ove is in the air, readers! That’s because Monday (14 February) is Valentine’s Day – a day to let those you love know that, well, you love them! There are many different types of love and they’re all awesome! That means that Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be about just boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands or wives. You can let anyone know how much you care about them – parents, carers, siblings, grandparents and friends. Who will you remind that you love them on Monday? Celebrating Valentine’s Day can be fun, but we shouldn’t really need a special day to tell people we care – we should try to remember to do this every day. That doesn’t mean you need to keep on giving out cards, flowers and chocolates – there are lots of ways you can show people you care. For example, spending quality time with a member of your family or a friend – especially doing something they enjoy – is a great way to show them that you think they’re the best. There’s one love that’s even greater than any other. God’s love is the biggest and best kind of love, and the Bible reminds us again and again how much he loves us. In John 3:16 it says that God loves us so much he did something incredible – ‘God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die’ (Contemporary English Version). It doesn’t get any more loving than that!
How do you feel when someone mentions love? Embarrassed? Shy? Maybe that’s because you’re thinking of the slushy-mushy, kissy-kissy, pink hearts and flowers kind of love that Valentine’s Day seems to be about. But real love isn’t like that. The Bible says that love is patient and kind – you can read more about real love in 1 Corinthians 13 (and check out this week’s Colouring Corner on page 11). When Jesus was asked what the most important commandment was he said it’s to love God with all your heart, mind and soul. Then he said that the second most important commandment is to love others as much as you love yourself. That doesn’t mean you have to run around hugging and kissing everyone. It just means you have to be nice to people, try not to be selfish and consider the needs of others. What a lovely place the world would be if more people loved one another. Have a LOVEly week!

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT REACHING OUT TO OTHERS
A Little Kindness Makes a Big Difference
A
s a child, the story of Zacchaeus confused me. I couldn’t understand what the fuss was about. A short man climbs a tree – big deal! However, now that I’m older I realise this is a wonderful example of how Jesus shows kindness as he helps people fix their relationships with God. You see, Zacchaeus wasn’t very popular. As a tax collector, it was his job to collect money from his fellow Jewish citizens to pay the Romans. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Zacchaeus cheated the people, by increasing the tax and keeping the extra money for himself! But Jesus, being in the business of giving people second chances, knew all about Zacchaeus. Instead of avoiding him, Jesus reached out with kindness
says Ibukun Baku
and Zacchaeus’s response to this was epic! Not only did Zacchaeus offer to give half of his possessions to the poor, but he promised to pay back everyone he cheated four times the amount of money he took. His actions showed that he was truly sorry for the things he’d done. Jesus wants us to be like him and show kindness to everyone, even those who aren’t treated well by others. Maybe there’s someone in your class who gets left out because of their attitude or behaviour. How could you reach out to them? A smile, sitting with them at lunch or asking how their weekend was, might make a big difference to them. This week, ask Jesus for courage to reach out and be the kind of friend he wants you to be.

How well do you know your Bible heroes? Can you name the boy who took on a giant or the girl who watched over her little brother as he sailed down the stream in a basket? The Bible is filled with amazing stories of ordinary people who, with God’s help, did extraordinary things. So read the clues below and guess who this week’s Bible hero is!
