On July 1, faculty and students celebrated Salus Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 10 year anniversary

FROM PRESIDENT MIT TELMAN In our last issue, we celebrated the retirement and legacy of Dr. Lorraine Lombardi for her nearly 50 years of service to the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) and Salus. In May, the University unveiled the Elkins Park campus’ largest classroom in honor of her dedicated service to the institution. Similar to the high-quality educational experiences that were a norm for Dr. Lombardi, we are confident the Lombardi Classroom will help facilitate and even enhance educational experiences for our students. Our transitions continued in August, when we wished Dr. Janice Scharre, provost and vice president of Academic Affairs, a great retirement as she closed this chapter of her remarkable career. Dr. Scharre promoted and maintained a distinctive and steadfast academic vision for the University. Dr. Scharre’s leadership motivated those around her, providing Salus and its leaders the passion, drive and skills necessary in preparation for tough global challenges in an ever-changing academic atmosphere. The new year is always something to celebrate, and for PCO, Salus University’s founding College, 2019 marks its Centennial Anniversary. Established as the Pennsylvania State College of Optometry (our original name) as a nonprofit educational institution in 1919 to create a professional school of optometry on par with those of medicine and dentistry, Dr. Albert Fitch, PCO’s founder’s, desire set and maintained a higher standard of education, and is still evident today at Salus University. To mark this momentous occasion, our next Alumni Magazine will be a commemorative issue that we hope you will keep and enjoy for years to come. We certainly look forward to the next 100 years and hope you join us in celebrating as well.

On To Her Next Escapade A

nytime Dr. Janice Scharre travels, there is no doubt she has a murder mystery novel in hand. To further immerse herself in the fictional

world, she also loves to match her novels to her real — life destinations. It’s something her husband likes to poke fun at, and even Dr. Scharre finds humor in this trait, but she’s also quick to mention it helps her learn more about the cities and cultures she’s exploring. “I think it would be fun to own a bookstore,” she said. Dr. Scharre recently retired as the University’s provost and vice president of Academic Affairs, and moved to Northern Virginia to spend more quality time with her growing family. Undoubtedly, she will now have ample time to focus on the non-academic aspects of her life, but said she’ll miss the pace and the decision making of being provost, as well as her Salus colleagues. Previously a dean at the Illinois College of Optometry (ICO), Dr. Scharre first came to Salus as a consultant in 2012. At the time, she was tasked to design and develop the Accelerated Scholars

Program for the Pennsylvania College of Optometry Doctor of Optometry degree and prepare it for preliminary accreditation approval. The Scholars Program was the first of its kind in the country and is highly selective, offering enrolled students the opportunity to earn the credit equivalency of a traditional fouryear program in just three years. During that time, she also developed some of the academic standards and policies for the Department of International and Continuing Education. Upon the successful completion of these endeavors, she was drawn

to the opportunity of the provost role when it arose. “When I was a dean [at ICO] I enjoyed the aspects of faculty development, curriculum development, and patient-related issues,” she said. “What drew me to the provost role here [at Salus] was that it wasn’t just an optometry program, but it was a University that offered similar healthcare profession programs that would broaden my understanding particularly in higher education.” Once she came on board as provost, Dr. Scharre wasted no time. She laid the groundwork for expanding faculty

Feature development which has allowed faculty to have more opportunities to attend conferences throughout the country. In her earliest days in the role, she shared her plans with her colleague, and friend, Susan Oleszewski, OD ‘76, MA. Dr. Oleszewski was a bit skeptical, and told Dr. Scharre some of the policies might only be accomplished “when pigs fly.” Soon after, in good humor, a flying pig figurine appeared in her office. Over the years, colleagues added to the growing collection lining her windowsill. She looks at them now as a reminder of all that she has accomplished in her time at Salus, of which has not gone unnoticed. “Since her appointment as our vice president of academic affairs and provost in 2014, Jan has actively promoted and maintained a distinctive and steadfast academic vision for the

University,” said Salus president, Michael H. Mittelman, OD ‘80, FAAO. “Working tirelessly, she played a pivotal role in stabilizing and enhancing our academic programs by ensuring a disciplined approach to planning and execution, a strategic focus on all decision making, increased academic rigor and ensured assessment which is a core component for each of our programs.” Colleagues who worked alongside Dr. Scharre came to the same conclusion — she brought a sustained and consistent balance to the provost’s office as both an advocate for the faculty and students alike. “She is tough when necessary, but is always fair and has advanced the University’s mission by building consensus,” said Brian Zuckerman, the University’s chief of staff. “Together we tried to eliminate administrative red tape in order to accomplish

goals large and small. What I will miss most are our talks ranging from dealing with the issue of the day to contemplating the future of Salus.” Four years ago, she was a firm believer in the collaborative education model and wanted to build on its widely regarded strength in clinical training. Dr. Scharre’s work has made programs, once siloed, work with one another seamlessly toward the University’s goal of increased interdisciplinary training and education. While great progress has been made in this area, she still believes there is an opportunity for growth. Her wish list as her time at Salus ended was easy: an expansion of the programs offered for prospective students and continual faculty development. In this new chapter in her life, Dr. Scharre plans on golfing more — though she claims she isn’t very good — and wants to enjoy mowing the lawn. Yes, lawn. She and her husband will be traveling more frequently — with a matching murder mystery book in hand — and perhaps she’ll one day open a bookstore of her own.

Flexibility is Key: The Function of The Lombardi Classroom 8

Feature still lingers in the air in the newly renovated classroom space on the third floor south building of the University’s main Elkins Park campus. The furniture is in pristine condition and the windows that line an entire side of each room are glistening. What were once two individual, separate classrooms now can also be used as one large space, known as the Lombardi Classroom. Earlier this year, the University unveiled the campus’ largest classroom in honor of Lorraine Lombardi, PhD for her dedicated service to both the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) and Salus. “The naming of this classroom acknowledges and gives testament to Dr. Lombardi’s lasting legacy at Salus and PCO and dedication to thousands of students and professionals who have been privileged to witness her energy and passion for teaching, and to her colleagues who are most fortunate to call her a friend,” said Michael H. Mittelman, OD ’80, MPH, FAAO, Salus president. More than a year in the making, at the start of the 2018-2019 academic year, programs and classes started using the room. Funds for the project were generously donated by members of Dr. Lombardi’s family and through Dr. Lombardi’s “Final Farewell Tour” — a series of final continuing education lectures from Dr. Lombardi along with prominent faculty and other members of the optometry community — all spearheaded by Susan Oleszewski, OD ’76, MA, FAAO, a colleague and close friend of Dr. Lombardi. Amie Leighton, the University’s in-house manager for all facilities and physical plant projects, was tasked with the Lombardi Classroom just weeks after she started working at Salus. The challenge was to make the space useable for a class that includes all programs or up to 300 students, but also flexible enough for smaller classes to utilize the space without

Feature feeling engulfed by the expanse of the room. Leighton and her team settled on a plan that required structural re-arranging of the orientation and amphitheaterstyle tiering of one side so it could blend well with the other when combined. In order not to lose valuable classroom space for the entire year of construction, the project was completed in two phases. Phase one began on February 22. During this time, one classroom was under construction while the second continued to house

classes. Phase two started when the first classroom or half of the larger space was complete and classes switched to the new side so the second phase could commence. While the new technology in the classroom is obvious with 14 screens for easy viewing of lectures or presentations, some of the most important aspects of the room may very well be hidden to the untrained eye. For instance, when the rooms join together, the podiums can move toward the center — all while staying connected

with a retractable wire from the floor that can also be clipped into a wire holder along the wall to hide the wires when they are extended. “Those are the kinds of things that add to the complexity of creating a space such as this,” said Leighton. To ensure the flexibility of the space, sound-resistant removable walls were installed between the classrooms. The walls fold back within 15 minutes, and slide into hidden pockets when they are not expanded. Even the furniture was selected specifically for the functionality of the room. Separately, one side of the classroom has lecture seating and tables in the front to allow for group work; while the other only has lecture seating. “I was a little worried that we were trying to cram too much into the space,” Leighton said. But the Lombardi Classroom had its first test with the dedication ceremony, when only half of the space was completed, and it passed with flying colors. More recently, classes began to be held in the new space with much success. The Lombardi Classroom passed its final and biggest test of hosting orientation, which was previously held in the Hafter Center’s gymnasium, for the entire incoming class. Classes and presentations of all sizes have been held in the classroom since its completion. As for the final product, “We have done what we had hoped to do,” Leighton said. A lesser-known part of the project was also updating another classroom next door. While it wasn’t structurally updated, it was redesigned to be a collaborative classroom space. It can hold up to 50 people and has tables that can be reconfigured as needed. It also has five monitors displayed on the walls designed specifically for group work and they can project a presentation in unison or independently of one another. This room is a different learning environment that doesn’t exist anywhere else on campus.

SALUS UNIVERSIT Y MAINTAINS a legacy that began 100 years ago in Philadelphia when our founding College, the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO), was initially established by Dr. Albert Fitch. Considered a visionary by his peers and a revolutionary by others in the healthcare community, Dr. Fitch’s goal in establishing the Pennsylvania State College of Optometry (our original name) as a nonprofit educational institution in 1919 was to create a professional school of optometry comparable to those of medicine and dentistry. His desire was to “obtain a higher standard of proficiency and to enlighten the public mind on the subject and science of optometry and its relationship to the conservation of vision.” That desire to set and maintain a higher standard of education is evident today at Salus University, where the institution continues to break new ground with creative and innovative curricula for all of its degree programs. We continue to push the envelope in health science education while adhering to our central principles built upon Dr. Fitch’s ideals: a commitment to interprofessional education and interdisciplinary training; a primary care philosophy and holistic approach that assess the whole patient for prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation; and an exceptional clinical training sequence that begins in the very first semester of study are just a few of the University’s principles intertwined in the curriculum every day. The name Salus University may still be young, however, the history and reputation of our founding institution — the Pennsylvania College of Optometry — is known and respected around the world. Changes in the nation’s healthcare delivery system are significantly altering every facet of our diversified medical and health science professions. Central to the Salus mission is keeping pace with the rapidly expanding healthcare issues, setting national trends and standards and being the leader in providing the nation’s

top health science and education and rehabilitation professionals. This past July we celebrated 10 years as a University. Since becoming a University in 2008, Salus has blossomed as a multifaceted health professions University through additional programs, enhanced facility renovations, and increased partnerships. To celebrate this milestone, luncheons were held for faculty and staff; young alumni celebrated at a fun reception at Yards Brewing Co., and commemorative posters were signed, leaving their own mark on history. The celebrations continue throughout 2019, as celebratory activities for PCO’s centennial anniversary will be in full swing. Launched in May, with a plethora of information to read and photography to view is the commemorative centennial website. With features on alumni, students, past presidents, and notable historic moments that have occurred over the course of PCO and the University’s history, there’s plenty to learn about the first 100 years of the institution’s existence. And what’s a celebration without a party? Be sure to save the date and RSVP for the Centennial Gala on April 27, 2019 at the Hilton Penn’s Landing, in Philadelphia. It will be a great celebration as we honor the first 100 years of our founding institution.

Commitment to Community

SUPPORT GOES A LONG WAY W

hen the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) became Salus University ten years ago, a promise was made to continue to improve

the welfare of the public worldwide. True to its name, which is Latin for health and well-being, Salus believes in an interprofessional and holistic approach to this endeavor. So when the idea of support groups for the public-at-large first came to fruition within the University’s SpeechLanguage Pathology (SLP) program, it was met with great enthusiasm as another way to engage with the community and integrate it into the students’ curriculum. There are currently eleven support groups hosted by the Speech-Language Institute (SLI), the program’s clinical facility that provides a wide range of pediatric and adult assessment intervention services, that students in the SLP program help facilitate as part of their curriculum. The genesis of the support groups focused on fluency related issues, strategies and techniques — one group each for adults and children. Both an affiliate of and supported by the National Stuttering Association (NSA) — a non-profit organization dedicated to

bringing together children and adults who stutter through support, education, advocacy, and research — the groups meet the first and third Wednesdays of every month. Not all of the support groups are for those living with communication disorders. However, some are related to social support or professional development — Raise Your Voice is one of those. Here, transgender individuals who recently transitioned, focus on using the appropriate pitch of their voice, how to hold their body and use appropriate hand gestures that match their new identity. As part of their clinical training, SLP students clearly enjoy facilitating the groups and the success is two-fold for both them and their clients. Jackie Katzev ‘19SLP organized the Speakeasy group, which is for those

recovering from a laryngectomy procedure — the total or partial removal of the larynx. “Working with this support group has significantly enhanced my understanding of various diagnoses and therapeutic interventions associated with laryngectomies,” she said. She believes the group has been phenomenal in the healing process for clients as well. “Ultimately, I believe that human beings simply want to be understood by others, and it brings comfort to know that there is someone out there who understands one’s inner complexities,” she said. “Working with the support groups helps the students balance their expectations of their clients,” said Robert Serianni, MS, CCC-SLP, clinical director of SLI. During a therapy session, students don’t necessarily hear all the daily concerns, worries, and other factors that happen outside of the session, which

can impact whether or not the client is able to complete the assignments prepared by the student. However, when the students participate in the support group environment, they are also exposed to another side of a client’s life. This was the case for Jill Painter ‘19SLP, who reflected on her time with the Fluency support group. “The group is a great resource for people to discuss their feelings and receive reliable information from speechlanguage pathologists,” she said. “It was an eye-opening experience to learn how stuttering affects people’s lives on a daily basis and it taught me how important it is to make the therapy specific to a client, and how much a support group can improve someone’s quality of life.” Peer support groups are a critical and effective strategy for ongoing health and sustained behavior change for people with chronic diseases and other conditions. Support groups provide opportunities for individuals to share personal experiences and feelings, coping strategies, or firsthand

information about diseases or treatments and fills the gap between medical treatment and the need for emotional support. Overall, studies have found social support: • decreases mortality rates • increases knowledge of a disease • improves self-efficacy • improves self-reported health status and self-care skills, including medication adherence SLI’s support groups are continually built as the community needs them. The newest groups — Teenage Social Skills — with a focus on building social skills for teenagers with autism — and a group affiliated with the Parkinson’s Voice Project® are new to the program’s repertoire. Also on the docket is a group to support caregivers of individuals with dementia. With these eleven support groups, Salus continues to live up to its name and truly takes on a whole-health approach.

University News Twelfth Annual Looking Out for Kids

The University’s twelfth annual Looking Out for Kids (LOFK) charity fundraiser was hosted at the Hilton Philadelphia City Avenue on Saturday, November 3. Emmy-winning NBC10 news anchor and reporter Rosemary Connors co-hosted the evening and Donna Frisby-Greenwood, president and CEO of The Fund for the School District of Philadelphia, was honored as the 2018 Lighthouse Award recipient. All funds raised help provide vision care services and eyeglasses to underprivileged children in Philadelphia and its surrounding communities. LOFK has newly expanded its reach to support children’s audiology services.

On Thursday, May 24, graduates saw their perseverance and sacrifices pay off as they received their diplomas at commencement, held at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. This was the largest graduation class in PCO and Salus University’s history, with more than 350 graduates. It was also the first time the Occupational Therapy Doctorate program was included in graduation.

Commencement Speaker, Dr. Lorraine Lombardi, delivered one last talk, before retiring, to the graduates and focused on embracing change. During the speech, Dr. Lombardi threw in one more reference to a neurology concept, as one of her last gifts, to which the crowd laughed. She concluded with things that have not changed such as working hard, to always continue to be a student, and reminded everyone to practice what they learned when they were five — which is to give love.

Salus University Celebrates 10 Years On July 1, Salus University celebrated its tenth anniversary. Founded as the Pennsylvania State College of Pennsylvania (PSCO), the institution operated as the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) until it was granted university status by the Pennsylvania Department of Education on January 31, 2008. The official name change to Salus University occurred on July 1, 2008.

Fall Commencement At the 115th commencement, the University bestowed doctoral and master’s degrees in the professions of Physician Assistant Studies, Audiology, Blindness and Low Vision Studies, Biomedicine, Occupational Therapy, Public Health and Clinical Optometry with an International Advanced Studies certificate. During the ceremony, Dr. Scharre was presented with an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree, joining a short list of just 58 other distinguished recipients to be awarded this degree by the University since 1963.

White Coat Ceremony More than 300 new students attended the University’s White Coat ceremony on Friday, August 17 at the Kimmel Center. The audience was filled with proud relatives, friends, faculty, staff and alumni as they watched their loved ones receive the white coat — a symbol of the transition from student to professionals-in-training. Recipients from all of the University’s clinical programs, including Optometry, Audiology, Physician Assistant Studies, Occupational Therapy, and Speech-Language Pathology take part in the ceremony each year. Once in their new white coats, the students recite their Oath to Professionalism which also symbolizes a step in their professional journey. The same oath will be taken again once the students graduate and commence their post-graduate educational experiences.

New Articulation Agreements During the month of May and into early June, Salus University completed six new articulation agreements with three local colleges and universities — Messiah College, Drexel University College of Medicine, and La Roche College. The new agreements provide a clear indication that Salus continues to expand as it celebrates its ten years of University status and upcoming 100 years since the establishment of its founding college, Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO).

Salus Scoop This year’s scoop had an exceptional turnout. Held at the Hafter Student Center, this year’s theme was “A Day at the Library”. Each student organization tried to outdo one another with decorated tables to align with the theme. The Private Practice Club won best booth with a Willy Wonka décor decked-out with candy and colorful signs in conjunction with more information about the club.

HIGHEST NBEO SCORE Meghan Thompson ‘19OD achieved the highest National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO®) Part I Applied Basic Science Examination score nationally. In achieving the highest score among her class, Thompson also received the Dr. Norman E. Wallis Award for Excellence — established to honor Dr. Wallis and his 25 years of phenomenal service as the executive director of the NBEO. Dr. Wallis was also the Pennsylvania College of Optometry’s president from 1972 to 1979.

THE AURICLE Osborne College of Audiology MASTER’S IN CLINICAL AUDIOLOGY Radhika Aravamudhan, PhD, dean of the Osborne College of Audiology (OCA), and Girija Sundar, PhD, assistant professor launched OCA’s first cohort of Master’s in Clinical Audiology program for international audiology practitioners in efforts to raise the level of education for practicing audiologists. OCA launched the International Master’s in Clinical Audiology program in the spring. In several parts of the world, the entry level degree to practice Audiology is a bachelor’s degree in speech and hearing.

AUDIOLOGY LEARNING EXPERIENCE Ten prospective audiology students from New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland arrived on the Elkins Park campus on Thursday, June 7 for a tour and exploration of the University’s Audiology program during the second annual Audiology Learning Experience (ALE). The academic and career-related two-day session created by the University’s Office of Admissions gives prospective students an in-depth look at the audiology profession.

Nine Physician Assistant Studies (PA) students and faculty volunteered with both PA students and faculty from Hofstra University for four days in the Darién province of Panama in August as part of the Medical Brigades program — with the purpose to support the development of sustainable community health and provide monitoring and guidance. Students practiced their clinical skills, learned about global public health issues, and further developed their cultural competence on the trip.

For the first time, the Physician Assistant Studies (PA) Long White Coat Ceremony — a special time for PA students when they receive their professional white coats — was held in conjunction with the presentation of the PA Alumna of the Year Award Celebration on the evening of Wednesday, October 10.

Conference Updates AudiologyNOW! Conference The American Academy of Audiology (AAA) held its annual AudiologyNOW! meeting in Nashville, Tenn., April 18–21 at the Music City Center to celebrate the academy’s 30th anniversary. The Osborne College of Audiology (OCA) was also well represented with presentations from Radhika Aravamudhan, PhD, dean of OCA; Rebecca Blaha, AuD ’07, instructor; Bre Myers, AuD ‘06, PhD’ 17, assistant professor; and Jonette Owen, AuD ’03, assistant professor. Dr. Owen received the Blue-Ribbon Excellence Award for her poster, Vetting Process of Off-Campus Clinical Sites: The First Step to a Higher Level of Clinical Education. American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) New Orleans, La., may be known for its parties and celebrations but a team of five from the University’s Physician Assistant Studies (PA) program were not there to party; they were there to compete nationally with other PA students across the country in the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) Challenge Bowl, during the AAPA conference held May 18–23. This year’s team was made up of three primary members Alex Gothier, MMS ‘18; Erik Baish, MMS ‘18; and Kalley Veit, MMS ‘18. There were two alternate members as well, class president Michael Guerriere, MMS ’18; and Bridget Gallaher, MMS ‘18. David A. Smith, PA-C, assistant professor was the faculty sponsor for the team.

American Optometric Association (AOA) Many from the University’s Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) attended the American Optometric Association (AOA)’s annual Optometry’s Meeting®, held June 20–24 in Denver, Colo. Celeste Gomez ‘19OD represented Salus PCO during the Essilor Optometric Student Bowl™, the national quiz bowl competition for optometry students. She made PCO proud as she competed up to the final round during the exciting event. Gomez won the 2017 PCO Quiz Bowl, which secured her spot in the national competition this year.

Pen Del AER Conference Four Blindness and Low Vision Studies faculty members attended the Pennsylvania-Delaware Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (Penn-Del AER) Conference in late April. Three of the four faculty members presented. There was also a poster presentation from two faculty members and four Low Vision Rehabilitation students. The Alumni and Friends Reception was held on April 25 was well attended, including Barbara Schwartz-Bechet, MS, EdD, interim dean, College of Education and Rehabilitation.

Alumni News ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Alumni, In the years since my wife and I both graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 2002, there has been tremendous growth and change in the institution. The most obvious of which is the name change to Salus University. Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, Salus fosters a philosophical approach to healthcare delivery that encourages respect and collaboration across specialties. Under the umbrella of Salus, the growth and changes that have occurred are nuanced and significant, making our fellow graduates better practitioners and healthcare team members. The nationwide conversation on interprofessionalism acknowledges that outcomes can be improved through team-based care and coordination across specialties. With nine specialties offered at Salus University, the students’ educational experience is enriched. In the first year of study at Salus, students from all programs jointly participate in Interprofessional Evidence-Based Practice, a course where clinical problem solving skills are taught. This early interaction with other professions allows our more recent graduates to see themselves as members of a larger healthcare team and better understand and appreciate their colleagues. As collaboration between medical specialties continues to grow, these graduates will surely contribute to the innovation of healthcare delivery. As alumni from a different era, we can benefit from staying connected and involved. Through our engagement, we can help create new opportunities for collaboration and education, patient referrals, professional networking and more. 2000s Jill B. Meltzer, AuD ’01, is one of six new board of directors for the American Tinnitus Association. Dr. Meltzer is an audiologist with North Shore Audio-Vestibular Lab in Highland Park, Ill. Adam Parker, OD ’02, was recognized as Virginia’s 2018 Optometrist of the Year. Dr. Parker is married to Megan E. (Shenkle) Parker, OD ’01. Diane E. Calderon, OD ’03, has accepted a position as chief of the primary care service at SUNY Optometry University Eye Center. Working along with SUNY Optometry’s Office of Residency Education, she founded the first OD/MD optometric residency in the State of New York. Lori Gray, OD ’04, celebrated 10 years of serving the New Haven community at her private practice, Complete Family Eyecare. Since opening her private practice in 2008, she has doubled the size of her office space from 2,424-square-feet to 4,848-square-feet. Her staff now includes four doctors (with a fifth to be added), and two specialists that come to the practice twice a month. Her practice includes eight exam rooms (a ninth soon to be added), an on-site optical lab, optical department and dry eye center. Lisa Ann Perhacs, AuD ’04, wrote an article that appeared on thirdage. com, about the difficulties of living with single-sided hearing loss and the latest technology to help people with this condition. Dr. Perhacs is a Clinical Education Specialist for Sivantos, Inc. Mindy K. Brudereck, AuD ’05, was featured in ontap — an online magazine — for her successful audiology practices in Birdsboro and Wyomissing, Pa. The focus of the audiology practices is to accurately diagnose and address the unique hearing needs of everyone who comes in for service.

(Adamczyk) Campbell, OD ’08, and her husband Alexander Campbell welcomed another daughter, Vienna Pauline Campbell, in the fall 2017. She joins her big sisters Ava Rose, 5 and Kaia Helen, 2. Andrea M. Bates, AuD ’09, has been recognized in the Business Briefs section of The Register Citizen in Torrington, Conn., as the audiologist in her community to provide the latest in audiology services and technology at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Ear, Nose & Throat. Dr. Bates is currently using Otoacoustic Emissions testing of the inner ear which is used on difficult to test patients, pediatrics and newly identified hearing loss in patients. Sandra Miller, AuD ’09, and her colleagues at, Complete Hearing in Lincoln, Neb. were acknowledged as the KFOR Business of the Week. Dr. Miller’s practice aims to help people of all ages and lifestyles achieve a better quality of life through better hearing.

1990s Maria Higgins, OD ’97, cousin of Michael P. Higgins, OD ’03, started a travel blog documenting her adventures in providing services as a remote optometrist in the bush of Alaska for

underserved Alaskan natives. She also travels throughout Maryland providing nursing home eye care to elderly citizens who do not have mobility or means of transportation to travel to an optometry clinic for vision care. Follow her blog at www.drmariahiggins.com.

1980s Robert L. Owens, OD ’80, was presented with a Citation of Recognition from the House of Representatives for being the Pennsylvania Optometrist of the Year. Dr. Owens is pictured with Rebecca L. Wincek-Bateson, OD ’03, current Pennsylvania Optometric Association president. Joseph Audia, OD ’83, was granted the Jefferson Award by WDTV News, Channel 5 in Salem, W.Va. Dr. Audia is a practitioner and patient advocate. Mike Johnson, OD ’83, was re-appointed to another five year term to the North Carolina Board of Examiners in Optometry by Governor Roy Cooper. Dr. Johnson is currently serving his second year as President of the Board of Examiners. He practices in Rocky Mount, N.C. Samuel A. Berne, OD ’84, was recognized with the 2018 Best Eye Health Blog Award by Healthline. Dr. Berne has been in private practice in New Mexico for over 30 years where he works with patients to improve their vision and overall wellness through holistic methods. In addition to this recognition, he was also awarded The Special Awards for Service from the Behavioral Optometrists in Mexico for his innovative and holistic work with children. Class Notes Georgia K. Crozier, OD ’84, MS ’87, is utilizing artificial intelligence technology to allow patients who are blind to see. The device attaches to an individual’s glasses and operates with hand commands when the individual points to an object. It recognizes features of different kinds of products and then speaks them into words into an earpiece worn by the patient. It can recognize money, objects, read mail and books, and even has a facial recognition component. The device is currently available in the Philadelphia area. Dr. Crozier is a legacy alumna whose family includes: mother Gilda C. Crozier, OD ’43, father George H. Crozier, OD ’49, uncle John J. Crozier, OD ’48, and daughter Catena M. Crozier-Fitzgerald, OD ’14. David R. McPhillips, OD ’85, won a silver medal in men’s doubles Pickleball at the Keystone State Games, Pa.’s largest sports festival. Hundreds of athletes competed to determine who will represent Pennsylvania in the National Games in Albuquerque, N.M., to be held June 2019. Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the United States, with over three million people of all ages playing around the country. Good luck Dr. McPhillips!

1970s David L. Schmolly, OD ’70, is retiring after serving the New Castle community in Pennsylvania for 47 years. He is handing over the reins to Rachel L. Carver, OD ’13 who has been seeing about 80 percent of the patients for the past two years and has been well received. Looking ahead, Dr. Schmolly foresees violin lessons and leisurely vacations in his future.

1960s Errol G. Rummel, OD ’65, was recently selected as the Latin percussionist and “color” percussionist for the Sharp Tones, a New Jersey Motown/Doowop band. During the day, he still practices at his medically-oriented optometric practice, in Jackson, N.J., directs the Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation and Visual Perception Clinic at the Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation in Pomona, N.J., and consults in an ophthalmology practice as their Neuro-Optometrist.

Irving Bennett, OD ’44, wrote an article featured in the Hindsight: Journal of Optometry History Vol. 49, #2, publication titled, “Optometrists Who Led “Double Lives”. In Memoriam WITH SORROW, THE UNIVERSIT Y NOTES THE PASSING OF

1940s David Brezel, OD ’43, longtime resident and optometrist from South Philadelphia, died peacefully at home in Kailua, Hawaii on July 29, 2018 at the age of 98. He had a very active optometric practice in Philadelphia on South Broad Street for 30 years. Dr. Brezel attended the Pennsylvania College of Optometry during World War II. The textbook in anatomy was printed in England and therefore unavailable in the U.S. due to war restrictions. As a result, he volunteered to make a series of 14 large format charts of the anatomy of the eye. These charts were so accurate that they were displayed in the lab at PCO and used in classes for the next 30 years. He was so impressed with the sign in the anatomy lab that read “Here is where the dead teach the living” that he willed his body to the local medical school, wherever he lived, for teaching purposes. Dr. Brezel is survived by his second wife of 52 years, Margaret; son Michae; daughter Laura and daughter-in-law; nephew Frank; niece Bonnie; and nephew Bruce. His first wife, Mathilda Brill, and their daughter Rhea preceded him in death. David Peltan, OD ’43, passed away on March 1, 2018 at the age of 97. Dr. Peltan treated

patients in Philadelphia for five decades. After graduating from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, he enlisted in the Army Medical Corps during World War II. He enjoyed talking about history and politics and was also an avid lover of classical music and regularly attended Philadelphia Orchestra concerts. He was widowed by wife, Doris (1976) and then after remarrying, widowed again by former wife, Leslie (2012); and son, Mark. He is survived by his children, Nancy, Stephen, and Howard; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Bernard Feldman, OD ’49, passed away on March 8, 2018. Dr. Feldman served his country as an Army-Air Force veteran in World War II. He was a founding member of Temple Emanu-El in Westfield, N.J. He was also a member of the Masonic Order in New Jersey, the New Jersey and American Optometric Associations, and the Westfield Tennis Club. He was a fervent world-wide skier and a New York Marathon runner for fifteen years. He is survived by his wife, Melvina; children, Jeff, Douglas (Joyce), Barbara, Debra (Joe), Caryn (Scott), and Mark (Nerissa); grandchildren, Brad, Alyssa, Avery, Mitchell, Megan, Grayson, and Dylan; and one great grandchild, Amiya.

1950s Clifford C. Wagner, OD ’51, passed away on May 1, 2018 at the age of 90. Dr. Wagner served his country as a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. He was a former member of the Pennsylvania Medical Advisory Board; and a member of the Berks County, Pennsylvania and American Optometric Associations for 50 years, serving in numerous capacities. Dr. Wagner is survived by his son, Jeffrey, step granddaughter, Diane N. Salnicky, brother-in-law, Richard Allwein, nieces and nephews; and his canine granddog, I.C. Gabriel G. Gregory, OD ’52, passed away on April 4, 2018 at the age of 95. Dr. Gregory served his country in World War II and survived the Battle of the Bulge as part of the 11th Armored Division. He was a founding and active member of Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church as well as a member of the American Hellenic Educations Progressive Association (AHEPA). He was a 32nd degree Mason and a proud member of Harmony Lodge #19. He was also a member of American Legion Post #129, the Toms River Elks Club, past president of the Toms River Lions Club and a former Cub Scout Pack Leader. He is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years; sons,

Glen and Cary; daughter-inlaw, Janet; and grandchildren, Nicholas, Katherine, and Grant. David Z. Cone, OD ’54, passed away on March 25, 2018, who was the nephew of Jackson M. Weber, OD ’35. Dr. Cone was a life long member of the New Jersey Society of Optometric Physicians and member of the American Optometric Association since 2002. He is preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey and brother, Lawrence. He is survived by his wife, Frances; daughter Hope (David); grandchildren, Sydney and Zachary; and sister, Susan. Daniel J. Griffin, Jr., OD ’54, passed away on June 17, 2018 at the age of 87. Dr. Griffin practiced optometry for 47 years in two office locations in Lehigh Valley, Pa. In Memoriam Abby, and Michael, and four grandchildren. Daniel J. Bridy, OD ’58, passed away on January 16, 2018 at the age of 82. Dr. Bridy served his country and was a Korean War veteran. He cared for patients for more than forty years and maintained an optometric practice in Shamokin, Pa., the lower anthracite region. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Optometric Association, Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis and Elks Club of Shamokin. He was an enthusiastic reader and a great student of history. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Mary Lou; children, Kate (Michael), Daniel, Marie (Marty), and Joseph (Mia); sister, Marie; grandchildren, Conal and Maggie. Robert A. Poksay, OD ’58, passed away on March 8, 2018. Dr. Poksay was a member of NJSOP and AOA for 54 years. He served active duty for 11 years in the U.S. Army and 19 years in the Air National Guard before retiring as Lt Col. U.S. Air Force in 1988. He was the founder of the Eye Referral Center in Voorhees, N.J. and was past president of SJ/ Military Officers Association of America (MOAA). He received numerous awards and was a member of many organizations such as: American Academy of Optometry, American Legion-Woodbury, American Optometric Association, Delaware National Guard Assoc., Disabled American Veterans-Glassboro, Gloucester County Veterans Advisory Council, the Interlens Group (International

Frank B. Day, OD ’59, passed away on February 25, 2018 at the age of 85. Dr. Day served his country in the military in the Korean conflict as a Military Police and Mess Sgt. He advanced in the profession of optometry and held offices at the local, regional, state, national, and international levels. He served as president of the local association, the North Carolina Assoc. of Optometrists and the Southern Council of Optometrists (representing the 12 southern states). He served as the President of the State Board of Examiners, the National Board of Examiners, and the International Board of Examiners. He also served outside of his profession and was a Scoutmaster of Troop 214 for 20 years. He received numerous prestigious awards during his time as an Eagle Scout for more than 50 years, such as Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, Vigil Order of the Arrow, and Silver Beaver, just to name a few. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth M. Day, OD ’77; two sons,

1970s Marty E. Silidker, OD ’71, passed away in January 2018, and was the brother of Steven A. Silidker, OD ’69. Anthony L. McConnell Jr., OD ’72, passed away on October 10, 2018 at the age of 72. he will be remembered for the kind and gentle manner he treated his patients and his willingness to always fill in for fellow optometrists when they needed a hand. Matthew J. Zeiler, OD ’76, passed away on June 18, 2018 at the age of 79. Dr. Zeiler ran a private practice in Lyndhurst, N.J., where he was devoted to his patients for more than thirty years. He loved helping others, skiing, sailing, humor and theater. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gail and is survived by his children, Michelle and Michael.

2000s Denise T. Prislupski, AUD ’02, passed away on September 29, 2018. She was the owner of Audiology and Hearing Centers of NEPA for two years. Dr. Prislupski helped patients by making house calls, being involved with the local Lions Clubs in their hearing aid program, and was part time employed at the Scranton School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children. She won Best Audiologist of NEPA award numerous times. Linh M. Quach, OD ’07 passed away on February 16, 2018. Dr. Quach was married to Aung-zaw Phoo, OD ’04. Naomi M. Sussman, MS ’12 passed away on May 26, 2018 at the age of 63.

Salus University 2017-2018 Annual Report It’s been a pleasure over the last year to become acquainted with many in the Salus community including alumni, faculty, staff, friends, trustees and corporate partners. During my time here, I have been honored to experience many events and services that make Salus special. I’ve also had the opportunity to be examined at The Eye Institute (TEI) and the Pennsylvania Ear Institute (PEI). As a result, I have a greater appreciation for our various health professions and the services we provide to the community. What stands out the most is that we have a world-class institution that produces world-class health professionals as a result of outstanding faculty and staff. This past year, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of Salus University with employees at both TEI and the Elkins Park campus. As we wrap up the 10th Anniversary of Salus University, we have also been preparing to celebrate and recognize the 100th anniversary of our founding college, the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. I’d like to thank you for the continual financial support of all sizes that you provide the University. It is the support our alumni like you provide that is critical and central to our ability to continue a legacy of excellence in professional health education. This year, donors pledged $187,000 to the dedication of the Lombardi Classroom, and we received an estate gift of over $180,000 from an alumnus of class of 1952. The classroom is a great addition to the Elkins Park campus and will ensure that Dr. Lombardi’s

legacy continues on. Our 2017 Looking Out For Kids charity event was again extremely successful in raising over $100,000 for our pediatric outreach programs providing vision care services and eye glasses to hundreds of children in Philadelphia, Norristown, Abington, Cheltenham and Chester. We are also grateful to have received an estate gift through a charitable remainder trust of over $180,000 from an alumnus from the class of 1952. This is the perfect time to pause and appreciate how far we’ve come and more importantly, it’s also an opportunity to plan and implement strategic initiatives for the future. As we look ahead to the next year and embark upon the University’s Centennial Campaign, we must aim higher, deeper, broader, wider and with greater purpose. I would like to thank you in advance for supporting the Centennial Campaign
