FLY WITH ME colouring
Fly With Me is a kite-flying festival to remember the issues people are facing in Afghanistan since the Taliban took control again. It’s being held today (20 August) and celebrates the ancient Afghan craft of kite flying. Find out more at goodchance.org.uk/flywithme – there are also instructions to make your own kite. If you can’t make it to the festival, think about Afghanistan while you add a splash of colour to this Fly With Me Colouring. Email your colourings to: kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk – make sure you write ‘Fly With Me Colouring’ in the subject box and give us your full name, age and address. Alternatively you can post your colourings to: Your Space, Kids Alive! 101 Newington Causeway, London SE1 6BN. One last reminder, if you’re sending by post remember to fill in your details below so we know who you are. We send a gift to everyone whose colouring we publish, so don’t miss out!

Living a healthy and an active lifestyle and caring for your physical, mental and spiritual well-being. The Joy of Journaling
Is your head full of questions, ideas, stories or concerns? So much so that maybe you don’t know what to do with them all. Sometimes it can be difficult to put our feelings and thoughts into words, especially when we feel angry, sad or anxious.
Writing a diary is a great way to express everything that’s on your mind. Anne Frank used her diary to talk to her imaginary friend, Kitty, when she was trapped in the annex of the building where her father worked in Amsterdam. This helped her channel her thoughts and be creative. And thanks to her writing, we know so much about what that time in history was like for children like Anne.
Nowadays lots of people do something called journaling. This is like writing a diary, but it’s a little less structured. You don’t have to ‘journal’ every day and you can draw images, patterns or squiggles or write lists, poems or songs. Anything you like.
Thoughts and Feelings
Journals aren’t just fun, they’re also really good for mental health too. They can help you manage anxiety, reduce stress and cope with difficult feelings. They’re a safe space to share your thoughts and feelings.
Get Started
The best thing about writing a diary or journaling is that you don’t need much to get started. Just a notebook or sketchbook and some pens or pencils are enough. You can also use paint or stickers, or glue in photos of things that remind you of good times.
There are also special journaling books you can buy too, but you don’t need one.
A blank page can be a little intimidating if you’re not sure what you want to write. However, remember that a journal isn’t ‘work’, it’s just for fun. There’s no pressure to write in it every day or for it to have perfect grammar. You can write or draw as much or as little as you want. It can be whatever you want it to be.
If you’re struggling to start your journal here are some prompts that might get your creative juices flowing…
Write an ‘All About Me’ section. This can include things such as your name, age, where you live or who’s in your family.
Make a top five list. This could be your five favourite foods, books, songs or jokes. Or list the best things about you.
Draw a picture of your favourite holiday.
Write a letter to your best friend. Design an invention.
Write about what you’ve done that day.
Create colourful doodles out of different shapes. Draw a bookshelf with blank books on it. Write in the names of the books you’ve read as you finish them.
Write a review of your favourite book or draw your favourite character. Write down the things that you want to pray to God about.
Go on a nature walk and record the things you see. Use words, drawings, photos or paintings.
Write down three things you’re grateful for that day.
Colour in the Fly With Me Colouring on page 11 and stick it into your journal. List what you’re excited about happening during the rest of 2022. Write down the things you’re worried about and how they make you feel.
Go Digital
You can also journal using a camera, video recorder or smartphone. Rather than writing or drawing your thoughts, you could take photos to stick in a book or video record how you feel and edit your clips together on a computer.

Young people at Belfast North Salvation Army had a fabulous time celebrating their annual prizegiving. They had a special guest to give out the prizes – Bruno from Disney film Encanto! After the prizegiving the kids enjoyed fun in the nearby playpark to finish off a wonderful day.
