LIFE!CLOTHE YOURSELF Resources Needed – You will need to have prepared in advance three outfits. Two of these need to be outfits/ accessories that people use for a specific occupation or hobby. Examples - football top, apron and cook book, army tunic and Bible, hard hat and shovel etc. The third outfit is a plain jumper/hoody with the words Compassion, Kindness, Humility, Gentleness and Patience attached to it (best to write/type them on paper and tape them on.) Have all the outfits in a bag. They all need to be things that can be put on over the clothes they are already wearing. Bible Reading - Colossians 3 v 12 -14 The Message “
So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It's your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.” Thought - Ask for three volunteers and tell them they are going to do some dressing up. Give them a few moments to look through the bag and put their outfits on. Get the rest of the band to guess what they are dressed up as. Hopefully they will guess that the third person is dressed up as a Christian. Different jobs and hobbies sometimes need specific clothes and accessories. Imagine trying to play rugby in full scuba diving gear. Imagine trying to scuba dive in a rugby kit! It also helps us identify who's on the same team. If all footballers wore blue it might get a bit confusing. So what do we wear as Christians? Well as Salvationists we might wear uniform, whether that's navy tunic and trousers or a polo shirt, it means we're identifiable as Salvationists and that we're part of that team so to speak. But we tend to only wear our uniforms on Sundays or to specific events, what do we wear the rest of the week? How can people identify us as Christians? So just as some people wear specific clothes for their jobs or hobbies we as Christians need to clothe ourselves in things that God wants us to show to other people. That's how people will know we're on God's team. We need to be compassionate, kind, humble, gentle and patient. Not forgetting the all purpose, matches everything, perfect for any occasion, smartcasual garment - love. Love never goes out of fashion. So tomorrow when you're choosing your outfit for the day remember to think about the wardrobe God has picked out for you. Prayer Exercise – Ask 3 members of the group to pray 1
