Happy New Year! I hope you had a great Christmas and enjoyed a break from school. I used to hate going back to school after Christmas. To be honest, I never really enjoyed going to school much at all. There were some bits I liked, such as playtime and home time. Something I did like at school was starting a new exercise book. I would promise myself I’d be really neat and try to do my best. A new year can be a bit like starting a new exercise book. You have a whole load of empty pages to fill with adventures. It doesn’t matter if things don’t fall neatly into place, just as long as you try to make the best of the year ahead. One of the best things you could do this year – if you haven’t already – is become a friend of Jesus. I hope 2022 is your best year ever!

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT NOT WORRYING

Learn from the Birds

I

Iove watching birds feeding in my garden. Whenever I see them pecking at seeds on the bird table or flitting off with bits of peanut in their beaks, I think about what Jesus said about not worrying about the future (check out this week’s Bible cartoon). He said that if God takes care of the birds, he will also take care of us. He also said that even though birds are important, we are much more valuable to God. Worrying all the time can make people unhappy, even ill. Maybe you’re a bit of a ‘worry pot’ – someone who finds it difficult not to worry about things – or you know someone who is. There are sometimes big things that people face that make them anxious,

says Melita Day-Lewis

such as money worries or the new variant of Covid19. They might be concerned about their schoolwork or making friends, or upset about bullying. I think Jesus knew that life would be really tough at times and that lots of people would worry about the future. He told this story to remind us that God cares about us and that if we trust him, he will look after us. That doesn’t mean that things will always be easy or go the way we expect but, no matter what the future brings, Jesus will help those who love and follow him. As you start the new year, remember you’re super important to Jesus and he will look after you, whatever your worries might be!

What’s your favourite Bible verse and do you know it off by heart? If so, do you often repeat it to yourself? Reciting Scripture we’ve memorised is a great way of expressing how we feel – all our joy, hopes and concerns. It’s also a great reminder of God’s promises and enormous love for us. That’s why in Deuteronomy 18:11, we’re encouraged to place God’s word in our ‘hearts and minds’. So have a go at learning the Bible verse below… Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here! 2 Corinthians 5:17 (New International Version) Check out our pull-out calendar on the centre pages for some extra help remembering this verse.

History of Resolutions Around 4,000 years ago, ancient Babylonians celebrated the first recorded new year festivities with promises to the gods in return for a good year. Around 46 BC, Roman Emperor Julius Caesar shuffled the calendar and established 1 January as the start of the new year. The Romans then made promises to be good that year. Medieval knights in the late Middle Ages took part in an annual ‘Peacock Vow’ which involved placing their hands on a live or roasted peacock and promising to be brave and noble in the coming year. Early Christians also took part in New Year traditions. They would gather for Covenant Renewal Services – a covenant is a kind of promise to God. These services gave people time to think about past mistakes, pray, read the Bible and sing songs. Some churches still hold these services today.

A Fresh Start! Even though there’s nothing that different about you on New Year’s Day, a new year can be a good time to stop, pause and think about how to be the best version of yourself you can be. Maybe you have some goals you would like to achieve this year – there are some ideas to help you out on the opposite page!

12 KA - p12-13 - 1 January.indd 1

16/12/2021 16:12

Physical Goals It’s always a good idea to eat healthily. This sometimes means cutting down on the foods that are yummy but bad for you, such as sweets and crisps. Try to eat more vegetables or see if you can eat some fruit and vegetables you’ve never tried before! Another good way to live a healthy lifestyle is by doing exercise. This doesn’t have to be going for a run. It could be playing basketball with your friends or having a kick-around in the park after school. It could even be a dance class or swimming. It doesn’t matter what exercise it is as long as you enjoy it and it helps you to stay fit! Remember, if you’re doing exercise it’s also important to drink lots of water to keep your body hydrated.

Mental Well-Being It isn’t just your body that needs exercise – your mind does too! This can be done by trying hard at school or thinking good thoughts. You can also help others, such as your parents and carers, by doing chores at home and being kind to people you meet. We all have different emotions and that’s all right. Sometimes it can be helpful to talk to a friend or an adult. Other people prefer to write down how they are feeling in journals.

Spiritual Aims It’s also important to think about your spiritual wellbeing. It’s always good to spend time with God every day and invite him to be involved in all the different parts of your life. When we pray, we’re talking to God. That doesn’t mean you have to kneel at the side of your bed at night – you can pray anytime, anywhere, about anything. You can also read the Bible to learn more about God and his son Jesus.

Use this space to write down any other goals you may have for 2022

Have a happy and healthy 2022, readers! KA - p12-13 - 1 January.indd 2
