Zacchaeus the Tree-Climber

Hi kids! Imagine that a movie premiere is happening in the town where you live. Your favourite actor is starring in the movie and will be coming for the premiere. This is your chance to meet them in person! How excited would you be? Would you line up outside the theatre, hoping to get a selfie with them? That’s how Zacchaeus felt when Jesus came to his hometown, Jericho. He had heard amazing things about Jesus and couldn’t wait to meet Him. Now, Zacchaeus wasn’t exactly a “good” guy. In fact, he was known for being a cheater. Yet, Jesus chose to go to his house, even though there were tons of other people who wanted to meet Him. How do you think that made Zacchaeus feel? How would you feel if you were Zacchaeus?

esus came to a town called Jericho. Zacchaeus, a man who lived there, wanted to see Jesus. But he was short. He could not see Jesus because of the crowd. He asked taller people to move over, but they ignored him. Nobody would help him because Zacchaeus had cheated them all out of a lot of money. So Zacchaeus climbed a tree and waited. Jesus stopped under the tree and said, “Zacchaeus, come down. I must stay at your house today.” The people were shocked. They said, “Can you believe Jesus is having dinner with him?” Zacchaeus climbed down the tree. He wanted to do what was right. He told Jesus he would give half of everything he had to the poor. He promised to give back four times anything he had stolen. Jesus said to Zacchaeus, “Today salvation has come to your house.”

The world’s oldest trees live in California. Some of the state’s bristlecone pines and giant sequoias are estimated to be 4,000 to 5,000 years old. A tree can absorb as much as 22 kilograms of carbon dioxide each year. Palm Sunday—the Sunday before Easter—is so called because people took branches from palm trees and used them to greet Jesus Christ in Jerusalem.

Hi kids!

I was taking the subway recently and I saw a mom in trouble. She was struggling to carry a baby stroller down a flight of stairs. I wanted to help, so I offered to carry it with her. The mom was grateful for the assistance. We see people who need help all the time. But sometimes, it’s easy to pass them by. Jesus found Himself in a similar situation. While walking one timaeus day, He met a blind man named Bar people er who wanted Jesus to heal him. Hi kids! In this issue of Just for Kids, you’ll read a story Jesus told about a son who made a lot of mistakes. He treated his family badly. He thought his father could never forgive him for what he had done. Maybe you’ve never run away from home and spent all your dad’s money, like the son in the story. But we all make mistakes. Everyone needs to be forgiven. Still, it can be hard to forgive others sometimes. When the son returned to his family, his brother didn’t want to forgive him. The brother didn’t want to join the party celebrating the son’s return. He was still angry. His example shows us that when you don’t forgive others, you miss out.

o show His disciples what God is like, Jesus told a story about a man who had two sons. The younger son asked his father for money. Then he left home so he could live a wild life. But he soon ran out of money. The only job he could find was feeding pigs. The son was so hungry that he wanted to eat the pigs’ food.

He decided to go home and ask his father to take him back as a hired servant. I don’t deserve to be his son anymore, he thought.

While the son was still a long way down the road, his father saw him. His father ran to him and hugged him. He

gave a party to celebrate the son’s return. His older brother was mad and said to their father, “I’ve always obeyed you, but you’ve never given a party for me.” But the father said, “My son, everything I have is yours. But we have to celebrate. We thought your brother was lost, but now we’ve found him again.”

God has a better way. When someone hurts you, instead of trying to get back at them, do the opposite! Choose to heal instead of hurt, to forgive instead of getting even. The next time you find yourself feeling angry when someone hurts you, ask God to help you take the first step to forgive. Adapted from Orange 252 God Times, March 2020, week three.

Being a Christian is like that. We know that God loved the world so much, He sent His Son, Jesus, to die on our behalf. Because of Jesus, all of our sins have been forgiven. Because of Jesus, we can have a relationship with God. That is great news—news that needs to be shared! How can you share the good news about Jesus this week?

Hi kids!

Fishermen Follow Jesus

P

Luke 5:1-11

eter and Andrew were fishermen. Fishing was how they earned money.

One day Jesus came to the Sea of Galilee where they were fishing and mending their nets. Many people wanted to hear Jesus teach. The people kept crowding around Him, trying to get closer. Jesus got into Peter’s boat which was at the water’s edge. Then Jesus sat down and taught all the people who were crowded on the beach. When Jesus finished talking, Jesus told Peter to take the boat out into deeper water. Then Jesus told Peter to let down his nets to catch some fish. When Peter and Andrew let down the nets, they caught so many fish that the nets began to break! Peter and Andrew called to their partners in another boat to come and help them. There were so many fish that when they pulled the nets with the fish into the boats, the boats began to sink. Quickly,

the men rowed to shore. Jesus said: “From now on you will catch people.” Jesus meant Peter and Andrew would tell lots of people the good news about Jesus. Peter and Andrew and their partners pulled their boats up on the beach, left everything and followed Jesus.
