TEMPERATURE TECH
Artilect baselayers

My favourite new piece of ultra-high-tech materials science this month came from new technical clothing brand Artilect.
It got me thinking about all the technology we can use today to manage our personal temperature in order to perform our best.
Coming from Colorado, USA, Artilect is a team of designers and explorers who are interested in pushing the limits of what fabrics can do. The A/SYS baselayer I’ve been using this winter is made of Nuyarn, a new sustainable and durable formulation of Merino wool, which thermoregulates the body for maximum sporting performance and year-round versatility.
It dries five times quicker, is 50% more durable, uses 30% less raw materials and maintains amazing stretch and softness for comfort. It also helps that the styling and colours look so good.

Core Body Tech sensors
Of course, if you’re to truly understand the impact of temperature on human performance, you’re going to need data. Lots of it. And this is what the pros use. If the Swiss-made CORE Body Temperature Sensor is good enough for the Grenadier, Bora Hansgrohe and Quick-Step pro cycling teams, it’s good enough for me.
CORE uses an innovative and wearable thermal energy transfer sensor to measure accurate core body temperature and map its effects on the individual. With its roots in the medical sector, CORE is based on a simple premise: when you get hot, your power output drops. By measuring and understanding the effects of temperature, you can then develop personalised strategies, such as training, pacing, cooling and acclimation to perform your best.

Ember mug
I do love a brew and I suppose you could argue that a properly hot coffee is essential to performance. So, does that make this piece of tech essential too? Imagine a drinks receptacle that allows you to set and maintain your perfect drinking temperature, no matter how slowly you sip. OK, a techno-mug that costs over a hundred quid and syncs with its own mobile app might be considered by some to be a little excessive. Not me. I’m having one in every colour.
