Pets are awesome! Whether they’re uffy, feathered, snuggly or scaly, they bring oodles of joy. That’s why it’s a great idea to give pets some extra attention on Love Your Pet Day!

Love Your Pet Day takes place on Monday (20 February). Join pet lovers everywhere as they pamper their pets and celebrate their special relationship. Your pets might have wagging tails, brilliant colours or exotic origins. They might be terrestrial, aquatic or caged. It doesn’t matter what they are, scientists tell us that pets can make people happier and less stressed!

They’re special friends and it’s important to take care of them. Pets need to be loved, exercised, well fed and watered, with cages and coats kept clean. On Monday go the extra mile by giving them a special treat, replacing a broken toy with a new one, playing with them or taking them for an extra-long walk. Even if you don’t own a pet, you can visit an animal shelter or spend time with a friend’s pet.

If you only have toy pets, such as teddies, why don’t you have a tea party with them or dress them up in some new clothes? Whatever you do, make sure you nd a way to make your pet’s day!

There’s an opportunity to win some living aquatic pets in this week’s competition. Check out page 10!

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE

Choose Love

Have you ever heard of the green-eyed monster? Don’t worry, it’s not real! It’s just a phrase to describe the jealous feeling people get when they really want something that someone else has. Being jealous is an emotion like being happy or sad, but it’s also an emotion that must be kept under control. Otherwise, it can lead to some bad choices, just like in this week’s Bible cartoon.

Cain and Abel both brought their offerings to God. Abel gave the best gift he could, but Cain didn’t. As a result, God accepted Abel’s offering but not Cain’s. So Cain became very angry and jealous of Abel – he had a case of the green-eyed monster.

When you’re upset, do your parents or carers try to calm you down? God tried to calm Cain down,

because he knew that Cain was about to make a bad choice. Sadly, Cain didn’t listen to God and ended up hurting his brother.

Everyone feels angry or jealous at some point in time. It’s not that it’s wrong to feel that way, but it is wrong to hurt others because of it. The best way to deal with a case of the green-eyed monster is to smother it with love. Choosing actions and thoughts of love will quickly snuff out any negative feelings.

This week have a read of 1 Corinthians 13:4–7. This popular Bible passage is a great reminder of what true love looks like and will hopefully help you make the right choice should you ever get a case of the green-eyed monster.

Heart-tastic!

Read the scenarios below and tick the green heart next to the responses that show love rather than jealousy

The cosmos or universe is so enormous and stupendous it’s mind-boggling! Here are some facts about space that are … well, cosmic!

Dark Energy and Mystery MatteR

Space is full of galaxies, stars, planets, black holes, comets and asteroids. However, these make up only about ve per cent of the energy and matter in the universe! There’s a lot more out there and scientists don’t fully understand what it is.

24 February Gloria Oriakhi – age 13 DARK MATTER DARK ENERGY

Scientists can see that the universe is growing. They believe there’s an energy in space that’s making the universe increase. They don’t know what it is or where it comes from, but they can tell that it’s there. Scientists call it dark energy. There is also stuff in space that’s not regular matter or a black hole. This dark matter is a mystery to astronomers.

So you want to be…

A Vet

Heigh-ho! It’s off to work you go – don’t worry, it won’t be for a long time yet! But what do you want to be when you grow up? There are loads of great jobs to choose from but sometimes it’s hard to decide. From our reader pro le answers we know lots of our readers want to be vets when they grow up. So, with it being Love Your Pet Day this week, we thought we’d tell you a little bit about what the job is like.

Treating and Testing

If you love the idea of looking after and helping sick or injured animals, then being a vet could be the perfect job for you! Vets can work in places such as veterinary practices, farms or zoos. That means animals might come to visit vets at their surgeries or the vets could go out to visit the animals.

A usual day for a vet involves diagnosing and treating sick animals. That could include performing tests on animals, such as X-rays or scans, carrying out health checks, giving vaccinations and even performing operations on ill or injured animals. Vets might also give advice to people about caring for their animals and making sure they have the right kind of food.

It’s Great Because…

The greatest thing about being a vet is having a job that involves spending lots of time with animals. It’s also cool because you get to look after those animals and make them better when they’re sick or hurt. However, not all the jobs vets do are fun. There are dif cult decisions to make and sometimes it’s not possible to help every animal get better.

12

What You Need

To become a vet you’ll need a university degree. Veterinary courses usually take ve years to complete – some even take six years! To get a place on one of these courses you’ll need ve GCSEs, including maths, English language and science. You’ll also need three A levels and three A levels, including biology and probably chemistry, physics or maths.

Put It to the Test A B

To become a vet you need to have a very good knowledge of animals. Give your knowledge a test by matching the animals below to the food that they eat.
