This week it’s hard to miss the fact that it’s Halloween. Some people see it as some harmless fun (and a way to get free sweets!) but for other people it can be a bit scary. Trick-or-treating is something that many Christians prefer to stay away from. When we love Jesus we have his light inside us. The Bible reminds us in 2 Corinthians 4:6 that God made it possible for his light to shine in our hearts. And in John 12:35 Jesus tells us that because of his love for us the darkness can’t hurt us. Nothing can ever get rid of our light or stop it shining. This means that we don’t have to worry about scary things in the world – check out pages 4 and 5 to learn more about this! When people around you are dressing up as ghosts, witches and other creepy things, it can be hard to go against the crowd. However, it is important to spread positivity to the people you meet. Why don’t you head to a light party on 31 October instead? Remember you have Jesus’ light inside us, and it will always be there. Be a light for other people and let it glow!

This week’s Marvellous Memory Verse (check out page 6) is one of my favourite Bible verses. I’ve spent a lot of time as a grown-up leading or helping with Salvation Army activities for kids and, of course, I’m the editor of Kids Alive! Matthew 19:14 is a verse that I’ve shared with hundreds of children and lots of grown-ups too. I like it because Jesus is making it clear that children are really important to him. In fact, he says that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to you. That kind of makes you royalty, don’t you know! We live in a world that can sometimes be scary, so it’s great to know that the greatest person ever to have lived on Earth is on your side. Jesus loves you and wants the best for you. Whatever’s going on in your life, good or bad, Jesus wants to be part of it.

Shine Bright!

says Alicia Begley

Ilike to think I’m not scared of anything, but I am! I don’t really like heights and sometimes I get a bit nervous when it’s dark.

It might feel like there are things in the world that are frightening and no one understands, but God does. In fact, as the Bible cartoon opposite shows us, there are some pretty crazy things in the Bible. The Old Testament (which was written before Jesus lived on Earth) has loads of stories, including David defeating the giant Goliath and Jonah being swallowed by a massive sea creature! The New Testament tells us about some interesting things that Jesus did, including healing sick people and even bringing a man back to life!

If we decide to follow Jesus, he will protect us. We don’t have to be scared because Jesus defeated the darkness by dying on the cross. I don’t mean darkness when you turn out the light (although that can be scary). This type of darkness is our sin – the things we do that aren’t kind or right. Jesus is the light that helps us out of our darkness.

Think about a really dark room. If you turn on a tablet it can create a lot of light, even though it’s small. We have to be little lights in the world. It might be that you’re kind to someone at school who has no friends or you pick up some rubbish you find. They’re small acts but these little lights will help the world to shine brighter!
