are shrinking because ice at the Antarctic is melting far more quickly than it used to. By raising awareness about the impact of global warming on penguins, it’s hoped that people will make changes to the way they live. It’s easy to get involved in Penguin Awareness Day. You could visit a penguin exhibit at your nearest zoo, watch a wildlife documentary about penguins, discover more at a natural history museum or read a library book about them. Some charities or zoos will allow you to ‘adopt’ a penguin to raise money for conservation. However, the best thing we can do to protect our feathered friends is to help slow down global warming. Check out pages 12 and 13 for some great tips on how to tackle climate change!

You can also celebrate Penguin Awareness Day by colouring in the penguins on page 11

JESUS HIM HELP YOU

Stick With Jesus

hen I was a kid, I didn’t like going to church. I’d do anything I could to get out of it. The truth is, I didn’t like the thought of going to church. Once I got there, it was OK – there were people there who cared about me and did their best to make learning about Jesus fun.

W

One of the reasons I didn’t like the thought of going to church was because I got teased about it at school. The truth is, there were probably only one or two kids who did that. My friends – the people who really matter –were pretty cool with it. In fact, as a grown-up, I’ve had messages from old friends who said they admired me for sticking with church and for having a faith.

Why am I telling you all this? I guess I’m hoping it’ll encourage you to stick with Jesus or make a decision to follow him. I’m really glad that I did. I won’t pretend that life will be perfect or even easy if you do – you’ll still make mistakes and people will still tease you or be unkind sometimes. But for me, sticking with Jesus is the best decision I ever made. I can think of many times when Jesus has been with me and helped me. Sometimes that’s through some advice I’ve read in the Bible, an everything will be OK kind of feeling after I’ve prayed or through people he’s placed around me.

Don’t be afraid to follow Jesus, readers – it could be the best thing you ever do.

If you’re not already a Christian but you think you would like to live Jesus’ way, here’s a prayer you can say to ask him into your life. If you would say you’re already a Christian you can still use this prayer as a way to ask Jesus to keep helping you in all you do.

Amen
Dear Jesus, I know you love me and want to be my friend.

My Identity in Jesus My Identity in Jesus My Identity in

Did you know that when you become friends with Jesus he gives you a new identity? You’re a member of God’s Kingdom and with the help of the Holy Spirit, you now have the power to follow Jesus’ way of living.

I Am… LOVED

God loves you so much! The Bible is full of stories and verses that show us God’s love. For example, John 3:16 says, ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life’ ( New International Version). God gave up the most precious thing to him, Jesus, for an opportunity to be your friend.

In Romans 8:35–39, we are told that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. There’s nothing you can do that will make God love you more or less than he loves you right now. God loves you!

Now you know how enormous God’s love for you is, you can choose to love him and others too.

Every day this week, tell yourself ‘I am loved’. This will help God’s truth stay in your heart. Use the tick boxes below to help remind you and tick each day once you’re done. Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday

Neighbours and Satellites

Andromeda galaxy is our closest galactic neighbour. It’s so big and bright it can be seen from Earth on moonless nights without a telescope! Both our galaxy, the Milky Way, and Andromeda are spiral-shaped, with curved arms that make them look like pinwheel reworks.

The Milky Way has smaller neighbours too. Astronomers call these satellite galaxies. Earth and the other planets in our solar system orbit the closest star, the Sun. In the same way, hundreds of billions of stars – including smaller galaxies – orbit the centre of the Milky Way!

Penguins’ Problems

It’s hard not to smile when you see videos of little penguins waddling around. They look so adorable! Unfortunately, penguins are facing some pretty big problems. So here are some fascinating facts about these brilliant birds, as well as some information about the problems penguins are facing.

First Some Facts

There are many species of penguin and most of them live in the southern hemisphere. These include the tiny blue penguins that live in Australia and New Zealand and the majestic emperor penguins of Antarctica. There are also the Galapagos penguins which are the only penguins to live north of the equator.

Penguins are considered birds, but they can’t y as they have ippers instead of wings. These make them expert swimmers –some can reach speeds of 15 miles per hour underwater!

Penguins are black and white so they can camou age with their surroundings and these clever creatures each have their own call – this helps them to identify their mates or chicks in a large group.

Climate Change

Climate change is a big problem for lots of species of penguin. When people talk about climate change, they’re talking about changes in the Earth’s temperature. The Earth’s average temperature can move up and down naturally. However, in recent years, scientists have discovered that it’s been increasing more quickly than it usually does. This change is sometimes called global warming and it’s a big problem for the planet’s environment – that’s everything around us, including things such as rivers, trees and animals.

12

What’s the Cause?

Climate change is in uenced by things that humans are doing. Burning fossil fuels, such as oil, coal and gas, releases harmful gases into Earth’s atmosphere. Humans use these fuels to power vehicles or create energy for things such as electricity.

Cutting down forests to make space for more people to live in or for farming also has a big impact. This is because trees absorb carbon dioxide, which is one of the harmful gases that adds to climate change.

Melting Ice

Climate change is especially dif cult for emperor penguins and Adélie penguins which live in Antarctica. These penguins rely on sea ice so they can access food and places to breed. However, as Earth’s temperatures rise, sea ice melts and disappears. In 2008, a WWF (World Wildlife Fund) study discovered that 50 per cent of emperor penguins and 75 per cent of Adelie penguins could disappear in less than 40 years! How sad.

What Can You Do?

Thankfully there are things we can all do to try to help tackle climate change and help our penguin pals. Have a read of some of our top tips below…

Growing your own fruit or vegetables helps because it means trucks, planes and ships aren’t needed to transport that food from where it grows to your home.

Walking or riding your bike instead of travelling by car means you won’t add harmful gases to the atmosphere.

Cutting back on the amount of water you use also saves energy. Don’t leave the tap running when you brush your teeth and take short showers instead of the bath with lots of water.

Planting more trees helps to prevent more carbon dioxide from entering Earth’s atmosphere.

Turning off lights, computers and games consoles when you’re not using them means your family will use less energy.

Saying no to plastics where possible is really good. That means no plastic straws in drinks and reusing bags and water bottles rather than buying new plastic ones.

Recycling everything you can to avoid waste is another way to do your bit.
