ave you ever heard someone say ‘Hindsight is a wonderful thing’? Hindsight is looking back at past events. Sometimes when something’s gone wrong, people look back, see what caused the problem, then point out all the things that could have been done to make sure it went right. ‘Hindsight is a wonderful thing’ is a weird phrase, because what people are really saying is: ‘Hindsight is rubbish! No one knew it was going to go wrong. Anybody can look back and point out all the things that should have been done. What use is that now?’ So, why am I banging on about hindsight? Well, I’m sorry to say there have been times when I’ve felt a bit like the prophets of Baal (see the cartoon
I Spy When my family and I are waiting in a queue or we’re on a long journey we play a game of I spy. Maybe you’re reading this copy of ‘Kids Alive!’ while you’re waiting for something or someone. Bible story opposite). I’ve really needed my God to help me. I’ve prayed and prayed – I’ve even shouted my prayers out loud – and nothing seems to have happened. Now this is where hindsight truly is wonderful! As I look back on my life, I can see all the things that God did to help make my life better. And that’s the difference between the prophets of Baal and me – my God listens and answers my prayers. Our cartoonist has left us on a bit of a cliffhanger, so you’ll have to wait till next week to see what happens (spoiler alert – God answers Elijah’s prayer!). Sometimes when we pray, we just have to wait. God does hear your prayers and he will help you!

It might feel like you only just finished school for the summer holidays. However, believe it or not, kids in Scotland head back for a new school year this week. So we thought it’d be the perfect time to talk about some top tips for going back to school. If you don’t go back to school until September, keep these tips handy for when your first day comes around.
First Day Feelings
x
÷
Going back to school can make you feel lots of different things. Some people will be running down the road because they can’t wait to get back to learning every day. Others will be dragging their feet, dreading walking through those doors again.
=
+
To help you process your feelings you could try writing or drawing how you feel on paper. Think of the things you’re looking forward to and those that make you feel anxious. Then show these things to your parent or carer so they can talk them through with you.
Change is Coming We hope your summer holidays have been super relaxing. As the new term edges closer you can prepare for a change in your routine by going to bed earlier and getting up near your normal school time. This will help your mind and body to adjust.
It’s a great idea to get your school uniform and bag ready the night before. Then you won’t be scrambling around in the morning trying to find everything you need. And you’ll also have time for a healthy nutritious breakfast to set you up for the day!

Start of Something New Lots of children will be starting new schools over the next month. You might be moving to a new school or starting secondary school. If that’s you, don’t stress, we’ve got some tips for making the transition a smooth one. Plan how you’re going to get to your new school. You could do a couple of practice runs with your parent or carer so you know where you’re going on the first day. Make sure you have all the books and stationery that you need. See if your new school gives you a homework diary or timetable. This will help you keep note of where you need to be and what you need to do. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you’re struggling to find your way around. This could be especially important at secondary school as they’re often much bigger than primary schools. And there might be a lot of moving around to different rooms for lessons.
=
If there’s someone new at your school, make them feel welcome!
Your Vibe Attracts Your Tribe It’s completely normal to worry about making new friends at a new school. Sometimes you meet people that you click with instantly. But even when it takes a little bit longer, you can still find the Ant to your Dec or the Dick to your Dom! Here are some ideas to help you find some new besties. Ask others about their hobbies and interests to see if you have anything in common. Try talking to someone you haven’t spoken to before. You might find out they like the same stuff as you! Join a new club or group. This might bring you into contact with kids you’ve not met before. Be kind and friendly to others. You can use positive body language to let others know you’re interested in them. This can include smiling and looking people in the eye when you chat to them. Get your positive pants on! Send positive vibes by focusing on the things that are great about you. If you feel confident in yourself, you can show others how amazing you are!

+
Have a fantastic year at school! Remember to talk to your parent, carer, teacher or another grown-up you trust if you’re worried about going back to school or struggling to settle back in. We promise that it won’t just be you who feels that way.

Leon’s Lovely Locks! Leon attends a Salvation Army church with his family. When he heard about the Little Princess Trust charity, he wanted to help. Little Princess Trust helps children who lose their hair when they have treatment for cancer or other illnesses. The charity gives them free wigs made from real hair that is donated by people. These wigs help the children feel more confident about their appearance. Leon wanted to make a child a little happier while they were going through a difficult time. So, for two years he grew his hair without cutting it and then donated about 40 centimetres of it to the Trust. Not only that, but he also raised more than £1,000! Leon is over the moon about this, as the money will help make wigs and provide fitting services for two children or young people. Well done, Leon!
