TRAINING PRINCIPAL'S REPORT Some of us have been to many Commissioning weekends. They come and go with annual regularity and we take them for granted. However the last national Commissioning of Cadets in Australia was held in the 1930s, a very different time and context for The Salvation Army than what we find ourselves in today. The Messengers of the Gospel cadets are part of a historic occasion as the first contemporary session to be commissioned this way and they stand as the vanguard of a new national territory that we see emerging before us. Messengers, you timed it well. Do us proud as you lead the mission and ministry of The Salvation Army into new territory.

their skills to new mission fields. I also want to pay tribute to the academic and support staff of both Booth College (Sydney) and Catherine Booth College (Melbourne) for the input they commit to the training of cadets. The National School for Officer Training and our National College as a whole, are undergoing major transition. It is our commitment and desire to become the very best avenues of education and training that we can for the new Australia Territory. The coming 12 months will see the last cadets trained in a residential capacity in Sydney as we transition to having our main residential and administrative base in Melbourne. But equally we are looking to design and implement multiple modes of training for officership that will see more cadets dispersed around our nation applying what they learn from week-to-week in local avenues of mission and ministry. There are exciting possibilities ahead of us.

It is unusual to commission a session of cadets that entered into separate Schools for Officer Training, completed their second year of training through two separate campuses that had merged into one national school, and now share a commissioning after very different formation journeys. Those from the Australia Eastern and Southern Territories have not allowed the transitions and changes to distract them from their training and have applied themselves to every opportunity afforded them.

Very early in Jesus’ earthly ministry he read publicly from the prophet Isaiah. In those words he announced the mission he was called to, and outlined what the gospel was all about. Messengers of the Gospel take Jesus words with you as your own commission today:

Messengers you have committed yourself to being learners and that process is only just beginning. Any person entering officership today needs to understand the rapid pace of change and the need to continue to educate, inform and challenge themselves. Don’t stop now. You have all come so far and your capacity has been stretched in so many directions. But God is not finished with you yet. There is a Gospel message to share and we are relying on you to be the very best messengers of the Gospel you can be. May good news abound and the Kingdom of God flourish in our midst because of your commitment to mission and ministry.

“The Spirit of the Lord is on you, because he has anointed you to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent you to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” (Luke 4:18-19 - adapted) That is a gospel worth sharing!

I want to acknowledge the staff of the National School for Officer Training and the excellent work they do in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. Several of our team are leaving us and we especially acknowledge Captains Laithe and Kaelene Greenaway, Lieutenant Jisook Wunderlich, Lieutenant Nicola Poore (part-time) and Lieutenant Sean Li (part-time) as they turn

THREE STEPS IN THE COMMISSIONING OF SALVATION ARMY OFFICERS The Signing of the Covenant

All cadets sign a covenant recognising that the essential basis of Commissioning is that God calls and empowers them to be ministers of Christ. Therefore, the covenant is made between the individual and God: “Called by God to proclaim the Gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, as an officer of The Salvation Army, I bind myself to him in this solemn covenant.

The Commissioning and Ordination

Following the act of personal dedication, the cadets make an affirmation of faith. By signing their covenant and by their commissioning, they declare that they will be loyal to biblical truths and the principles and doctrines of The Salvation Army. Through this commissioning, the new officers dedicate themselves to the people of God called The Salvation Army. They affirm that they will, by example in life, word and selfless service, be true to their calling as a Salvation Army officer.

Appointing

The newly commissioned lieutenants are charged with the responsibility of showing the saving grace of God in the ministry of officer leadership within The Salvation Army. This is the outward sign of the inward call from God, and the appointing to be a servant of Christ for the sake of all people.

DECLARATION OF FAITH In the name of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, and in the presence of the officers, soldiers and friends of The Salvation Army here assembled, we declare that:

1.

We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God, and that they only constitute the Divine rule of Christian faith and practice.

6.

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has by his suffering and death made an atonement for the whole world so that whosoever will may be saved.

2.

We believe that there is only one God, who is infinitely perfect, the Creator, Preserver and Governor of all things, and who is the only proper object of religious worship.

7.

We believe that repentance towards God, faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and regeneration by the Holy Spirit are necessary to salvation.

3.

We believe that there are three persons in the Godhead — the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost — undivided in essence and co–equal in power and glory.

8.

We believe that we are justified by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and that he that believeth hath the witness in himself.

9.

We believe that continuance in a state of salvation depends upon continued obedient faith in Christ.

4.

5.

We believe that in the person of Jesus Christ the divine and human natures are united, so that he is truly and properly God and truly and properly man.

10. We believe that it is the privilege of all believers to be wholly sanctified, and that their whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We believe that our first parents were created in a state of innocency, but by their disobedience they lost their purity and happiness, and that in consequence of their fall all men have become sinners, totally depraved and as such are justly exposed to the wrath of God.

11. We believe in the immortality of the soul; in the resurrection of the body; in the general judgment at the end of the world; in the eternal happiness of the righteous; and in the endless punishment of the wicked.

The National Chief Secretary will say:

The National Chief Secretary will say:

Do you promise faithfully to maintain and proclaim these truths?

We do!

Do you promise by holy living, boundless charity and adherence to the principles and discipline of the Army to show yourselves at all times to be faithful officers of The Salvation Army?

The National Chief Secretary will say:

The cadets will reply:

The cadets will reply:

We do!

Do you regard it as your duty to bear this witness everywhere, to strive to lead all persons to their only Saviour, and for his sake to care for the poor, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, love the unlovable, and befriend those who have no friends?

The National Chief Secretary will say:

In the name of God I accept the declarations and promises you have made this day. We will now proceed to your commissioning and ordination.

The cadets will reply: We do!

SESSIONAL SONG Facing a Task Unfinished VERSE 1:

Facing a task unfinished That drives us to our knees A need that, undiminished Rebukes our slothful ease We, who rejoice to know Thee Renew before Thy throne The solemn pledge we owe Thee To go and make Thee known VERSE 2:

Where other lords beside Thee Hold their unhindered sway Where forces that defied Thee Defy Thee still today With none to heed their crying For life, and love, and light Unnumbered souls are dying And pass into the night CHORUS:

We go to all the world With kingdom hope unfurled No other name has power to save But Jesus Christ The Lord VERSE 3:

We bear the torch that flaming Fell from the hands of those Who gave their lives proclaiming That Jesus died and rose Ours is the same commission The same glad message ours Fired by the same ambition To Thee we yield our power VERSE 4:

O Father who sustained them O Spirit who inspired Saviour, whose love constrained them To toil with zeal untired From cowardice defend us From lethargy awake! Forth on Thine errands send us To labour for Thy sake
