Thank You Day is the perfect time to say thanks to everyone that makes our communities great. There are loads of ways to get involved. You could make a drink for your parents or carers; buy some owers for your teacher; make a card for your church or Sunday school leaders; create friendship bracelets for your pals; bake some biscuits for the person who works in your favourite shop or café; or tell the person who cleans your high street or park how much you appreciate their hard work. Whatever you do, just share how grateful you are for those wonderful people around you.
If you want to go big with your appreciation, why not get together with family or friends to organise a barbe-thank-cue (barbecue) for someone you think deserves an extra special thanks?

If you’re wondering why I’m singing happy birthday to The Salvation Army, it’s because this weekend the publisher of Kids Alive! will celebrate its Big Birthday (AKA Founders’ Day). Celebrated on 2 July, it’s a day that marks the anniversary of Catherine and William Booth starting this awesome organisation. Lots has happened in the 158 years since that moment. The Salvation Army has told millions of people all over the world about Jesus, and helped millions more in all sorts of ways.
Founders’ Day links well to Thank You Day (see above) because the Army wants to thank everyone who helps or supports all the good work it does. Make sure you say a big ‘THANK YOU!’ to someone – maybe your Sunday school or kids club leaders –at your Salvation Army this weekend!

ave you ever felt left out, uncared for, or unloved? Maybe other kids at school have left you out at playtime, play dates or parties. Being left out doesn’t feel nice, does it?
Bartimaeus, the character in this week’s cartoon Bible story, was used to being left out in a big way. It wasn’t just that he couldn’t join in fun stuff – as a blind person during those days people would try to exclude Bartimaeus from everything! That means he would never have gone to school, he wouldn’t have been allowed into a place of worship, and he wouldn’t have had a job. Never mind being left out by his friends, he probably had no friends to be left
out by. Then Jesus came along.
It’s easy to think that the amazing thing about this story is that Jesus made it possible for Bartimaeus to see. Don’t get me wrong, that is amazing! However, it’s not the only amazing thing that happened. The fact that Jesus stopped to show some real love and care to someone who had been left out of everything by everyone his whole life was incredible in itself.
Is there someone you know who gets left out because of the way they are? What can you do to include them and show them love and care, just as Jesus did with Bartimaeus?

The cosmos or universe is so enormous and stupendous it’s mind-boggling! Here are some facts about space that are … well, cosmic!
On 4 October 1957 a beach ball-sized satellite called Sputnik 1 was launched into space by the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union (which was a collection of Eastern European countries run by Russia) and the USA were in competition to develop arti cial satellites to explore outer space. Sputnik 1 was the rst man-made object to orbit ( y round) Earth.
The satellite had four giant antennae and its job was to send radio signals back to Earth. Jodrell Bank – a space observatory in Cheshire, England –was asked to add a radar on to their radio telescope to track the rocket. Sputnik 1 orbited Earth 90 times a day getting slowly closer to its atmosphere. The satellite orbited Earth for three months before re-entering and burning up in Earth’s atmosphere.

The Summer Reading Challenge is here to keep you reading throughout your summer holidays. Whether you’re chilling at home, travelling by plane or car or relaxing by the sea or pool, there are plenty of brilliant books to keep you entertained.
The challenge is aimed at primary school-aged children and it’s run by The Reading Agency. The challenge launched in Scottish libraries on Saturday 24 June and will launch in English and Welsh libraries on Saturday 8 July.
This year The Reading Agency has partnered the Youth Sport Trust for ‘Ready, Set, Read’. This is a sports and games-themed challenge that aims to keep minds and bodies active over the summer holidays.
You can sign up for the free Summer Reading Challenge by visiting your local library. (Top tip – check out the Library Zone at summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/library-zone to nd your local one.)
Staff or volunteers at the library will give you a special collector folder. Then you set a reading goal and borrow books of your choice to read during the summer, collecting stickers and rewards as you go. Some libraries will also be holding themed activities that you can get involved in.
Your goal can be to read as many books as you like and you can choose whatever ones interest you. That means fact, ction, poetry, graphic novels and joke books are all included. Even ebooks and audiobooks count!
Read your chosen books wherever or whenever you like. As you work through the challenge, you’ll help the ctional superstar team (and their marvellous mascots) weave their way through a summer obstacle course. Once you meet your reading goal and complete the challenge you’ll receive a certi cate or a medal.
If your library isn’t running the challenge, you can also take part online. Ask your parents or carers to sign up for free at summerreadingchallenge.org.uk

Here are some photos of children at Parkhead Salvation Army. They received Sunday school prizes, presented by Major Morag Sabiston, who also led the Sunday morning meeting (service). After this, there was lunch at the Salvation Army hall and a fun- lled afternoon at Messy Church. Messy Church was led by Major Fiona Partland with some help from Parkhead’s young people’s leaders. What a great day!
This colouring really made the Kids Alive! team smile. It’s from Eva, age 10, and she completed it for Mental Health Awareness Week. Look at all the awesome colours – it really has the wow factor!
