International Day of Charity

Monday 5 September is International Day of Charity. It’s a United Nations day that highlights the important work that charities do around the world.

Little and Large

Give Back and Get Involved

There are about 170,000 charities operating in the UK. These includes huge organisations, such as Cancer Research UK, the British Heart Foundation and The Salvation Army (who publish Kids Alive!).

Big charities like these are what most people think of when you say the word charity. However, did you know that these big organisations make up just a tiny number of the charities in the UK? Just four per cent of charities, in fact! That means that 96 per cent of charities in the UK are smaller. These smaller charities need just as much, if not more, help from the public to keep helping people.

International Day of Charity is important because it reminds us to give back.

It’s easy to go about our daily lives and forget about people who need more help than others. Charities rely on donations or fundraisers so that they can help people. That doesn’t mean you have to break into your piggy bank and give everything you have (although you can do that if you want).

Ready, Set, Bake!

Charity Challenge

Bake some cakes and sell them to raise money for a charity.

Fun Run

Charity fun runs happen all over the UK. See if there’s one happening near you that you can join. You could also plan your own run and ask people to sponsor you for completing it.

Get Sponsored

As well as running, you could try other sponsored events. A sponsored silence, read, dance, sing and swim are all great ideas.

Give It Up

What’s your favourite food or drink? Could you give them up for a month or more? Your family could donate the money saved to charity or ask people to sponsor you to give up your fave thing. You could even give up your favourite tech, such as your tablet or computer console!

Get Crafty

Do you like making things and being creative? Why not make some paintings or jewellery to sell? Then you can donate the money to your chosen charity.

Some people do incredible challenges for charity. You won’t be able to sign up for anything as extreme as a skydive or mountain trek, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do something. Whether it’s cycling further than you’ve ever done before or facing your fear of heights by abseiling, there’s sure to be something to challenge you.

Group Effort

You can raise even more money (and let everyone know about your favourite charity) by getting a group fundraiser going. Talk to your parents or carers about organising something such as a concert at church, a community car wash, a non-uniform day at school or a fashion show.

The Big Collection

Keep an eye out for people who are raising money for The Salvation Army this month. The Big Collection is a fundraising appeal run by Salvation Army members, friends and volunteers, and it happens every September. Every penny helps people who are vulnerable or in need in the UK. Some Salvation Army members might be collecting money on high streets or in shopping centres, but others may be holding events to raise funds too. You can also ask your parents or carers to donate to the Big Collection online. Visit salvationarmy.org.uk/big-collection for more information.

Cool Colourings

Lauren, age 13, sent us this pink dot-to-dot tractor colouring. Fantastic neat work, Lauren! We love this rainbow tractor coloured by Jessica, age 12. It will certainly brighten up the farmer’s field!

Both Harriet, age 6 (below left), and Alexis, age 12 (below right), chose bright sunshine yellow for Queen Elizabeth’s outfit for their Platinum Jubilee colourings. It’s a good choice as the Queen often wears yellow!

Awesome Oliver!

Oliver, age 9, helped to raise funds for Newcastle City Temple Salvation Army’s new building. He did a five-mile sponsored walk from the centre of Newcastle to Cowgate, where the new hall will be built. Oliver and his mum, Rosey, also organised a stall at his school’s summer fayre. Together they raised a whopping £725, more than £400 over their original target. That’s awesome, Oliver!
