It’s time for you to meet the residents of Element City – air, earth, water and re. Everyone in the city lives by one simple rule – elements cannot mix! Well, that’s until ery-tempered Ember Lumen and over-emotional Wade Ripple prove they can. When a burst water pipe oods the Lumen family’s shop, The Fireplace, city inspector Wade Ripple gushes into Ember’s life. The two do not hit it off. Things only get worse after Wade spots a number of problems with the property Ember’s father built, and feels pressurised into reporting the building to City Hall.

In an effort to save Ember’s family home and shop, the unlikely pair go on an adventure as they try to discover what’s causing the leaks at The Fireplace. Spending time together helps them realise how much they have in common. They also begin to understand how their different gifts and talents can help them work as a team.

Will Wade dampen Ember’s ery spirit? Perhaps Ember will cause Wade to get steamed. Maybe they’ll discover that good things can happen when opposites react. You can nd out for yourselves as Disney-Pixar’s Elemental is in cinemas now!

On Father’s Day, my family went to a preview of Elemental.

Arriving at the cinema, my daughters were amazed to discover the lobby had been transformed into Element City.

The cinema was packed with people – all from different backgrounds, cultures, heritages and nationalities. So it was interesting that we were watching a flm set in a city where ‘people’ from different backgrounds aren’t allowed to mix. It made me think about the world we live in and I felt sad that not everyone feels included, and how some people aren’t allowed to join in everything.

Over the last few weeks, KA! JAM has been about making sure everyone belongs (check out this week’s pages 4 and 5). There’s a cool bit of the Bible (Luke 13:29–30) where it says that one day, everyone – wherever they’re from and whatever their background – will be able to be together in God’s Kingdom.

Be a Pal and Help says Justin Reeves

Some years ago, I injured my knee ligaments while playing football. I say I injured them, it was the player who kicked me who actually injured them! Anyway, I ended up in a cast from hip to ankle, which meant that going anywhere or doing anything became very tricky.

Fortunately, I lived with a good bunch of friends who helped me as much as they could. They drove me to work and to church, and made sure I got to spend time with friends and family. They worked hard to make sure I enjoyed most things I did before my injury. I was so grateful for good friends.

In this week’s cartoon Bible story we see the friends

of someone who couldn’t walk help him in the very best way. They took him to Jesus and Jesus changed his life. If you’ve been following this series in Kids Alive! you might remember that in Bible times people who were disabled or seriously ill were outcasts – they weren’t able or allowed to join in with anything.

Isn’t it amazing then that this guy’s pals got together to get him to Jesus – even though it must have been hard work. Sometimes making sure people are included can feel like hard work – you have to nd out what people need and then take action to help them. What can you and your friends do to help people feel included? Don’t be put off because it seems dif cult.

The cosmos or universe is so enormous and stupendous it’s mind-boggling! Here are some facts about space that are … well, cosmic!

Explorer 1

Explorer 1 was launched on 31 January 1958. The United States of America created this satellite in less than three months and it’s known as America’s rst entry into the Space Race. The satellite was very thin and tall with a height of 203cm and a width of 15.9cm. It travelled around the Earth at a distance of just 220 miles above the planet’s surface, completing around 12.5 orbits (circuits or laps) a day.

James Van Allen was an American space scientist who was one of the three people who created Explorer 1. Using data gathered by Explorer 1, Van Allen discovered a group of charged particles that came from the Sun and were captured by the Earth’s magnetic eld. This was named the Van Allen Radiation Belt and helped scientists understand cosmic radiation, and its effect on Earth.

Living a healthy and an active lifestyle and caring for your physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

Summer Safety

Do you enjoy the sunny weather that (hopefully!) comes in the summer? It’s lovely to head to the beach when the weather is nice, but it’s important to stay safe too. Then you can make the most of the wonderful sunny season.

If you’re heading to the beach, make sure your parents or carers choose a beach with lifeguards on duty. Then there will be experts to help you if you need them. You can nd your nearest lifeguarded beach by visiting rnli.org/find-my-nearest/lifeguarded-beaches

Look out for ags on lifeguarded beaches. Lifeguards use different ags to show you where it’s safe to swim. Here’s what those ags mean.

Red and yellow flags show areas for swimmers and bodyboarders.

Black and white chequered flags mark the area that’s for surfboards, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and other non-powered craft. Never swim or bodyboard here.

Red flags mean danger! Never go in the water when there are red ags ying.

Orange windsocks are used to say that no in atables should be used in the water, because of offshore or strong wind conditions.

If you get into trouble in the water, try to stay calm. Float on your back in a starfish shape and call for help.

Getting Lost

The easiest way to avoid getting lost on the beach is to stick together. However, lots of people do get lost every year, so here are some ways to reduce the risks.

When you get to the beach, agree a meeting point with your parents or carers. Then if you’re separated you can all head to that place. A good place to meet is the lifeguarded station if it’s close by. If you haven’t agreed a meeting point, nd your nearest lifeguard and ask them for help.

Some people also use wristbands that parents or carers can write their mobile number on. If you get lost while wearing the wristband, someone can call them to tell them where you are. Some beaches even provide free wristbands!

Sand Safety

Digging holes in the sand at the beach can be great fun, but be careful how far and deep you dig. Don’t dig tunnels or dig holes that are deeper than your waist height or the waist height of younger siblings or friends! This is because sand can cave in and make it very dif cult to get out.

Also ll in any holes before you leave the beach so that others don’t get injured falling in.

Coastal Cliffs

Cliffs can be more dangerous than they look and cliff falls or landslides can happen suddenly. Keep an eye out and follow any warning signs. Always stay well back from cliff edges. If you’re on the beach by a cliff, don’t get too close to the base of the cliff and never climb a cliff as a short cut to the top.
