FROM THE C.O’S DESK Christmas is just around the corner. How did that happen? I don’t know whether you feel the same but this year seems to have flown by. I wonder if you have achieved all that you wanted to this year? Have your dreams for the year come to fruition, or do you still have to work on them? Have your prayers been answered this year or do you have to persevere in prayer too? There is real evidence that God has been moving in Woking Corps this year. We have seen people going deeper in Scripture, the number of people attending the prayer meeting has increased, new people are coming to Sunday worship, new families are attending Messy Church and Teddy Toddlers, the Hearts and Craft group is overflowing, we are seeing deepened relationships with those attending the core groups, we have people applying to become Salvation Army officers, we are seeing new children coming to All Stars and Little Stars and very soon we are going to be enrolling some of them as Junior Soldiers (the first in 8 years!). God is good. But at the same time, we have had a tough year. I believe we are under spiritual attack. The devil is seeing something he doesn’t like and is doing his best to stop us in our tracks, whichever way he can. We must stand firm and remember that although we are in a battle, God already has the victory and we need to keep him close to stand our ground. As we reflect on the year, there have been joys and

N o v e mb e r / D e c e mb e r

sorrows, highs and lows for each one of us personally and collectively as a church. But this Christmas we can once again be reassured that there is a Wonderful Counsellor, a Mighty God, a Prince of Peace, an

Everlasting Father who loves us so deeply and wants his children to be filled with love, joy, peace and hope. Debbie Pearson Lieutenant

Gift Service For the past few years we have held a Toy Service on the first Sunday in advent, to help with our Christmas parcels. This has been a great success and I’d like to thank you all for your generosity during that time. Over the past couple of years we have been blessed with donations of toys via The Peacocks collection point, Knaphill Methodist Church and from people turning up at the hall during the week donating to us. What we struggle to find are suitable gifts for men. So this year, on 8th December we will be holding a Gift service, but rather than toys we would like you to bring gifts that we can use for the many men that need our help at Christmas. Socks, gloves and hats are welcome but why not be creative - Let’s bless the men this Christmas!

New for 2013 ~ Christmas Eve service This year we’re going to try something new. The candlelight service that would normally take place on the last Sunday before Christmas, will now be at 11.30pm on Christmas Eve, running into Christmas Day. You are all invited to this informal and relaxed service, where warm drinks will be served, carols will be sung by candlelight, and Scripture will be shared. Bring your family and friends to see in Christmas Day together.

A snake went to the optician to get new glasses and was told to return in two weeks for a check up. When he returned he was very depressed and was asked if there was a problem with the glasses. “No they’re fine,” he replied, “but I have discovered that for the last two years I have been married to a hose pipe.” After a Bible Study on Love, eight ladies decided to text “I love you” to their husbands. These are their replies. 1. Who is this? 2. Are you ill? 3. I love you too 4. Have you bumped the car again? 5. What have you done now? 6. How much do you need? 7. You promised not to drink during the day 8. You’ve invited your mother to stay again haven’t you? Some genuine science quotes from children:H20 is hot water and co2 is cold water. Blood flows down one leg and up the other Rhubarb is a kind of celery gone bloodshot Vacuum is a large empty space where the Pope lives Dew is formed on leaves when the sun shines down on them and makes them perspire. An old lady was stopped by the police for driving so slowly on the highway (22mph). It was explained to her that driving too slowly was as dangerous as driving too fast. She protested that she was doing exactly as the notice said – 22 mph. The officer explained that 22 was the route number and asked if her stunned looking passengers were all right. “O they’ll be ok in a minute officer. I just got off route 142” Keep smiling,

Design for life WOW what a weekend. I had mixed emotions about this weekend but I put my trust in the Lord and I am so glad that I did! It was so fab to know that many people at the corps were praying for Margaret and me. When we arrived at the training college in London it felt so peaceful as we were walking through the grounds to our rooms! As everyone was arriving we all were going to the hub (big lounge) to meet and greet everyone. This was followed soon by supper. In the evening we had a time of worship and getting to know the people in our small group. The small groups were done according to age groups and everyone was an individual. We spent some time talking about why we had come on this weekend. We then went back to the meeting room for some more worship time. Alan Norton told us the message that God uses crooked sticks to draw straight lines!!! After the session it was time for hot chocolate, more chatting and sleep!!! Saturday morning started with everyone talking about the sleep or lack of. After a good hearty breakfast it was time for more worship and teaching. After coffee we broke into our groups and we had to think

about where we have been in our lives and we had to map it down. We had to report back to the group. It was lovely to know how different people have come in their lives and get to know people a little better. In the afternoon we looked at our spiritual gifts. These are gifts that God has given us to make up the church. Before we came on the weekend we had to fill these in. As a group we all went round each individual to discuss what everyone’s spiritual gift was. During the afternoon we had some free time‌some people went for a walk while others went to bed for a while. In the evening we had some more worship and a time for prayer and reflection. It was an individual thing and it was lovely to spend some time in this way. Sunday morning was a time spent looking at what God wants us to do with our lives. During our teaching we were given an image of a door which is locked and how will we open that door. We then had to individually draw where we were in our lives and what God is telling us what he wants for our future. We then had to present this to our group. After we had done this we had one to ones with our group leader. After lunch (a roast dinner) we met once again for a time of

N o v e mb e r / D e c e mb e r

reflection and celebration. I really enjoyed this weekend and it was certainly an adventure. It was a very emotional weekend but it was lovely to be in God’s presence. God had been telling me to go on this weekend for a long time and I am so glad that I was given the opportunity. It was such a good feeling to know that there are many

Page 7

people who are waiting to get into the same boat. Maybe God is challenging you too to go on this weekend? Maybe God has a plan that he wants to confirm to you? Why not take the plunge and say yes! I did and I will never look back!! God Bless Claire Brooks

Songs of Praise In November our Songs of Praise meeting will be led by Major Fred Thompson, with the theme 'Scones of Praise'. Fred comes to us with a wealth of experience, and we are looking forward to a fun evening of praise together. This will be the last regular Songs of Praise that we host at Woking Corps. At the Corps Council in October, it was felt that Songs of Praise had run its course, and that the time is right to do something different. So…

Let’s Get Together! It also became apparent at the Corps Council, through a number of discussions, that as a Corps we would like to spend more time together in an informal setting. Although we see each other most weeks, we don't have much time to really get to know each other or get past the surface of “hello, how are you?”, “fine”. So next year we will be arranging 5 social events that you, your family, your friends are invited to. The idea is that a different person will host each one and it is up to them to choose what we do. You may like to open up your home and invite everyone round for tea and cake, you might want to organise a trip to the cinema, you might want to arrange a curry night at the hall. The choice is yours. Hopefully throughout the year there will be something for everyone - more details to follow in the next edition of Tidings.

Interview with Rita Frankham .. We are very pleased that you have come to join us regularly on Sunday mornings perhaps you will tell us a few details about yourself for those who do not know much about you. When did you first come to the Salvation Army in Woking?. I first came about sixty years ago with my mother, we were living then in Courtenay Road in Woking.. Did you ever worship in our Walton Road hall? Yes I did but before that I remember going to the hall in Church Street with my mum. My son was dedicated there by Brigadier Ford and my mother was enrolled by Major Rosemary Shepherd. I used to go to the Home League Auxiliary group and took part in the singers and mandolin group. What made you decide to join us after many years and call the Salvation Army your church? I enjoy the fellowship, the friendly atmosphere, the music, the fun but most of all the good

Bible teaching to be found at the corps which has given me a feeling of a change of direction in my life. Who would you say has influenced you most in your life? Mr. F.W. Gibson Lee who was Sunday school Superintendent at Courtenay Rd. Free church for many years, a Godly man who I will never forget. What books have you found to be the most helpful in your spiritual life? The Psalms and the book of Proverbs and many other books such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer ......The cost of discipleship.

November/December

In a mother’s womb were two babies. Twin 1. “Do you believe in life after delivery?” Twin 2. “Why, of course, there has to be something after delivery. Maybe we are here to prepare ourselves for what we will be later.” Twin 1. “Nonsense, there is no life after delivery, what would that life be?” Twin 2. “I don’t know but there will be more light than here and maybe we will walk with our legs and eat with our mouths.” Twin1. “Ridiculous. The umbilical cord supplies nutrition. Life after delivery is to be excluded. The umbilical cord is too short” Twin 2. “I think there is something and it’s different than here.” Twin 1. “No one has ever come back from there. Delivery is the end of life, and in the after-delivery it is nothing but darkness and anxiety and it takes us nowhere” Twin 2. “Well I’m not so sure but certainly we will see mother and she will take care of us” Twin 1. “Mother? You believe in mother? Where is she now? Twin 2. “She is all around us. It is in her that we live and move and have our being. Without her there would not be this world.” Twin 1. “I don’t see her, so it’s only logical that she doesn’t exist.” Twin2. “Sometimes, when you’re in silence you can hear her and perceive her and feel her love. I believe there is a reality after delivery and we are here to prepare ourselves for that reality……..”

Welcome to Joan Clark We are pleased to have Joan as part of our corps family. We asked her to tell us a few details about her life and this is what she told us. My family moved to Devizes when I was very young , a young Lieutenant from the local corps soon visited us and invited us to worship at the corps. My mother was rather reluctant because she had three young children but was assured that we would all be very welcome. In due time my dad joined the band and we all became involved in corps activities. Eventually I married Fred who had grown up in the small

corps. Through the years we moved to Gloucester , Bristol, Taunton and then back to Bristol where we retired. We then moved to Worthing where we spent the last years of Fred's life. I stayed there for twenty three years before my move to Woking. I would like to say thank you for making me so welcome. It is good to be near Ken and Wendy and the rest of the family, long may it be so. It was all due to a young Lieutenant who took the trouble to invite my family to the Salvation Army in Devizes, I can't even remember his name!! .

Community Services Managers update It’s been my privilege over the last few weeks to go into some of the local schools to see their harvest assembly and collect the donations. This year we have received donations from 7 schools and 1 church. The schools are St Andrews, Greenfields, Beaufort, Sythwood, Barnsbury, Lightwater Village, Hammond School and All Saints Church Lightwater. I have been so overwhelmed at the generosity shown to us and the huge amount of tins etc that have been given. My car seems like a Tardis at times, but at one schools I did have to do two runs. My thanks go to Will, Stuart, Ken and Roger who have done most of the moving, sorting and storing it all in readiness for Christmas. The Christmas Fair plans are well underway and I’m sure we will be asking you to help sometime soon, but especially to come and spend your money. It is on the 23rd November from 10am – 1pm. The Big parcel wrap is on 12th December from 9.30am – 2pm, such a busy day but so rewarding, names are already coming in and I’m sure we are going to be even more in demand than we have been.

We are making a very big effort to meet each morning to pray at the hall, although the building is busy from 8.30 each morning it is very tricky to round up those in the building who would like to do this and so on a Monday it will be at 9.40am in the main hall and then Tuesday to Friday at 9.50 in the office, this is for anyone who would like to join us. By making it at a set time and place hopefully it will soon be part of the daily schedule and a vital part of the daily life of those using the building. Over the next few months we will be stretched to our limits with the business that Christmas brings, the devil will do all in his power to tire us, divide us and sap the enjoyment of the season out of us IF we let him. Let’s do what we do best, love, cherish and care for each other by being encouraging and motivating. By doing this we will have the strength to celebrate and share with each other and the community around us and the places that we spend the most time, the amazing and wonderful God given gift of Jesus. RECIPE Caramelised Apple Cake With Streusel topping Ingredients for Cake 100g butter, plus 1 tbsp (works just as well with cooking margarine) 175 g light brown muscavado sugar, plus 1 tbsp 2 dessert apples (cut into 1 ½ cm pieces) 2 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla essence 200g plain flour 1 tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. ground cinnamon 100 ml milk

Streusel Topping 25g flour 85g Demerara sugar, plus 1 tbsp ½ tsp ground cinnamon 50g cold butter 3 tbsp chopped hazelnuts

Method Heat 1 tbsp butter and 1 tbsp sugar in a large frying pan over medium heat until the sugar starts to melt. Add apples, then cook for about 5 mins, until nicely browned and the sauce is a rich caramel. Leave to cool. While the apples cool, make the topping. Using the tips of your fingers, rub together flour, 85g sugar, cinnamon and cold butter until the mixture is crumbly. Stir in 2 tbsp. of hazelnuts. Set aside. To make the cake, place the remaining butter and sugar in a bowl or food mixer and beat until light and creamy. Add the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract. Add the flour, baking powder, cinnamon and milk in two goes, alternating between dry and wet ingredients. When the mixture is well combined, stir through the cooled apple mixture. Spoon in the cake mixture into tin, smooth over the top with a spoon, then sprinkle over the streusel topping. Scatter with the remaining 1 tbsp demerara sugar and hazelnuts. Cook in the oven for 50 mins-1 hr. or until a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 mins, then turn out onto a baking rack, remove paper and cool. What The Bible Says There is an opinion that everyone is a child of God, it is necessary to understand what is meant by this. The Scriptures will provide illumination.

lieved in his name, he gave the right to become children of God – 13. children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

Malachi 2:10 Asks "have we not all one Father? has not God created us? This looks pretty good, a father implies children and we must be the children of God. Wrong! Malachi was talking to Israelite, not gentiles.

Jn 14:21 (KJV) He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

There are many passages in the OT of this nature, however the NT clearly resolves the problem. Eph 4:6 (NIV) one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. Here we have a clear reference, again, this is of limited value, because God is a Spirit (Jn. 4;24) and we must worship Him in spirit and in truth. God is our Creator and our Father, but there are conditions which must be met, if we are to show that we recognise Him as our Father. Jn 1:12-13 (NIV) Yet to all who received him, to those who be-

1 Jn 5:1-5 (NIV) Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. Finally; I must ask if I truly believe God is my Father, or am I simply fooling myself? Eric Horder

Window on My World What do you do in Woking Corps? As well as playing cornet in the band I am also Corps Treasurer. This means I have responsibility for the financial side of the Corps ensuring we have enough money to run the various corps programmes as well as ensuring we don’t spend money we haven’t got! Where do you live? I live in Woking, not far from the station, with my wife Jane and my son Josh. My daughter, Rebecca, has recently started a university course in Southampton. Where do you work and what is your job? I work for an international firm of accountants where I specialise in working with charities. In this role I have a unique opportunity to work alongside the senior teams of some of the UK’s largest and well known charities. The role provides tremendous variety and the opportunity to meet many different people. I am currently based in Gatwick but as most of my time is spent with clients I am only there a couple of days each week. The rest of the time I am travelling around, mostly in London.

What do you do when you are not at work? I have quite a demanding job and tend to work quite long hours and so there seems to be limited time for other interests. Until recently time outside of work revolved around the children but as they become more independent there is a bit more time to do things that interest me – reading, cooking – and more recently – exercise (my family kindly bought me a treadmill for my last birthday!) What challenges you? I have always found it a challenge managing my time and in particular distinguishing between what is urgent and what is important. Inevitably my time is drawn to what is most pressing...often at the expense of what is really important. I use a book of daily bible reading notes to guide my daily devotions and this past week included the story of Mary and Martha (Luke 10:38-42). I often find myself bustling about my business like Martha, rather than sitting at Jesus’ feet and listening to Him, like Mary. Continued on page 20

Page 20

Continued from page 19 What books would you recommend? I recently attended an event called the Global Leadership Summit with Debbie and Will, which was run by the Willow Creek Association. One of the key speakers was Bill Hybels, the pastor of Willow Creek Community Church. One of the most helpful books I have read is one of his, “Too Busy Not to Pray” – perhaps not surprising given the ongoing challenge I outlined above! I found “Purpose Driven Church” by Rick Warren particularly inspiring and I find the books written by Rob Parsons very readable and in a style that works for me (short chapters!)

What is your greatest hope? My hope is that I will be alert to God’s leading and willing to play my part in his plan – I strongly believe that ...”Just where he needs me, my Lord has placed me, Just where he needs me there would I be!” (Salvation Army Song Book No 706) What do you still need to learn? I think there is lots I still need to learn – patience would be one thing, how to relax would be something else - but still having something to learn is what makes life enjoyable – which is just as well because as I get older I realise there is ever more I don’t know and need to learn. Andy Stickland

Gardening Tips Plant up baskets and tubs with pansies, violas and polyanthus with evergreens such as ivy and spring flowering bulbs. Lift tender plants such as dahlias and cannas when temperature drops sharply. Rake up leaves from lawns and raise the cutter of the lawn mower. Cut the lawn when required except when wet or frost is about. Lightly prune tall shrubs to stop wind damage. Apply grease bands around the trunks of hard fruit to stop the winter moth from climbing.

The teaching of the Scriptures helps us one and all, Makes it easer to understand the Holy Spirit call. Jesus Saviour of the world taught love for all mankind. William Booth with flag unfurled had The Salvation Army on his mind. Worship hours have given us what gospel Luke did learn. Understanding what Jesus taught can bear best concern. Harvest time has reached us, thanksgiving for so much treasure. Giving tins for others to share, gives us all so much pleasure. Sending with each parcel our faith in God’s tender care. Praying along this journey, for God’s love to be known everywhere. Margi
