Jorvik Viking Festival images
More than 1,200 years ago Viking pirates, known as sea wolves, invaded Britain and Ireland, looting treasures and taking slaves. After many such raids they eventually settled in the British Isles and became part of our history. Perhaps you even have some Viking blood in you! Every year the Jorvik Viking Festival in York celebrates the fascinating culture of Vikings. There’s plenty of Viking fun to get involved in, so if you live near York or you’re planning a half-term holiday in the north of England, make sure you visit the festival! You can watch hundreds of Vikings marching through the city streets or visit their camps to discover 10th-century Viking goods and crafts. There are special Norse craft activities for kids, including pottery, beard making and flag painting, as well as a Viking beard competition! Find out who will be the strongest Viking champion Check out as mighty Vikings test their strength with hammer holding, leg page 11 for a wrestling and hand-to-hand fighting. colouring of a There’s also an exhibition of Viking treasure – the Silverdale Viking warrior in Hoard found in Lancashire, which includes hundreds of silver battle armour and rings and ancient coins. The highlight event will be the new to learn about the Jorvik Games where warriors will challenge one another in armour of God in combat, using Viking weapons and wearing battle armour. Ephesians 6 Find out more at jorvikvikingfestival.co.uk
I have a great Viking history book called The Hammer and the Cross. It’s all about how Vikings interacted with Christians and how Christians influenced Vikings. I say it’s a great book – I’ve never actually read it! But there’s some blurb on the back of the book that explains what it’s all about and says what a great read it is! I’m sure The Hammer and the Cross is fantastic, but I’ll only know if that’s true if I actually read it. One book I read regularly is the Bible. Now that is an excellent book! It’s full of incredible stories and great advice, and it’s one of the main ways to find out how God wants you to live your best life. You can either take my word for it or you can pick it up and read it yourself. I know what I’d suggest you do – get reading!

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT HOW SMALL ACTIONS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
Every Little Helps!
H
says Alicia Begley
ave you ever been told you can’t do something because you’re too small or too young? When I was younger my family went to a theme park that had lots of rides. My sister was too short to go on the big roller coaster, so she had to wait on the boring ‘baby ride’ while I was twisting and turning and getting very dizzy! In situations like this, there’s a very important reason for smaller children not being allowed on rides – it’s about safety and making sure people don’t get hurt. However, sometimes in life it can feel like you’re told you’re too young when actually you can contribute and make a difference. In the Bible cartoon opposite, Timothy receives a
letter from his friend Paul encouraging him even though he’s young. I hope you have grown-ups who encourage you to be bold in the things that you do and say because your actions and words can be powerful. Even the little things you do can make a huge difference. Last week we encouraged you to think about how you could be a Creation Champion. Part of loving God means caring for his creation. This week think about some small things you can do that will help make a big difference. Try to turn off the tap when you’re brushing your teeth or give away your clothes and toys rather than throwing them in the bin. You’re not too small to help care for creation and as the saying goes, ‘Every little helps!’
Recycling Role Model Below are some items that can be recycled. Draw lines from each item to their correct bin as a reminder of all the ways we can help the planet.

How well do you know your Bible heroes? Can you name the boy who took on a giant or the girl who watched over her little brother as he sailed down the stream in a basket? The Bible is filled with amazing stories of ordinary people who, with God’s help, did extraordinary things. So read the clues below and guess who this week’s Bible hero is!

Check out Ephesians 6:10–17 Being a Christian can be tough! Our enemy, the devil, will try every trick in the book to stop us from following Jesus and telling others about him. That’s why we need protection. When Paul wrote about the armour of God in Ephesians 6:10–17, the people he wrote to were used to seeing soldiers wearing armour. He thought this would be a good way of helping people to remember that God would keep them safe. We reckon it’ll help you too. Remember, the armour of God isn’t a metal suit that we actually wear – it’s something that helps us to visualise God’s protection over us.
Helmet of Salvation (verse 17) The devil will try to make you doubt that Jesus saved you. Stay positive and let the helmet of salvation protect you from unhelpful, sad or negative thoughts.
Breastplate of Righteousness (verse 14) The devil likes to hit you where it hurts – your heart. He’ll do anything and use anyone to hurt your feelings and make you feel rubbish about yourself. Protect your heart by holding on to what you know is right.
Belt of Truth (verse 14) Wrap God’s truth tightly around you to protect yourself. The devil uses lies and the hurtful things people might say to make you feel the life you’re living is wrong.
Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (verse 17) The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, is the one weapon you have. The devil hates the Bible because it’s full of truth. It will help you to discover the way God wants you to live – remember to read it often as you grow in faith.
Shield of Faith (verse 16) Faith is really believing in Jesus and his promises to you. A strong faith will help protect you from the devil’s weapons, such as insults, setbacks and temptation.
Shoes of Readiness (verse 15) Jesus’ followers should be ready for action and be willing to go wherever God leads. Read your Bible, know your stuff and always be ready to tell others about him. Go to salvationarmy.org.uk/kidsalive to download a printable PDF of this page KA - p11 - 21 May.indd 1

y a D ip h C d n a h is F l Nationa It’s National Fish and Chip Day on Friday (27 May), a day that celebrates one of Britain’s favourite dishes! Whether it’s eaten in a restaurant, bought as a takeaway or cooked at home, most people love yummy fresh fish cooked in crunchy batter and served with chunky chips.
‘Please Sir, I Want Some More!’ Fish and chips as a meal combo began in England and became popular in the 1800s. A fried fish warehouse is mentioned in Charles Dickens’ book Oliver Twist, which was published in 1838, and a trade in fried chipped potatoes was growing in the north of England.

Good News and Bad News Fish and chips might be one of the nation’s first choices on the menu, but are they healthy? The answer is yes… and no! Fish is filled with vitamins and minerals that help prevent heart attacks and boost brain health. Spuds are a great choice too! They’re high in fibre, which is good for your digestion and full of antioxidants – molecules that fight disease.
Fish and chips only become an unhealthy choice when they’re deep fried in oil. Oil is high in fat and too much of it is bad for your heart.

Healthier Choices That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a yummy serving of fish and chips. All you need to do is ask your parents or carers to change the way the food is prepared and cooked.

Keyrings for Ukraine
After Isabelle, age 7, heard the news about the conflict in Ukraine, she wanted to help. So, Isabelle decided to make and sell 200 keyrings with the money raised going to The Salvation Army to help people who are both fleeing and staying in Ukraine. The keyrings were a huge success and were sold at Bridgwater Salvation Army, as well as at a local supermarket and Isabelle’s school. In total she raised an incredible £575 and was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by Lieutenant Heather Culshaw, who is in charge of The Salvation Army at Bridgwater. Well done, Isabelle!
