David Rice Atchison (the real 12th president) David Rice Atchison was the real 12 th president of the United Staes of America, though some people don't know him (Like you!!!). Just in case you don't know him, I'll tell you as much as I know: Atchison, democratic senator of M issouri, became president when James Polk's P residential te rm ended on Sunday march 4, 1849, and when Zachary Taylor refused to be sworn in until the following day, for it was the Sabbath. Taylors vice presidential r unning mate, M i lla rd F illmore, was not inaugurated, so Atchison ''Officially'' became president for one day. Some call that “acting president. He stated that he slept most of the day, though he was not next in line for P residency. Since everyone else's terms expired, he became president for a day. He never took a oath which is probably why people don't recognize him as a president. Even though David Rice Atchison was never officially president, I think he should be well known because he is pa rt of our count ry's history. David Rice Atchison 1807-1886 P resident for one day
