verybody loves a good story but have you ever thought about writing your own fun adventure, serious drama or hilarious comedy? Using your imagination to create crazy characters and exciting storylines can be an awesome experience. Not only that, creative expression is really good for your well-being! National Writing Day on Wednesday (24 June) is the perfect opportunity to try your hand at some kind of creative writing. There are loads of ideas and creative resources to download on the National Writing Day website, (nationalwritingday.org) as well as videos with tips from poets and authors to watch. So pick up a pen on National Writing Day and have fun expressing yourself! You could write a fantasy or sci-fi story or compose a poem, song lyrics or rap. If you love theatre or movies try your hand at a play or film script. Diaries or autobiographies are really interesting, so why don’t you work on a written record of what you’ve been up to during lockdown? You could also write a TV documentary about recent world events. If you love drawing, create a cartoon and write some text to go with your pictures – use the Bible cartoon or Patch’s Pals in Kids Alive! for inspiration.

There’s a pen hidden on every page of this week’s comic. See if you can find them all!
Way back when, in a time before emails, text messages and video calls, I wrote letters to friends who lived far away. As a child I attended a residential music school for one week every summer. At the end of those weeks I swapped addresses with kids I’d made friends with. More than 35 years later one of those pen pals is one of my best buddies. We wouldn’t be friends if neither of us had picked up pens and written to each other. There are so many things I’d have missed out on if nobody had written them: books, films, music, plays… Most importantly, I might never have become a friend of Jesus had no one written down the things he did and said. Whether it’s a story, a song or a letter, try writing something this week – if you don’t, someone might miss out on something very special.

ome people are good at making things – building, sewing, cooking. I’m not, because as soon as I start something I want it to be finished, so I hurry too much and usually make a mess. When King Solomon built a beautiful temple for God he spent a lot of time getting it just right. He made sure he used the best wood, stones, furnishings and gold. Altogether, the Temple took seven years to build! Solomon gave exact instructions for how God’s house should look: it had to be this long, that wide and that high; the carvings had to have this pattern; there had to be so many lamp stands on the left and so many on the right.
by Leanne Ruthven
Thousands of people helped build the Temple. Everyone wanted to do the best possible job because they believed it would be where God lived, and they wanted to thank him for all he had done for them. After the work was finished, they all had a party – which lasted 14 days! Solomon believed it was important to do the very best for God, which is why he worked so hard to get the Temple (God’s house) just right. Today, we’re taught that God is with each of us wherever we are and whatever we are doing – not just at The Salvation Army or in church. Whether we are good at making things or not, God is with us helping us to do our best for him, just as King Solomon did.

Solomon Check out your bible – 1 KINGS 5–8
God Moves In King Solomon built a temple for the God of Israel. The temple must look exactly like this. I’ll pay the workers well.
Building went on for years … and years…
Yes, your majesty!
Those curtains are the wrong colour. Take Them back and get the right ones.
Why does it have to be so big? Because it’s for God.
…And years … until finally it was finished. Whew!
The king brought the ark of God into the temple.
Phew!
Then a cloud filled the whole Place, so even the priests couldn’t get in.
Solomon dedicated the temple. Welcome to your house, OH God. Look after your people!
Then… HOORAH!

Selected verses from
Psalm 20 The Bible book of Psalms is a collection of songs that help us to tell God how we’re feeling – whether we’re happy, excited, worried or sad. There are psalms praising and thanking God, asking for his help and reminding us that, no matter what, we can always trust him. So however you’re feeling, dig in! There’s sure to be a psalm that’s just right for you.
When we choose to become friends with Jesus, we’re making the decision to trust him and all the wonderful promises that he’s made to love, protect and help us. We can be confident that God will always listen to our prayers and have our best interests at heart. This can give us the courage to face any challenges that may come our way.
I pray that the Lord will listen when you are in trouble, and that the God of Jacob will keep you safe. May the Lord send help from his Temple and come to your rescue from Mount Zion. May he remember your gifts and be pleased with what you bring. May God do what you want most and let all go well for you. Then you will win victories, and we will celebrate, while raising our banners in the name of our God. May the Lord answer all of your prayers! Some people trust the power of chariots or horses, but we trust you, Lord God. Others will stumble and fall, but we will be strong and stand firm. Contemporary English Version
Dear God,
Thank you for answering our prayers. Help me to trust you more and more each day.
Amen.

2 What To Do
Ask a grown-up to turn on the oven and set it to 200ºC (gas mark 7).
2
Sieve the flour into the mixing bowl. Add the salt and baking powder, and mix them together.
3
Ask a grown-up to help you cut the butte into cubes. Add the butter to the rest of the mixture and use your fingers to rub it all together until the mixture looks like fine crumbs.
4 5
Add the caster sugar.

9
Ask a grown-up to warm the milk in the microwave (around 30 seconds on full power should be long enough).
6
Ask a grown-up to place the baking tray into the oven to get it warm.
7
Make a well in the middle of your mixture, add the warm milk and use a metal knife to stir it in quickly.
8
Spread some flour on to your work surface and tip out the dough. Sprinkle a little more flour on top of the dough.
9
Pat the dough flat with your hands and fold over two to three times until the dough looks smoother, then roll it out till it’s around 4cm deep.
10
Use the pastry cutter to cut out your scones and repeat until you’ve used up your dough. Carefully place your scones on the hot baking tray.
11
Beat your egg, brush it over the tops of your scones and bake them in the oven for around 10 minutes.

Learning through fun at home

Lots of you will be off school at the moment as most of them are shut or taking just a few year groups as lockdown is slowly lifted. While you’re stuck at home you might be struggling to keep entertained. So we thought you might appreciate some ideas to keep you busy during this challenging time. They’re all easy to do at home and link in with the subjects you might have been learning in school.
What’s your favourite book? Hopefully you’ve read so many that it’s hard to choose! Books aren’t just fun to read, they’re incredibly powerful and can help us to learn about people who have lived lives that are different to our own. That could be because they’re of a different generation to us, because they lived in a different country or they have a different skin colour to us. Instead of re-reading one of your favourite books this week, ask your parents or guardians to sit down with you to look online for books about or featuring different races, cultures or religions to your own. If you’re not sure where to start looking, ask them to talk to other parents or guardians, search on social media for suggestions or if they can afford to, check out a book subscription service, such as littleboxofbooks.co.uk.

Do you have any favourite Bible stories? Have you ever thought about acting them out using puppets? It’s a great way to think about what people would have said and how they would have reacted. To help you think about what life was like for people living in Bible times, here are some templates for you to colour, cut out and use. These templates are the characters from The Good Samaritan (you can read this story in Luke 10:25–37). You could even use them as a way to tell Bible stories to your friends who don’t know much about Christianity.
Check out next week’s KA! World for more ideas to keep on learning!

Campbeltown’s Cool Creations In May, Campbeltown Salvation Army should have been celebrating its 121st anniversary. Because members of the church were unable to have the family meal that was planned, it was decided that someone should visit all the homes of the adults and children who attend Campbeltown Salvation Army and deliver them some home-baked cakes. Margaret, the children’s worker at Campbeltown, also encouraged the children to colour in the International Nurses Day Colouring that was featured in the 9 May issue of Kids Alive! Here are two of the awesome colourings that Margaret collected from Courtney and Gabrielle.
