CAN YOU SPOT? See if you can spot these people in your poster. Read what they have to say about The Salvation Army. A MAN AND HIS CORNET The Salvation Army is my church. We meet for worship every Sunday and support and care for each other, just like a family. I am a soldier (member) of The Salvation Army. This means that I am a Christian and I have promised to love God and to follow Jesus’ teachings. I try to show my Christian faith through the way I live and by loving other people. I play the cornet in the band at my church. Music really helps me to express my worship to God.
A FIREMAN I was helped by The Salvation Army’s Emergency Services when I was involved in a major fire where many people were seriously hurt. The Salvation Army were on hand with food and drinks for the victims and firefighters. They had a mobile unit which was equipped with blankets and first aid equipment. They were also there to listen to us if we had any problems. Often people need to talk about what they have seen and heard following a major incident. The Salvation Army also helps with other disasters such as floods, bombings or train crashes.
A MAN SLEEPING ON THE STREET When I found myself living alone on the streets The Salvation Army helped me. One night a Salvation Army worker found me behind a large building where I always used to hang out. I felt safe there with other people but I was cold and hungry and getting very little sleep. The Salvation Army worker found me a place at a hostel. Here, I was given food, warmth and a bed to sleep in. Thanks to The Salvation Army, I am now living in my own flat and making new friends.
A WOMAN SITTING ON A BUCKET I am a Salvation Army officer, which is like a minister or a priest. I lead the worship services on a Sunday and help to serve the needs of my community. Every year The Salvation Army holds an Annual Appeal to raise money for its work. We sometimes use buckets just like the one I am sitting on.
A SKATER GIRL I belong to the youth group at my Salvation Army church. We meet every Sunday after morning worship to learn about what it means to be a Christian. We study the Bible, pray and talk about different issues we are facing. Last summer we organised a clean-up in our local community. It was great fun and we really felt like we were making a difference.
A CHILD LEANING ON THE BIBLE Me and my friends are members of The Salvation Army’s junior church. Some of us wear a uniform on a Sunday but you don’t have to wear a uniform to join in. I am in the children’s choir which we call the singing company. On Friday night there is a kids’ club where we play games, do crafts and learn about Jesus. It’s exciting to find out more about the Bible and our Christian faith.
AN ELDERLY WOMAN HANGING OFF A ZIMMER FRAME During the week I come to a lunch club at The Salvation Army. I also attend a friendship club for older people. As I find it difficult to get around easily a gentleman picks me up in the Salvation Army minibus. Sometimes it can be lonely when you reach old age. Every week a Salvation Army minister visits me to see how I am and to say a prayer with me. It’s nice to know people care.
A WOMAN PUSHING A MOUSE I work for The Salvation Army at their main office in London. There are lots of people who work there. Some of them help with fundraising, some with social work and others with Salvation Army church activities. I work in the Family Tracing Service. We help to find family members that have gone missing or can’t be found. It is wonderful to reunite families who might not have seen each other for many years.
A WOMAN HOLDING UP THE WAR CRY I decided to become a member of The Salvation Army after my friend invited me to an Alpha course. This helped me to find out more about the Christian faith. I really enjoy going to The Salvation Army and I am part of the dance and drama group.
The War Cry is The Salvation Army’s weekly Christian newspaper that we sell on the streets or in pubs. The money helps to fund our work. We also sell a children’s comic called Kids Alive!
A LITTLE GIRL HOLDING HER TEDDY BEAR’S HAND I go to a Parent and Toddler group with my mummy at The Salvation Army. I talk and play with my friends while my mummy gets to chat with her friends. There are lots of toys, paints and other things to make and do. We sing songs and nursery rhymes and have a drink and a snack.
A TEENAGER HOLDING THE GLOBE The globe I am holding shows where The Salvation Army can be found in more than 100 countries in the world. My parents are Salvation Army officers and have worked for The Salvation Army in many different countries. Not only are there Salvation Army churches in these countries but also Salvation Army hospitals, clinics, hostels, community centres, schools and much more.
AN ELDERLY MAN DIVING INTO A SOUP BOWL I regularly go to my local Salvation Army community centre in the week for my dinner. As I live on my own and I’m not used to cooking for myself I enjoy coming here for some good food. I also enjoy chatting with my friends who come here. The people at The Salvation Army are like my family!
