes, featuring hands-on experience in their area of specialty, both in the field and in the Living Skills lab on campus. Low vision program students receive clinical training at the Feinbloom Center at TEI. Additionally, all students must complete fieldwork, internships and co-teaching. At the PCO International Program clinical site in Elkins Park, students come for two clinical rotations during their Master of Science in Clinical Optometry program. They
receive a total of 117 hours of patient experience during these rotations, with the second rotation exposing the students to more challenging diagnoses. Many student externs report that their clinical education is broader and deeper than that of their peers, with whom they share externships. True of optometry in particular, but also true of the audiology and physician assistant programs, students report that fellow externs from other programs are sometimes surprised to learn about the scope of our externs’ clinical education and what they experience before they leave campus. The depth of direct service training for our students in the College of Education and Rehabilitation is highly regarded among the professions our students enter. Educating strong clinicians and service providers is but one of our strengths; the University and each of its programs have many advantages to offer tomorrow’s health professionals. Among the best advantages we have are a committed faculty, involved alumni, motivated students and supportive staff members. It is the combination of these last elements that comprises what arguably may be one of our greatest legacies: we honor our past as we work for our future.

Setting Our Sights: The Campaign for The Eye Institute of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry By Lynne C. Corboy, MS, MPH
Enormous changes have occurred in the practice of optometry since The Eye Institute was first designed in the mid-1970s. Advances in technology from the personal computer to digitized diagnostic equipment have revolutionized vision care. The scope of practice in optometry is significantly expanded and more medical than ever before. Third party reimbursement, patient privacy and medical records have all significantly evolved. For several years PCO administration, faculty and staff have worked with architects to develop a plan for The Eye Institute that addresses these external changes, and earlier this year ground was broken for a significant redesign and renovation of the facility. The “new” Eye Institute is designed for efficient, high quality patient care that respects patient privacy. Today’s technology will be incorporated so that a variety of diagnostic instrumentation and electronic medical records are seamlessly integrated. Most importantly for a college of optometry, our students will be trained in an environment where the profession is practiced at the highest level, using the most up to date instrumentation and technology. A nearly 15,000 square foot build-out of The Eye Institute’s lower level will allow for all patient care services to occur on one level. The one main entrance to the facility is located on the lower level and opens into a large central waiting area. The registration area, prescreening area, expanded eyewear center and contact lens dispensing area are centrally located here. Vision care services will be provided in three adult primary care suites, a pediatric suite, and a specialty care suite that includes referral ophthalmologic services and special testing. Each suite will include eight or nine exam rooms, a team work area and faculty work stations. The team work areas
have been designed to provide a place for students to discuss clinical issues with faculty, input patient data into an electronic database and complete all patient care related paperwork. The areas will have computers for students to conduct online searches, and technology that provides the capability for a video feed from an exam room, so that multiple students can share in interesting clinical encounters. Complete with computers and telephones, the faculty work stations in the team work areas will keep faculty in close proximity to the students they supervise and the patients they care for. The Eye Institute’s upper level will house faculty offices and administrative support functions. The residents will have a suite of shared offices and a work area. Adjacent to the faculty and residents’ offices will be a lounge for their use. The upper level also will feature a state-of-the-art classroom and conference rooms for lectures, conferences, grand rounds, and general meeting space. Additionally there will be approximately 12,000 square feet of un-renovated upper level space for future growth for TEI, other University initiatives, or perhaps outside tenants. The University will be funding this $10 million project with $5 million in bond financing, $2.5 million in Salus University capital funds and a $2.5 million capital campaign. Setting Our Sights: The Campaign for The Eye Institute of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry will reach out to alumni and friends, corporations and foundations to complete this project that is so critical to the mission of the University. Over the years the supporters of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry and of Salus University have partnered with us to undertake a number of important ventures, notably the development of the Elkins Park campus and the construction
…Most importantly, as a college of optometry, our students will be trained in an environment where the profession is practiced at the highest level, using the most up to date instrumentation and technology. 4

Commencement: The Classes of 2010
The University held three commencement ceremonies this year, awarding a total of 666 degrees to graduates of four degree programs. Additionally, 30 residency certificates were awarded to departing TEI residents. Osborne College of Audiology
On Friday, May 21, the Osborne College of Audiology (OCA) held its commencement, awarding 375 Doctor of Audiology (AuD) degrees. Seven residential students joined more than 200 AuD bridge program students who came to Elkins Park with their families and friends to participate in the ceremony. A moment of silence was held in honor of the late Alison Friedrich Berry, AuD ’10. Dr. Berry’s family was on hand from Texas to receive her diploma. An honorary Doctor of Science degree was awarded to Fred H. Bess, PhD, professor and director of the National Center for Childhood Deafness and Family Communication at Vanderbilt University. This was the final graduating class of the AuDonline bridge program. The final Doctor of Audiology degree of this
program was awarded posthumously to the program’s founder, Dr. George S. Osborne, and accepted by his wife, Joan. Begun in 2000 (when it was the PCO School of Audiology), the AuD program has awarded 2,119 AuD degrees. Today, Osborne College of Audiology alumni comprise just over 23% of all current AuD degree holders in this country. Additionally, the profession of audiology has realized its goal of at least 50% of all audiologists holding a Doctor of Audiology degree, a cause for which Dr. Osborne worked tirelessly.

American Academy of Audiology Meeting: San Diego
Some of the OCA faculty, alumni and students who attended AudiologyNOW!
AudiologyNOW! – San Diego 2010
In April, the American Academy of Audiology held its annual meeting in San Diego. The Academy meeting enables Osborne College of Audiology alumni to get together at the college’s Open House with faculty, students and fellow alumni. This year Dean Victor Bray announced that the American Foundation of America (AFA) had established the Anita T. Pikus, AuD Memorial Endowed Student Excellence Scholarship, an announcement received with enthusiastic applause from OCA alumni, faculty, students and staff, many of whom were colleagues of Dr. Pikus. OCA Open House
The college sponsored three events at the Academy meeting. An Open House, held on April 14 for alumni, faculty and students, was followed by the traditional “Champagne and Chocolate” reception for the distance program graduates and students. On April 15, the college hosted a reception for the residential program graduates and students. In another announcement made at the Open House, Dean Bray told attendees that the original mission of the AuD distance-education program, which concluded in May, was to help “jump-start the profession of Audiology to the AuD level.” He announced a new mission called “DE 2.0” (DE for distance education). Currently in the formative stages, the DE 2.0 program will focus domestically on which on-line education is of the most value to OCA graduates. Also being examined is whether an updated, on-line AuD-bridge program that meets the international needs of Audiology can be delivered. Tricia Dabrowski, AuD ’07, assistant professor and director of the Pennsylvania Ear Institute, joined Rita Chaiken, AuD ’03, adjunct faculty to both the distance education and

TEI Tales In response to a February request made to all alumni for their stories about The Eye Institute, we received a number of entries but had room for only one. We thank everyone who submitted a story.
Submitted by Phil Schwartz, OD, President, PCO Class of 1979 The Class of 1979 was one of the first classes to benefit from the new facility. When the new building opened, we were all excited, as our days in the aging Broad & Olney and Spring Garden Street clinics were, thankfully, at an end. However, there was a problem with the drainage system to the east side of the new building, a fact astutely recognized by several members of our class while gazing out the windows between patients.
12
During the lunch hour on this particular day, the area of the property that had filled with rain water was christened “Lake Tute,” and a lake party was quickly organized. The party was attended by a hearty group of swimmers who treated the onlookers and gawkers to the first (and, as it turned out, only) across-the-lake race.
Alas, the drainage problem was corrected shortly thereafter, and all future races were canceled. Lake Tute is now only a memory for the Class of ’79, and for the early patients who were traumatized by the behavior of their student clinicians.

2009-2010
Salus University Annual Report
Salus University has been able to build a strong foundation for its colleges due in part to the generosity and foresight of its alumni and friends. Lynne C. Corboy Director of Development
We all have witnessed the economic uncertainty over the past several years, and we are very grateful for the continued support that we have received. This Annual Report is another opportunity for us to say thank you and recognize those who have contributed to our success during the year. The University received nearly $845,000 in the fiscal year ending on June 30, 2010. Unrestricted annual gifts were used for the operations of the University, including faculty salaries, new equipment in our labs and clinics, and scholarships to attract academically strong students. Many donors also provided the University with gifts restricted to specific purposes. Our students benefited from gifts for endowed scholarships, graduations awards and support for international humanitarian missions organized by both audiology and optometry students. We also received support for our clinical services, particularly our pediatric services and the Specialized Populations Assessment and Rehabilitation Center (SPARC), where we work with children with multiple disabilities. Important support from corporate friends of the University also continues. Whether these firms contribute to our special events or continuing education, or provide us with their products, we sincerely appreciate their continued involvement. This fiscal year our corporate partners helped us to celebrate
the ninetieth anniversary of the establishment of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at an event that offered hands-on continuing education, and exhibit hall and an equipment fair for our optometry students. During 2010 and 2011 the University is embarking on a new campaign – Setting Our Sights: the Campaign for The Eye Institute of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. As we described in this issue of the Alumni Magazine, the redesign and renovation of The Eye Institute will allow us to maintain our legacy of excellent clinical education in optometry. We will be reaching out to alumni and friends once again for help in financing this very important undertaking. The initial response to the campaign has been encouraging and we anticipate that many of our alumni will want to support a project so central to the mission of the College. On behalf of the University, I again want to thank all whose contributions have enabled us to build a solid foundation for the University and its colleges. It would not have been possible without each one of you.
