FALL 2016
A Message from President Mittelman: SEASONS OF GROWTH Cool weather has finally arrived in Philadelphia with its crisp air, wavering temperatures and vivid landscapes. Along with the change in seasons come numerous exciting developments at Salus University. Through the vigor of our students, insight from our faculty, dedicated efforts of our staff, and the thoughtful direction of leadership, we have produced countless inspiring accomplishments this academic year, and I look forward to what lies ahead. As many of you know, Dr. Susan Oleszewski, who has been serving as chief of staff for the past several years, recently assumed the position of vice president for Institutional Advancement and Community Relations. In this new role, she’ll draw upon the long standing relationships she has with many of you in order to further the mission of the University, and increase our visibility and influence within our niche communities. As a result of this change, the Offices of Institutional Advancement and Communications are under Dr. Oleszewski’s leadership. I think this will allow for more uniformity and comprehensive messaging across the board. While Dr. Oleszewski’s shoes are impossible to fill, we’ve brought Mr. Brian Zuckerman on board as our new chief of staff and in-house counsel. For the past 13 years, Mr. Zuckerman has served as senior vice president – general counsel and secretary, for Pep Boys, bringing considerable corporate experience to Salus. During his 17-year tenure, he served as senior counsel, assistant vice president – chief legal and corporate governance officer. In this role, Mr. Zuckerman will help provide oversight for program growth, operational efficiency, and strategic planning and projects aligned with University priorities. More recently, we’ve welcomed a host of new faculty members spanning across each program. Our world-class faculty represents a significant investment in our programs, bringing novel ideas, high energy, motivation and innovation to Salus. In this issue, we highlight faculty members from each program, as their outstanding contributions to the University, commitment to student development and well-being, and their impact through teaching is the hallmark of a well-rounded Salus education. Our junior faculty members blaze the pathway for the University through fresh ideas, cutting-edge research, and compelling enthusiasm for educating future healthcare professionals. As we begin to eagerly polish the jewel that has evolved into Salus University, several renovation projects have commenced and will continue throughout the new year. The project that will transform our library into a Learning Resource Center began in August, and when completed, will be a centerpiece for educating, networking, and studying on campus. Additionally, I’m thrilled about the progress we’re making on the planning of the new optometric clinical skills lab. With a groundbreaking set for early January, an ambitious completion date will occur just a few months later. As I’ve said in the past, it’s our responsibility to set the standard and lead the evolution of healthcare, including its educational aspects, through this century and beyond. To that end, we continue to strive for changes in the scope of practice for all health professions to include the diagnosis and management of many chronic physiological disorders that currently plague our population such as diabetes and hypertension. Our institution consists of pioneers, guiding each initiative with excitement and passion. With your assistance and support, we will undoubtedly accomplish our current objectives and forge new ambitions for growth as Salus University remains an influential and worldclass institution. It’s an exciting endeavor, and together, I know we’ll have a bright future.
Michael H. Mittelman, OD ’80, MPH, FAAO, FACHE RADM, USN 1

KRITI BHAGAT, OD ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, PENNSYLVANIA COLLEGE OF OPTOMETRY Described as an “all or none firing neuron” in high school, Dr. Kriti Bhagat didn’t quite understand its meaning until taking a neuroscience class during her undergraduate studies at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. After researching the topic, it finally clicked – she has an uncompromising mindset which truly became one with her personality. “I had many driving factors in my life which have carried me this far in my career,” she said. “I completely fell in love with contact lenses early on and identified the direction I wanted to guide my career in.” After completing an undergraduate degree in Neuroscience and Psychology within three years, Dr. Bhagat tested the waters in the vision care industry as an ophthalmic technician prior to attending Salus University Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO). While studying at PCO, she received an Advanced Studies Certificate in Contact Lenses, due to her growing love for the subject. In addition, she completed a cornea and contact lens residency at The Eye Institute prior to becoming an instructor in the contact lens and dry eye specialty services. This innate interest has led her to jokingly “Every mentor I met label herself as “corny for corneas.” “Every mentor I met here at Salus has truly inspired me and pushed my career forward – I owe a lot of that encouragement to here at Salus has truly Dr. Joel Silbert, an authority in the field of contact lenses,” she noted.
inspired me and pushed my career forward.”
Currently, she’s working to identify new research opportunities in both fields. According to Dr. Bhagat, one of her growing concerns is online exams, where patients have the ability to order lenses online. “Contact lenses are not jewelry or a new pair of shoes, they’re a medical device,” she mentioned. “Patient education is extremely important when it comes to the correct use of contact lenses.” Exciting and entertaining is how Dr. Bhagat defines her teaching approach. “I have way too much fun in clinic – I love what I do and it truly comes across in my teaching,” she said. She prides herself on being a “hands-on” instructor, as class becomes a memorable experience where students are continually engaged. For Dr. Bhagat, passion for her craft and determination to educate future contact lens leaders motivate her daily.

DAVID A. SMITH, PA-C ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES – PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT As a former infantryman of the Second Ranger Battalion, David Smith, PA-C is no stranger to emergency medicine and critical care. Over the course of his 10 year military career with deployments in both Iraq and Afghanistan, his interest in the medical field intensified while providing instruction to First Responders and training closely with a Physician Assistant (PA). “The suffering and trauma I witnessed while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan was quite extensive, as you can imagine; I learned a great deal about the PA’s role in emergency medicine and without delay established a goal to work towards,” said Mr. Smith. After intense observation and countless hours of mentoring, his vision of becoming a Physician Assistant was cultivated. Upon returning to the states, he enrolled in the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine’s PA program,
and received his master’s degree in 2011. Mr. Smith’s passion for emergency medicine and student precepting roles at both the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs and Suburban Community Hospitals, led him to accept the position of assistant professor at Salus University. “Teaching was something I naturally enjoyed and took an interest in; having the opportunity to train my future colleagues is both an incredible responsibility and unbelievable honor,” he stated. Considering the fact that he’s just a handful of years out of graduate school himself, Mr. Smith believes in the importance of establishing a close relationship and mutual understanding of expectations with each student. “My teaching style is unique – informal with a sense of humor, but with clear standards,” he mentioned. “I found that getting to know each student on a one-
on-one level and making that initial connection is directly related to their academic success.” According to Mr. Smith, the military trained him to “meet the standard or objective, no matter how trivial or vast the feat.” This philosophy has since carried over to his teaching ideologies and techniques. In this case, providing quality clinical educational opportunities to Salus University students is his primary assignment.
BRE MYERS, AuD ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, OSBORNE COLLEGE OF AUDIOLOGY To some, music can be considered noise, but it also has the ability to move others to tears, striking vibrant memories of years past. At an early age, Dr. Bre Myers acquired a profound love for music and found herself intrigued at how certain songs, sounds, and lyrics could generate such intense feelings in different individuals. Studying the ear appeared to be a natural fit for her. Along the way, she was introduced to vestibular and balance testing, and truly found her calling. “I love all things involving the hearing side of audiology; however, the complexity of the balance and the vestibular system keeps me interested in learning and growing,” she said. Dr. Myers completed her Doctor of Audiology (AuD) through the first generation AuD bridge program within the then PCO School of Audiology in 2006. This experience gave her the necessary skills and tools to successfully open her private practice. While she enjoyed treating patients in this individualized setting, she found that ultimately, her goal was to interact with students in academia. Familiar with the University’s mission and vision, she accepted an adjunct
faculty position in 2008, noting, “I was excited to join the Audiology program, as it was the online bridge degree program that inspired me and provided the foundation and confidence to open my own practice.” In 2013, she was promoted to assistant professor and enrolled in the University’s PhD program in Biomedicine in order to continue to learn and contribute to the world’s knowledge base. Currently, Dr. Myers is working on several research projects including her dissertation on the interaction between diverse acoustic stimulus and postural control. Additionally, she is researching the history of noise exposure and its effect on the vestibular system. For the past few years, she has been involved with the University’s Veteran’s Readiness Initiative; an interdisciplinary screening project between Salus Optometry & Audiology programs focused on identifying veterans currently enrolled in local community colleges who may have underlying sensory impairments affecting their performance and daily lives. For Dr. Myers, inspiration stems from a personal desire to grow, as she lives by the saying, “Find something you’re passionate about, and keep tremendously interested in it.” The field of audiology currently faces many challenges – these challenges, coupled with the strong determination to educate the next generation of healthcare providers, are what drive Dr. Myers forward. 3
A New Generation of Faculty Leaders (continued) BHAWAN MINHAS, OD ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, DIRECTOR OF ON-CAMPUS RESIDENCY PROGRAMS, PENNSYLVANIA COLLEGE OF OPTOMETRY Hailing from the Great White North, Dr. Bhawan Minhas is a first generation Indian Canadian, and both honored, and humbled by that fact. Her parents emigrated from India and they have been an unwavering source of support for both her and her siblings, providing access to a brighter future with increased opportunities. Growing up, Dr. Minhas was extremely myopic, joking, “I think the late-night, under-the-covers reading of Goosebumps books with a flashlight is to blame for my -9 diopter prescription.” Naturally, she was intimately familiar with her optometrist – the lights, lenses, and dilating drops. “These elements became all too familiar at a young age and ultimately led me towards a logical career path,” she said. She attended the University of Calgary and pursued an undergraduate degree in biological sciences. She veered off the pre-med course for a short amount of time when she completed a minor in Primatology. “It started as an ‘easy’ elective and turned into somewhat of an obsession,” she exclaimed. “Part of my studies even included a short period in the jungle!” After spending time in the wilderness, she returned with a fierce determination to pursue a career in optometry, and relocated to Chicago to begin her education at the Illinois College of Optometry (ICO). “Besides starting a new adventure in the United States and learning what “American” cheese was, I was able to learn from some of the greatest educators in the business,” she noted. “All of these life experiences play a large role in the way I practice and teach today.” Her passion for academia was planted at ICO and flourished at Salus as a primary care resident at The Eye Institute. She joined Salus as an instructor in July 2014 and soon after was promoted to assistant professor. Two years later she assumed the role of director of On-Campus Residency Programs. “My passion continues to grow every day as a faculty member at Salus,” she said. “Our students and residents continue to push me to be the best I can be and fuel the fire to pass on the knowledge that so many have given me.” Although her career took an unexpected turn, Dr. Minhas lives for the “lightbulb” moments she experiences daily. “I grow personally and professionally from my time spent with students and residents – they help me be a better doctor, educator, and all around person,” she said. “They inspire me more than I inspire them!” Her teaching philosophy is one that is taught by example, as she believes this demonstrates the lifelong process of learning. “I hold my students to the highest standards and expect them to work diligently to unlock their full potential,” she noted. When asked how she’d like to be remembered, Dr. Minhas stated, “I hope students remember me as a hard-working, inspiring and entertaining faculty member.” According to this primate loving optometrist, “Jobs fill your pockets, but adventures fill your soul – enjoy the ride!”
“I grow personally and professionally from my time spent with students and residents – they help me be a better doctor, educator, and all around person. They inspire me more than I inspire them!” 4

CAITLYN FOY, DOT, MOTR/L INSTRUCTOR, COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND REHABILITATION – OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY Education and impact, in short, is why Caitlyn Foy decided to pursue a master’s degree in Occupational Therapy at Temple University. After receiving a higher education certificate and being an adjunct professor at Philadelphia University, she discovered Salus. The end result of this discovery was facilitating the development of the University’s Occuptional Therapy program from the ground up. The granddaughter of an Alzheimer’s patient, Dr. Foy personally witnessed the physical and emotional effects of the disease. “My grandparent’s hardship inspired me to find a way to help others,” she said. “I developed an interest in learning more about the healthcare system and mental health as a whole.” She became interested in Occupational Therapy, as it helps
patients faced with physical or mental injury, or emotional and developmental impairments regain a wide range of actions essential to daily life. Establishing expectations, understanding students’ needs, and being a content expert in her field is how Dr. Foy defines good teaching. She employs an interactive, team-based style of instruction, coupled with humor and wit, which she finds engages students and keeps them interested. “I try to remind them of the big picture, as it’s easy to feel the daily pressures due to assignments and exams,” she stated. “Because the instructors in the department come from a clinical background, we can relate our clinical
practice to classroom experience, which I find fuels student motivation.” “Just say yes,” are words Dr. Foy lives by. “It’s important to expose yourself to different experiences for personal and professional growth,” she noted. Her proudest, and very recent, personal accomplishment was presenting her doctoral thesis three weeks after giving birth to her first child. Dr. Foy is living proof that saying “yes” will bring about gratifying life experiences.
“I try to remind [my students] of the big picture … Because the instructors in the department come from a clinical background, we can relate our clinical practice to classroom experience, which fuels student motivation.” MARTIN PIENKOWSKI, PhD ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, OSBORNE COLLEGE OF AUDIOLOGY Inspired by curiosity and the natural world, Dr. Martin Pienkowski was interested in many things, but science became his main attraction while growing up. After attending the University of Toronto where he graduated with a double major in biology and physics, attending graduate school was an easy decision for him. The ear was the biophysical system on which he chose to focus. Upon earning his master’s degree and PhD, he conducted seven years of postdoctoral research at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and the University of Calgary in Canada.
to moderate levels of noise on the ear and auditory brain, as well as on the perception of sound, including the pathologies of tinnitus and hyperacusis. “My present work is focused on animal models (mainly mice) but I intend to branch out to study these topics in clinical populations,” he commented. According to Dr. Pienkowski, one cannot truly claim to understand a concept unless one has the ability to explain it to others. His advice to current and future students – “stay curious.”
Four years ago Dr. Pienkowski joined the University’s Osborne College of Audiology as an assistant professor, and currently instructs in the on-campus and distance education programs. Additionally, he maintains an active animal research lab and anticipates initiating collaborative clinical research in the near future. The history of science is full of fascinating discoveries and personalities. Dr. Pienkowski continues to be inspired by the intriguing lives of those pioneers. His current research efforts consist of investigating the long-term effects of exposure 5
A New Generation of Faculty Leaders (continued) KYOMI GREGORY, PhD, CCC-SLP ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND REHABILITATION – SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY A native of “The Big Apple” and former aspiring news anchor, Dr. Kyomi Gregory shifted professional gears upon completing a bachelor’s degree in Communication Disorders at the State University of New York at New Paltz. She earned her master’s in Speech Pathology at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, and upon graduation, worked primarily as a speech-language pathologist in the New York City public school system. Growing up as the daughter of a nurse and surrounded by a household of teachers, her family didn’t quite understand the role of the speechlanguage pathologist – they “just didn’t get it.” After being employed in the public school system for quite some time, she recognized her ability to educate others on the important roles in language and literacy. While submitting her tenure application for the New York City Department of Education, on a whim she decided to apply to PhD programs across the country. She received full funding
through the National Institutes of Health to attend Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. During her time there she focused on child language acquisition and assessment in culturally and linguistically diverse populations, specifically African American and southern white English. Upon graduating in December 2015, Dr. Gregory applied for an assistant professor position in Salus University’s Department of Speech-Language Pathology. According to her, the strong emphasis on both clinical experience and research capabilities were unique. “My background was focused in a clinical setting and my clinical experience drives my research,” she noted. “This position was the perfect fit for me – making the connection between both worlds.” Additionally, she was ready to put the humidity and rural environment behind her and get back to her roots – the big city feel. Recently Dr. Gregory has been exploring modern teaching methods, integrating technology and traditional
lecturing. “It’s important to bring new media into the classroom for students to stay focused and retain information,” she said. ”It’s also a great way to get them involved, as they are always using their iPads and various applications.” As her current research interests lie in cultural linguistically diverse populations, she believes cultural diversity is a major challenge in the speech-language profession. “The demographic of our nation is changing; there’s a push to drive differing cultures, bilingual populations, minorities, and even males to become speech-language pathologists,” she commented. According to Dr. Gregory, in order to reach personal goals you must “dare to be different”. “Fear cripples you from taking chances because you eventually think of every reason why something might not work, but what if it does,” she questioned with conviction. She is the perfect example that taking big risks and following your dreams paves the way for a bright future.
In order to reach personal goals, you must “dare to be different” … Taking big risks and following your dreams paves the way for a bright future.

Commencements and White Coat Ceremony
Excitement filled the air at Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center in late May as graduates, families, and friends gathered for the University’s 110th commencement ceremony. By the ceremony’s end, two PhD degrees (biomedicine); 29 AuD degrees; 157 OD degrees; 16 master’s degrees in BLVS (MS and MEd), five MPH, and 42 MSOT degrees had been awarded, along with 35 post-graduate Optometry Residency certificates. This year’s keynote speaker, Valerie Arkoosh, MD, MPH, vice chair of the Montgomery County (PA) Board of Commissioners, urged graduates to “grab your future and mold it,” reminding them to “lead their lives with intention.” The University’s fall commencement ceremony was held in early October at Congregation Keneseth Israel in Elkins Park. Family and friends attended in support of the 62 physician assistant studies, audiology, and blindness and low vision studies students who received their diplomas. The event provided students and spectators with an outstanding keynote address by Dr. Norvell V. Coots, president and CEO of Holy Cross Health. The annual White Coat ceremony held in November marked the induction of the matriculating class of optometry, audiology, physician assistant, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology students into the healthcare field. During the ceremony, program deans and directors bestowed students with their first white coat, signifying the beginning of their professional journey as they carry on the Salus tradition. In addition to deans, directors, and faculty, many family and friends were in attendance to celebrate the occasion. ALUMNI ASSOCIATION NEWS
by Jamie Lemisch, Alumni Relations director
ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE What does it mean to be an alumnus of Salus University? According to the dictionary, an alumnus is “someone who was a student at a particular school, college, or university”. What that doesn’t tell, is the whole story. It doesn’t make any reference to the responsibility or obligation of the alumnus to his/her educational institution. At Salus, we are very proud of our alumni. With every year, our numbers are growing, our academic programs are increasing and our alumni are making major changes in their respective professions.
of the University. With every opportunity, we should be in search of prospective students who have the ability to enhance our programs. In my private office, I display University admissions brochures and materials available for prospective students who visit. It’s a wonderful experience to speak to a high school or college student and communicate the benefits and advantages of healthcare and serving others. They are eager and grateful for information, advice and guidance.
Thanks to my education, I have been able to provide a comfortable life for my family, and have loved going to work each day – for 43 years and counting! I have earned a living helping others. I am grateful to have this meaning in my life, and feel indebted to the institution that gave me the skills and knowledge to make the past 43 years possible. So much so, that I feel it is my responsibility and obligation to give back. If you feel the same, I invite you to join me.
I invite those of you who also feel the same sense of obligation and responsibility to speak to your colleagues and young professionals – encourage and share with them your professional experiences. The Salus University admissions office is happy to send program information to keep at your fingertips. Have this information available and share it with any prospective students that may show interest. Offer them your knowledge and guidance through their application process. With personal attention like this, we can continue to improve our academic programs, and the Salus health network that our affiliation affords us.
At a recent Alumni Association board meeting, I urged and encouraged our alumni to spread the word. I expressed to our members that, as alumni, we have a responsibility to use our educational experience for the advancement

FALL 2016
REUNIONS AND ALUMNI RECEPTIONS The past alumni reunion celebrations in the spring, though lovely events, have not engaged as many alumni as we would like. In an effort to engage, acknowledge, and to make reunion celebrations more accessible to alumni, the University is going to try a new approach. Instead of hosting our traditional alumni weekend in the spring, we will be bringing the alumni festivities to professional meetings that generally are well attended by our alumni. At these professional meetings the alumni and friends receptions will be enhanced to include a celebration of five year reunion classes, as well as the presentation of the alumnus of the year awards. The professional meetings in 2017 where the University plans to have enhanced alumni gatherings are listed below. As the conference schedules are finalized the alumni office will provide the specifics of what the University has planned for alumni. 2017 American Academy of Audiology American Academy of Physician Assistants American Optometric Association AER International Conference

In Memoriam (continued) Remembering Alden Norman Haffner, OD ’52, PhD, FAAO (1928-2016) For over six decades, Alden Norman Haffner, OD ’52, was a pioneer in the advancement of public health and its integration into the profession of optometry and throughout the healthcare system. A former Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) faculty member, Dr. Haffner was a strong advocate for public health policy and education. In 1966, he developed and instructed the first semesterlong course in public health at PCO, which has since became the foundation for public health curricula and its inclusion in all schools of optometry as well as the National Board of Examiners in Optometry examination. Dr. Haffner was considered a visionary by many for his efforts, and has historically been referred to as a “legend of optometry”. Dr. Haffner was a leader in obtaining a charter for the establishment of the State College of Optometry under the support of the State University of New York (SUNY). In 1971, he became the founding dean and president of SUNY College of Optometry as well as an early leader in the movement to change optometry from solely vision care to an inclusive healthcare profession. After
his tenure as president of SUNY College of Optometry, Dr. Haffner was appointed vice chancellor for Research, Graduate Studies and Professional Programs for the entire State University of New York. A teacher, scholar, administrator, author and deeply committed public health champion, Dr. Haffner was a progressive leader, inspiring students and colleagues across the nation. In addition to his many roles, Dr. Haffner served as the executive director of the Optometric Center of New York (OCNY) – an organization which maintained a clinic and offered post graduate courses for optometrists. Dr. Haffner was awarded the AOA Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Optometry and inducted into the National Optometry Hall of Fame in 2000. Dr. Haffner dedicated a significant portion of his career to public health, serving as the president of the Public Health Association of New York City and receiving the coveted Haven Emerson Award. He served as the chair of the American Academy of Optometry’s Section on Public Health and Environmental Optometry and was appointed by President Ronald Regan to the Subcommittee Medical Advisory Group in the Department of Veteran’s
Affairs. Dr. Haffner founded NYC’s Community Family Planning Council, which provides low income families with access to healthcare. Dr. Haffner received multiple degrees and was admired by his alma mater, receiving the Troy R. Westmeyer Distinguished Alumni Award from NYU, and establishing the Dr. Alden N. Haffner Innovation Chair at SUNY Optometry – the university’s first endowed chair. In 2010, Salus University appointed Dr. Haffner as distinguished chair of its new Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program and created the Haffner Legacy Fund to support public health scholarships for optometry students in the MPH program. Dr. Haffner inspired many across the nation, and expects his friends, colleagues, and former students not to mourn his death, but to continue his groundbreaking work in optometry and public health. Donations to the Haffner Public Health Scholarship can be made at salus.edu/ donate or mailed to the Office of Institutional Advancement, 8360 Old York Road, Elkins Park, PA 19027.
Remembering an Optometric Warrior: John D. Robinson, OD ’54 (1926-2016) For more than a half century, John Duncan Robinson, OD ’54, was an influential and driving force for the profession of optometry from his home base in Wallace, North Carolina. For more than three decades Dr. Robinson testified throughout the country in support of therapeutic drug legislation similar to that enacted in 1977 in North Carolina, he remained actively involved in legislative affairs into his eighties, and was executive director of the North Carolina Board of Optometry until the time of his death. “Dr. John” was a force to be reckoned with and an unforgettable character. A US Navy veteran of World War II, Dr. Robinson graduated from Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) in 1954 and returned to his native North Carolina. There he began to see an urgent need for optometrists to be able to use the tools that up to that point were reserved for the traditional medical profession. By the time Dr. Robinson had been in practice for 10 years, the foundation for approaching the North Carolina legislature to make major changes in the Optometry Practice Act was being forged. Dr. Robinson was executive director of the North Carolina Board of Optometry until the time of his death. His long and illustrious career included memberships in many noteworthy 20
organizations such as the North Carolina State Optometric Society; American Optometric Association; Life Member, American Optometric Foundation, and Life Member, Association of Regulatory Boards in Optometry (formerly the International Association of Boards of Examiners in Optometry). He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Honor in May 1995 at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry 75th Anniversary celebration, and received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from PCO in 1999. The North Carolina State Optometric Society honored Dr. Robinson at the 25th Anniversary celebration of the enactment of its therapeutic drug law in 2002. They established the John D. Robinson Clinical Excellence Award, granted each year to the North Carolina optometrist showing “excellence in clinical practice and ophthalmic medicine.” Dr. Robinson was elected to the National Optometry Hall of Fame in 2006. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Robinson held a number of positions in professional organizations over the years. They included vice president of the North Carolina State Optometric Society, Department of Legislation (1957-69); an appointment to the North Carolina State Board of Examiners in Optometry (1964-90); Board member for the
Federation of the International Association of Boards of Examiners in Optometry from its inception, where he also served as Federation vice president, secretary/treasurer and president until his retirement in 1993. Dr. Robinson served a five-year term on the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBOE), and was secretary, vice president and, from 1987 to 1992, president. He is survived by his wife, Judith Hope King Robinson; sons, J. Daniel Robinson, OD, and Leslie Scott Robinson; daughter, Dee Anna R. Mott; stepson, Henry Pye, and their spouses; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

FALL 2016
Salus University Annual Report | 2015-2016 After many clinical and administrative roles at Salus and PCO, I am excited to now be leading the University’s development and communication departments. Through this new role, I look forward to strengthening the University’s ties with all of our graduates and our community and corporate partners. Our community of alumni and supporters continues to enrich the University in many ways – recommending excellent applicants, mentoring students from all of our programs and providing financial support to the institution. In the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2016, our partners, alumni and friends contributed a total of $783,677 for operating support as well as for special purposes. These gifts enable us to provide excellent educational programming, needed scholarship support for our students and exceptional healthcare services for the communities we serve. The University has also been fortunate to receive support for the renovation of its physical facilities. Over the next several years a number of significant campus improvements are planned, most notably the transformation of the library into a learning resource center, as well as the redesign and renovation of the optometry clinical skills lab. These important facility improvements will ensure that the University remains competitive in the recruitment and matriculation of quality students into all of our programs. We are grateful to two of our industry partners, Marco Ophthalmic and National Vision Inc. Each made commitments of $100,000 to support these projects. The 2015 Looking Out For Kids charity fundraiser, co-hosted by Rosemary Connors of NBC 10, was attended by 330 people and raised over $75,000 to provide vision care to economically disadvantaged children in our region. Hundreds of individual and corporate supporters, as well as local foundations have generously supported this University initiative. On behalf of the University I want to thank all of you whose contributions have enabled us to provide the highest quality health professions education, while ensuring a continued commitment to the communities we serve. Your generosity is central to our mission and success. On behalf of all of us at Salus, we appreciate your support and are grateful for your generosity.
