FALL 2013
F R O M the p r esi d ent
I’ve now been president for about five months, and a great deal has transpired since my taking the helm of our university. The Salus community – alumni, faculty, students and staff – have all welcomed me warmly and I have been surprised at how quickly everyone has contributed their input and experience, and embraced change and new ideas. It’s been a pleasure to hear from alumni and to listen to your comments, concerns and ideas. I look forward to hearing from you frequently and meeting more of you as I travel on University business. When I arrived here in Elkins Park, I began a “100 Days of Listening” campaign, establishing four Tiger Teams to actively collect input from their constituencies (students, faculty, alumni, staff and Board of Trustees) based on three questions: What is working well at Salus?; What area(s) need improvement?; What would make Salus a better place? Additionally, I’ve held several discussion sessions with staff, faculty, alumni and students, as well as sent out a letter to all alumni, which afforded me the opportunity to hear your issues. As we go to press, my first 100 days are behind me and each Tiger Team has provided their impressions and answers to the questions I posed back in July. The good news is that there were few surprises. I’ve been able to share this information at University-wide meetings as well as on my new blog (salusuniversitypresident.blogspot.com). The next step will be to work closely with our President’s Council to synthesize all of this great input towards informing our strategic plan for the next three to five years. To get that process jump-started, I took the President’s Council on a two-day offsite meeting to develop our unified vision for the next several years. I’m extremely excited about what I’ve heard and even more so about what we can do with the information. Stay tuned for more to come on this. As an alumnus I understand the importance of underscoring and respecting our University’s legacy, built over more than nine decades through the dedication of many of our past administrators, faculty and staff. Transitions, while an inevitable part of every successful organization, often bring change that is both exciting and bittersweet. Such is the situation on campus with the announcements made in late summer, early fall that we will be seeing a “changing of the guard” in three key leadership positions over the next few months: vice president, Academic Affairs (expanded to vice president for Academic Affairs/Provost); vice president, Patient Care Services (renamed vice president of Clinical Operations to include The Eye Institute, Pennsylvania Ear Institute, Feinbloom Vision Rehabilitation Center and any future clinical entities), and dean, Pennsylvania College of Optometry.
Our current administrators in those positions, Dr. Anthony F. Di Stefano, Dr. Susan C. Oleszewski, and Dr. Linda Casser, are outstanding professionals. Each in their own right has made tireless and significant contributions to our success, and we are fortunate to have the benefit of this outstanding trio of senior leaders. Their love for Salus is matched only by their devotion to the students we educate and the patients we treat. Consistent with our educational and service missions, a well-planned transition process is underway to fill these key positions. Faculty-led search committees have been established to help select the right leaders to fill these very large voids. The search processes will serve to strengthen the role of the academic community by positioning us for the next exciting stage of University development. As we continue our evolution as a university, a missing pivotal position is that of chief of staff. To that end, I’ve asked Dr. Susan Oleszewski to serve as my chief of staff and much to my delight she has accepted this new position. Starting in December, Sue will move up to the Elkins Park campus to commence her new, expanded duties. The University and I will benefit greatly from having Sue in this position. I believe it is our destiny to set a new standard and lead the transition of American health, educational and rehabilitation education through this century and beyond. With your help and support we will realize these goals. As I’ve said in the past, the challenges will be great, but the rewards will be many. Our University and associated programs remain strong and world class. I look forward to continuing to keep you all in the loop and to working with each and every one of you as, together we forge our path into the future. With best wishes for the holidays and the New Year,
Michael H. Mittelman, OD ’80, MPH

New Salus President, Dr. Michael H. Mittelman After thirty-three years of military service a natural tendency might be to decelerate and enjoy life outside of the workplace for a bit. Not so for Michael H. Mittelman, OD, MPH, the new president of Salus University. The former rear admiral and deputy surgeon general of the United States Navy has not slowed down since his July 15 “official” arrival on campus, except to take a few weeks off to move from suburban DC to Pennsylvania. Joining the Navy after his 1980 graduation from Pennsylvania College of Optometry, his exemplary career included posts around the world that covered land, sea and air responsibilities and ranged from being a naval base clinician to being a man who helped lead a global healthcare network of 63,000 Navy medical personnel around the world, providing high-quality healthcare to more than one million eligible beneficiaries. The highest-ranking optometrist in the US Armed Forces, Dr. Mittelman became one of the most influential medical professionals to serve in the American military. (see box) A dedicated runner and fitness buff, Dr. Mittelman is at his desk early and twice a week can be found in the Hafter Student Community Center even earlier, working his cardiofitness routine. He swims on the other days. He came to Salus because it was a “good fit,” and notes, “Coming out of the Navy Medical Service Corps in charge of all the Navy’s health science professionals and medical administrators gave me a good understanding of how the professions can work in an integrated healthcare delivery system.” He sees the Salus allgraduate level educational experience as unique. “We have an interprofessional education model not ubiquitous in the US higher education system, so we can concentrate on our core competencies.”
One of his first acts as president was to institute a series of town hall meetings with Salus employees, students and faculty. These informal, well-attended, 90-minute sessions were held at The Eye Institute (TEI) and in Elkins Park. Meeting with students, staff and faculty, Dr. Mittelman listened, answered questions and took notes. He explained to everyone that he was in his “100 Days of Listening,” saying, “Before I can make any changes in our current trajectory, I need to understand what you believe are our strengths, challenges and opportunities.” At press time Dr. Mittelman had just received data from four “Tiger Teams,” created from students, faculty, staff and Board of Trustees members. The teams were charged with polling their peers to get the answers to three questions: “What three things will make Salus a better place;” “What’s working exceptionally well at Salus” and “What can use improvement?” Alumni received a letter, asking for their input to those questions. During the first week in November the data was presented to the Salus community in Elkins Park and at TEI. (results posted in November 7 entry of salusuniversitypresident.blogspot.com). Dr. Mittelman expects the results will help to facilitate the University’s strategic planning for 2015-2020. Before his official start on July 15, 2013, Dr. Mittelman had a “tutorial and overlap year” with his predecessor, Dr. Thomas L. Lewis ’70, that he calls ”extremely useful.” “Tom Lewis was a gracious and wonderful mentor to me.” Noting the solvent state in which Dr. Lewis left the University, he sees the Lewis legacy as “a solid, granite base” and one of his goals as “building the building.” During the World Sight Day in October focused on UV-ray damage prevention. Dr. Mittelman joined students, faculty and staff in support of this year’s theme, “Be Shady.”
A partial listing of accomplishments include: • The first Navy aerospace optometrist. • The first optometrist to command a major naval hospital (Naval Hospital, Okinawa, Japan) • The first and only clinician to lead the Navy Medical Service Corps. • The first non-medical doctor to serve as a combatant command surgeon in the U.S. Pacific Command, which is the nation’s largest covering more than 60 percent of the world’s population, including China, Russia, North Korea, and India. • The first non-medical doctor to serve as the command surgeon for the U.S. Joint Forces Command and Allied Command Transformation (NATO). While serving in Japan, Dr. Mittelman directed the comprehensive U.S. military medical response as part of Operation Tomodachi (Operation Friends) following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that damaged the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The life-saving emergency response operation involved dozens of naval vessels, more than 150 aircraft, and upwards of 24,000 service personnel.

overlap year, he and Dr. Lewis spoke on the phone at least once a week. Dr. Mittelman was part of all major decisions affecting the University and its programs, and was on-campus whenever his military duties permitted, attending meetings, ceremonies and commencements. At the spring 2013 commencement, the Pennsylvania College of Optometry chain of office worn by his predecessors at commencement was conferred on Dr. Mittelman by Board of Trustees chair Ms. Jo Surpin and Dr. Lewis in a symbolic changing of the guard. (As sitting president, Dr. Lewis wore the Salus University chain of office). In September, President Mittelman wore the Salus chain of office at the Physician Assistant commencement, telling the graduates that they were entering a changing world of healthcare in which they were well-prepared to “help change the face of healthcare in this century and beyond.” That theme – changing and affecting the way healthcare is practiced in the U.S. – is a theme Dr. Mittelman believes Salus is well-placed to affect, given the professions now represented at the University and its emphasis on interprofessional healthcare education. Dr. Mittelman says Salus is relevant nationally and globally because “we are progressive and willing to have the internal debate about healthcare.” He sees the University as an influencer and a driver of change. He uses the University’s first Master of Public Health (MPH) graduates – who are located on three continents – as an example, saying “Salus MPH graduates will influence American and international healthcare.” He believes that the degree programs at Salus position the University to “have a say in how healthcare is going to be provided through this century.” He also believes that “defining the way care is provided in an integrated,

efficient and caring manner” is Salus’ most critical role in US healthcare today. Dr. Mike Mittelman is well-prepared to lead Salus University so that Salus University graduates are well-equipped to influence changes within the professions they serve.
In addition to being a highly decorated naval officer, Dr. Mittelman has been recognized by his medical peers. He is a: • Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, • Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO) • Diplomate in the FAAO Section in Public Health and Environmental Vision • Member of the American Optometric Association and recipient of its 2012 Distinguished Service Award • Past president of the Armed Forces Optometric Society and recipient of its Orion Award. • Recipient of the 2012 Distinguished Service Award of the American Optometric Association (AOA)

Client-Centered Focus: Technology and Library Services by Nan Myers
As the first Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Salus University, Bill Brichta, who began in January 2013, had his work cut out for him. And some dramatic results are beginning to show. “We really became a client-centered provider this year,” he says. “The key is to proactively ask ‘what do you need to be successful’ and then provide the leadership to create and support that for our students, faculty, and staff.” After serving as CIO and vice president for Technology at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown for six and a half years (prior to that at Lehigh University in other capacities, including twelve years as a director of Technology), Mr. Brichta says he came to Salus because “I thought I might really have an impact here. It seemed like an open opportunity to enhance delivery of services and to work with truly great people.” “The core issue is that technology never really sleeps,” he says. “There will always be something that you need to support – and support well – even if unknown today.” He and his staff of 19 in the Technology and Library Services (TLS) department advance key technology and library initiatives throughout Salus. “There are many connections that we touch directly. We oversee networking, technology refresh for desktop, email, the Blackboard course management system, wireless, network security, and numerous systems that work quietly behind the scenes.” He adds, “The day-today credit goes to our committed TLS staff who routinely create order out of chaos.” Some recent improvements include a new unified help desk. Now anyone with a technical problem on the Salus campus can call a single extension or email the help desk directly. In addition, the department has installed new wireless technology with additional bandwidth for the students, while a total campus migration from a legacy email system to gmail offered a more robust system at a lesser cost.
“We willingly test new ideas to propel things forward,” Mr. Brichta says. “So much of what we do is behind the scenes.” He gives as an example the virtualization of a large number of servers that cut down on costs as well as the Data Center footprint. The University is also moving from a legacy network structure to a software system that stores and organizes information, and checks passwords to determine whether the user is a system administrator or normal user. The department also has added more capabilities to the University’s Jenzabar software system to help manage student services and systems and this summer a migration from paper records to electronic patient records at The Eye Institute was completed successfully. Mr. Brichta’s role within the University’s administration enables him to work with the faculty, staff, students and administration to determine priorities. He and his department brainstorm a lot of ideas at their weekly meetings and move forward based on “five-year technology planning and a good set of committees.” “Our message is to deliver best practice technology,” he says. “We are looking at elevating all our planning for disaster recovery, including examining generator size and diversifying risk.” He is committed to ensuring that should something unforeseen occur, “the University is in a position to recover rapidly.” He speaks highly of Salus students, and looks to them to see how they view and use technology. “The Salus students are bright, mature and laser-focused,” he says, “which makes it a bit easier to try cutting-edge gains.” Bill Brichta looks forward to spearheading many more technology advancements at Salus. He comments, “One of the great results of installing new systems or leveraging new devices is that you frequently receive feedback about how remarkable it is…and that really motivates all of us to go hard after the next improvement. It fills the gas tank.”

Speech-Language Pathology Program to Launch by Nan Myers
Carolyn Mayo, PhD, CCC-SLP, who joined the Salus faculty in July to build a Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) program, says she can’t wait until the students are enrolled and the program is active. SLP professionals are responsible for assessing, diagnosing and treating communications and swallowing disorders. Specific disorders that may affect pediatric and adult conditions include stuttering, developmentally delayed speech and language, feeding and swallowing problems known as dysphagia, and aphasia or cognitive-linguistic disorders, typically the result of traumatic brain injury (TBI) or stroke. Under the leadership of College of Education and Rehabilitation (CER) Dean Audrey Smith, the SLP program is expected to enroll its first cohort of 25 to 30 students in the academic year 2014-2015 once the University earns candidacy status from the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (CAA/ASHA). “We expect to receive some initial feedback from the accrediting body by late November or early December” says Dr. Mayo. “Meanwhile, we are engaged in the internal University approval process of our 60 credit curriculum.” Unique features of the Salus curriculum include an enhanced background in integrative anatomy of the speech and swallowing mechanisms, including normal and abnormal structure and physiology; interprofessional education (IPE) with critical thinking and problem based learning at the IPE core; leadership development for management positions in school and medical settings, and prevention of communication disorders. These themes make Salus University’s approach to educating and training future speech-language pathologists distinct from other SLP graduate programs. “As graduates, our students will be prepared for clinical and leadership job opportunities across the lifespan and in various employment settings,” Dr. Mayo explains. The Master of Science (MS) degree program will be oncampus. In addition to on-campus instruction, the program will support students in their acquisition of the 400 clinical clock hours required by ASHA through local, regional and national clinical placement sites. Prospective students must have a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in SLP or have taken the required pre-requisite courses. (www.salus.edu/cer_Speech/slp_criteria.html) “The first stage toward accreditation is candidacy status,” Dr. Mayo explains. Once candidacy status is received, students can be enrolled in the program. After the inaugural class begins their program, the SLP program at Salus has up to five years in which to become fully accredited by the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA). That includes a three-to-five year continuous monitoring process that includes benchmarks such as graduation rates, number of students passing the national Praxis II exam for
speech-language pathology, and their employment status post-commencement. According to Dr. Mayo, she and the SLP faculty “will engage in formative evaluation of the academic and clinical components of the program to make certain students are developing the expected competencies needed to qualify for participation in the full scope of practice as a professional speech-language pathologist.“ The Salus speech-language pathology program is the second such program to be started by Dr. Mayo. “I love the opportunity to be creative,” she says, “and I love students, having worked with them on the undergrad and graduate levels for years.” With more than 30 years’ experience and expertise in the profession, including stints in education, SLP and public health, she notes, “I have been almost everything this discipline offers. I’ve been an active clinician, teacher, researcher, prevention advocate and an administrator at several institutions of higher education.” Dr. Mayo says Salus University was attractive because of its “emphasis on interprofessional education as well as health promotion and disease prevention. The whole health and wellness concept is embodied by the name Salus.” (Editor’s note: Salus is a Latin word for health and well-being). SLP professionals work in pre-schools, schools, hospitals, rehabilitation settings, private practices, skilled nursing facilities, long-term care facilities, government and private research agencies and corporations. In addition to the clinical opportunities, SLP students will be able to benefit from clinical research opportunities under the Salus umbrella. “Currently Salus students enrolled in other academic programs are conducting investigations with basic and clinical research professors. SLP students will have opportunities to both participate in and influence new research lines such as the cognitive-linguistic impact of traumatic brain injury (TBI).”
Dr. Mayo joined Salus from the Speech Program in the department of English at North Carolina AT&T State University in Greensboro, where she was a tenured professor of speech-language pathology. Her husband is a full professor of SLP at UNC Greensboro. Dr. Mayo is no stranger to the economics of education. In that spirit she makes a request to the Salus alumni community. “This is such a special program with a bright employment future for students. We offer evidence-based practice, the class and University size is intimate and, like many Salus programs, SLP will eventually offer international study,” she says. It is hoped that all Salus alumni will support the new Speech-Language Pathology degree program – and encourage prospective students to look at the Salus advantage.”

Commencements 2013 SPRING
The University’s Class of 2013 spring commencement for optometry, audiology, low vision and blindness education and rehabilitation, and public health graduates was held on May 26 at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, PA. This year’s commencement was historic for two reasons. Incoming president, Dr. Michael H. Mittelman was ceremonially gowned and given the Chain of Office by the University’s Board of Trustees Chair Jo Surpin and then current president, Dr. Thomas L. Lewis. The second reason of note was the first graduates of the University’s Master of Public Health degree program. Four of the six graduates in the inaugural class attended the ceremony.
6
The University conferred 157 Doctor of Optometry (OD) degrees; 20 Doctor of Audiology (AuD) degrees; 17 Master of Science (MS) degrees in low vision programs; one Master of Education (MEd) degree in Vision Rehabilitation Teaching; 21 Master of Science (MSc) degrees in Clinical Optometry to graduates from Norway (who completed two clinical rotations in Elkins Park during their program); six Master of Public Health (MPH) degrees, and 35 postgraduate certificates to members of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry Residency program.

FA L L
The University’s fall commencement for Physician Assistant (PA) Class of 2013 graduates was held on September 16. Faculty and graduates processed down Old York Road in front of the University to Keneseth Israel, where the ceremony was held. The graduates and their families and friends were welcomed by President Mittelman, who stepped in the day before as the keynote speaker, when the original invitee, Rear Admiral Terry Moulton, was confined to Washington DC due to the government sequester.
Honors for exceptional work (summa cum laude, magna cum laude and laude) were announced. A record 33% of the graduates earned honors and seven students were inducted into the Pi Alpha National Honor Society. After the recognition of honors awardees and receiving their diplomas the graduates led the procession back to the Hafter Student Center, where they enjoyed light refreshments with their guests.

Reunion 2013 The annual Alumni Reunion, held May 3-5, had a few added attractions for the enjoyment of attendees. The weekend’s events were all planned with an eye to the theme: “Come Laugh with Us.” On Friday evening two separate events were held and participants could choose between a happy hour at a local restaurant or a Philadelphia Orchestra concert. According to feedback from alumni and faculty who attended, both were a great start to the weekend, allowing people to get together before the main festivities. On Saturday, May 4, morning campus tours offered alumni and their guests a chance to see the University’s campus, as well as its optometry and audiology clinical facilities, The Eye Institute and the Pennsylvania Ear Institute. A buffet lunch in the University’s Café followed. After lunch an optional guided tour of historic area points of interest by the Old York Road Historical Society took place.
8
Saturday evening a cocktail reception held in the Bennett Lounge of the Hafter Student Community Center was followed by the alumni dinner. Prior to the dinner, alumni and their guests were welcomed by President Thomas L. Lewis ’70, and awards were presented by Alumni Association president, Dr. Rob Spivack ’85, with PCO dean, Dr. Linda Casser and Osborne College of Audiology dean, Dr. Victor Bray. This year’s awardees were Robert P. Bittel, Jr., OD ’83, FAAO, Albert Fitch Memorial Alumnus of the Year; Robert M. DiSogra, AuD ’03, Audiology Alumnus of the Year; Harry Kaplan, OD ’49, who was honored with a Special Recognition award, and the New Jersey Academy of Optometry (NJAO), which was presented with a Public Service Award. Current NJOA president, Dr. Clark Chang ’07, accepted the award on behalf of the membership.

University News In July, the University community officially welcomed Michael H. Mittelman, OD ’80, MPH, FAAO, as the sixth president in our 94-year history. Dr. Mittelman was Deputy SurgeonGeneral of the US Navy until he retired in June with the rank of Rear Admiral after thirty-three years of military service. During the course of his naval career, Dr. Mitttelman worked closely with all of the healthcare professions and acquired extensive knowledge of multiple healthcare disciplines, as well as healthcare delivery to diverse populations. (read more about Dr. Mittelman in an article on page 2). In separate decisions made public in July, August and September, three key University administrators announced their plans to step down. Anthony F. Di Stefano, OD ’73, MPH, vice president of Academic Affairs, announced in July that he would be stepping down effective June 30, 2014. After more than 45 years with PCO and Salus, Dr. Di Stefano told the Salus community in an email, “I will begin a one year sabbatical during which I will immerse myself in building world class programs in public health. PCO afforded me an opportunity to earn my Master of Public Health degree at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health in 1974. This experience was transformative in my professional life and I hope to ‘pass it on’ through my continued work at Salus.” Susan C. Oleszewski, OD ’76, executive vice president for Patient Care at The Eye Institute, announced in August that she would be transitioning from that position after eight years. In her announcement Dr. Oleszewski noted, “It has been a privilege to serve the optometry program for 35 years” and spoke of her realization that The Eye Institute’s clinical practice has been her life’s work. “I have grown up in its services, as a student, resident, teaching faculty, service chief, associate dean and vice president.” Dr. Oleszewski, who established TEI’s Looking Out for Kids annual fundraiser serving area children who are under-insured or have no vision insurance, will “continue to serve the University in meaningful ways.” (Editor’s note: at press time, Dr. Oleszewski had accepted the position of Chief of Staff to Salus president, Dr. Michael H. Mittelman and would begin her new position in December). Linda Casser, OD, dean of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, announced in September that she would be stepping down from her position on December 31, 2013 at the end of her five-year appointment. In her announcement Dr. Casser thanked the Salus community and said she was “extremely proud and appreciative of our many accomplishments, our strong work ethic, and our shared professionalism” adding, “I am confident that we have substantially contributed to the excellence and reputation of PCO as well as our profession.” Dr. Casser has agreed to remain as associate dean for the Practice of Optometric Medicine until June 30, 2014.
10
Of these senior administrators Dr. Mittelman said, “Dr. Anthony Di Stefano, Dr. Susan Oleszewski, and Dr. Linda Casser are outstanding professionals. Each, in their own right, has made tireless and significant contributions to our success. We are fortunate to have the benefit of this outstanding trio of senior leaders. Their love for Salus is matched only by their devotion to the students we educate and the patients we treat.” Dr. Pierrette Dayhaw-Barker received the University of Houston College of Optometry Distinguished Alumna Award in June at the University’s commencement, where she was the keynote speaker. Dr. DayhawBarker, associate dean, Graduate Programs in Biomedicine, was the first female PhD candidate in UHCO’s optometric program. Alexander Dizhoor, PhD, professor and Hafter Chair of Pharmacology, was granted a patent (US Patent #8470790) along with his co-inventor, Zhou-Ha Pan of Wayne State University for their work, “Restoration of visual responses by in vivo delivery of rhodopsin nucleic acids.” The scientists discovered how they could artificially impart the ability to generate light responses to ganglion cells in a mouse retina. Using the method they have developed, Drs. Dizhoor and Pan reason “this method, if properly developed in the future, could help restore visual perception in human patients whose photoreceptor cells are destroyed by congenital blinding disease.” Additionally, Dr. Dizhoor received a four-year renewal of his National Institutes of Health (NIH) research grant, “Regulation of cyclic GMP synthesis in photoreceptors.” Monae Kelsey has been appointed associate director of Student Engagement and assistant director of Admissions. The Cottet Library introduced two new library databases, AccessMedicine and PAEasy over the summer. AccessMedicine from McGraw-Hill is an innovative, online resource that provides students, residents, clinicians, researchers and all health professionals with access to more than 75 medical titles from the best minds in medicine, updated content, thousands of images and illustrations, interactive selfassessment, case files, time-saving diagnostic and point of care tools and a comprehensive search platform. PAEasy is a database that contains approximately 1,200 questions and answers that simulate PANCE (Physician Assistant National Certification Exam) and PANRE (Physician Assistant National Recertifying Exam) tests with full explanations of the answers. The database allows users to track their results performance by topic and test scores over time, and to their scores to others using PAEasy, including test-takers at Salus. This program also provides there unique testing modes which include untimed practice mode, a timed exam and a simulated test that replicates the official test and its conditions.

Salus University Annual Report
“ Future students will benefit from a new endowment… The Thomas L. Lewis Endowment Fund will be used to support outstanding students as well as other academic purposes of the University. ” Lynne C. Corboy, MS, MPH Director of Development
The end of the 2013 fiscal year marked the end of Dr. Thomas Lewis’s long and successful presidency. Over the course of his tenure the University forged wonderful partnerships with our alumni, friends, parents and corporate friends. These partnerships allowed us to realize much of his vision for the College and the University. The development of the Elkins Park campus, the creation of the Hafter Student Community Center and the redesign and renovation of The Eye Institute were made possible by the generosity of our many partners. Our annual report is another opportunity to thank all of those who have helped to realize our vision at Salus. The Eye Institute now has a completed patient-care level, as well as faculty and administrative areas. This key project would not have been possible without the support of our partners. Just before the close of the fiscal year the University was fortunate to receive a generous bequest to help fund this important facility. Motivated by his uncle, who was one of the founders of the Pennsylvania State College of Optometry, the Reverend Eugene Smith left his estate to PCO. Each year students benefit from gifts for endowed scholarships and graduation awards. Future students will benefit from a new endowment established to honor Dr. Lewis. The Thomas L. Lewis Endowment Fund will be used to support outstanding students as well as other academic purposes of the University. Donors have already made generous contributions so that this endowment can become a reality.
The University also received support for our clinical services, particularly our pediatric services and the Specialized Populations Assessment and Rehabilitation Center (SPARC), where we work with children with multiple disabilities. Significant support for our pediatric services was received through the Looking Out For Kids fundraising event attended by over 200 individuals last October. Overall, our partners, alumni and friends contributed a total of $665,500 for operating support as well as for special purposes. In the coming year we will continue to develop new programs, improve our facilities and move forward with our new president, Dr. Michael H. Mittelman. Amongst all of this change I look forward to a few things that stay the same – the support of our wonderful partners.
